You Are My Omega - Chapter 31
Xu Shijiu barely managed to finish her winter homework the day before school started. As the return to school drew closer, she felt lazier by the day. At one point, she even thought about giving up completely and not turning anything in.
She got so frustrated that she told Lin Xinyi she was done with it and had no intention of finishing.
But the next day, when she saw Lin Xinyi carefully going through her thick stack of math worksheets, pointing out every mistake, even small typos, Xu Shijiu couldn’t help but feel moved. Lin Xinyi had clearly spent a lot of time reviewing the work in detail, correcting every little error one by one.
Lin Xinyi had taken it seriously, which made it impossible for Xu Shijiu to just walk away from it. Even though Lin Xinyi never pressured her, Xu Shijiu couldn’t bring herself to ignore the effort. Her own sense of guilt would not allow it.
Most of the teachers had assigned a heavy load of homework over the break, so naturally some students didn’t finish. A few begged the class monitors to collect their work a bit later, hoping to buy more time. Others didn’t even bother pretending and handed in blank pages without a second thought.
This wasn’t unusual in a school full of wealthy students with strong family backgrounds. The teachers often didn’t dare to punish them. With no pressure from parents, those students did whatever they pleased and no one could say anything about it.
Lin Zhiling had assumed Xu Shijiu would be one of those students. But when she came around to collect the English assignments and saw Xu Shijiu’s desk already neatly stacked with completed work from every subject, her opinion changed completely.
Last semester, just before finals, Xu Shijiu had suddenly started working hard. At the time, Lin Zhiling found it odd. She thought Xu Shijiu would give up again after a few days. But the truth proved her wrong.
Xu Shijiu had even finished all of her summer homework seriously and thoroughly.
Lin Zhiling stood by Xu Shijiu’s desk for a while, clearly surprised. Her lingering presence caught the attention of Lin Xinyi, who was standing on the far side of the classroom. Lin Xinyi frowned immediately, put her assignment on the teacher’s desk, and walked toward them.
Xu Shijiu had her head down, secretly playing with her phone, completely unaware of what was happening.
It wasn’t until she heard Lin Xinyi’s calm voice asking, “What’s going on?” that she looked up. When she saw both Lin Xinyi and Lin Zhiling standing at her desk, she looked confused.
“This is Xu Shijiu’s assignment. You took the wrong one,” Lin Xinyi said as she gently took the notebook from Lin Zhiling’s hands and replaced it with the correct one. Her eyes were filled with caution as she looked at Lin Zhiling.
There was a quiet defensiveness in her expression. She didn’t even realize it herself, but her eyes held a subtle hostility toward Lin Zhiling.
Lin Xinyi may not have noticed her own reaction, but Lin Zhiling definitely did.
“What happened?” Xu Shijiu asked Lin Xinyi instinctively. Her voice was soft, filled with trust and reliance.
“Nothing serious. Just take a moment to rest. You’ll need to attend the opening ceremony soon,” Lin Xinyi replied with a gentle voice. The intensity that had been in her eyes moments earlier vanished as she looked at Xu Shijiu. Her expression was calm and full of warmth.
“Alright,” Xu Shijiu nodded and didn’t question it further.
She simply treated Lin Zhiling as if she were invisible.
Watching the way they interacted, Lin Zhiling couldn’t help but feel something was off. The more she observed, the more she felt that her earlier suspicions were not only reasonable but likely correct, despite Lin Xinyi’s earlier denial.
People are often drawn to the unknown. Mysterious individuals tend to attract attention, and Xu Shijiu was exactly that kind of person to Lin Xinyi.
At first, maybe Lin Zhiling had been slightly curious in a way that went beyond simple interest. But now, after seeing Lin Xinyi’s attitude, she understood clearly.
Lin Xinyi had a strong possessiveness when it came to Xu Shijiu. Even if neither of them realized it, it was obvious to Lin Zhiling. And Xu Shijiu’s behavior was also very different when it came to Lin Xinyi. She treated her in a way she didn’t treat anyone else.
Back during the midterms, Xu Shijiu had even gotten into a fight because someone had insulted Lin Xinyi.
Normally, Alphas and Omegas treated each other according to the roles society expected. But in their case, both of them seemed unaware of how much they cared about each other and how special their bond really was.
“I didn’t mean anything by it,” Lin Zhiling quickly explained to Lin Xinyi. “I was just surprised that she actually finished all of her winter homework.”
She didn’t dare say anything else. Under Lin Xinyi’s intense gaze, she knew it was better to be honest.
Lin Xinyi was usually gentle and composed, rarely showing any temper. But when something involved Xu Shijiu, she changed completely.
“It had better be just that,” Lin Xinyi said softly as she finally looked away. Once she saw Lin Zhiling leave, she relaxed and went back to her own work.
After realizing what she had just said and done, Lin Xinyi pressed a hand to her chest in confusion.
She had no idea why she had said something so ambiguous to Lin Zhiling, and even less understanding of the strange emotions that had risen within her when she saw Lin Zhiling approach Xu Shijiu. She could not explain where those feelings came from or what they meant.
“Xinyi, are you feeling unwell?” Xu Shijiu noticed Lin Xinyi clutching her chest and instinctively gripped the hem of her shirt. Her voice was soft and filled with concern.
Lin Xinyi slowly lowered her hand and shook her head.
“I’m fine.”
“Are you really alright?” Xu Shijiu still looked worried.
“I am. Truly,” Lin Xinyi nodded firmly. She did feel fine, even if the earlier sensation in her chest had been strange and hard to describe.
“The opening ceremony is starting soon. Will you be okay to attend?” Lin Xinyi looked directly into Xu Shijiu’s eyes and asked again, her voice full of seriousness.
Although she wanted to see Xu Shijiu attend and face the opening ceremony, she didn’t want her to force herself. Lin Xinyi would never want her to push beyond her limits, not to the point where it would cause distress. If it came to that, it would be better not to go at all.
Just the mention of the ceremony made Xu Shijiu nervous. Her heart started to beat faster with unease.
“If you feel you can’t do it, it’s alright to stay in the classroom,” Lin Xinyi said gently. “Don’t force yourself too much.”
This might have been the first time she said something that directly contradicted what her sister had told Xu Shijiu.
Before leaving, Xu Manyue had clearly reminded her to attend the opening ceremony. She believed it was important training to strengthen Xu Shijiu’s endurance. But Lin Xinyi’s approach was the opposite. She believed that pushing too hard would only make things worse.
Everything should be done in moderation. If they wanted Xu Shijiu to truly improve, it would not happen in a day or two. It would take time and steady effort.
Lin Xinyi understood this deeply. After all, her father had repeated these lessons to her since she was a child. She had matured early and gradually learned the meaning behind his words and the expectations they carried.
“I want to try,” Xu Shijiu finally said. Her voice was calm but firm, her gaze steady.
“Alright. But if at any moment you feel like you can’t continue, you must tell me. Do you understand?” Lin Xinyi said seriously. She even reached out and gently tapped Xu Shijiu’s lips, her face stern. “And stop biting your lip. Understand?”
Xu Shijiu sighed. Lin Xinyi sounded like she was talking to a kindergartener. Her tone was exactly like someone speaking to a small child. But with Lin Xinyi looking so serious, Xu Shijiu could only respond with a reluctant, “I understand.”
“Really?” Lin Xinyi could tell she wasn’t very willing.
“I understand,” Xu Shijiu repeated, then muttered under her breath, “I’m not a child anymore.”
Lin Xinyi didn’t reply. She pretended not to hear that part.
Sitting in front of them, Lin Zhiling listened to their back-and-forth exchange. Each line between them sounded so sweet, as if dipped in honey. Just hearing them speak to each other made her feel full, even though she hadn’t had breakfast yet.
After just one winter break, their relationship seemed to have grown much closer.
Lin Zhiling had originally thought that since Lin Xinyi was staying at the Xu home, she might not be able to accept Xu Shijiu. But clearly, she had been wrong. The way these two acted around each other left no doubt. Whatever feelings they had were beyond anything she had imagined.
Their bond had only deepened, and Lin Zhiling was strangely happy to see it. Listening in on their conversations each day had become an amusing little habit. Watching them argue and tease each other was genuinely entertaining.
People often say that this age is when you start dreaming about love. But for Lin Zhiling, it wasn’t her own love story she imagined. Instead, she found herself fascinated by the connection between Lin Xinyi and Xu Shijiu.
Meanwhile, Mo Jinlan stood nearby, watching the way Lin Xinyi and Xu Shijiu interacted so naturally and intimately. She felt like her entire chest had been filled with stones. The weight made it hard to breathe.
She was a top-tier Alpha. Lin Xinyi was a top-tier Omega. By every standard, they should have been a perfect match.
So why was Lin Xinyi only focused on that Alpha who couldn’t even walk without a wheelchair?
Why?
Was she really being compared to someone who had lost the ability to walk?
Was she truly being replaced by someone so broken?
