You Are My Omega - Chapter 33
After enduring the difficult opening ceremony, Lin Xinyi pushed Xu Shijiu out of the assembly early, just before it ended. They returned to the classroom, hoping to escape from the crowd and let Xu Shijiu calm down in peace.
Lin Xinyi had expected the classroom to be empty, a quiet place where Xu Shijiu could relax. But to her surprise, someone was already inside. And that someone was an Alpha she felt awkward seeing right now and honestly hoped to avoid.
She helped Xu Shijiu into her seat, trying hard to focus and not let Mo Jinlan’s presence bother her. But hearing the faint hissing sounds of discomfort coming from the Alpha, and watching her hunched figure, made it impossible for Lin Xinyi to pretend nothing was wrong.
“Shijiu, stay here and rest for a while, alright?” Lin Xinyi leaned close and whispered gently into her ear.
Xu Shijiu’s mood, which had just begun to settle, suddenly dropped again. She glanced toward the Alpha across the room. Her eyes were filled with caution and unease. Something in her gut told her this situation was not as simple as it looked.
Mo Jinlan had always been a clever Alpha, full of tricks and sharp instincts. Even when they played together as children, all the mischievous ideas and subtle manipulations came from Mo Jinlan. She was not someone to be underestimated.
“Go ahead,” Xu Shijiu said suddenly, catching Lin Xinyi off guard. Lin Xinyi had been worried she would object or ask too many questions.
“I’ll be back soon,” Lin Xinyi reassured her. She gently patted Xu Shijiu’s hand, confident that her conversation with Mo Jinlan would not take long.
Even if Mo Jinlan was unwell, there was not much Lin Xinyi could do. She was an Omega and couldn’t physically support an Alpha. If anything, she would need to find someone else to help.
As she approached Mo Jinlan, she kept a safe distance. She studied the Alpha carefully, but Mo Jinlan’s bent-over position made it difficult to tell what exactly was wrong.
“Are you alright?” she asked.
At the sound of her voice, Mo Jinlan’s eyes brightened. The intense pain in her knees seemed to ease just from hearing Lin Xinyi speak.
“I’m fine,” Mo Jinlan replied, staying completely still. She tried her best to sound normal, as if nothing was wrong at all.
If Mo Jinlan had been honest with her at that moment and told her exactly what was going on, Lin Xinyi would have walked away without getting involved. But this kind of stubbornness made it harder for her to ignore the situation.
“Are you feeling sick?” Lin Xinyi asked, her voice filled with concern. She cast a puzzled glance toward the group of Alphas lingering outside the classroom door. They had been pacing back and forth but had yet to step inside. “Why aren’t they helping you?”
Normally, Mo Jinlan was always surrounded by a few Alphas. It was strange that today, when she clearly needed help, they were standing outside doing nothing.
“I’m fine. As for them…” Mo Jinlan’s voice trailed off. She could not think of a good excuse to explain their absence.
Lin Xinyi frowned. She was not in the mood to wait through vague answers and hesitation. Without another word, she turned to leave.
“Then I’ll go now.”
Mo Jinlan had not expected that. She looked up slowly and watched Lin Xinyi walk away. The pain in her knees felt even sharper in that moment, spreading deeper as her hope faded.
Maybe the pain really had become unbearable, because no matter how strong her self-control was, she could no longer suppress her pheromones from leaking out past her suppressant patch.
Mo Jinlan was a top-tier Alpha. She always used high-grade suppressant patches and had to change them often just to keep her scent contained. But now, she had lost control.
Her pheromones began to spread through the entire classroom.
Lin Xinyi was a top-tier Omega. She immediately picked up the scent. It was floral, soft and heavy at the same time. Mo Jinlan’s pheromones carried the fragrance of blooming flowers.
Xu Shijiu noticed it too, not through smell at first, but from the invisible pressure that filled the air. It was unmistakable Alpha dominance. Only after that did she catch the floral scent.
Without hesitation, Xu Shijiu rolled her wheelchair toward the ventilation system and turned it on, trying to circulate the air and push the pheromones out.
Lin Xinyi’s eyes widened in alarm. She silently thanked the heavens she was not in her heat cycle. If she had been, she might not have been able to stay standing after breathing in that scent.
“Why are your pheromones so unstable?” she asked, her voice shaking slightly. She instinctively began to step back.
“I…” Mo Jinlan was drenched in sweat and barely able to speak. Her body had no strength left.
“Lin Xinyi!”
The shout came from behind, startling her. She turned quickly and saw Xu Shijiu, now right behind her. Without thinking, Lin Xinyi stepped closer to her, seeking the comfort of someone she trusted.
“You turned on the ventilation?” she asked, suddenly aware of the humming fans now working in the classroom.
“Yes,” Xu Shijiu nodded and held tightly to Lin Xinyi’s hand. Even though she was clearly struggling to breathe under the Alpha pressure, she still tried to pull Lin Xinyi back, away from Mo Jinlan.
“What’s wrong with you?” Lin Xinyi noticed her pale face and labored breathing immediately. She held her hand tighter and asked anxiously.
“It’s just… I can’t handle the pressure of a top-tier Alpha’s pheromones.” Xu Shijiu hesitated but answered honestly. Admitting this as an Alpha was embarrassing. But when she saw the concern in Lin Xinyi’s eyes, she swallowed her pride and told the truth.
“Then let me get you out of here!” Lin Xinyi said urgently. Her attention was completely focused on Xu Shijiu. She did not even glance back at Mo Jinlan, whose condition at this point was clearly worse. Nor did she notice the cold and bitter look Mo Jinlan now directed at Xu Shijiu.
Xu Shijiu’s body could not handle any kind of stress. Lin Xinyi had heard Xu Manyue repeat this warning so many times.
Once she pushed Xu Shijiu safely out of the classroom, a loud thud echoed behind them. It was the sound of someone collapsing. Only then did Lin Xinyi remember that Mo Jinlan had been acting strangely from the beginning.
“Aren’t you going to check on her?” she snapped at the Alphas still standing outside the classroom door. “Why are you just standing there? You’re not Omegas!”
Mo Jinlan had already collapsed on the floor. Even though Lin Xinyi had been keeping her distance emotionally, in this moment, who could truly harden their heart and walk away?
If it weren’t for the intense Alpha pheromones that had put her on alert, Lin Xinyi might have rushed straight into the classroom to help.
Mo Jinlan’s condition was clearly serious.
When the school nurse finally arrived with a stretcher, they replaced her suppressant patch and waited until the pheromones had dispersed. Then, along with the other Alphas, they lifted Mo Jinlan and carried her to the infirmary.
Neither Lin Xinyi nor Xu Shijiu followed.
“What happened to her?” Xu Shijiu asked curiously.
“It looked like a knee injury…” Lin Xinyi murmured. When the medical staff passed by, she had gotten a close look. Xu Shijiu hadn’t seen the wound, but Lin Xinyi had seen it very clearly.
Was it a knife wound?
She wasn’t entirely sure, but it had been a terrifying sight. A long, deep gash stretched from above Mo Jinlan’s knee to below it, raw and bleeding. The muscle was visible beneath the torn skin.
Lin Xinyi didn’t know how Mo Jinlan had endured it for so long. No wonder she had seemed so strange back in the classroom. It turned out she had been hurt all along.
Why had she hidden it? Why didn’t she let anyone help? She should have gone to the infirmary right away instead of tying a towel around the injury and forcing herself to push through the pain.
Thankfully, the wound hadn’t exposed the bone. Hopefully, it wasn’t too deep.
Xu Shijiu noticed that Lin Xinyi seemed lost in thought. Her expression tightened. She knew exactly who Lin Xinyi was thinking about, and that made her heart uneasy.
Lin Xinyi was still deep in thought when she felt a small tug at the hem of her uniform. She looked down in surprise.
“What is it?” she asked gently.
“Are you going to check on Mo Jinlan?” Xu Shijiu asked in a quiet voice. Though her tone was light, her eyes, half-hidden beneath her bangs, were dark and clouded.
She didn’t want to hear Lin Xinyi say yes. She didn’t want her to care about any other Alpha. Not anyone except her.
“No. I won’t go,” Lin Xinyi said firmly.
“Really?” Xu Shijiu immediately brightened, but she still wanted to be sure.
“I won’t go,” Lin Xinyi repeated without hesitation. She did not understand how Mo Jinlan had ended up with an injury that serious, and yes, she was a little curious. But it had nothing to do with her. Mo Jinlan’s injury was not her responsibility.
Besides, if she went to visit, she knew it would only lead to more misunderstandings.
“You promised. You’re not allowed to change your mind,” Xu Shijiu said, satisfied with the answer.
“Be quiet. The teacher’s here.” Before Xu Shijiu could say anything else, Lin Xinyi cut her off quickly.
Xu Shijiu had been about to ask for another promise, but at Lin Xinyi’s warning, she quietly closed her mouth. As the teacher’s gaze swept the room, she quickly opened her textbook under Lin Xinyi’s reminder and tried to appear calm.
The teacher had noticed their little interaction but only glanced at them briefly and said nothing.
The Xu family was not someone ordinary teachers dared to cross.
