You Are My Omega - Chapter 62
Xu Manyue often could not bring herself to sleep at night. Except for the few times when the effects of medication knocked her out, she stayed awake as long as she could. She was waiting for her.
After Xu Shijiu drove Liu Lingyan away, Liu Lingyan still returned almost every night to see Xu Manyue. The bodyguards had received instructions from the head of the family not to stop her, so she was allowed to enter the hospital room without any issue.
Liu Lingyan knew that Xu Manyue was never actually asleep.
And Xu Manyue knew that Liu Lingyan did not want her to be awake.
Liu Lingyan assumed tonight would be the same. She thought Xu Manyue would quietly pretend to sleep like always. But soon after she entered the room, she heard Xu Manyue’s hoarse voice.
“Yanyan…”
Just two syllables, yet they were full of emotion. So familiar, yet so distant. Words she used to hear all the time now felt like they came from a completely different world.
Liu Lingyan froze. Her hand, which had been reaching for the cotton swab soaked in warm water, stayed suspended in midair.
Xu Manyue slowly opened her eyes. She stared at the ceiling, not daring to look in Liu Lingyan’s direction. She was afraid that if she met her eyes, Liu Lingyan might run away without giving her a chance to speak.
“You are awake…” Liu Lingyan’s voice trembled. Part of her wanted to run. Her mind told her to leave, to protect herself and her emotions. But she could not move.
She could not bear to leave.
“I have been awake the whole time,” Xu Manyue replied with a bitter smile. But deep down, she knew she was not supposed to be.
“Why tonight?” Liu Lingyan asked quietly. There was a trace of pain in her voice. If Xu Manyue had stayed silent, she could have kept pretending. Why did she have to break the silence now?
“You should stop coming,” Xu Manyue said as she lowered her gaze. She had not meant to wake up tonight, but she could not keep allowing this to happen.
Liu Lingyan had been visiting every night for a week. One or two nights might have been excused, but continuing like this was dangerous. If this went on next week, and the week after, how long could her body take it? And more importantly, she should not be held back like this anymore.
Liu Lingyan had not expected the first words from Xu Manyue after the accident to be something like this. It left her in a daze. But when she thought about it, it was always Xu Manyue making the final decisions between them.
It was Xu Manyue who proposed the divorce.
It was Xu Manyue who suggested removing the Alpha mark.
And now, it was still Xu Manyue who was asking her to leave.
“Alright,” Liu Lingyan replied softly.
Xu Manyue shut her eyes tightly, afraid that her tears would betray her. In the quiet hospital room, even the softest sounds were loud. She heard the footsteps slowly fading, followed by the sound of the door opening, then closing.
When she opened her eyes again, she was alone.
In the end, she had lost her again.
This result should not have come as a surprise. Xu Manyue had prepared herself for it over and over again. But when the moment truly came, she still felt a deep and heavy sadness in her chest.
This was the right outcome.
Liu Lingyan was no longer marked. She was an Omega who now had the chance to find a partner a hundred or a thousand times better than her.
All Xu Manyue had ever done was make her suffer and hesitate.
“President Xu,” the secretary said as she entered on schedule.
“You’re here,” Xu Manyue replied, her voice faint and distant. The secretary felt her heart ache hearing it.
“Would you like me to turn on the lights?”
“No need. Just report to me,” Xu Manyue said calmly.
“Old Master Xu has returned. He is currently staying in a hotel. According to our sources, he has contacted your father. As you predicted, he may be planning to reveal Vice President Xu’s background to pressure the board into choosing your father as the new leader.”
“He never rests, does he,” Xu Manyue said with a cold laugh. “Have all the arrangements been completed?”
“Yes, everything has been prepared. Both Vice President Xu and Miss Lin now have bodyguards assigned to them,” the secretary confirmed.
Because of Xu Manyue’s injury, the bodyguards had gone through an additional round of extreme training. Although a few did not make it through, the majority returned safely and stronger than ever. Their skills were enough to prove their qualifications.
The secretary became more certain that President Xu’s injury had not been due to their failure.
No, if anything, it was their failure to stop her from throwing herself into danger.
“You have worked hard. How is Shijiu doing?”
“Vice President Xu is very talented. She was unsure at first, but now she is learning quickly and becoming more organized.”
Xu Manyue’s expression softened.
“I knew Shijiu would not disappoint me.”
Her talent and ability had always been there. Now was the time to awaken it.
“But she still has a year before she comes of age. Don’t you think this is a bit too soon?” the secretary asked gently. She was a mother herself. Her own child was about the same age, and it hurt to watch Shijiu shoulder so much responsibility.
“Only by becoming strong can Shijiu protect herself, and protect the people she cares about,” Xu Manyue said quietly. Of course her heart ached. Of course she had hesitated. But if she did not train her now, when would she?
“Keep an eye on the Mo family as well,” she added. “It was Mo Jinlan who leaked the information this time.”
From the anonymous package at the start to the distorted voice on the call, everything had been orchestrated by Mo Jinlan. And the person feeding her the information could only be her grandfather, the same man who never stopped talking about bloodlines.
There was a knock at the door.
Xu Manyue frowned. The secretary checked her watch.
“Who could be coming this late?”
“Who are you looking for?” asked the bodyguard outside.
“I’m here to see Xu Manyue. Your president.”
The voice was unfamiliar.
Xu Manyue was certain she had never heard it before.
“What is your business with President Xu? She is currently resting. If you have something to say, we can pass the message along,” the bodyguard replied cautiously, not lowering his guard.
“This is a matter of great importance. I’m afraid none of you are qualified to deliver this message on my behalf.”
Xu Manyue let out a cold laugh. Such arrogance. People like this showed up all the time, thinking far too highly of themselves.
“It’s about Xu Shijiu’s parentage. Does that not warrant a face-to-face conversation with your President Xu?”
Xu Shijiu’s parentage.
The words exploded in Xu Manyue’s heart like a bomb. Her eyes widened suddenly, and in her shock, she sat up too quickly. Pain shot through her chest, and her wound tore open again. Blood quickly soaked into the gauze, turning it a bright red.
“Let her in,” she ordered immediately.
“Yes, President Xu. Please don’t worry. I’ll open the door right away,” the secretary said as she rushed to obey.
Outside, the Alpha showed no surprise at all, as if she had expected the door to open the moment she spoke those words. Calm and composed, she stepped into the room with ease.
“Ling Mian…” Xu Manyue spoke the Alpha’s name aloud.
When Lin Xinyi had joined the film crew, she had conducted a background check on the cast. Ling Mian, daughter of the prominent Ling family from Country F, had come up during the search. The Ling family was not one to provoke lightly. Because of this, Xu Manyue had only performed a preliminary investigation and hadn’t dug deeper. She never imagined that one day, Ling Mian would show up with information about Xu Shijiu’s origins as leverage to request a private talk.
“A pleasure to meet you, President Xu. I’m Ling Mian, from the Ling family of Country F,” Ling Mian said calmly, knowing full well that Xu Manyue was already aware of her background. She saw no reason to hide it.
“The Ling family, such a massive presence, yet you’ve come all the way to this small city just to see me? I’m only the head of the modest Xu family. I don’t know the reason behind your visit, but I must say, Miss Ling, I’m truly flattered,” Xu Manyue said with a faint smile. Despite her pale complexion, the sharp edge in her eyes could not be hidden.
Ling Mian had mentioned Xu Shijiu’s parentage.
Xu Manyue was not afraid of the public discovering that Xu Shijiu was not biologically related to the Xu family. What concerned her was the possibility that Xu Shijiu might unknowingly be connected to some vast and complicated family like the Ling family. That kind of connection could bring unpredictable consequences.
Many people dreamed of marrying into wealth. Many longed to discover they were the long-lost heiress of a powerful family. But only those who had lived through it knew what those dreams were truly made of. Hidden rivalries, private scandals, illegitimate children, and endless battles over inheritance. Each one brought pain and complications, not the fairytale life people imagined.
“Please don’t be so guarded, President Xu. I didn’t come here with any bad intentions. I haven’t even told anyone why I made this visit,” Ling Mian said with a calm and friendly smile. She wasn’t at all bothered by Xu Manyue’s wariness. In fact, the caution made her feel more at ease.
“You’ve been in this city for some time now, haven’t you?” Xu Manyue asked. She remembered her earlier investigation had revealed that Miss Ling had been living here and attending school.
At the time, she assumed it was simply because her acting work had brought her here. But now, she was beginning to suspect otherwise.
Maybe Ling Mian had another purpose all along.
“It has been a while,” Ling Mian admitted. “I mainly wanted to observe someone very important to you. Xu Shijiu.”
“What did my sister do to catch the attention of the great Miss Ling from the prestigious Ling family?” Xu Manyue asked. She clenched her fingers tightly into her palm, digging her nails into her skin in an effort to keep her composure and stay conscious. She could not afford to faint now.
For the first time, Xu Manyue deeply hated how weak her body had become. She hated that she had lost her strength and presence in front of someone like Ling Mian. She regretted mistreating her body over the years, pushing herself past the point of proper recovery and ending up in this condition.
“She didn’t do anything,” Ling Mian said softly. Her gaze became complicated, emotions rising just behind her calm expression. “It’s just that…”
“She’s, my sister.”
