You Are My Omega - Chapter 35
Regarding Mo Jinlan, Xu Manyue still had a few doubts. But Lin Xinyi spoke with such certainty that if everything she said was true, then expressing gratitude was necessary, and a visit to the hospital was the right thing to do. Even so, Xu Manyue was not going to let Lin Xinyi go there by herself.
She didn’t have the heart to wake Liu Lingyan, so she left a note on the bedside table. After getting dressed, she personally drove Lin Xinyi to the hospital.
Even after they were already in the car and on the road, Lin Xinyi still felt uneasy. She looked over with concern and asked, “Jie, am I troubling you too much by making you do this?”
“It’s not a problem at all,” Xu Manyue replied with a shake of her head. She had heard from Xiaojiu that this Alpha from the Mo family was quite cunning. She suspected that after being rejected, Mo Jinlan might try another approach to win Lin Xinyi over. If that really was her intention, then letting Lin Xinyi go alone would not be safe.
Lin Xinyi was mature, but she was still young. Given her upbringing, she couldn’t easily imagine how deep an Alpha from a powerful family could scheme or what they might try to do.
Xu Manyue had been trained as a family heir from a young age. After following her grandfather through countless social and political situations, she had learned through harsh lessons to always be cautious and never show her real thoughts. Every emotion had to be hidden behind a mask.
“Will Liu-jie be upset if she wakes up and doesn’t see you?” Lin Xinyi asked cautiously. Since becoming pregnant, Liu Lingyan had become much more emotionally dependent on Xu Manyue. Lin Xinyi worried that her mood might be affected if she woke up alone.
Of course she would be upset. If Yanyan woke up and found that Xu Manyue was gone, the disappointment in her eyes would hurt far more than any anger. Xu Manyue didn’t want to see that.
But she didn’t say any of this. Instead, she smiled and said gently, “She won’t be. I left her a note, and it’s still very early. She only just fell asleep again after calming down from a nightmare. We’ll be back soon.”
If she had said more, Lin Xinyi would probably feel even more guilty.
This idea of a quick visit matched what Lin Xinyi had planned all along. Even if Xu Manyue hadn’t said anything, Lin Xinyi had already decided not to stay too long. She didn’t want to risk giving Mo Jinlan the wrong idea.
“By the way, Jie, can I ask you not to tell Xiaojiu about this?” Lin Xinyi asked once more.
“I can keep it to myself, but why?” Xu Manyue asked, even though she already had a good guess. She still wanted to hear Lin Xinyi say it out loud.
“I promised her I wouldn’t visit Mo Jinlan.” Lin Xinyi sighed, clearly feeling conflicted. She had made that promise with full sincerity and never thought she would break it, yet here she was.
“I won’t tell her for now,” Xu Manyue said, emphasizing the words clearly. “Xiaojiu hates being lied to more than anything. You should explain everything to her soon. Tell her what happened and why. She’ll understand.”
Xu Manyue had no intention of telling Xiaojiu herself. Xiaojiu already viewed Mo Jinlan as an enemy. If she found out that Lin Xinyi had broken their promise and gone to visit her, no matter how valid the reason, she would still be upset for quite a while.
Lin Xinyi’s visit to the hospital was something Mo Jinlan had expected.
What she hadn’t expected was that Xu Manyue would come along.
What neither Lin Xinyi nor Xu Manyue had anticipated was that there were no members of the Mo family present in the hospital room. Only a caretaker was there attending to Mo Jinlan.
Originally, Lin Xinyi had planned to arrive early and drop off the fruit without waking her. That way she could avoid a conversation entirely. But that plan did not go as she had hoped.
Mo Jinlan was awake.
During her earlier episode of pheromone overflow, the cause might have been the pain, the poor quality of her suppressant patch, or an early onset of her sensitivity period. After her injuries were treated, she was kept in the hospital’s isolation ward for top-tier Alphas for a long time. Only after doctors confirmed she was stable and no longer a risk was she allowed to leave.
“Xin… Lin classmate, you’re here!” The moment she saw who walked through the door, Mo Jinlan’s lingering sleepiness disappeared completely.
She didn’t know why, but she had a strong feeling Lin Xinyi would come that day. She forced herself to wake up early and had been lying there with her eyes open, waiting like someone guarding a door.
Seeing that Mo Jinlan was awake made Lin Xinyi feel awkward. She forced a polite smile and greeted her. “Mo classmate.”
Mo Jinlan’s excitement was too obvious. Even though Xu Manyue hadn’t yet seen her face, she could clearly hear the joy in her voice from behind Lin Xinyi.
That was not a good sign.
Xu Manyue entered the room and looked calmly at Mo Jinlan, who was frozen in surprise. Her tone was cool and polite. “Hello, Mo Jinlan.”
“Hello…” Mo Jinlan hadn’t expected the head of the Xu family to appear. Although surprised, she quickly adjusted her expression and responded with respect. “Head of the Xu family, it’s truly an honor to meet you.”
Xu Manyue’s brow twitched ever so slightly. Mo Jinlan had responded quickly and appropriately, which showed she was good at adapting. And it was exactly that trait that made Xu Manyue uncomfortable.
If Mo Jinlan had no romantic interest in Lin Xinyi, she might have admired her skill. But since Mo Jinlan clearly did have feelings for her, and those feelings were not simple, her strong abilities only made her more of a threat.
Xiaojiu never admitted that she liked Lin Xinyi. Xu Manyue could not tell whether it was romantic or just a deep emotional reliance. But no matter what it was, Xiaojiu would never want someone she cared about to be taken away.
“Yes,” Xu Manyue responded softly. Her gaze stayed fixed on Mo Jinlan, carefully observing this powerful Alpha.
“This is some fruit I bought for you,” Lin Xinyi said as she handed over the bag. She felt slightly more at ease knowing she wasn’t alone, with Xu Manyue by her side.
“Thank you, Lin classmate.” Mo Jinlan smiled politely. At this moment, she didn’t dare make any careless moves.
The Xu family was no longer as powerful as before, and the Mo family could now rival them. Mo Jinlan had never feared offending Xiaojiu, because she didn’t believe the head of the Xu family would go against the Mo family just for the sake of a disabled Alpha. But the person standing before her now was not Xiaojiu. It was the head of the Xu family herself.
No matter how many calculations she had in her mind, this was the time to keep them in check.
Mo Jinlan understood that very well.
“Where is your family?” Lin Xinyi asked politely.
“They’re all working overseas. The work is important, so they couldn’t come back,” Mo Jinlan replied with a smile. “But my parents did hire a caretaker for me.”
“Oh.” Lin Xinyi hadn’t expected that answer.
“What happened? How did you get injured?” she asked, unable to stop herself. She wasn’t sure whether Mo Jinlan already knew that she had found out the truth.
Xu Manyue didn’t say a word the whole time, but her presence was impossible to ignore. Her gaze, calm on the surface but sharp underneath, stayed locked on Mo Jinlan. It made Mo Jinlan feel as if she were sitting on needles.
Mo Jinlan hesitated for a moment. It was likely that Lin Xinyi already knew.
But she couldn’t show that.
“I was messing around with someone and got hurt by accident,” she said with a practiced smile. The explanation sounded flawless, but to Lin Xinyi and Xu Manyue, who already knew the truth, the flaws were obvious.
And that was exactly what Mo Jinlan wanted.
However, Xu Manyue’s presence made it difficult for her to stay composed. Even if everything she said and did matched the plan she had rehearsed in her mind, she still felt uneasy. She couldn’t shake the fear that Xu Manyue might see through her.
She was sure that Xu Manyue would eventually investigate her.
Mo Jinlan was quietly relieved that her decision to intervene had been spontaneous, leaving almost no traces behind. Even if the Xu family looked into it, they wouldn’t find anything useful.
Mo Jinlan had calculated correctly. Xu Manyue’s investigation found nothing unusual. The information she uncovered matched exactly what Lin Xinyi had been told.
And it was this perfect match, with no flaws or inconsistencies, that made Xu Manyue even more suspicious. If there were no mistakes, then it had likely been staged with care.
She even instructed the bodyguards to keep an eye on Mo Jinlan while on school grounds.
When Lin Xinyi received confirmation from her sister that matched what she had already learned, her feelings of responsibility deepened. Even though she had never asked Mo Jinlan to speak up or defend her, it was still because of her that Mo Jinlan had gotten hurt.
Xiaojiu could clearly see the gradual change in Lin Xinyi’s attitude toward Mo Jinlan. At first, Lin Xinyi had been firm in keeping her distance. But now, that resolve was slowly softening.
Xiaojiu had no idea what had happened.
All she could see was Lin Xinyi slowly getting closer to Mo Jinlan, and it made her heart feel cold and empty.
“Lin Xinyi.”
“Hmm?”
Mo Jinlan had not yet recovered fully from her knee injury, but she still helped carry the stack of math test papers for the whole class to the teacher’s office. As Lin Xinyi stepped out of the office, she heard Xiaojiu call her name.
“What happened between you and Mo Jinlan?” Xiaojiu asked bluntly. Ever since Mo Jinlan returned to school after the injury, Lin Xinyi’s attitude toward her had changed completely. A total one-eighty. And she couldn’t understand why.
Lin Xinyi had promised her.
She had promised not to visit Mo Jinlan.
She had promised not to get close to her.
Lin Xinyi knew how Mo Jinlan felt about her. She knew that spending time together like this would send the wrong signal and make Mo Jinlan think she had a chance.
So why?
Why did she go back on everything?
