You Are My Omega - Chapter 49
Everyone had more or less expected that Riceball would turn out to be an Omega. Still, when the news first came, Liu Lingyan was genuinely surprised, while Xu Manyue wasn’t even slightly shocked. It was as if she had known from the beginning that this would happen.
Liu Lingyan noticed her reaction. After taking a quick look at Riceball, who was fast asleep on the small bed, she gently pulled Xu Manyue by the hand and led her outside. There was a suspicion in her heart that she needed to confirm.
“What’s wrong? Weren’t we supposed to keep an eye on Riceball?” Xu Manyue asked quietly as Liu Lingyan softly closed the door. As soon as they received the news of Riceball’s secondary gender differentiation, both of them had dropped their work and rushed home.
Liu Lingyan nodded, leaned in close to Xu Manyue’s ear, and whispered, “Did you do something to the report?”
Xu Manyue raised an eyebrow. She wasn’t surprised that Liu Lingyan had guessed the truth, but she pretended not to understand. “What are you talking about? What did I do?”
Seeing Xu Manyue act like that, Liu Lingyan knew immediately that she had tampered with the so-called Alpha differentiation report. She gently slapped Xu Manyue on the back of her hand as a light scolding and asked softly, “Why did you do it?”
Why?
Xu Manyue didn’t really have a complicated reason. She had simply wanted Grandpa Xu to stop finding fault with Liu Lingyan. When she decided to fake the report, she already expected that the truth would eventually come out. She never planned to keep it hidden forever. All she wanted was for Liu Lingyan to have a peaceful postpartum period without Grandpa Xu interfering or stirring up trouble.
Grandpa Xu had always been a stubborn traditionalist, someone who valued bloodline above all else and looked down on Omegas while favoring Alphas. If he found out that Riceball was an Omega, who knew how coldly he would treat the child. He might even insist that she and Liu Lingyan have another baby.
Xu Manyue would never let that happen. That’s why she made up her mind from the very beginning.
There was another reason behind her decision too.
The family rules set by Grandpa Xu himself clearly stated that only an Alpha from the main Xu bloodline could inherit the position of family head. An Omega or someone from a side branch could never take that role.
Now that Riceball had been confirmed as an Omega, the only one who could take over the Xu family leadership was Xu Shijiu. There was no other choice. No matter how much Grandpa Xu objected, it was useless. These were his own rules after all.
Grandpa Xu was the last person to find out about Riceball being an Omega. Well, Xu’s father didn’t know either, but Xu Manyue and the others had no intention of telling him.
When Grandpa Xu heard the news, he gave the butler a sharp look and immediately stormed back to his study. He sat down in his chair, growing angrier the more he thought about it. Eventually, he stood up and swept all the documents on his desk to the floor in a fit of rage.
Xu Manyue had done it on purpose. She deliberately handed the Xu family over to some wild child who came out of nowhere, whose background he couldn’t accept.
She even went as far as faking Riceball’s report. Clearly, she wanted to use the false Alpha results to distract him so that he wouldn’t take action against Xu Shijiu.
If Riceball hadn’t differentiated at such a young age, and if the information hadn’t been uncovered by the Xu family’s hidden network that Grandpa Xu had kept in place for years, would Xu Manyue have kept lying to him? Would she have continued playing him for a fool?
Fine. He hadn’t planned to act this quickly, but if he waited any longer, the power within the Xu family might completely shift. Even the position of family head could be taken away from him.
Xu Shijiu and the others knew nothing about what was happening on Grandpa Xu’s side. Every day, they were focused on exam preparation and serious classroom routines. After school, they would be pestered by two clingy cats and Riceball before they could finally settle down and study. Once the cats and the child were satisfied, they could finally get back to their books, with the two fluffy cats staying behind to play with Riceball.
When Lin Xinyi and Xu Shijiu weren’t home, Riceball got along quite well with Blackie and Whitey. Things were peaceful and heartwarming. But the moment either Lin Xinyi or Xu Shijiu appeared, the cats and Riceball would immediately start competing for attention.
Before the entrance exams, both Xu Shijiu and Lin Xinyi had already received numerous admission offers from various schools. Many of them promised full scholarships and hoped the girls would attend. But given the Xu family’s wealth and status, money was never a concern. Naturally, the girls picked the best and most competitive school available.
That said, they chose to stay in the city. Even though Xu Shijiu’s physical rehabilitation had shown great progress, this was still a crucial time for her treatment. It wouldn’t make sense to transfer to a different school now.
Xu Shijiu hadn’t told anyone at home that she was slowly regaining feeling in her legs. She wanted to be able to stand on her own and surprise everyone with the good news.
During the exam period, Xu Manyue and Liu Lingyan both cleared their schedules and stayed home. They made sure to take the girls to their exams on time. Of course, neither Lin Xinyi nor Xu Shijiu gave them any reason to worry. The two women were confident that their children would claim the top two spots in the city.
While sitting in the car waiting for Xu Shijiu and Lin Xinyi to finish their exams, Xu Manyue and Liu Lingyan finally had a quiet moment together.
“Yueyue, did something happen with Grandpa Xu a few days ago?” Liu Lingyan asked with concern. “When I got home, I thought I heard the ladies working in the garden talking about something.”
“Yes, something did happen,” Xu Manyue said calmly. She didn’t plan to hide it. “He tried to cause trouble for Shijiu. But don’t worry. I’ve already taken care of it.”
Ever since Grandpa Xu found out that Riceball was an Omega, Xu Manyue had expected he might try to make a move against Xu Shijiu. So she immediately reassigned a group of trustworthy bodyguards to watch Grandpa Xu’s every move. She gave them strict instructions to report any unusual activity directly to her.
Because of those precautions, none of Grandpa Xu’s plans had worked. The only time he managed to cause even a minor disturbance was a few days ago.
“Did he really go that far?” Liu Lingyan frowned. From the look on Xu Manyue’s face, she could tell those things hadn’t been simple.
“Yes, he did a lot,” Xu Manyue said quietly. Her gaze darkened. “Every underhanded trick he ever taught me, he used against Shijiu. If I hadn’t grown up learning all his methods and if I didn’t understand how he thinks, I might not have been able to protect her.”
“This is unbelievable,” Liu Lingyan said with a sigh. “Shijiu is such a good child. Why does Grandpa Xu resent her so much?”
Xu Manyue gave a cold, sarcastic smile.
“There’s nothing wrong with Shijiu. In fact, she’s outstanding. Grandpa knows that too. He knows how smart she is, how capable. Becoming the head of the Xu family would be easy for her. The only thing he can’t accept is where she comes from.”
“If Shijiu were my mother’s biological daughter and carried the Xu family bloodline, he wouldn’t be acting like this.”
But that was exactly the problem. What Grandpa Xu couldn’t stand the most was Shijiu’s background. And things like birth and bloodline aren’t something a child can choose. It was never Shijiu’s fault.
“He just looks down on her, doesn’t he?” Liu Lingyan frowned. Shijiu was their beloved little sister. Hearing these things made her feel angry and helpless.
“That’s just the way Grandpa is,” Xu Manyue said firmly. “But don’t worry. I’ll protect Shijiu.”
Maybe Grandpa still had some power hidden away when he handed the Xu family over to her. But that didn’t matter. Every trick, every strategy he ever taught her, she had learned well. And now, she would use them all on him.
It was sad, really. If things didn’t have to be so full of mistrust and manipulation, maybe they could have had a normal family relationship. After all, he was her grandfather. If he hadn’t pushed her so far, she never would have thought about using his own methods against him.
Liu Lingyan looked a little more serious and spoke with quiet concern.
“Grandpa hasn’t been looking well, has he? Every time I saw him lately, his face looked pale and weak.”
Her worry wasn’t for Grandpa Xu himself. It was for Xu Manyue. She didn’t want to see her hurt.
It wasn’t that Liu Lingyan was cold or heartless. It was just that Grandpa Xu’s past words and actions had been deeply hurtful. She had no good feelings left toward him. The only thing she feared was that when he was gone, the Alpha who grew up under his care might grieve. After all, no matter how complicated things were, they were still family.
“He’s not as healthy as he used to be,” Xu Manyue said with a nod. “I’ve asked the butler to take him to the hospital for a full check-up, but he always refuses. He insists there’s nothing wrong with him. He doesn’t trust hospitals and thinks those machines will only find problems. It’s the same old attitude from his generation. He avoids science and fears doctors.”
Liu Lingyan noticed the hint of sadness in Xu Manyue’s voice and quickly changed the subject, hoping to cheer her up.
“By the way, Xiaoyi asked me to help her look for acting opportunities. One of my friends in the industry is about to start shooting a school-themed movie. I asked them to save her a spot for an audition.”
Xu Manyue remembered that Xiaoyi had mentioned this before, asking Liu Lingyan to keep an eye out for any chances to act. There hadn’t been any updates until now, so hearing it suddenly caught her by surprise. She took a moment before responding.
“When is the audition? If she passes, when does filming start? Where is the film crew based? And how long will she have to stay on set?”
The questions came out in one breath.
She didn’t think there was anything wrong with Xiaoyi acting. It was just… would Shijiu be okay with it?
What if this role made Xiaoyi popular right away? Knowing her, she would definitely want to keep working and earn money. That would mean accepting more acting jobs. Xiaoyi could probably handle studying and filming at the same time, but it would definitely cut down her time at school. Would Shijiu be able to accept that?
