You Are My Omega - Chapter 29
After witnessing Xu Manyue’s cold and stern demeanor during the meeting, like an icy and commanding boss, both Xu Shijiu and Lin Xinyi were left speechless in shock. Liu Lingyan looked at the two of them leaning close to the surveillance monitor and chuckled softly. She waved her hand and gently reminded them, “Don’t lean in so close. You might hurt your eyes.”
“Oh, okay, sister-in-law.” Xu Shijiu immediately obeyed and moved back from the screen without needing further instruction.
“Sister-in-law?” Liu Lingyan was surprised by the title that slipped so naturally from Xu Shijiu’s mouth. She looked at her in disbelief but with joy in her eyes.
Xu Shijiu had always been unusually attached to Xu Manyue. Because of that, Liu Lingyan had assumed her appearance, especially with a child involved, would be hard for Xu Shijiu to accept. Ever since Liu Lingyan learned about the Xu family’s situation, she had never hoped for easy acceptance from Xu Shijiu.
To be honest, during her first visit to the Xu family, Liu Lingyan had mentally prepared herself for hostility. Xu Manyue had described her younger sister as having a difficult personality. Liu Lingyan had imagined that she would be treated poorly. But to her surprise, although Xu Shijiu had not accepted her at the time, she had not made things difficult either.
Seeing Liu Lingyan’s look of surprise and happiness, Xu Shijiu suddenly felt her cheeks flush. After hesitating for a moment, she quietly said, “Yes, you’re my sister-in-law.”
“You’ve accepted me?” Liu Lingyan asked seriously. She did not treat Xu Shijiu like a child but more like an equal. She gave her full respect.
“Yes.” Xu Shijiu nodded firmly.
She had already accepted her. In fact, she had accepted her from the very beginning, even before meeting her. Xu Shijiu had trusted her sister’s judgment completely. Her sister would never choose the wrong person or misjudge someone.
It was only that, emotionally, she had not been ready to face it before.
“That’s wonderful.” Liu Lingyan looked at Xu Shijiu’s serious expression and couldn’t help but smile. As she smiled, a soft mist formed in her eyes.
Xu Shijiu always reminded Liu Lingyan of her own younger brother, an alpha who had passed away in a car accident.
If he were still alive, he would have been about the same age as Xu Shijiu.
If he had survived the accident, he might have needed a wheelchair too, just like her.
That was why, whenever Liu Lingyan looked at Xu Shijiu, her heart softened.
Being accepted by Xu Shijiu, being acknowledged by her, brought Liu Lingyan true happiness and joy.
Xu Shijiu had not expected her simple acceptance to move her sister-in-law so deeply. Seeing Liu Lingyan about to cry, she quickly maneuvered her wheelchair closer and anxiously said, “Sister-in-law, please don’t cry.”
“I’m not crying.” Liu Lingyan shook her head and quickly composed herself. She looked at Xu Shijiu’s worried face and smiled gently.
Xu Shijiu stared at her in surprise. Just moments ago, Liu Lingyan’s eyes had been full of tears, and now she looked completely calm again. Was this what it meant to be a professional actress?
Although she had seen behind-the-scenes footage of Liu Lingyan acting before, where she could instantly switch in and out of character, it still amazed her. Seeing it in person now left her even more stunned.
“Liu Jie, Shijiu, have some water. It’s the perfect temperature.” Lin Xinyi brought over two plastic cups filled with warm water and placed them in front of them.
“Thank you, Xinyi.” Liu Lingyan smiled and turned to her. “About that thing you asked me to look into, I’ve found the answer.”
“Let’s talk about it privately later.” Lin Xinyi’s eyes briefly lit up, but she quickly controlled her expression and nodded.
Liu Lingyan nodded in understanding and didn’t bring it up again. It seemed that Xu Shijiu had no idea what Lin Xinyi had asked about. That much was clear from the confusion in her eyes.
Since Liu Lingyan stayed quiet, Xu Shijiu didn’t press her either. She tugged at Lin Xinyi’s sleeve and waited for her to lean in. Then she whispered, “What were you and sister-in-law talking about?”
Wasn’t Lin Xinyi always focused only on studying? Why would she be involved with sister-in-law in any way? From the way sister-in-law talked, the two of them seemed quite familiar. Clearly, they had been talking often.
Lin Xinyi looked at Xu Shijiu’s intense and expectant gaze. After hesitating for a while, she finally shook her head and replied seriously, “It’s personal. I don’t want to talk about it.”
Xu Shijiu was rejected. She didn’t ask again, probably knowing that no matter how she asked, Lin Xinyi would not tell her. Still, the rejection left her frustrated. Why couldn’t Lin Xinyi tell her? What was so secret that she had to keep it from her?
“Sister-in-law, when do you two plan to get married?”
Xu Manyue had just returned to the office after finishing her meeting when she heard Xu Shijiu’s sudden question. She froze in place, instinctively holding her breath.
The office was arranged so that the desks and sofas were placed farther in, with a layout that made the entrance invisible from the seating area. Because of that, the others had no idea the meeting had ended and that Xu Manyue was already back.
Her heartbeat pounded so loudly she could hear it herself. She did not know what Liu Lingyan thought about marriage. She had no idea whether Liu Lingyan wanted to marry her or not.
Her feelings were conflicted.
Part of her wished Liu Lingyan would agree. That way, they would be legally married and protected. They would become true family in every sense.
But at the same time, Xu Manyue hesitated. She was afraid. She was full of doubt.
She had always seen herself as someone unlucky.
Someone who brought misfortune to others.
She was afraid that she would continue to hurt the people she cared about. That she would bring pain into someone else’s life.
She didn’t want that to happen again.
“Marriage…” Liu Lingyan’s hands paused for a moment. When Xu Shijiu mentioned it, her mind suddenly went blank. In that brief moment of confusion, she saw a vivid image of the day Xu Manyue had proposed to her.
That night, Xu Manyue had to attend a business dinner and ended up drinking a lot. She held herself together until the event was over and the contract was signed. Only after she got into the familiar car did she finally let her guard down. Since it was already late by then, she asked the driver to take her directly to Liu Lingyan’s home.
As the saying goes, alcohol gives courage to the timid.
That night, Xu Manyue finally did what she had never dared to do, using the excuse of being drunk and driven by impulse.
She knelt down on one knee in front of Liu Lingyan and began slurring out a string of unclear sentences. Liu Lingyan could only sigh in helplessness. She tried hard to understand what Xu Manyue was saying, but in the end, she couldn’t make out any of it.
People say that when an Alpha proposes, their words are deeply moving, heartfelt, and emotional enough to bring an Omega to tears. Liu Lingyan didn’t feel moved at all. On the contrary, it was Xu Manyue who ended up crying while speaking, as if she had moved herself.
“Right, marriage. When are you two planning to get married?” Xu Shijiu couldn’t help but ask again when she noticed Liu Lingyan had gone silent, bringing her back from her thoughts.
She had shown the same silence when this question was asked to her sister earlier. Now Liu Lingyan was reacting in exactly the same way. Maybe it was true what people said.
They really were made for each other.
“Whenever Yueyue wants to get married, that’s when we’ll get married,” Liu Lingyan replied without hesitation.
She still clearly remembered that day. After being rejected, Xu Manyue had looked so heartbroken and dejected. Back then, Liu Lingyan had not yet established herself in the entertainment industry. She had no major roles, no fame. If she had gotten married at that point, it would have dealt a blow to her career.
But things were different now.
The public recognized her acting skills. She had standout performances and a rising career. She no longer had to be overly cautious or worry about all those concerns she once had.
“I see…” Xu Shijiu felt that Liu Lingyan’s answer was both expected and surprising at the same time.
Lin Xinyi originally thought that with the matter of Liu Lingyan and Xu Manyue’s marriage on Xu Shijiu’s mind, her own issues would be forgotten. She believed Xu Shijiu wouldn’t keep pressing for answers.
Clearly, she had been too naive.
Later that night, while doing homework, Lin Xinyi was explaining a question to Xu Shijiu. Once she finished going over one of the problems, Xu Shijiu immediately set down her pen, moved her wheelchair to the front of Lin Xinyi, looked up, and stared directly at her.
“Lin Xinyi, what exactly did you and sister-in-law talk about?” Xu Shijiu questioned her directly. She didn’t believe that Lin Xinyi would approach Liu Lingyan for no reason. She didn’t believe there was anything so serious that Lin Xinyi needed to ask Liu Lingyan about.
Lin Xinyi had not expected the conversation to come back to her. Her hand froze mid-turn in the air as she flipped through her textbook. She gave a half smile and asked, “You really want to know?”
“Yes,” Xu Shijiu nodded seriously. Her eyes were full of longing, eager for the truth.
“I’m sorry, Xu Shijiu. I can’t tell you right now.” Lin Xinyi couldn’t bring herself to say it.
If she did, she knew both Xu Shijiu and Xu Manyue would probably object to it, even though she had already made up her mind.
“Are you kidding? Why would I even want to know?” Xu Shijiu scoffed, trying to act indifferent. She didn’t want to know anything. Or at least, that’s what she told herself. But in the end, she still muttered, “What kind of secret is so mysterious that you can’t even say it?”
“Anyway… it’s not something that will hurt you.” Lin Xinyi chose her words carefully. She stayed firm and didn’t let anything slip. Xu Shijiu had no way of prying more out of her. She turned her head away with frustration and didn’t even bother looking at her homework anymore.
“Be good. One day, I’ll tell you,” Lin Xinyi said softly, seeing how sulky Xu Shijiu had become. As soon as she made that promise, Xu Shijiu’s expression lightened, and she picked up her pen again to continue solving problems.
Lin Xinyi watched as Xu Shijiu buried her head in her work and shook her head slightly. She didn’t know whether to call her naive or just easy to fool. Or maybe, it meant that Xu Shijiu had completely placed her trust in her. So much so that she didn’t even consider the possibility that she might be lied to.
