You Are My Omega - Chapter 64
When Lin Xinyi returned home, she expected that Xu Shijiu, who should have been off work by then, would already be there. But the house was empty. At first, she thought maybe she had simply come back early. However, after checking the time on her phone, she realized she was actually home much later than usual.
She picked up her two cats, Blackie and Whitey, who had run up and rubbed against her legs while meowing non-stop. Then, she collapsed onto the couch, exhausted. Normally, they could finish shooting scenes quickly, but today’s kissing scene had dragged on endlessly. She had no idea how many times they had to reshoot it.
At that moment, Lin Xinyi had no idea that Xu Shijiu had witnessed the entire kissing scene between her and Ling Mian.
Xu Shijiu was already in a bad mood. But today, everything just seemed to go wrong all at once. After returning from the film set to the company, she was immediately met with trouble. Grandpa Xu had shown up unannounced and even went as far as to bypass her authority and call the other board members for a shareholder meeting.
Technically, with the number of shares Grandpa Xu currently held, he did not have the right to call such a meeting. But he liked to use the influence of being the grandfather of the legal representative of Xu Corporation. That made most board members hesitate to challenge him.
President Xu had disagreed with Grandpa Xu’s ideas many times in past meetings. They often clashed. But Grandpa Xu had raised her since she was a child. Although she never gave him much face and never agreed to any of his proposals, the treatment he received from her was still better than what other directors and shareholders got.
They were related by blood, after all. And in the past, whenever Grandpa Xu pulled a stunt like this, President Xu eventually let the meeting proceed without too much resistance.
Grandpa Xu never intended to notify someone he didn’t even consider family. In his mind, Xu Shijiu was just an outsider taking up a position that belonged to the Xu family. But before the meeting could even begin, Xu Shijiu had already heard the news and arrived.
“Grandpa Xu, it’s been a while. Are you really holding a meeting without even informing me, the CEO? Temporary or not, I still have full authority over this position.” Xu Shijiu smiled, but there was no warmth in her eyes as she stared at Grandpa Xu sitting at the head of the table.
His face immediately darkened. Watching her slowly roll her wheelchair closer, he gave a cold laugh.
“I just thought you could use some rest. This job is exhausting, after all. Even if you are an alpha, your body is clearly too weak for this. I was only thinking of your well-being.”
“Exactly, young President Xu. Your grandfather is doing this for your sake. How can you speak to him so rudely?”
“She really has no sense of respect at all.”
“If President Xu hadn’t been injured, this kid wouldn’t even be here running the company.”
“Even with her injury, there are others more qualified to take over. Doesn’t she have a father and a grandfather?”
The room was full of complaints. Xu Shijiu’s expression stayed calm, but her hand, resting loosely on the armrest of her wheelchair, was covered in cold sweat. She was trying hard to adapt, trying to grow stronger, but facing so many people at once was still nerve-wracking, even if she had mentally prepared herself.
“Quiet!” the secretary called out at just the right moment.
“Oh? And you, Miss Secretary, don’t think the young president needs some rest?” Grandpa Xu smiled coldly. To him, Xu Shijiu looked far too fragile to be a proper alpha. She lacked the presence and dominance he expected from one. He would never feel at ease leaving the Xu family company in her hands.
“President Xu instructed me to support the young president fully. And if anyone tries to cause trouble, well… if certain details were to accidentally leak to the media…”
The secretary didn’t finish her sentence, but her meaning was crystal clear. Those who had been making noise immediately fell silent. Only a few remained calm and had stayed out of the earlier commotion.
The secretary looked around at the suddenly quiet room. Then she glanced at Grandpa Xu, who was now fuming but unable to respond. She smiled in satisfaction. Some things didn’t need to be spelled out clearly. A subtle warning was enough.
“Grandpa Xu, based on your shares, you don’t have the authority to preside over this meeting.” Xu Shijiu waited until the room had settled before speaking.
Now Grandpa Xu’s face turned completely dark. He never imagined that one day this alpha, someone he still couldn’t accept as family, would dare speak to him like this.
“And what if I insist on running this meeting today? What can you do to stop me?”
“The meeting is dismissed,” Xu Shijiu said firmly, without a trace of hesitation.
If this had happened in private and Grandpa Xu had softened his tone, maybe she would have taken a step back. But this was different. This was her sister’s company, a company built from nothing. Grandpa Xu had no hand in its creation and did not support it from the start. If the company’s rules were broken now, and it fell apart before her sister came back, how could she possibly explain that?
“And what gives you the right? Xu Shijiu, you are nothing but a child abandoned by your parents. What right do you have to manage the Xu family company? What right do you have to kick me out?”
Grandpa Xu was so angry he completely lost control and revealed the truth in front of everyone.
To him, Xu Corporation belonged to the Xu family, and since Xu Shijiu wasn’t part of that family, she had no right to even be in the company, let alone manage it. If she refused to step down and if Xu Manyue insisted on defending her, then he would expose her identity for all to see.
Let everyone know. Let the media know too.
“Grandpa Xu, you’re saying that again?” An older, well-dressed shareholder chuckled and shook his head. “You already told us this before, and President Xu clarified everything. Are you really going to deny your own granddaughter now?”
Everyone had been curious about whether or not the young president was truly a member of the Xu family. But after President Xu made her stance clear through personal calls, no one dared question it again.
Grandpa Xu might get away with his behavior because of family ties. But the rest of them weren’t family. They were just business partners. If President Xu decided to come after them, she would not hold back.
Xu Shijiu appeared calm on the outside, but inside, she was forcing herself to stay composed. Her fingernails dug into her palm as she tried to stay collected. She couldn’t afford to show weakness in front of Grandpa Xu.
“I’ve already called my son back. He’s just outside the door. If I, as the grandfather, am too old and confused to know whether Xu Shijiu is my granddaughter, then surely her father will know.”
As the door opened, Mr. Xu slowly walked into the room. Perhaps because the situation was more serious than usual, he actually looked more alert than his usual disoriented self.
“Father, why did you call me here? I still have to practice piano.”
“Piano, piano. All you do is practice piano. You are so absorbed in it that you don’t even realize Xu Corporation is being taken over by an outsider!” Grandpa Xu was furious. If his son had even a shred of business sense, things would never have gotten to this point.
“I just came back from visiting Manyue at the hospital. Isn’t Shijiu managing the company?” Mr. Xu replied, sounding much more clear-headed than before.
Xu Shijiu never expected to hear her father speak so gently and call her by name, “Shijiu.” It wasn’t an exaggeration to say that, in that moment, she even suspected someone might be impersonating him.
“Xu Shijiu was someone you picked up back then. She was never a child of our Xu family. You know that very well,” Grandpa Xu said, certain that his son would stand firmly by his side. After all, over the years, Xu Father had never shown genuine care toward either Xu Manyue or Xu Shijiu. He had always appeared indifferent.
“What are you talking about, Father? Shijiu is my daughter,” Xu Father replied, as if he had just heard a ridiculous joke. “How could I mistake the child my wife carried for ten months and gave birth to?”
Grandpa Xu was stunned. He never imagined things would turn out like this. Xu Father had always held a grudge over the car accident, and he had never shown a kind face to this so-called illegitimate child. Now, hearing him say such things was completely unexpected.
“What are you saying, son? Have you lost your mind?”
“Father, I think it’s you who needs to rest. You’re clearly exhausted and confused.”
Grandpa Xu noticed the quiet whispers spreading among the shareholders and board members. He started to panic, his earlier confidence slipping away. Xu Father, on the other hand, deliberately put on a concerned expression.
“Father, I really think you should get your health checked.”
Infuriated, Grandpa Xu stormed out of the room. Before coming to the company, Xu Father had visited the hospital. There was no doubt in his mind that Xu Manyue had orchestrated all of this. Well then, his granddaughter had truly become skilled, using every tactic he once taught her against him.
Naturally, the meeting was dismissed. Soon, the only ones left in the room were Xu Shijiu and her father.
Xu Shijiu looked at her father with a complicated expression. She wanted to ask why he came back, why he helped cover up the truth. But in the end, she said nothing.
Xu Father said nothing either. Without a word, he turned and left. He had already done what Xu Manyue asked of him. As far as he was concerned, the matter of Xu Shijiu’s identity was now handled. What happened next was no longer his responsibility.
“Young President Xu, it’s getting late. Would you like the driver to take you home?” the secretary suggested. Today’s company matters were all wrapped up, yet the young president remained sitting in the office, not showing any sign of leaving. It was unusual. Was it because of Grandpa Xu and Xu Father?
“I’ll sit a little longer,” Xu Shijiu replied, shaking her head. She didn’t want to go home.
“Miss Lin is probably waiting for you and getting worried,” the secretary added, hoping that would persuade her to return. But to her surprise, Xu Shijiu only shook her head again. There was no hesitation this time, unlike before.
What the secretary didn’t know was that she had hit a sensitive nerve. Xu Shijiu wasn’t troubled because of Grandpa Xu or her father. What weighed on her mind was Lin Xinyi.
