You Are My Omega - Chapter 46
Xu Shijiu was not a child of the Xu family. She was not Xu Manyue’s biological sister. Yet, this revelation didn’t cause any major disturbance in the household. That was not the outcome Grandpa Xu had hoped for. When he found out through the informants he had planted in the Xu family, his face turned completely dark.
“Sir, are you alright?”
“I’m fine.”
No matter what he truly thought, Grandpa Xu would never express it in front of this so-called butler. After all, this butler had been placed by his granddaughter, clearly to watch over him.
This move by Xu Manyue was ruthless. She left him no room to react. She didn’t even give him a heads-up before acting. It was clear she had learned every one of his tricks, and learned them well.
The most ironic part was that Xu Manyue had used all of those tricks against him.
Was he heartbroken?
Yes.
When Xu Shijiu had her car accident and hurt her leg, Xu Manyue insisted on caring for her. She even forced him to send Xu Shijiu abroad for recovery. That was when he truly felt his heart go cold.
All these years, he had stayed out of Xu Manyue’s business. He never expected that out of all the people she could have chosen to be her Omega, she would pick Liu Lingyan. Liu Lingyan’s family had once been the true victim in that very same accident.
Back then, Grandpa Xu had used the Xu family’s hidden power to cover everything up. He made sure the truth never came to light. Yet now, after everything, Xu Manyue had fallen in love with Liu Lingyan.
Was this karma coming back around?
Grandpa Xu felt bitter. He had watched Xu Manyue grow up. Even though her recent actions had left him disappointed, he knew that if the truth about this situation came out, it would hurt her deeply.
And this truth was something he could neither explain nor bring himself to imagine.
Still, there was something even more urgent than that.
“Old Lin, do you think Yueyue really made up her mind to pass the heir position to Xu Shijiu?” Grandpa Xu asked, clearly trying to test him.
Old Lin shook his head. “Sir, I’m just a servant. How could I possibly know that?”
Grandpa Xu looked disappointed. “I think she’s serious.”
Old Lin could feel the sharp look in Grandpa Xu’s eyes, and the pressure from his Alpha pheromones. But what Grandpa Xu didn’t know was that Old Lin’s body no longer reacted to those pheromones. They had no effect on him anymore.
Still, he had to keep pretending.
Xu Manyue was never someone who spoke irresponsibly about serious matters. If she said it, she meant it. But this was something Grandpa Xu could never allow. No matter what it took, he would do everything in his power to stop it.
Looking back now, keeping a small portion of the Xu family’s hidden power in his own hands had been a smart decision.
He couldn’t bring himself to go against Xu Manyue.
So, Xu Shijiu would have to be the one.
Grandpa Xu thought his plan was well thought out. But Xu Manyue had been even more careful. She placed someone by his side to monitor his every move, leaving him with no safe chance to make contact or carry out his plans.
Just as Liu Lingyan had predicted, by the time they reached the third year of middle school, Xu Shijiu and Lin Xinyi had become the fiercest academic rivals. They didn’t just compete in class assignments like it was a contest. Even at home, they used practice books to challenge each other.
Ever since Xu Shijiu stopped taking tutoring from Lin Xinyi, their study sessions were pushed back by an hour. That extra hour had become their dedicated time to play with the cat.
“Yiya, yiya!”
Now that she could crawl, little Fantuan often made her way to Xu Shijiu’s wheelchair and stretched out her small hands, asking to be picked up.
At that moment, Xu Shijiu was holding a sleepy black kitten in her arms. She looked at Fantuan’s chubby, hopeful little face and sighed with a smile.
“Fantuan, Auntie is holding the kitty. I can’t hold you right now.”
After many times of this same scene, she had figured it out. Fantuan only asked her to hold her when she was holding the cat. Any other time, she would cling to her big sister instead. But as soon as Xu Shijiu had the cat, Fantuan would come over and put on this act.
For such a small child, she was already full of jealousy.
And the truth was, trying to reason with a toddler never worked.
As soon as she was rejected again, Fantuan started crying loudly. She spit out her pacifier and lay on the floor, rolling around with surprising skill. She was clearly throwing a tantrum.
Why wouldn’t Auntie hold her?
Why did she only hold the black cat?
Was she not cute enough?
Did she mean less to Auntie than the cat did?
Fantuan’s loud cries didn’t draw any reaction from Liu Lingyan, who was in the kitchen cooking New Year’s Eve dinner, nor from Xu Manyue, who was helping her. They had both seen this show many times before.
Even the nanny, who was usually in charge of watching Fantuan, simply looked on with a fond smile. She didn’t say a word or make a move to stop her.
At times like this, comforting the little miss would only make her push her luck even further.
Lin Xinyi had just come out of the shower when she heard Fantuan crying. She sighed and gave up on the idea of picking up Baituan, who was already asleep in the cat bed, and followed the sound. As expected, the scene before her was exactly what she had imagined.
Even though she knew this was one of Fantuan’s little tricks, Lin Xinyi couldn’t help but feel a pang of sympathy when she heard her crying. Xu Shijiu didn’t stop Lin Xinyi from picking up Fantuan, allowing her to do so.
By this point, Fantuan’s cries had already weakened. She was just waiting for someone to come give her an excuse to stop, and Lin Xinyi was always the one to offer that excuse.
“Don’t cry, Fantuan. Auntie will take you to see what Mommy and Mami are doing.” After saying this, Lin Xinyi looked at Xu Shijiu. Once Xu Shijiu nodded, she carried Fantuan off to the kitchen.
Xu Shijiu felt sorry too. Lin Xinyi knew that.
After Liu Lingyan had recovered, she returned to work. Xu Manyue also started traveling frequently. Although both of them tried their best to make time for Fantuan, it wasn’t always possible. Most of the time, it was the nanny, Lin Xinyi, and Xu Shijiu who took care of her.
That was exactly why, even when Xu Manyue and Liu Lingyan were home, Fantuan clung to them constantly. But if she saw Xu Shijiu or Lin Xinyi holding a cat, she would insist on being held herself.
She was scared her favorite aunties might start loving the cats more than her.
“Xinyi, the kitchen is full of smoke and oil. You just finished showering. Don’t come in, or you’ll end up having to shower again,” Xu Manyue said quickly when she noticed Lin Xinyi approaching.
“It’s alright. I can shower again later.” Lin Xinyi didn’t mind at all. Fantuan was already reaching out excitedly toward her moms. She couldn’t bear to see that anxious little face look disappointed.
Seeing that her advice didn’t work, Xu Manyue quickly grabbed a lid and covered a scorched dish on the counter. No one could be allowed to see that mess. Liu Lingyan had already been holding back laughter for a while. Xu Manyue was so embarrassed she wanted to escape the kitchen entirely.
“Did you see anything?” Xu Manyue asked cautiously, testing Lin Xinyi. She wasn’t sure if her movement had been fast enough to hide the disaster.
“…” Lin Xinyi paused, her expression puzzled. “See what?”
“Nothing. Don’t worry about it.” Xu Manyue quickly waved her hands. As long as nothing was seen, it was fine. That was the best outcome.
Once Xu Manyue turned her back, Lin Xinyi couldn’t help but smile silently. Alright, she had lied just now. Not only had she seen everything, but she had also witnessed the entire series of awkward movements. She had seen it all, clearly and completely.
Her sneaky little attempt at covering up had been hilarious.
Also, how exactly did someone manage to burn a dish so badly that the original ingredients were unrecognizable? Lin Xinyi was genuinely impressed.
When she met Liu Lingyan’s equally amused gaze, the two of them shared a smile. Fantuan, not understanding what was going on, looked at her mommy, then her aunt, and giggled along, clapping her tiny hands happily.
It was supposed to be a warm and joyful family reunion dinner. But suddenly, an unexpected guest arrived.
“What, am I not welcome here?” Grandpa Xu asked coldly, the moment he laid eyes on Xu Shijiu. His expression turned dark in an instant.
“No,” Xu Shijiu replied stiffly. She held the sleeping black kitten in her arms and began to wheel herself away. Grandpa Xu was dangerous, but to her sister, he was still their grandfather and family. She couldn’t argue with him.
Grandpa Xu let out a snort. “A stranger like you has the nerve to stay here after finding out the truth about your background.”
Xu Shijiu froze.
When Grandpa Xu saw the cat in her arms, his expression turned even darker. “Do you not know that when Yueyue was little, she got scratched by a stray cat and has been afraid of cats ever since? And yet you raise these creatures in the Xu household?”
His words hit Xu Shijiu like a hammer.
“Grandpa!” Xu Manyue stepped in just in time, instinctively placing herself in front of Xu Shijiu. She stood face-to-face with him. “Why are you here?”
“What? Is an old man like me not allowed to come for a family dinner?” Grandpa Xu frowned when he saw Xu Manyue covered in smoke and oil. “What happened to the servants in this house? You’re the head of the family. Why are you cooking?”
“It’s a family reunion dinner. It’s different.”
“You should have left it to the Omega. What’s an Alpha doing in the kitchen?” Grandpa Xu couldn’t help but grumble. To him, seeing the family head in such a messy state was disgraceful. That’s what the Omega in the house was for.
“Grandpa,” Xu Manyue said, frowning in frustration. She noticed the unhealthy color of his lips and held back her anger. “I had some free time, so I helped out.”
“And what’s with the cats? Never mind that you’re afraid of them. Shuer is still so young. Having cats around is unsafe. They carry germs and pose risks.”
Xu Manyue finally lost her patience and her face turned cold. “Grandpa, if you’re here to enjoy a family dinner, then you’re welcome. But if you’re going to talk like this, then don’t blame me for what happens next.”
Grandpa Xu was caught off guard. He paused, then let out a heavy sigh.
“Fine.”
