You Are My Omega - Chapter 54
Xu Manyue didn’t move to avoid it. Maybe deep down, she had always wished someone would slap her—punish her. That might be the only way her guilt-stricken heart could feel even a sliver of relief.
She was fully prepared to take the slap, but when Liu Lingyan saw Xu Manyue standing still with her eyes shut, not dodging or flinching, her anger surged. Yet, the hand she had raised froze in the air.
Lin Xinyi couldn’t believe what she was seeing. Her sister and sister-in-law had always seemed so close, so loving. What on earth had happened?
Shocked as she was, Lin Xinyi quickly stepped forward and pulled down Liu Lingyan’s hand. She pointed to a nurse who had been standing nearby for some time, too afraid of the bodyguards to approach.
“Sis, Sister-in-law, if you two keep fighting, the nurse is going to come over and ask us to leave.”
Liu Lingyan allowed herself to be led to a chair and sat down. Xu Manyue clenched her fists at her sides. Her lowered gaze was filled with shadows and turmoil. Why hadn’t Liu Lingyan followed through with the slap?
When Xu Shijiu arrived, the tension in the air was almost suffocating. Liu Lingyan sat pale-faced, eyes fixed on the words “In Surgery” above the operating room. Lin Xinyi was at her side, trying to comfort her but clearly unsure of what to say. Xu Manyue stood frozen in place, unmoving.
“Sister… Sister-in-law.” Xu Shijiu wheeled herself forward. Her voice trembled. The three turned toward her and saw her in a disheveled state. Her white shirt was stained with dirt, her loose pants torn at the knees, revealing a deep abrasion on her skin.
“Xu Shijiu! What happened to you?” Lin Xinyi hurried over to check her injury. Up close, she saw that the wound was a bloody mess—it was clear she had taken a hard fall.
Xu Shijiu, more concerned about Fantuan than herself, casually pulled a blanket over her legs and asked anxiously, “Sister, how’s Fantuan? Is she okay?”
“She’s still in surgery. We don’t know anything yet,” Xu Manyue replied, then turned to Lin Xinyi. “Take Xiaojiu to get her knee treated. I’ll stay here.”
“No!” Xu Shijiu immediately objected. Her sister and sister-in-law couldn’t be left alone together right now.
“Take off the blanket,” Lin Xinyi snapped. Without waiting for a response, she pulled it off herself. Xu Shijiu flinched.
“I’m fine. It doesn’t hurt.”
She really couldn’t feel the pain anymore.
“Doesn’t hurt? You’re seriously injured!” Lin Xinyi was furious. What she hated most was seeing Xu Shijiu neglect her own health like this.
“Have someone call a doctor to check on her,” Liu Lingyan said suddenly. Fantuan was still in surgery, and asking Xu Shijiu to leave her post now would be too harsh.
“Okay,” Xu Manyue agreed quickly and turned to give instructions to the bodyguards. She hadn’t expected Liu Lingyan to still care about Xu Shijiu. Did it mean that Liu Lingyan still…
No. Xu Manyue shook her head hard, trying to rid herself of that foolish hope. It was because of her and her family that Liu Lingyan’s life had fallen apart. How could she dare to wish for forgiveness?
Xu Manyue glanced at Xu Shijiu, studying her expression. She wanted to find a clue in her face. Just earlier, her assistant had informed her that the distorted phone call that revealed the truth to Liu Lingyan had come from the school that Xu Shijiu and Lin Xinyi attended.
That lead only pointed to one person—Xu Shijiu.
Xu Manyue didn’t want to believe it, but even disbelief couldn’t stop suspicion from creeping in.
The anonymous person who sent that truth-telling recording still hadn’t been identified. She had no idea who would go to such lengths. Grandfather was closely watched by the butler, making it impossible for him to act. Who else could it be? Who else knew the secret?
Xu Manyue was overwhelmed. These past days had been crisis after crisis. She was nearly at her breaking point.
Fantuan had hit her forehead—a long gash that the doctor said would scar visibly at first but might fade with time. Thankfully, her brain had not been injured. That was the one blessing.
On the hospital bed, little Fantuan lay still. White gauze wrapped around her forehead. Her face was pale, tears still clinging to the corners of her eyes, and her tiny brows were furrowed. It broke everyone’s heart to look at her.
Seeing her daughter in that condition shattered Liu Lingyan completely. Tears streamed down her face.
Xu Manyue wanted so badly to step forward, to hold her, to comfort her, to tell her not to cry. But she couldn’t.
Even the slightest approach would be painful for Liu Lingyan now. Any closeness would be met with resistance.
“Fantuan will be okay, Sister-in-law. Please don’t cry like that.” In the heavy silence, Lin Xinyi finally stepped in. Seeing Xu Manyue holding back and Xu Shijiu staying quiet, she felt she had to say something.
She didn’t know what exactly had happened between them, but it couldn’t go on like this.
Xu Shijiu understood too. After exchanging a look with Lin Xinyi, she took a moment, then finally spoke.
“Sister, Sister-in-law.”
“Hm?” Xu Manyue turned to her. Liu Lingyan hesitated but also looked her way.
“When Fantuan wakes up, she wouldn’t want to see you both like this.”
That was all Xu Shijiu could bring herself to say. Even saying that much was already pushing Liu Lingyan too far. She knew that.
Xu Manyue looked at Liu Lingyan’s back and slowly lowered her head. What right did she have to ask for forgiveness?
Xu Shijiu and Lin Xinyi were later pushed out of the room. Xu Shijiu had believed that, for Fantuan’s sake, her sister-in-law wouldn’t do anything extreme—at least not now. But what they received afterward was…
A divorce agreement. Signed and finalized. In it, Xu Manyue had voluntarily given up custody.
“Sister, what is this?” Xu Shijiu stared at the document in disbelief. Her heart sank. How could this be? Her sister and sister-in-law had loved each other so deeply. Even if there was resentment, how could Sister-in-law choose this moment, of all times, to draft something like this? To sign a divorce?
“It’s a divorce agreement,” Xu Manyue replied. She slumped in her office chair, her face frighteningly pale. Empty bottles of alcohol were scattered around her feet. Her voice was hoarse, but she still wore a smile.
She smiled and smiled, until tears poured down her face.
“Did Sister-in-law bring it up?” Xu Shijiu asked. Seeing her sister in this state made her heart ache. She still couldn’t believe Liu Lingyan would be the one to initiate a divorce.
“No,” Xu Manyue replied.
The answer caught her completely off guard. Xu Shijiu’s eyes widened with a new thought. “You brought it up?”
Xu Manyue paused as she tried to sober up. She turned her head to look at Xu Shijiu and gave a faint smile. “Yes.”
Xu Shijiu was in disbelief. The sudden emotion nearly caused her to fall out of her wheelchair. “What are you doing? Divorce isn’t something you can just bring up like that. Why would you ask for a divorce?”
“She’s not your sister-in-law anymore,” Xu Manyue said quietly.
That hoarse reply instantly extinguished all the anger building in Xu Shijiu’s chest. Her whole body went weak. She stared at Xu Manyue, confused and overwhelmed. “Why would you do that?”
Liu Lingyan hadn’t asked for it, so why did her sister insist on ending the relationship? Besides, Xu Manyue had permanently marked her.
“She’s going to have the mark removed tomorrow,” Xu Manyue said. Her voice was low and rough. She tilted her head back and drank an entire glass of wine. Her eyes were filled with bitterness and sorrow. Once the mark was removed, Liu Lingyan would no longer be her Omega.
At first, Xu Shijiu wanted to argue that a permanent mark couldn’t be erased. But the words stopped in her throat as she remembered the recent announcement from the government. There was now a completely safe procedure that allowed Omegas to remove an Alpha’s lifelong mark. It was expensive and handled by specialized institutions that protected Omegas. The process had no effect on the Omega, but it did cause some side effects for the Alpha.
“You agreed to it?”
“Yes.”
Of course she agreed. Why wouldn’t she? Why should she refuse?
If this continued, she would only bring Liu Lingyan more pain and sorrow. Since Liu Lingyan couldn’t bring herself to do it, then she would do it for her. If Liu Lingyan couldn’t punish her, then she would do it herself.
“You’ve completely lost your mind,” Xu Shijiu said. She turned around without another word and left. She called for Lin Xinyi and returned to the hospital. Fantuan’s injuries hadn’t healed yet. That child was extremely sensitive to adult emotions. She had already sensed something. If she found out what was really happening, she would be devastated.
Xu Shijiu couldn’t agree with her sister’s decision. It was far too cruel for Fantuan. That little girl had always wished for her two mothers to spend more time with her. On the first day she woke up in the hospital, Fantuan whispered something to her.
She said she was glad she got hurt because it meant Mama and Mommy would stay with her.
That simple sentence made Xu Shijiu’s heart ache. Lin Xinyi quietly turned away and wiped tears from her eyes.
They had watched Fantuan grow up day by day. Seeing her now, lying weak and pale in that white hospital bed, was hard enough. But then hearing her say something so innocent and heartbreaking made it even worse.
Back at home, Xu Manyue stood silently at the open doorway. Her tears began to fall again. She couldn’t hold them back anymore. Yes, she thought, she really had gone mad.
She had been mad when she insisted on asking her mother to attend the birthday party.
She had been mad when she chose to get close to Liu Lingyan, even knowing she only brought misfortune to others.
She had been mad when she marked Liu Lingyan, when she married her, when she had a child with her.
She had been mad when she dared to hope for happiness.
How could someone like her ever deserve happiness? She was someone who only brought disaster. She had no right to ask for anything more. From the very beginning, she should never have wished for so much.
Even if it meant never meeting Liu Lingyan, she would have accepted that. As long as Liu Lingyan could live safely and happily. If it hadn’t been for her, Liu Lingyan’s mother and brother wouldn’t have been in that accident. Liu Lingyan’s family would still be whole and joyful.
The same went for her own mother and for Xiaojiu. Everything would have stayed the way it was. But she made one phone call, one moment of urging, and it changed so many lives and altered so many futures.
She really had lost her mind.
