You Are My Omega - Chapter 32
Mo Jinlan had never forgotten the outcome of the confession she had worked so hard to make.
She never believed that Lin Xinyi was obligated to choose her or accept her feelings. Lin Xinyi was simply too exceptional. Among all their peers, she was the one who stood out the most. She had always been praised by elders and sought after by teachers. Even someone like Mo Jinlan, who had always been ranked first, was outshined by Lin Xinyi.
Ever since she met her, things began to change. No matter how hard she worked, how much effort she put in, she was always ranked just behind Lin Xinyi. Always second place. The only small comfort she had was that Lin Xinyi would occasionally ask her for help with math.
Even if she was only ahead in one subject, Mo Jinlan still felt that was a rare and valuable thing.
Lin Xinyi was so intelligent, so gentle, and such a remarkable top-tier Omega. It was hard to believe she had ended up tied to the Xu family, tied to Xu Shijiu, an Alpha who couldn’t even stand on her own.
To Mo Jinlan, it felt deeply unfair.
Lin Xinyi deserved a better future. Even if that future wasn’t with her, it should have been with someone far better than Xu Shijiu. Not someone who couldn’t even walk, someone who needed to be taken care of all the time.
Omegas were delicate by nature, and Lin Xinyi was no exception.
Even though she surpassed Mo Jinlan academically, she was just like any other Omega when it came to physical strength. She needed support and care. And Xu Shijiu could not provide that. She couldn’t even manage something as simple as looking after Lin Xinyi.
An Alpha like that did not deserve someone like her.
Mo Jinlan stood there, her gaze fixed on Xu Shijiu. Her expression was unreadable, and her thoughts unclear, but she seemed completely focused. Xu Shijiu didn’t even notice Lin Xinyi approaching.
“Mo Jinlan.” Lin Xinyi called her name as she walked over. She still remembered the moment Mo Jinlan had confessed her feelings. It was a little awkward to think about, but she was now here as the class representative, collecting Chinese assignments. Personal feelings had no place in this situation.
Because that memory still lingered in her mind, Lin Xinyi didn’t notice where Mo Jinlan was looking. She didn’t realize that her gaze had been fixed on Xu Shijiu the entire time, or that there was something dark and unsettling in her eyes. That was something Lin Xinyi would later regret deeply.
If she had only been a little more observant in that moment, then perhaps what happened afterward could have been prevented.
“Xinyi!” Mo Jinlan snapped out of her thoughts and looked at Lin Xinyi with joy. Her entire face lit up with excitement.
A few of Mo Jinlan’s usual followers saw her expression and were stunned. They were used to seeing their leader with a cold, confident face. Seeing her look so openly happy was almost shocking.
But after exchanging glances with each other, they quickly accepted it. When it came to Lin Xinyi, their leader had always been different. She acted one way around them and another when facing this top-tier Omega.
Lin Xinyi saw the delight on Mo Jinlan’s face and instinctively took half a step back to maintain distance.
She had thought that after the winter break, Mo Jinlan would have moved on. But it seemed she hadn’t.
The expression on her face made it clear.
She still liked her.
Realizing that, Lin Xinyi felt her heart sink.
She didn’t understand why someone like Mo Jinlan would fall for her. In Lin Xinyi’s eyes, Mo Jinlan was a very capable Alpha. She was confident, intelligent, and, unlike many others, did not hold outdated views about Omegas. Someone like that shouldn’t have fallen for her.
But the truth was clear. Mo Jinlan did like her.
Lin Xinyi couldn’t help but think. If her father were still alive, if nothing had changed, and she had met an Alpha like Mo Jinlan in such circumstances, it would have been hard not to be moved. After all, Mo Jinlan was the kind of person many dreamed of being with.
But now, she felt nothing. She would not allow herself to develop feelings, and she would not give Mo Jinlan any chance.
She was Xu Shijiu’s Omega, her fiancée. She already had her Alpha.
That thought was firm in Lin Xinyi’s heart and never wavered.
The smile on Mo Jinlan’s face froze the moment she noticed Lin Xinyi stepping away. After a brief pause, she forced a small smile and said with strained cheerfulness, “I’m sorry, Xinyi. I didn’t mean to overstep.”
Her voice was sincere. Lin Xinyi couldn’t help but wonder if her reaction had been too much.
Although Mo Jinlan had once confessed to her, she had never done anything inappropriate before or after. She had always kept her distance and had never made Lin Xinyi feel uncomfortable. In fact, she had stood up for her more than once. When others had gossiped behind her back, Mo Jinlan had been one of the few who defended her.
Because of that, Lin Xinyi had always struggled to keep a clear boundary between them.
During the winter break, she had thought about how to handle the situation. She wondered what she would do if Mo Jinlan still had feelings for her. She thought about how she could reject her gently, in a way that would help her let go on her own.
She thought about it often, even losing sleep over it. But no matter how much she thought, she never came up with a clear answer.
“It’s alright. I’m here to collect the Chinese assignments,” Lin Xinyi said with a polite smile. She didn’t step forward, but she didn’t move back either. She stayed where she was, her expression calm and slightly distant.
Although Lin Xinyi truly did not want to hurt Mo Jinlan, she knew that dragging things out would only cause more pain in the long run. Mo Jinlan was bound to get hurt if things continued like this, so it was better to be decisive and handle it clearly. She had to be firm and direct.
“Alright,” Mo Jinlan said quietly. She quickly hid the sadness on her face. She did not want to make things harder for Lin Xinyi, so she handed over her assignment without saying anything else. Even after Lin Xinyi walked away, Mo Jinlan stood still for a while, staring after her. Then, her gaze slowly returned to Xu Shijiu.
Lin Xinyi had acknowledged her role as Xu Shijiu’s fiancée, but what about Xu Shijiu? To Xu Shijiu, what was Lin Xinyi’s place in her life?
When they were children, Xu Shijiu had been a confident and radiant Alpha. Back then, Mo Jinlan had always felt that she could not compete with her. Xu Shijiu had been the kind of person who lit up any room. Mo Jinlan was sure she never would have stood a chance.
But now, things had changed. Xu Shijiu was no longer the person she had been. Her personality was different, and so was her body.
The current Xu Shijiu had nothing left that could surpass her.
To Mo Jinlan, she had become someone who needed to be taken care of at every turn.
A plan started to form in Mo Jinlan’s mind.
Her family often told her that if you truly want something, you should do everything within reason and law to get it. Mo Jinlan believed now was the time to put that belief into action.
During the opening ceremony, Lin Xinyi stayed beside Xu Shijiu the entire time. She did not leave her side, not even for a moment. She kept a close eye on Xu Shijiu, carefully observing her condition. When she noticed that Xu Shijiu’s lips had turned pale, her heart tightened with worry, like a needle piercing through.
“Are you really alright?”
“Yes,” Xu Shijiu replied with a quiet nod.
She didn’t say anything more. At that moment, she could not find the strength to speak. All the eyes staring at her made her feel suffocated, like the air around her was slowly being drained away.
She wanted to run.
She wanted to escape to a place where no one could find her. It did not matter if it was a smelly restroom or a small grove full of insects. Any quiet place, any space where she could be alone, would have been better than standing there under everyone’s eyes.
But then she looked up.
She met Lin Xinyi’s eyes, and in that moment, she saw genuine care and concern. From that single look, Xu Shijiu found unexpected strength. It gave her the courage to hold on and stopped her from running away.
“Can you still hold on?” Lin Xinyi asked softly.
She wished she could shield Xu Shijiu from all the attention. She wanted to make those judgmental eyes disappear. But she could not. All she could do was try to comfort her and stay close, to let Xu Shijiu know that she was not alone.
“I can do it,” Xu Shijiu replied. She forced a weak smile, though her face was pale.
Her hands were tightly clenched. She remembered Lin Xinyi’s warning not to bite her lips and tried her best to resist the urge.
She kept telling herself not to care. But how could she truly not care?
Her legs were injured. She could not stand. And all those eyes, filled with pity or scorn, she could feel every one of them.
Lin Xinyi understood how it felt to be the center of unwanted attention. She had experienced judgment and ridicule too.
Her identity had always attracted attention. While many admired her, there were always a few who disliked her. Since entering the school, she had endured more than a few cold stares and whispered insults. But for her, those moments were rare, and she had learned to ignore them.
For Xu Shijiu, it was different.
There were far too many Alphas who looked down on her. Too many who wanted to take advantage of her weakness and bully her when no one was watching.
Lin Xinyi could imagine very clearly that if Xu Shijiu did not have the protection of the Xu family or the support of Xu Manyue, someone in her condition would have already been hurt many times by now.
