You Are My Omega - Chapter 34
“I won’t go.”
These words came from Lin Xinyi. Even after being asked over and over again, her response remained exactly the same. It had not changed, not even slightly.
Her promise was firm and unwavering. But in the end, the one who broke that promise was Lin Xinyi herself.
It was Lin Zhiling who told Lin Xinyi that Mo Jinlan had gotten hurt while standing up for her, speaking on her behalf.
At first, Lin Xinyi didn’t quite believe it. Mo Jinlan had always been the calm and composed type. The idea that she would get into a fight on impulse and end up injured because of it felt completely out of character. Lin Xinyi had her doubts.
She needed proof. She needed to see solid evidence.
Lin Zhiling understood just how cautious Lin Xinyi could be when it came to emotional matters. She already knew about Mo Jinlan’s confession, so before telling Lin Xinyi about the incident, she had expected her to be doubtful. That was why she had only used uncertain words like “maybe” or “probably” when she first brought it up.
As for the so-called evidence, it just so happened that Lin Zhiling actually had some.
After an accident involving Xu Shijiu during the midterms last semester, Xu Manyue had donated a sum of money to the school. It was used to secretly install audio-enabled surveillance cameras in areas where bullying was more likely to occur. With Lin Zhiling’s identity, accessing the surveillance room to investigate was a simple task.
In truth, Lin Zhiling didn’t even need to investigate herself. Mo Jinlan was the heiress of the Mo family and a top-tier Alpha. She had been seriously injured. How could the Mo family possibly ignore that?
After watching the footage and confirming multiple times that it had not been edited, Lin Xinyi finally believed that Mo Jinlan had gotten hurt trying to protect her.
Her heart felt complicated. She didn’t know what to say or how she should feel.
“Lin Xinyi?”
Xu Shijiu gently reached out and tapped the back of Lin Xinyi’s hand, then quickly pulled her hand back.
“Huh? What is it?” Lin Xinyi snapped out of her thoughts and looked at Xu Shijiu.
“What do you mean, ‘what is it’? I’ve already finished the entire test paper.”
Xu Shijiu sounded clearly unhappy. Normally, Lin Xinyi would watch her do each question and correct her mistakes as she went. But today, she had finished the whole thing, and Lin Xinyi had still been completely lost in thought.
Faced with Xu Shijiu’s growing irritation, Lin Xinyi forced herself to refocus. “Sorry, Xu Shijiu. I was just thinking about something.”
“What were you thinking about?” Xu Shijiu asked without thinking. Her eyes were filled with suspicion.
What could possibly distract Lin Xinyi so much that she wasn’t paying attention to her anymore? What matter or person could pull her focus away?
“I… I can’t tell you,” Lin Xinyi said, shaking her head. She didn’t want to answer. She could already imagine Xu Shijiu getting upset if she told her.
Xu Shijiu already had a strange hostility toward Mo Jinlan. Lin Xinyi still didn’t know why. And right now, she hadn’t even decided whether or not she would go see Mo Jinlan. If she did decide to go, knowing that Mo Jinlan had been hurt because of her, how was she supposed to face her?
The whole thing felt too overwhelming. Lin Xinyi didn’t even know how to calm herself down.
“You can’t tell me…” Xu Shijiu’s whole expression dimmed.
It was happening again. Another “I can’t tell you.”
Xu Shijiu could feel a volcano inside her heart ready to erupt.
“Can I tell you later?”
Xu Shijiu didn’t answer right away.
Lin Xinyi had, without a doubt, completely softened Xu Shijiu.
Those simple words were enough to cool the volcano down, leaving only small sparks behind.
“You said the same thing when I asked what you were discussing with Sister Liu,” Xu Shijiu said seriously. She was afraid Lin Xinyi would forget again and act as if she had never said it in the first place.
Until now, Lin Xinyi’s promise to “tell her one day” had never come true.
Because of that, Xu Shijiu could never fully relax, not even when she heard Lin Xinyi make another promise.
Lin Xinyi paused, then looked into Xu Shijiu’s sincere eyes and slowly nodded.
“Alright. I’ll remember.”
She hadn’t realized that Xu Shijiu had remembered her words so clearly. She hadn’t expected her to take a simple verbal promise so seriously.
If Xu Shijiu hadn’t brought it up, Lin Xinyi thought she might have forgotten about it completely.
Back when she had asked Sister Liu to look into those matters, she had never intended to tell Xu Shijiu. The same went for Xu Manyue.
Although, it was very likely that Xu Manyue already knew.
Even though Sister Liu had said that Xu Manyue didn’t continue asking questions or push further about the investigation, Lin Xinyi didn’t believe that for a second.
After all, Xu Manyue was no ordinary person.
She was the CEO of Xu Entertainment, the head of the Xu family, and the heir to a mysterious power passed down for hundreds of years. How could someone like that possibly be as carefree and relaxed as she seemed? Even though her usual behavior didn’t seem like that of a carefully raised successor, her status was undeniable.
Xu Manyue was definitely not as simple as she appeared.
Lin Xinyi was certain of it.
It was very possible that every one of her actions, and even her goals, had been under Xu Manyue’s watch the whole time. The only reason she had been allowed to keep going was that none of it posed any threat.
The next morning, Lin Xinyi got up early and moved quietly, trying to sneak out of the house. Just as she was about to step outside without a sound, a familiar voice called from behind her.
“Where are you going?”
Xu Manyue stood there with her arms crossed, smiling as she looked at Lin Xinyi’s back.
“It’s still so early, Xiaoyi. You’re an Omega. It’s not safe for you to go out alone. If you really have to go, let the driver take you.”
Letting the driver go along was, in essence, just another form of surveillance.
But Lin Xinyi would rather believe that Xu Manyue was simply concerned for her safety. Thinking of it that way made her feel warm inside instead of chilled.
“I’m going to visit a classmate. At the hospital.” Lin Xinyi replied without the slightest hesitation. If her sister were to investigate, Mo Jinlan’s background might end up completely exposed.
“Mo Jinlan is an Alpha. I heard from Zhiling that she got into a fight while standing up for me, and that’s how she got hurt. I wanted to visit her in the hospital, but I promised Xu Shijiu that I wouldn’t. So I’m taking this chance to go see her while no one notices.”
Lin Xinyi spoke honestly, explaining the full story from beginning to end.
“I see…” Xu Manyue looked at Lin Xinyi’s sincere face and suddenly gave a mysterious smile. Lowering her voice, she asked, “Xiao Yi, be honest with me. That Alpha from the Mo family, does she still like you?”
Ever since Liu Lingyan became pregnant, her symptoms had grown more intense as the months progressed.
Just this morning, she suddenly woke up from a nightmare, sweating and crying uncontrollably. Xu Manyue had done everything she could to comfort her and eventually managed to calm her down enough to sleep again. She then got up to prepare some warm water for Liu Lingyan to drink later. That was when she spotted a sneaky little “mouse” tiptoeing toward the door.
Xu Manyue had already suspected that Mo Jinlan liked Lin Xinyi, even before Mo Jinlan confessed. She had confirmed her suspicion through Xu Shijiu and later through Lin Xinyi herself, who had looked visibly shaken when admitting it.
During winter break, she had overheard Lin Xinyi asking Liu Lingyan how to make someone who liked her give up. Liu Lingyan had even gone online to research and had carefully explained all the methods, pretending to be quite knowledgeable.
She had acted as if she were an expert in relationships, even though Xu Manyue was her one and only Alpha.
In short, one was brave enough to teach, and the other was brave enough to believe.
“I tried all the methods Liu-jie taught me, but none of them seemed to work. And now, Mo Jinlan even got hurt because she was trying to defend me.” Lin Xinyi grew more frustrated the more she talked about it.
No matter how she looked at it, it was clear that she owed Mo Jinlan now.
Her father had always told her: if someone helps you, you must repay them.
And this time, that person even got hurt because of her. Lin Xinyi genuinely felt guilty.
“You really don’t need to use the methods your Liu-jie taught you,” Xu Manyue said, trying her best not to laugh.
“Why are you up so early, jie?” Lin Xinyi had thought no one else would be awake.
“Yanyan wasn’t feeling well. She just fell asleep again. I came down to get some warm water ready for her,” Xu Manyue said, lifting the thermos in her hand.
“Is Liu-jie alright?” Lin Xinyi asked with concern. “Should I buy her something sour to help? Is it morning sickness, or something else?”
“It’s not that.” Xu Manyue shook her head. Just thinking about how her beloved Omega had cried like that in her arms made her feel deeply upset. “She had a nightmare.”
Liu Lingyan was a strong-willed Omega. In that sense, she and Lin Xinyi were very much alike.
She was never one to lose composure easily. But today, for the first time, Xu Manyue had seen her so fragile.
Seeing her cry like that made Xu Manyue’s heart ache. No matter how she comforted her, Liu Lingyan’s tears just wouldn’t stop. In the end, Xu Manyue found herself silently crying along.
At that moment, she thought, if it would make her beloved Omega stop hurting, she would be willing to do anything.
What she didn’t know then was that the one who would cause Liu Lingyan the greatest heartbreak in the future… would be her.
It would be her and the Xu family she belonged to.
