You Are My Omega - Chapter 56
Fantuan, being sensitive, could already feel that something was different. Just a few days ago, Mama and Mommy had been with her together. But now, only Mama stayed. Mommy hadn’t come again. Mama’s eyes were red and swollen. It was clear she had been crying.
Liu Lingyan held Fantuan in her arms, staring out the hospital window. She hadn’t expected Xu Manyue to be the one to bring up the divorce, or that she had already scheduled an appointment for mark removal the next day.
How could she be so final? Was there no love left?
Her heart ached, but strangely, there was also a sense of relief. Liu Lingyan didn’t understand why she felt this way. Every time she saw Xu Manyue, her heart felt unbearably heavy. She couldn’t forget the image of her mother and brother lying lifeless on white hospital beds, their faces covered by stark white sheets.
She couldn’t pretend that those memories didn’t exist. She couldn’t move past it.
Maybe separating was the best thing for both of them.
“Sister-in-law…”
Liu Lingyan turned and saw Lin Xinyi and Xu Shijiu standing at the door. Fantuan immediately began to squirm in her arms, eager to go to them, calling out “Auntie” over and over again.
Each cry tugged at their hearts. Neither Xu Shijiu nor Lin Xinyi could say a word. Liu Lingyan didn’t speak either, and no one dared to step forward without her permission. Even though Lin Xinyi didn’t know the full story, she followed Xu Shijiu’s lead and stayed quiet.
“Come in. Fantuan’s been asking for you,” Liu Lingyan finally said. The complexity in her eyes flashed quickly before disappearing. Xu Shijiu probably didn’t know what had happened yet. And maybe it was better if she didn’t.
“Thank you, Sister-in-law.” Xu Shijiu didn’t dare hold onto any more hope. Her sister and Liu Lingyan had already finalized their divorce. Even calling her “Sister” now felt like a title that no longer belonged to her.
Liu Lingyan handed Fantuan to them and quietly stepped out of the room.
“Auntie, what happened to Mama and Mommy?” Fantuan’s small face was full of worry. She wiped away her tears now and then, her eyes confused.
Xu Shijiu didn’t know how to explain, but Lin Xinyi quickly pulled Fantuan into her arms. Even though she didn’t know the full reason behind the conflict, she instinctively began to comfort the little girl.
“Mommy suddenly had work, so she couldn’t come today. You got hurt, so Mama’s been really worried. Everything’s okay.”
“Really?” Fantuan asked with hesitation, her brows furrowed.
Meeting Fantuan’s searching gaze, Xu Shijiu nodded. “Yes, really.”
Due to the medication, Fantuan soon fell asleep again. Xu Shijiu and Lin Xinyi stayed by her side until she was deeply asleep before they left.
“Don’t frown so much. If you keep frowning, you’ll get wrinkles,” Lin Xinyi said gently as she touched the furrowed spot between Xu Shijiu’s brows.
Xu Shijiu wrapped her arms around Lin Xinyi’s waist and buried her face in her chest, inhaling the subtle scent of rose from Lin Xinyi’s Omega-blocking patch. It calmed her restless heart.
“You’re not going to ask me anything?” she murmured.
Lin Xinyi heard her voice, soft and low.
“I don’t know what happened. Will you tell me, Xu Shijiu?” she asked as she carefully brushed aside Xu Shijiu’s bangs and gently patted her head.
If she really wanted to know, it wouldn’t be hard to find out. There were plenty of clues. But she didn’t want to do it that way. She knew Xu Shijiu wouldn’t like it either. So she waited.
She waited for Xu Shijiu to come to her willingly. Waited for her to calm down. Waited for the moment she was ready to speak. Lately, Xu Shijiu’s emotional state had been so fragile. She had barely regained some weight, only to lose it again. That made Lin Xinyi worry deeply.
There were many times she wanted to confront her and demand answers, but when she saw the exhaustion in Xu Shijiu’s eyes, she couldn’t bring herself to be so harsh.
“Lin Xinyi…” Xu Shijiu didn’t answer her question directly. Instead, she called her name.
“I’m here,” Lin Xinyi replied softly.
“Lin Xinyi.”
“I’m here.”
“Lin Xinyi.”
“I’m right here. Don’t be afraid.”
Lin Xinyi took Xu Shijiu’s hand and realized it was trembling badly. It was also unnaturally cold. Her eyes instantly turned red, and her heart felt as though it had been hit with a heavy blow.
“I’m not scared,” Xu Shijiu said stubbornly. She was an Alpha. How could she be afraid?
“Of course. You’re not scared,” Lin Xinyi replied gently, choosing not to challenge her pride. She held her hand firmly and patted her back, trying to give her a sense of comfort and reassurance. She didn’t want Xu Shijiu to feel so exhausted anymore.
Only when Xu Shijiu finally released her embrace did Lin Xinyi take a step back and give her some space.
“Do you want to talk to Sister-in-law?” she asked.
“Yes,” Xu Shijiu nodded. She felt that she needed to have a conversation with Liu Lingyan.
Lin Xinyi tucked Fantuan in carefully, placed her favorite stuffed bear in her arms, then pushed the distracted Xu Shijiu out of the room. As soon as the door opened, they saw Sister-in-law waiting quietly outside.
“Is Fantuan asleep?” Liu Lingyan asked.
“She is. She’s sleeping soundly,” Lin Xinyi answered.
“That’s good.” Liu Lingyan finally let out a breath of relief. Ever since that argument, even when both mothers were there, Fantuan hadn’t been sleeping well.
“Sister-in-law, can I talk with you?” Xu Shijiu asked nervously. Meeting her uneasy gaze, Liu Lingyan couldn’t bring herself to say no.
“Alright. Let’s talk here,” she said.
Neither of them wanted to leave Fantuan alone. That was something none of them could accept.
“Sister-in-law, are you really going to end things with my sister like this?” Xu Shijiu asked, even though she already had an idea of the answer. She expected Liu Lingyan to be furious. After all, she had lost two family members in that car accident.
But to her surprise, Liu Lingyan was very calm. Her usually clear eyes were unreadable. She simply nodded.
“Yes.”
She could never truly let go of what happened. Xu Manyue couldn’t forgive herself either. Staying together would only mean continuing to hurt each other. If being together brought nothing but pain, then what was the point?
Were they going to keep punishing each other?
Besides, it was Xu Manyue who had initiated the divorce. Neither of them could bring themselves to forgive, so how could they move forward?
“What about Fantuan? What’s going to happen to her? She’s still hurt. Why couldn’t you at least wait until she healed before getting divorced?” Xu Shijiu’s heart ached for her niece.
“You both know how sensitive Fantuan is. Even if we don’t get divorced, she can still feel the tension between us. Honestly, there’s no real difference,” Liu Lingyan said quietly.
“No difference…” Xu Shijiu let out a bitter laugh. But the more she thought about it, the more she realized it was true.
Even if they didn’t go through with the divorce, what could really change between them? Nothing.
The cold distance between them couldn’t be erased. The emotional wall that stood between them wasn’t going to disappear.
“My sister isn’t at fault,” Xu Shijiu finally said. The car accident wasn’t her sister’s fault. Over the years, Xu Manyue had blamed herself countless times. Xu Shijiu didn’t want to be one more person piling on guilt. Especially not when Liu Lingyan was the person her sister had loved most.
If Liu Lingyan hated her sister, blamed her for everything, then how much more pain would her sister have to carry?
“You knew?” Liu Lingyan suddenly realized. She had thought Xu Shijiu didn’t know. But she did. They all did.
Xu Shijiu knew. Xu Manyue knew. Everyone involved in the accident had known—except her.
“She’s not at fault. Then whose fault is it?” Liu Lingyan asked softly. Her words were calm, but her meaning was clear.
Xu Shijiu didn’t dare look up. She couldn’t bring herself to meet Liu Lingyan’s eyes, afraid she might see the hatred there.
Liu Lingyan glanced at Xu Shijiu’s unmoving legs and felt the last of her anger dissolve. “You should go back. I’ll go stay with Fantuan now. Come visit often. Fantuan is really happy when she sees you.”
Lin Xinyi had been silent the entire time. As she listened to their conversation, she slowly pieced together the entire story. When she looked at the way Xu Shijiu’s back was hunched over, her heart ached with sympathy.
She couldn’t understand why fate had to be so cruel. Why did Xu Shijiu have to know so much? If she had never found out, how much easier would life have been for her? Knowing the truth often felt like the cruelest thing.
She hugged Xu Shijiu tightly. Her voice was steady and full of warmth. “Don’t worry. I’m still here.”
“You won’t leave me?” Xu Shijiu asked quietly.
Watching the two people she had admired most, once so inseparable, now so cold and distant—it broke her heart.
“I won’t leave you,” Lin Xinyi said firmly.
Maybe because of all the emotional stress, Xu Shijiu entered her Alpha susceptibility phase a few days later. She was taken to the Alpha observation wing at the hospital immediately.
She had to stay there for three or four days until her condition stabilized. During that time, the two kittens she often cared for were unusually quiet, and Lin Xinyi waited at the hospital door every day with them.
“Don’t wait anymore. She’s not coming back today either,” Xu Manyue said as she came home from work and opened the door, finding Lin Xinyi waiting there again.
Xu Shijiu was in a place with many other Alphas. For Lin Xinyi’s safety, both Xu Shijiu and Xu Manyue had firmly forbidden her from visiting. Lin Xinyi was frustrated about it and had tried to sneak in several times, only to be caught.
“Welcome back, Sister.” Lin Xinyi walked over and immediately smelled alcohol on her. She frowned. “Why are you drinking so much again? You already came home drunk yesterday.”
“It’s fine. I’m not drunk,” Xu Manyue said dismissively. If only she could actually get drunk. That way, she could forget at least some of the pain. But no matter how much she drank, it never worked.
Not even in her dreams did Liu Lingyan appear anymore, not once.
Not even in a dream did she want to see her again.
