You Are My Omega - Chapter 50
The days of the high school entrance exams had finally come to an end. Only then did Xu Manyue and Liu Lingyan tell Lin Xinyi about the movie audition opportunity. Xu Shijiu already knew, of course. Lin Xinyi was thrilled when she found out. Her first reaction was to look toward Xu Shijiu, expecting her to be just as happy. But what she saw was a blank, emotionless face.
“Xu Shijiu?” Lin Xinyi had thought Xu Shijiu would be excited for her. She hadn’t expected a reaction like this. Her smile froze, and unease crept in. She asked carefully, “You don’t want me to go?”
Xu Shijiu lowered her head so the others wouldn’t see her expression. Her voice was quiet and deep. “It’s not that.”
“Shijiu, I—”
“I’m going back to my room.”
Xu Shijiu suddenly interrupted Lin Xinyi before she could finish. She turned her wheelchair around and left the room quickly. She was afraid of saying something she would regret. In this kind of emotional and unstable state, she feared she might hurt Lin Xinyi with her words.
Lin Xinyi wanted to follow her, but Liu Lingyan stopped her.
“Let Xiao Jiu calm down on her own for a bit,” she said.
In moments like this, it was too easy to say something that couldn’t be taken back. Chasing after her now wouldn’t help anything.
“But Xu Shijiu…” Lin Xinyi didn’t want to give up. She didn’t want to leave Xu Shijiu alone in this state. Xu Shijiu was an Alpha who tended to overthink and lacked a strong sense of security. Who knew what kind of thoughts might fill her mind when she was by herself?
“She probably just doesn’t want you to leave,” Xu Manyue said gently. “She’s used to having you around. If you’re not with her anymore, she’ll feel sad and uneasy.”
Xu Manyue was partly right, but it wasn’t just that. Xu Shijiu was thinking about things much further ahead.
Lin Xinyi was beautiful. Even the most popular actresses in the entertainment industry weren’t as pretty as her. At school, she already had more admirers than she could count. If she appeared on the big screen, surely even more people would fall for her.
Xu Shijiu believed it completely. If Lin Xinyi entered the entertainment world and became an actress, she would definitely become famous. She had that kind of charm, and Xu Entertainment had the resources to make it happen.
But once she became famous, she would have less and less time at home. The time they could spend together would only get shorter. The peaceful and happy life they once shared would slowly become out of reach.
The entertainment industry was full of Alphas, many of them talented and impressive. What if Lin Xinyi met someone better than her? What if she stopped loving her?
Just imagining these possibilities made Xu Shijiu feel like a giant invisible hand was squeezing her heart. The pain was unbearable. She wanted to cry out, but she realized she didn’t even have the strength to ask for help.
There was a knock at the door.
Lin Xinyi had hesitated for a long time but decided not to listen to Liu Lingyan’s advice. Instead of leaving Xu Shijiu alone, she stood in front of the door, raised her hand, and knocked.
“What is it?” Xu Shijiu’s voice came from inside. Because of the door between them, Lin Xinyi couldn’t tell what kind of emotion was behind her words.
“Xu Shijiu, it’s me.” Lin Xinyi spoke gently. She paused, then added, “Can we talk face to face?”
This was supposed to be a day for them to celebrate finishing their exams. She never expected things to turn out like this.
“No need,” Xu Shijiu replied coldly.
“Meow.”
Almost immediately after Xu Shijiu rejected her, the two cats started meowing loudly. They walked over to the door, pawing at it with their claws. Every now and then, they looked back at Xu Shijiu, as if accusing her of shutting Lin Xinyi out. This only made Xu Shijiu’s bad mood worse.
Usually, they were loyal to her, always curled up in her lap, obedient and loving. Only now did Xu Shijiu realize that Hei Tuan and Bai Tuan weren’t truly loyal to her. The person they cared about most was clearly the Omega outside the door, the one who would eventually stop loving her.
“Hei Tuan, Bai Tuan, stop that.” Lin Xinyi heard the cats meowing and worried that Xu Shijiu would get even more upset if she saw them acting like this. She tried to quiet them down in a soft voice.
But her words had the opposite effect. The cats only meowed louder. Xu Shijiu’s anger spiked again. She wheeled herself toward them, her expression dark.
Hei Tuan and Bai Tuan froze when they saw her face. Their bodies stiffened, and they fell completely silent. They huddled together, trembling.
Xu Shijiu looked at them. No matter how angry she was, she couldn’t stay mad at these two adorable troublemakers. She bent down, picked them up, and placed them on her lap. Then she began to rub their fur, completely messing up the smooth coat she had taken so long to groom.
The two beautiful cats immediately puffed up in protest. They wanted to resist, but didn’t dare. All they could do was let out soft, pitiful purring noises.
Outside the door, Lin Xinyi heard the cats purring. It sounded like a mix between enjoyment and protest. Her nervousness eased a little. If Xu Shijiu was still playing with the cats, maybe her mood wasn’t as bad as she had imagined.
In the end, it wasn’t Lin Xinyi’s knocking or her gentle words that opened Xu Shijiu’s door. It was the soft, tearful voice of Fantuan calling, “Auntie… Auntie…” again and again. No one knew who had taught the cat to say that, but each quivering word was like a paw scratching at Xu Shijiu’s heart, making it itch and ache all at once.
Naturally, in the end, it still ended with her giving in, despite locking herself in the room in a rare act of shutting herself away.
In the past, Xu Shijiu used to shut herself in her room all the time. But somehow, over time, she had stopped. Without even realizing it, she had gotten used to having people around her every day. And the person who spent the most time with her each day was Lin Xinyi.
Ever since Xu Shijiu caught up with her studies, she and Lin Xinyi would sit side by side to do homework. They studied independently but tackled difficult problems together. They were evenly matched, and even now, thinking about that made Xu Shijiu feel excited.
In Lin Zhilin’s words, Lin Xinyi wasn’t just the student surpassing the teacher. She was the rising tide meant to push the older wave onto the shore and replace it completely.
“Alright, Fantuan, Auntie is holding you now, so stop crying, okay?” Xu Shijiu looked down helplessly at the little girl clutching her shirt, still sobbing in her arms.
“You lied to me, Auntie!” Fantuan cried and pouted, her soft little fists gently thumping against Xu Shijiu’s chest. “You said you would play with me!”
During the final stretch of exam prep, when Xu Shijiu and Lin Xinyi were focused on studying, Fantuan had been handed over to the care of the housekeeper. Xu Manyue and Liu Lingyan stayed at home to watch over her and kept her from running off to bother the two girls, so they could have quiet time to focus.
Now the exams were finally over, but instead of playing with her, Auntie had locked herself in her room and wouldn’t let her in. She was so upset. What was the point of being a good girl if there was no reward?
“Okay okay, it’s Auntie’s fault. I was wrong. I’ll play with you now, alright?” Xu Shijiu tried her best to coax her, but it clearly wasn’t working. In desperation, she glanced at Lin Xinyi with pleading eyes.
Lin Xinyi had thought Xu Shijiu was still determined to ignore her, so seeing that look made her feel a bit complicated. Honestly, even fighting would have been better than Xu Shijiu’s usual cold shoulder. Thankfully, Fantuan’s meltdown had forced Xu Shijiu to break her silence early.
“I’ll help you, but afterward, we need to have a real talk,” Lin Xinyi said. There was no way she was letting this chance slip by. Who knew when she’d get another opportunity to get Xu Shijiu to open up?
“Alright, I promise.” Though Xu Shijiu was still feeling anxious and upset, Fantuan’s endless crying was driving her to the edge. Without thinking, she agreed immediately.
It was almost as if Hei Tuan and Bai Tuan had understood the conversation. As soon as Xu Shijiu gave in, the black and white cats, both with fur fluffed from being roughly petted, leaned against each other and slowly returned to their nest, grooming each other gently.
As it turned out, Lin Xinyi was far better at comforting children. Fantuan stopped crying quickly. And while being comforted, the girl who hadn’t slept much the night before slowly dozed off in Xu Shijiu’s arms.
“I’ll take Fantuan back to her room. You stay here and wait,” Lin Xinyi said softly as she gently lifted the sleeping girl from Xu Shijiu’s arms. After a few steps, she turned around, looked at Xu Shijiu seriously, and mouthed, “Don’t close the door.”
Xu Shijiu understood. Her hand, which had instinctively reached for the doorknob, froze awkwardly and then withdrew. Fine. If Lin Xinyi hadn’t said that, she would have definitely shut the door the moment her back disappeared from view.
But… Lin Xinyi seemed to know her too well, already predicting her every move. How frustrating. If she was always seen through like this, how would she ever manage to sneak in a moment for herself again?
Lin Xinyi returned quickly. Seeing the door still open, she sighed in relief. She had worried that Xu Shijiu might close it again. Without Fantuan around, there would be no excuse left to knock if Xu Shijiu shut her out once more.
As she stepped back into the room, she was immediately surrounded by two affectionate cats rubbing against her legs. Lin Xinyi crouched down and petted them gently, whispering, “Good kitties. Go on back. I need to talk to your mommy.”
Hearing the word “mommy” made Xu Shijiu shiver. No matter how many times she heard it, she still found it too cheesy and impossible to get used to. But no matter how often she complained, Lin Xinyi never changed what she called her, leaving Xu Shijiu helpless every time.
