You Are My Omega - Chapter 55
The sensitive Fantuan felt the change. For the past few days, both Mama and Mummy had been staying with her; suddenly, only Mama was left. Mummy stopped coming, and Mama’s eyes were severely bloodshot, a clear sign that she had been crying.
Liu Lingyan held Fantuan, gazing at the scenery outside the hospital window. She hadn’t expected Xu Manyue to take the initiative to bring up divorce nor did she expect her to book an appointment to have her mark removed the very next day.
How can she be so absolute? Does she not love me anymore…
Her heart ached, but more than pain, Liu Lingyan felt a sense of relief. She didn’t understand why she felt this way, but seeing Xu Manyue made her heart feel heavy. The image of her mother and brother lying on those white hospital beds, their faces covered by pure white sheets… would constantly flash before her eyes.
She truly could not face this matter without resentment. Perhaps separating like this was for the best.
“Sister-in-law…”
Liu Lingyan looked over and saw Lin Xinyi and Xu Shijiu. Fantuan began to struggle in her arms, eager to get to them, her little mouth incessantly calling out, “Little Auntie!”
Each cry tugged at the heartstrings of Xu Shijiu and Lin Xinyi. However, since Liu Lingyan hadn’t spoken, no one dared to step forward. Lin Xinyi didn’t understand what had happened between them, but she tactfully remained silent and still, just like Xu Shijiu.
“Come over. Fantuan has been clamoring to see you,” Liu Lingyan said, a flash of complexity crossing her eyes. Xu Shijiu likely didn’t know about the divorce yet—and if she didn’t, it was better kept that way.
“Thank you, Sister-in-law.” Xu Shijiu didn’t dare to harbor any more optimistic guesses. Her sister and sister-in-law had already processed the divorce papers; even calling her “Sister-in-law” felt like a title without substance now.
Liu Lingyan didn’t stay. After placing Fantuan in their arms, she stepped out.
“Little Auntie, what’s wrong with Mama and Mummy?” Fantuan’s small face was crumpled with worry, and she occasionally wiped away a stray tear.
Xu Shijiu found it difficult to explain, but Lin Xinyi immediately pulled Fantuan into her embrace. Even without knowing the details of the argument, she instinctively began to coax the child. “Mummy had a sudden work emergency, so she couldn’t come today. Mama is just in a bad mood because you’re hurt. It’s okay.”
Fantuan frowned hesitantly. “Really?”
Xu Shijiu met Fantuan’s searching gaze and nodded. “Yes, really.”
Due to the effects of her medication, it wasn’t long before Fantuan drifted off. Xu Shijiu and Lin Xinyi stayed by her side until she was fast asleep before leaving.
“Don’t frown so much. You’ll get wrinkles if you keep doing that.” Lin Xinyi didn’t press for answers; instead, she reached out to smooth the deep furrow in Xu Shijiu’s brow.
Xu Shijiu wrapped her arms around Lin Xinyi’s waist and buried her head in her chest. Sniffing the rose-scented Omega pheromones emanating from Lin Xinyi’s scent-blocking patch, she felt her heart finally find some solace.
“You aren’t asking me anything,” Xu Shijiu murmured.
“I don’t know what happened. Are you willing to tell me, Shijiu?” Lin Xinyi gently brushed Xu Shijiu’s bangs aside and stroked her head, her voice tender.
If she wanted to know, there were clues everywhere; it would be easy to find out. But she was unwilling to do so. She knew Xu Shijiu wouldn’t want her investigating behind her back, so she waited.
She waited for Xu Shijiu to take the initiative, to calm down, and to be ready to share. Xu Shijiu’s emotional state had been so poor lately; the little bit of weight she had managed to put on had vanished from the stress. It pained Lin Xinyi to see it. Every time she had a question on the tip of her tongue, seeing Xu Shijiu’s exhaustion made her lose the heart to press further.
“Lin Xinyi…” Xu Shijiu didn’t answer directly, but only called her name.
“Mm,” Lin Xinyi responded.
“Lin Xinyi.”
“I’m here. Don’t be afraid.”
Lin Xinyi grasped Xu Shijiu’s hand, only to realize it was trembling violently and unnaturally cold. Lin Xinyi’s eyes reddened instantly, her heart feeling as though it had been struck by a heavy hammer.
“I’m not afraid,” Xu Shijiu argued stubbornly. She was an Alpha, after all—how could she be afraid?
“Right, you aren’t afraid.” Lin Xinyi didn’t call out her stubbornness. She patted Xu Shijiu’s back and held her hand tight, hoping to provide a sense of security and ease her burden.
Eventually, Xu Shijiu pulled back from the embrace. Lin Xinyi took a small step back to give her space. “Are you going to see Sister-in-law?”
“Yes.” Xu Shijiu nodded. She felt it was necessary to have a talk with her.
Lin Xinyi tucked Fantuan in, placing her favorite teddy bear in her arms, then nudged a dazed Xu Shijiu out the door. As soon as the door opened, they saw Liu Lingyan standing guard outside.
“Is Fantuan asleep?” Liu Lingyan asked.
“She’s out cold,” Lin Xinyi replied.
“Good.” Liu Lingyan breathed a sigh of relief. Having witnessed their argument that day, Fantuan hadn’t been sleeping soundly, even with both of them watching over her.
“Sister-in-law, I want to talk to you.” Xu Shijiu spoke tentatively. Seeing the unease in Xu Shijiu’s eyes, Liu Lingyan couldn’t find it in her heart to refuse.
“Alright, let’s talk here.” If they left, no one would be guarding Fantuan, a result no one wanted.
“Sister-in-law… is it really going to end like this with my sister?” As Xu Shijiu asked this, she expected a flare of anger. After all, that car accident had cost Liu Lingyan two family members.
To her surprise, Liu Lingyan remained calm. Her usually clear eyes were now deep and unreadable. She simply nodded. “Yes.”
She couldn’t let go of the past, and Xu Manyue couldn’t forgive herself. Staying together would only be a form of mutual torture. What would be the point? To make each other suffer? Besides, Xu Manyue was the one who proposed the divorce. Neither of them could move past it.
“But what about Fantuan? She’s still hurt. Why couldn’t you wait until she recovered before divorcing?” Xu Shijiu’s heart ached for the child.
“You know how sensitive that child is. Even if we didn’t divorce, she would sense the atmosphere between us. There really… isn’t much of a difference,” Liu Lingyan said heavily.
“No difference…” Xu Shijiu wanted to laugh at the absurdity, but upon reflection, it was the truth. Even without the papers, what would change? Nothing. The stiff atmosphere wouldn’t thaw, and the chasm between them wouldn’t vanish.
“My sister wasn’t at fault,” Xu Shijiu managed to squeeze out. The accident wasn’t her sister’s fault, and her sister had blamed herself countless times over the years. She didn’t want one more person blaming her sister—especially not the woman her sister loved most.
If Liu Lingyan hated her, how much more pain would her sister be in?
“So you knew…” Liu Lingyan said, stunned. She had thought Xu Shijiu was in the dark. It turned out everyone knew. Xu Shijiu knew, Xu Manyue knew… everyone involved in that accident knew. She was the only one kept in the dark.
“If she wasn’t at fault… then whose fault was it?” The soft question carried the weight of Liu Lingyan’s stance.
Xu Shijiu didn’t dare look up, afraid of seeing the resentment in her sister-in-law’s eyes. Seeing Xu Shijiu’s immobile legs, the fire in Liu Lingyan’s heart eventually died out. “Go home. I’m going back in to watch Fantuan. Come visit often; she’s happy when she sees you.”
Lin Xinyi had remained silent throughout, piecing together the story from their conversation. Looking at Xu Shijiu’s slumped shoulders, her heart was full of pity. She didn’t understand why there were so many cruel coincidences in this world, or why Xu Shijiu had to carry the weight of these truths.
Holding Xu Shijiu tightly, Lin Xinyi’s voice was firm. “Don’t worry. I’m still here.”
“…You won’t leave me?” Xu Shijiu’s voice was low. Seeing her sister and sister-in-law, who used to be inseparable, end up like this was devastating.
“I won’t leave you,” Lin Xinyi promised.
Perhaps due to the emotional turmoil, Xu Shijiu entered her Alpha rut (heat cycle) a few days later. She was immediately sent to the hospital’s Alpha observation room. She would have to stay for three or four days until her condition stabilized. Without her, the two kittens were listless, and Lin Xinyi kept watch at the door.
“Don’t wait. She won’t be back today.” Xu Manyue returned from work and saw Lin Xinyi.
Because there were many Alphas where Xu Shijiu was staying, both she and Xu Manyue had strictly forbidden Lin Xinyi from visiting for her own safety. Lin Xinyi was frustrated and had been caught trying to sneak in several times.
“Sister, you’re back.” Lin Xinyi went to greet her but immediately frowned at the scent of alcohol. “Why did you drink so much again? You drank just as much yesterday.”
“It’s fine. I’m not drunk.” Xu Manyue dismissed it. If only she could get drunk—then she could temporarily forget these troubles. But no matter how much she drank, she couldn’t lose consciousness.
And Liu Lingyan never appeared in her dreams anymore. She wouldn’t even grant her that.
