You Are My Omega - Chapter 70
Lin Xinyi decided to take a leave of absence from school to study abroad and left the city.
The decision came very suddenly. When Lin Zhiling found out, her first reaction was confusion. If Lin Xinyi was leaving, why hadn’t she said anything? How could she just disappear like that without even telling her? But after visiting the Xu family, she got a clear confirmation from Xu Shijiu. His expression was far from good, and Lin Zhiling guessed that he must be feeling upset about Xinyi’s departure.
“Lin Zhiling.”
She looked up and saw that irritating face again. Her expression immediately darkened. She leaned back instinctively, putting some distance between herself and Ling Mian, and then said sharply, “Ling Mian, you’re not a student in this class. You’re not allowed in here.”
“Don’t be like that, little kitty,” Ling Mian replied playfully. Even though he was genuinely anxious and needed to confirm something important with Lin Zhiling, being too serious would likely attract attention from the other students.
“You’re always walking around with that smug smile, flirting with every Omega you see. I really don’t get what’s wrong with you,” Zhiling said, clearly annoyed by his behavior.
“Come outside with me for a bit. I need to talk to you,” Ling Mian continued with a grin. Zhiling’s first instinct was to refuse, but when she met his eyes, she saw something rare. There was a seriousness in his gaze that she had never seen before. It stirred something in her, and she reluctantly agreed.
Ling Mian led Lin Zhiling to a quiet grove behind the school before he finally stopped walking. What he needed to say wasn’t exactly a huge deal, but it wasn’t small either. The fewer people who knew, the better. This was a mess he had gotten himself into, but if others found out, the person who would be dragged into trouble was Xu Shijiu.
“What exactly do you want to talk about?” Lin Zhiling, unusually patient, didn’t pull her hand away or show any signs of irritation.
She had a strong feeling that Ling Mian really did have something important to say today. He wasn’t acting like his usual playful self at all.
“I want to ask you something about Lin Xinyi,” Ling Mian said, only after making sure there was no one else nearby.
“Xinyi?” Lin Zhiling looked confused. “What about her? She went to study acting in France, didn’t she? What’s there to ask?”
Weren’t Ling Mian and Lin Xinyi filming something together? Why was he so concerned about her all of a sudden?
“That’s what I want to talk about,” Ling Mian said with a serious expression. “Why did Lin Xinyi leave for France so suddenly? Did she contact you before she left?”
Lin Zhiling went quiet. She hesitated, clearly struggling with whether or not to tell him the truth. “Why are you asking all these questions?”
Xinyi had left without a word. Even now, Lin Zhiling hadn’t been able to reach her. According to Xu Shijiu, Lin Xinyi had taken on a project overseas and was too busy to check her phone. That was the reason given for the lack of contact.
At first, that explanation seemed reasonable. But as time passed, Zhiling started to feel that something wasn’t right.
“I…” Ling Mian didn’t know how to explain.
Xu Shijiu’s identity was too sensitive. Ling Mian himself didn’t have a firm place in the Ling family yet. He didn’t know what would happen once the family patriarch officially named a successor. If Xu Shijiu came to the Ling family now, it would be like walking straight into danger.
Lin Zhiling wasn’t the type to leak secrets, but knowing the truth could still be dangerous. Ling Mian couldn’t bring himself to say anything that would put her at risk.
“If you don’t have a proper reason, I’m leaving,” Lin Zhiling said and turned to go. She was testing him, trying to force out the secret he was hiding. But after walking some distance, she still hadn’t heard him call her back.
Finally, she turned around, unable to hold back her curiosity. What she saw made her laugh. The tall Alpha was squatting by the side of the path, looking so downcast that he resembled a sad little puppy. She couldn’t help but chuckle. In her memory, Ling Mian was always a shameless flirt with a carefree attitude. She had never seen him like this before.
Honestly, when Ling Mian wasn’t being such a clown, he was actually a decent Alpha. He was even kind of amusing.
“I didn’t hear from Xinyi before she left. She just left without saying anything. I’ve tried contacting her since, but I haven’t been able to reach her at all.”
Ling Mian hadn’t expected to get an answer so easily. He looked up suddenly, surprised, and saw Lin Zhiling’s face lit up with a gentle smile. He couldn’t help but smile back.
“Thank you, Lin Zhiling.”
“You don’t need to thank me. It’s just information. I still don’t know what happened to Xinyi or where she is now.” Zhiling’s voice fell again. She was Xinyi’s best friend, yet now she didn’t even know what was happening in her life. That hurt.
“From what you’re saying… have you asked the Lin family to look into it already?” Ling Mian asked cautiously. He didn’t want to push her, but what else could he do?
“Yes, but we haven’t found anything so far,” Lin Zhiling sighed. This whole situation felt off. Her parents were also deeply worried.
It felt like an unknown force was blocking their investigation.
For the Lin family to hit a wall like this, there were only two possible explanations. Either another powerful group was interfering, or it was the Xu family. More specifically, Xu Shijiu.
Ling Mian believed the second option was more likely. Back at the airport, Xu Shijiu had told Lin Xinyi to go home with him. Until the plane took off, Ling Mian had not seen Xinyi board it. That meant she probably never got on the flight.
If she hadn’t left the country, then she was still in China. Most likely, she was with Xu Shijiu.
Right now, the head of the Xu family, Xu Manyue, was still in the hospital recovering from serious injuries. She was in no condition to manage the company. That meant Xu Shijiu could do whatever he wanted without anyone stopping him.
Mo Jinlan had been upset ever since Lin Xinyi disappeared. She hadn’t even had the chance to break up Lin Xinyi and Xu Shijiu yet. And now, Xinyi had gone to a place she couldn’t reach.
Then, one day, she received a mysterious phone call that told her something shocking.
She felt both relieved and furious. She immediately called the police and contacted Lin Zhiling. Zhiling was Xinyi’s best friend. If she knew what Xu Shijiu had done, there was no way she would still believe that someone like him could ever be right for Lin Xinyi.
The police received the report but didn’t dare act rashly against one of the most powerful companies in the city. Instead, they made a phone call to the Xu family head to verify the situation.
When Xu Manyue answered the call, she was genuinely frightened. The report claimed that Xu Shijiu was illegally detaining an Omega and attempting to force them against their will.
This kind of accusation is extremely serious for an Alpha. Omegas are now incredibly rare across the country, and there are many laws specifically created to protect them. There is no denying that what Xu Shijiu has done is wrong. But in the midst of trying to handle things peacefully, this unexpected situation suddenly emerged.
After hanging up the call, Xu Manyue immediately went to find Xu Shijiu and played back the recording from her earlier phone conversation.
“Xiao Jiu, you can’t keep Xinyi locked up like this anymore. This time I managed to deflect the issue, but only because the person who reported it was using a voice changer, making it sound like a prank call. But what if next time they report it with their real voice? Or worse, what if they go straight to the academy that the rumors say Lin Xinyi is attending and try to verify it? If we don’t handle this now, things are going to spiral out of control.”
Xu Manyue spoke with all the patience and concern she could muster, trying to convince Xu Shijiu to let Lin Xinyi out of that room. But Xu Shijiu remained completely calm the entire time.
“I won’t let her go,” he said firmly.
Those three words made Xu Manyue so furious her vision blurred. She clutched her injury, which was throbbing in pain.
“Xiao Jiu, please listen to your sister just this once, alright? If you keep this up, the police will take you away. Do you understand what it means to pull back from the edge?”
“Lin Xinyi is my fiancée,” Xu Shijiu replied, unwavering.
“Yes, she is your fiancée, but that doesn’t give you the right to control where she goes. You don’t have the right to confine her in your home. Do you understand that?” Xu Manyue’s voice was serious and gentle. “Lin Xinyi is a living, breathing person. She is not like Bai Tuan or Hei Tuan, pets that can be kept in cages at the vet because of their health. Xinyi has thoughts, hopes, and dreams. She longs for freedom. She is not your possession. She is your fiancée, and nothing more.”
Xu Shijiu seemed to finally take in her words and lowered his head.
A flicker of hope lit up in Xu Manyue’s eyes. At least he was reacting. Now she just had to keep pushing gently.
“If she leaves, she won’t come back,” Xu Shijiu murmured.
Xu Manyue’s heart ached for him. She reached out and pulled him into her arms.
“Sister understands. Our Xiao Jiu only did something so extreme because you feel insecure. So let’s stop this now, alright? Let’s go apologize to Xinyi together. Admit that you were wrong. Can we do that?”
“Even if she was hiding things from you, the fact that you kept her locked in a room for this long is going too far. Do you understand that, Xiao Jiu?”
“Sister…”
“Yes, I’m here. Don’t be afraid.”
Only now, as Xu Shijiu trembled in her arms and admitted his fear, did Xu Manyue realize that deep down, he had never really changed. He was still that boy who, whenever he felt lost or scared, would call her “Sister” and seek comfort in her embrace.
“Sister, I want to cancel the engagement.”
It was like thunder crashing in Xu Manyue’s ears. She stared at him in disbelief.
“What did you say?”
“Sister, I’m letting her go. I don’t want to continue like this anymore. Please, help me take her away.”
