You Are My Omega - Chapter 61
Lin Zhiling thought she would never have to see that flirtatious Alpha, Ling Mian, again. But the next day, while she was bent over her desk doing homework, she suddenly heard that irritating voice.
“Little kitten.”
Her whole body stiffened. She heard whispers around her as other students began murmuring about the Alpha. Lin Zhiling kept her head down, pretending not to hear anything. That Alpha was really annoying. Why was she even here at school? Could it be… could it be that she had come to find her?
Ling Mian noticed Lin Zhiling trying her best to ignore her and pretend she did not exist. That only made her want to tease her more. She really wanted to see her angry again, with her cheeks puffed out. If she could, she would love to poke her again just like before.
“Ling Mian, what are you doing here?”
Ling Mian’s smile faded immediately as she looked toward Mo Jinlan. She let out a short laugh, cold and dismissive.
“Am I not allowed to be here? Is this your classroom? If I’m not supposed to be here, then neither are you.”
Mo Jinlan was caught off guard by the intensity of Ling Mian’s reaction. She assumed her words had somehow upset her and reached out to grab Ling Mian’s hand.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were back from overseas? We should catch up. It’s been so long since we last saw each other.”
Ling Mian laughed silently to herself. Yes, it had been a long time. But the Mo Jinlan in her memories was no longer the person standing in front of her now.
“I didn’t have time. I was filming on set.”
This was not the time to fall out with Mo Jinlan. Ling Mian was unsure what secrets Mo Jinlan might still hold that could harm the Xu family or Xu Shijiu.
She could not afford to act recklessly.
“Filming? Lin Xinyi is filming too,” Mo Jinlan said cheerfully. She was caught up in the excitement of reuniting with a childhood friend and failed to notice the flicker of emotion in Ling Mian’s eyes. If she had been more cautious, she might have caught it.
“That’s right,” Ling Mian replied.
She had already investigated Mo Jinlan and knew that she had feelings for Lin Xinyi. So she was not surprised to hear her name mentioned. Still, she pretended to be shocked and asked, “You like Lin Xinyi?”
“Yes,” Mo Jinlan replied without hesitation. Her smile turned proud. “Let me tell you, Lin Xinyi is a student in this class. She’s a top-level Omega, and I’m a top-level Alpha. Don’t you think we make a perfect match?”
Ling Mian kept smiling. “Then since I’m also a top-level Alpha, wouldn’t that mean I’m a perfect match for this top-level Omega too?”
Mo Jinlan’s expression froze. She stared at Ling Mian in disbelief.
“Are you serious? Ling Mian, I’m the one who has my eye on Lin Xinyi. You haven’t even met her properly, and you’re already interested?”
“Interested in what exactly?”
Both Ling Mian and Mo Jinlan turned at the sound of the voice. Standing there was Lin Zhiling, her face cold.
“Oh no, the little kitten heard us,” Ling Mian said playfully, raising an eyebrow.
“Ling Mian!” Lin Zhiling glared. She hated Ling Mian’s careless attitude more than anything.
“I’m warning both of you. Don’t even think about Lin Xinyi. She is Xu Shijiu’s fiancée, her Omega. No matter how high your levels are, you can’t come between them. You’d better keep your distance.”
“Xu Shijiu can’t even stand on her own. What makes her worthy of having someone like Lin Xinyi?” Mo Jinlan said without any hesitation. Now that Xu Manyue was injured and would take a while to recover, and with the Xu family elder soon returning, Xu Shijiu’s time of peace in the company would not last much longer.
When that time came, anything could happen.
Ling Mian gave Mo Jinlan a small tug, then turned to look at Lin Zhiling, who was glaring like an angry kitten. She asked, “Are Lin Xinyi and Xu Shijiu really that close?”
“Yes. No one can come between them,” Lin Zhiling replied loudly and clearly. She deliberately raised her voice so everyone in the school would hear her. She wanted to end all the rumors and stop any Alpha from thinking they had a chance with Lin Xinyi.
There was no room for a third person between Lin Xinyi and Xu Shijiu.
That evening, Xu Shijiu and Lin Xinyi were finally able to spend some time together at home. It was a rare break. They relaxed, watched television, and played with their two chubby cats.
But before long, Lin Zhiling came storming in.
“Zhiling, perfect timing. I just made tea. Come have a few cups with us,” Lin Xinyi said with a smile. But as soon as she saw Lin Zhiling’s expression, she paused. “Who made you so angry?”
She had never seen Lin Zhiling this upset.
“It’s that annoying Alpha, Ling Mian!” Lin Zhiling said, still fuming. She decided not to mention Mo Jinlan, not wanting to ruin the mood.
“Ling Mian?” Lin Xinyi looked puzzled. “She’s always been nice to me. I’ve never seen her behave badly. Why does she always get under your skin?”
“How would I know?” Lin Zhiling said, gulping down a cup of tea, clearly still annoyed.
Xu Shijiu, who had been quietly watching TV, put down the remote and turned to look at them. There was a strange light in her eyes.
“Ling Mian. Who is that?”
Lin Xinyi froze. She suddenly felt a little guilty and forced a small laugh. Before she could reply, Lin Zhiling quickly jumped in to change the subject.
“Just a student at school. Same grade, different class. She was standing near our classroom today. We have no idea what she was doing there.”
Xu Shijiu turned her head to Lin Xinyi.
“Really?”
“Yes, of course. What else could it be?” Lin Xinyi replied, choosing to keep the truth to herself.
Xu Shijiu was already exhausted from managing the company and undergoing intense physical therapy. She had lost weight from all the stress. Lin Xinyi did not want to burden her further with someone unimportant.
Besides, she and Ling Mian were only filming together. Nothing else had happened.
Since Lin Xinyi said it was nothing, Xu Shijiu chose to believe her.
She reached over for her crutch, which was leaning against the wall, and tried to stand. Lin Xinyi immediately rushed over to support her. Though unsteady, Xu Shijiu eventually managed to get to her feet.
“What are you doing? We just practiced that a moment ago. Aren’t you tired?” Lin Xinyi complained, though her tone held no real blame. Even if she said that, she could never actually stop her. All she could do was follow her lead and support her.
“Xu Shijiu can walk again?” Lin Zhiling stared in shock as she saw Xu Shijiu take a step forward. She was completely stunned.
“Oh, I forgot to tell you,” Lin Xinyi said with a smile so wide that her eyes turned into crescent moons. “The doctor said that as long as Shijiu keeps up her physical therapy, she’ll eventually be able to stand and walk on her own.”
Lin Xinyi never minded that Xu Shijiu needed a wheelchair. But Xu Shijiu had always cared about it. So this was truly a wonderful thing. She could stand again. She could walk again. That meant the world to her.
“This is such good news! Why didn’t you tell me earlier? Everyone in class cares about you two. Some have even been looking into your situation privately,” Lin Zhiling said, not daring to get too close or offer to help Xu Shijiu stand.
“Then you can go ahead and tell them,” Lin Xinyi said, making the decision on Xu Shijiu’s behalf. News like this deserved to be shared. Everyone who thought Xu Shijiu would be stuck in a wheelchair forever should know that she could now stand again. She was no longer what they called disabled.
But after just a few steps, Xu Shijiu was already breathing heavily. Lin Xinyi immediately insisted she rest. As Xu Shijiu looked at Lin Xinyi’s smile, she hesitated, then said quietly, “Maybe we shouldn’t tell too many people just yet.”
“Why not?” Lin Zhiling asked in confusion.
Lin Xinyi turned to look at Xu Shijiu. Her eyes were filled with confusion too. But when she saw the worry in Xu Shijiu’s gaze, she understood. Her reason returned as the emotional rush faded.
“Maybe that’s better,” Lin Xinyi said. “Zhiling, it’s probably best not to spread the word for now. We really don’t know what could happen at school.”
What she was guarding against was Mo Jinlan.
What Xu Shijiu was guarding against was the elder of the Xu family.
Xu Shijiu never imagined that one day she would be forced by her sister to take over company operations. But once she entered the company, she realized something even more clearly. The old patriarch of the Xu family would definitely come to confront her.
She was not truly a Xu family member. And the elder valued bloodline above all. Even if it meant letting the incompetent Xu father take over and run the company into the ground, he would never accept her in control.
Xu Shijiu understood this clearly. That was why she could not rest easy.
She had already imagined the reasons the patriarch would use to dismiss her from her position. Her disability alone was enough to shake the board’s confidence.
She wasn’t afraid of being dismissed. What she feared was that the elder might try to harm Lin Xinyi.
She was not strong enough yet to protect Lin Xinyi fully.
“I understand. Since you both said so, I promise I won’t say a word,” Lin Zhiling agreed without asking further.
After she left, Lin Xinyi turned back to Xu Shijiu and asked, “What are you worried about?”
“Nothing,” Xu Shijiu said, shaking her head.
“Really?” Lin Xinyi stared at her. Only a fool would believe that.
“Grandfather Xu,” Xu Shijiu admitted with a sigh.
Her honesty actually made Lin Xinyi feel a little heavy-hearted.
She looked at Xu Shijiu’s back and quietly sighed in her heart. Xu Shijiu always trusted her without hesitation. Even when she tried to hide something, once Lin Xinyi asked, she would always tell the truth.
But she herself… had not done the same.
She didn’t know if she was doing the right thing. She didn’t know how things would turn out in the future.
Xu Shijiu would definitely be angry. That much was certain. But would she forgive her afterward? That was something Lin Xinyi couldn’t predict.
At the hospital, the lights in the VIP room were already off. The night was deep and silent. Most people were sound asleep by now, but Xu Manyue was still wide awake.
Because of her carelessness, her wound had reopened several times. The burning pain had not gone away, and the IV drip was still connected. The heart monitor was still clipped to her finger because Xu Shijiu had insisted on it.
Xu Shijiu was afraid. Xu Manyue knew that.
She was afraid that she would give up on life, that she would try to end it.
But really, there was no need to worry.
After all, hell didn’t want her this time.
