You Are My Omega - Chapter 71
Lin Xinyi was her fiancée, her Omega, so Xu Shijiu believed she could do anything to Lin Xinyi, and Lin Xinyi would accept it all. That was Xu Shijiu’s original belief.
What shattered that belief was Lin Xinyi’s uncontrollable fear of her.
It was like a bucket of cold water pouring over her, extinguishing the fire in Xu Shijiu’s heart. All that was left were the burned-out remains of firewood, and a few stubborn sparks that refused to die, unwilling to surrender.
Then yesterday, a message from the Omega who had once been her childhood friend completely put out the last of those sparks. In truth, they should have gone out long ago. Whatever had existed between her and Lin Xinyi could never return.
Lin Xinyi’s fear of her had become something that could never be erased. And the cause of it all was Xu Shijiu’s own impulsiveness and irrational behavior. Or perhaps, from the very beginning, she and Lin Xinyi were never right for each other.
Maybe they were destined to separate and Xu Shijiu was meant to be alone.
Lin Xinyi left, taken away by Xu Manyue. This time, Xu Shijiu didn’t even turn on the surveillance cameras. She wasn’t home at all. Instead, she drowned herself in work at the company, trying to numb her feelings.
It wasn’t until Xu Manyue came to the office late at night to find her that Xu Shijiu finally stopped working and quietly followed her sister home. Neither of them mentioned Lin Xinyi. No one in the Xu family brought her up again.
“Since you’ve made your choice, Xiaojiu, then don’t regret it,” Xu Manyue said, giving her a warning. She was trying to provoke a reaction, hoping Xu Shijiu might change her mind. But it had no effect.
“I know,” Xu Shijiu replied calmly.
She had no regrets. The way she was now would only make Lin Xinyi afraid. There was no point in forcing things.
Three years passed quickly. Xu Shijiu had completely taken over Xu Entertainment. At just twenty-one years old, she had already led the company to new heights. Xu Manyue, now in her thirties, had suffered too many serious injuries and did not recover well. She was left with lasting health problems and could no longer handle stress, so she handed the company over to Xu Shijiu and stayed home to rest.
Xu Shijiu didn’t want to know anything about Lin Xinyi. At first, Xu Manyue would purposely bring up Lin Xinyi in front of her. Lin Xinyi had been taken back by the Lin family. After confirming her identity and biological connection, Xu Manyue handed her over.
That was all Xu Shijiu knew. Maybe because she never showed a reaction, Xu Manyue eventually gave up mentioning her.
One night, after finishing another long day at work, Xu Shijiu returned home. As expected, the lights were still on. When she walked in, she saw her sister chatting happily on the sofa with an Alpha named Ling Mian. They both looked relaxed and cheerful.
“Xiaojiu, you’re back!” Xu Manyue and Ling Mian looked at her at the same time. Ling Mian was already used to the way Xu Shijiu’s expression turned cold whenever she saw her, but she still smiled and said, “Welcome home.”
“Why are you at my house again?” Xu Shijiu asked with clear irritation. But because Ling Mian and her sister were close, she couldn’t stop her from coming. For the past month, Xu Shijiu often found Ling Mian in her home when she returned.
“I just came to chat with your sister, and also to get your family doctor to help with my injury,” Ling Mian replied pitifully. She covered the side of her face, which was still wrapped in a bandage. The wound didn’t really need it anymore, but the bruises still looked bad, so the bandage helped cover them.
Xu Shijiu rolled her eyes. “You’ve had that injury for nearly two weeks and you’re still coming here for treatment. Don’t tell me you can’t apply ointment yourself. And don’t the Lings have a private doctor? Your family is huge.”
Xu Shijiu had met Ling Mian again after Lin Xinyi left. The moment they saw each other, Xu Shijiu punched Ling Mian hard. If Xu Manyue hadn’t stopped her, she might have hit her a second time.
They say people become friends after a fight. Though it was completely one-sided in this case, it gave Ling Mian an excuse to come to the Xu home. At least Xu Shijiu didn’t throw her out again.
It was only after Xu Manyue’s repeated assurances and her own investigation that Xu Shijiu finally accepted that there had never been anything between Ling Mian and Lin Xinyi. Though her attitude softened a little, she was still far from friendly.
Ling Mian should consider herself lucky. Xu Shijiu hated lies more than anything. Her hatred toward Lin Xinyi’s deception allowed Ling Mian, who was an innocent bystander, to avoid harsher consequences.
In the past, Ling Mian didn’t dare come near the Xu family, didn’t dare approach Xu Shijiu. But now the old patriarch of the Ling family had passed away. The company had been divided among the family members, and the one who inherited the core business was their aunt, who had loved both Ling Mian and Xu Shijiu since they were young. Ling Mian no longer had to hold back her feelings and could finally do what she wanted.
“You must be exhausted from working so late,” Xu Manyue said gently as she stepped forward to help Xu Shijiu take off her suit jacket. The dark circles under Xu Shijiu’s eyes were clearly visible, even through makeup, and made her sister’s heart ache.
Xu Shijiu was no longer the timid and insecure girl she used to be. The scar on her forehead, once hidden by thick bangs, had faded after treatment. Now, with a bit of makeup, it was nearly invisible. Her hair was cut short and neat. Dressed in a fitted suit and shirt, she looked like a true professional.
If it weren’t for the old photos, Xu Manyue might have doubted whether the Xiaojiu from the past had ever existed.
“I’m doing well. How are you feeling, Sister?” Xu Shijiu asked, her concern sincere. Her sister should have been recovering in peace, but she had worked too hard and worried too much about Xu Shijiu. Because of that, she never had proper rest and was now left with lingering health problems. Every time Xu Shijiu saw her sister in pain, she wished she could go back in time and slap her younger self.
“I’m just sitting at home all day now. What could possibly happen to me?” Xu Manyue replied with a helpless smile. It used to be her working at the office, constantly worrying about the younger Xu Shijiu at home. Now, everything had completely reversed.
“You two sisters really have the kind of bond people dream of,” Ling Mian said with a sigh. Her voice sounded playful, but the emotion in her eyes was pure, unmistakable envy.
If fate hadn’t played its tricks, she and Xu Shijiu might have had a relationship like that. Then again, maybe not. Xu Shijiu had disliked her when they were younger, and it wasn’t just a little.
She had hated the formula Ling Mian prepared, always throwing the bottle to the floor. It was the same with toys. No matter what Ling Mian tried to give her, she would never accept it. Anyone else could calm her down, but no matter what her biological sister did, it only made her cry harder.
Yet even though she showed such dislike, Xu Shijiu still often chose to follow her around.
“Why not go find your own sister? The Ling family is a big one. You must have plenty of siblings,” Xu Shijiu replied. The look she gave Ling Mian was completely different from the one she gave her sister. When she looked at Xu Manyue, there was trust and concern. But with Ling Mian, her gaze was distant and guarded. That sharp contrast made Ling Mian feel a quiet kind of sadness and helplessness.
“You really are something else,” Ling Mian muttered under her breath.
“Why are you trying to act so close to me?” Xu Shijiu said coldly. She could not stand the tone Ling Mian used, or the way she acted like they were on familiar terms.
Even if she now knew it had all been a misunderstanding, that didn’t mean she could simply pretend it had never happened. Some things leave a scar. Some things stay with you. A knot in the heart cannot be untied just because someone says it was all a mistake.
Xu Manyue, knowing the tension between the two, quickly stepped in to smooth things over.
“You two need to stop fighting the second you see each other.”
Ling Mian’s lips twitched. What did she mean by “you two”? She had barely said a word. Xu Shijiu had been the one constantly throwing jabs.
“Hmph.” Xu Shijiu let out a short grunt, turned her head, and refused to look at Ling Mian anymore. She believed that not seeing someone was the best way to keep her peace.
Xu Manyue could only sigh in frustration. Xu Shijiu had grown into a calm and capable woman. There was no trace left of her old personality. Lin Xinyi’s departure had forced her to grow up completely. The only hint of her former self appeared during her bickering with Ling Mian.
Only when Xu Shijiu was arguing with Ling Mian could Xu Manyue catch a glimpse of the little sister who used to cling to her, the one who always needed her and loved to be spoiled.
“By the way, is that Omega Yi Lu still bothering you?” Xu Manyue asked with concern. Yi Lu had once been close to Xu Shijiu. In fact, it was Yi Lu’s sudden departure that had made Xu Shijiu stop believing in promises. Lately, Yi Lu had been showing up around her again, and Xu Manyue feared she might hurt her all over again.
“I can handle her,” Xu Shijiu said, shaking her head. To be honest, she didn’t take Yi Lu seriously anymore. People change. That childhood friendship didn’t mean much to her now.
But Xu Manyue still felt uneasy. She knew the reason Xu Shijiu had suddenly decided to let her take Lin Xinyi away was because of a message from Yi Lu. No one knew what that message said.
“I’m an Alpha. She’s just an Omega. What could she possibly do to me?” Xu Shijiu said with a faint smile. The memory of Yi Lu desperately trying to get close to her now felt more laughable than touching.
An Omega lowering herself like that just to pursue an Alpha. Xu Shijiu wondered if Yi Lu’s parents even knew what their daughter had been doing.
Xu Manyue sighed again.
“I got a call from Uncle Yi this morning. The Yi family is in trouble. Their company is not doing well and might go bankrupt. He asked if we could look after Yi Lu for old times’ sake.”
There were things Xu Manyue did not say. For example, she didn’t mention how Uncle Yi had nearly said the words outright, asking if Yi Lu could marry into the Xu family. He had been hinting at an arranged union, and every time, Xu Manyue had firmly rejected the idea.
She could not accept anyone except Liu Lingyan.
As for Xu Shijiu, ever since Lin Xinyi had left, her emotions had become cold and still, like a dead lake.
Why was it that no one in the Xu family could have a truly happy ending?
