Wife, Your Secret Identity Is Exposed - Chapter 5
Inside the Director’s office, Fu Yan sat in her chair, her expression solemn as she scrutinized the data on her computer screen. Her fingers flew across the keyboard with a rhythmic clack-clack-clack, seemingly oblivious to the presence of another person in the room.
Song Tiantian sat on the sofa, her eyes fixed intently on Fu Yan. She thought Fu Yan was truly beautiful; even with her hair casually tied up, she looked as exquisite as if she had paid for a professional styling session.
Standard professional attire, which Song Tiantian usually remembered as stiff and drab, looked remarkably elegant on her almost like a manga character with a perfect silhouette.
Eventually, this burning gaze began to affect the woman at work. The moment Fu Yan looked up, the typing stopped abruptly.
Song Tiantian met her gaze without flinching. Instead, she offered a radiant smile and took the initiative to speak: “Director Fu, what exactly is my job?”
The corners of Fu Yan’s mouth quirked up slightly. She picked up her phone and sent a voice message to someone.
“Lan Lan, come to my office.”
A moment later, the office door pushed open, and a young woman who looked rather stiff and nervous appeared at the doorway. “Director Fu.”
Director Fu’s eyes remained on her screen, her eyelids not even flickering as she gave a low, neutral response: “Take the new colleague to complete the onboarding procedures.”
“Understood!”
Lan Lan immediately beckoned to Song Tiantian. Once the two had stepped out of the office, Lan Lan let out a massive sigh of relief, looking as if she had just escaped from a tiger’s den.
Seeing this, Song Tiantian couldn’t help but grin. “What’s wrong, sister? Your reaction is so strange. You’re acting like Director Fu eats people for breakfast.”
Lan Lan cautiously scanned their surroundings and whispered, “It’s normal that you don’t know since you’re new, but Director Fu actually eats people.”
Seeing how serious she was, Song Tiantian laughed even harder. “Hahaha, seriously?”
“Totally serious. Why would I lie to you? You’ll find out how fierce Director Fu is in a few days.” Lan Lan paused to size up Song Tiantian and extended her hand. “By the way, I’m Lan Lan. What’s your name?”
“Song Tiantian ‘Sweet’ as in sugar.”
Lan Lan nodded and enthusiastically guided her through the onboarding paperwork, then personally introduced her to every colleague in the Marketing Department.
By the time they finished, it was nearly the end of the workday. Song Tiantian sat at her workstation, thinking that the job was actually quite interesting. The colleagues were very warm, the work wasn’t grueling, and when there was nothing to do, she could even play games on her computer under the guise of “conducting player experience tests.”
“Dear Mommy, I really like this job. I’m going to work hard!”
Song Tiantian secretly sent a message to Yu Jiao, feeling delighted. When she put her phone down and looked up, Fu Yan was standing right in front of her. Fu Yan was staring straight at her, a faint, unreadable smile playing on her lips.
“New colleague, how is it? Are you satisfied with the atmosphere of our department?”
Fu Yan held a folder, her tone gentle. Song Tiantian, suspecting nothing, nodded obediently. “Very satisfied! I love the atmosphere here, it’s very relaxed and happy.”
The moment those words left her mouth, the air suddenly froze. The surrounding colleagues didn’t even dare to breathe. Suddenly, the sound of frantic typing erupted from all directions as everyone became incredibly “busy.”
Fu Yan gave a faint smile and lightly pushed up her gold-rimmed glasses. “As long as you’re satisfied.”
She turned to leave, but stopped after two steps and looked back at Song Tiantian. “Since you’re so satisfied, stay behind and work overtime tonight.”
Song Tiantian looked up in a daze, forcing a smile. “That… probably isn’t necessary? I still need to get used to the pace of the work.”
Although she could play games at the office, she could only play the company’s internal titles. The games Song Tiantian actually wanted to play were not among them. Her heart was already set on going home to the embrace of her online friends and continuing their previous battles.
Seeing her refusal, the smile on Fu Yan’s face deepened. She crossed her arms, staring intently at Song Tiantian as she walked toward her step by step. She leaned down and patted her shoulder. “It’s your first day. It’s only right that I treat you to a meal. It’s settled: stay for overtime, and I’ll take you out for a late-night snack afterward.”
“Ah?…” Song Tiantian wanted to refuse again, but the moment she met Fu Yan’s hawk-like gaze, the words died in her throat.
Fu Yan smiled faintly and continued, “Give me a chance to treat you to a snack, okay?”
Song Tiantian found it impossible to say no. She reluctantly let go of her small designer bag and nodded woodenly. “Okay.”
As soon as Fu Yan turned and left, Song Tiantian slumped against her chair like a deflated balloon, all hope gone from her eyes.
Lan Lan leaned over and whispered, “What did I tell you? I told you our Director Fu eats people.”
From the other workstation, Li Shu burst out laughing. Ignoring Lan Lan’s indignant look, she looked at Song Tiantian. “Don’t be scared. Director Fu isn’t as terrifying as she says. As long as you are careful and don’t make mistakes that give her a reason to lecture you, you’ll be fine.”
Lan Lan pursed her lips and said sarcastically, “Oh right, right, you’re always right. Director Fu isn’t scary at all.”
Li Shu rolled her eyes. “Boring.”
Suddenly, Li Shu stood up. Lan Lan flinched, pulling back in exaggerated fear. “What are you doing?”
Li Shu raised the folder in her hand and glared. “Sister, what could I possibly do to you? I’m going to submit last month’s monthly report.”
Lan Lan sat back up and started hammering at her keyboard. “Why are you so fast? I’m going to be the last one to submit again, and I’ll be the one getting scolded.”
Li Shu looked at her with amusement. “Are you scolded because you’re last? You’re scolded because your work is full of errors. Stop throwing shade at Director Fu, okay?”
Li Shu then turned to the watching Song Tiantian and comforted her: “Don’t worry, Director Fu really is a good person.”
Once Li Shu left, Lan Lan whispered to Song Tiantian, “Pfft, ‘full of errors’? I only got the title wrong! Just the title! Director Fu almost scolded me to death. Tiantian, you have to be careful not to make that kind of mistake.”
Song Tiantian nodded sincerely. “Mm-hmm, I got it. I definitely won’t make that mistake.”
6:00 PM
Everyone left work on time except for Song Tiantian. She sat at her desk with nothing to do, so she opened her computer to try out the company’s internal games.
“Song Tiantian.”
Fu Yan’s voice drifted over from the Director’s office. Song Tiantian jumped up. “Present! What is it?”
“Please prepare a copy of last month’s monthly report as well. If you can’t find the data, ask the other colleagues for it.”
After saying this, Fu Yan briskly turned back into her office. The door remained open, with no intention of being closed.
Looking at that open door, Song Tiantian felt uneasy. From her seat, she could see Fu Yan working at her desk. It felt like she was voyeuristically watching her boss, while simultaneously being monitored by her.
She lowered her head and messaged Lan Lan for last month’s data.
To her surprise, the volume of data was far more than she imagined. Word documents flooded her phone one after another, she could barely keep up with receiving them.
Lan Lan: I can’t believe you have to do a monthly report on your first day. So tragic. Work fast, it needs to be submitted by Friday.
Song Tiantian: Okay, thank you. [Crying cat emoji]
Song Tiantian looked at the files, feeling overwhelmed. She opened the report from the month before last to learn the format, but the moment she opened it, she was stunned.
Before her eyes were endless records of data. She scrolled and scrolled, but couldn’t find the bottom.
Management communication, brand marketing, promotional materials, technical support feedback, and game planning promotions, all the data had to be organized and reported.
Song Tiantian was in disbelief, thinking Lan Lan had accidentally sent an annual report. After double-checking and receiving the same answer, her vision went dark.
“How is it possible to finish this by Friday?”
She felt like crying, but didn’t yet realize how serious the consequences could be. After all, she was just a newcomer, surely the veterans in the department would handle the bulk of it.
She propped up her chin and procrastinated. It wasn’t until 9:00 PM, when the lights in the Director’s office clicked off, that she finally snapped out of her drowse.
“Song Tiantian.”
Fu Yan stood before her with her arms crossed. Seeing the girl sleeping so soundly, she reached out to nudge her awake. Song Tiantian, caught off guard, felt her head tilt forward.
Fu Yan quickly reached out to catch her face, preventing her from slamming into the keyboard.
Though not painful, the movement was enough to wake Song Tiantian. She opened her eyes blearily and saw herself resting in Fu Yan’s palm. She scrambled to sit upright and gave a sheepish smile. “Work is over? You worked hard today, Director Fu!”
The moment she said it, she regretted it. She sounded like she was the boss.
Luckily, Fu Yan didn’t take offense. She spoke as usual: “Let’s go. I’m treating you to a snack.”
Song Tiantian’s mood brightened instantly. She jumped up and followed Fu Yan, her mouth running non-stop with questions.
“Director Fu, why does the Marketing Department have so much to do? Do we even manage game planning? Isn’t there a separate department for that?”
“If we do all the work, what do they do?”
Inside the elevator, Fu Yan reached past Song Tiantian’s back to press the button. Just then, Song Tiantian turned around. The distance between them vanished, creating a momentarily intimate posture.
Song Tiantian hurriedly shuffled two steps to the side to create space.
Looking straight ahead, Fu Yan answered coldly: “All game planning proposals must be evaluated and reviewed by our Marketing Department. Only after we approve can they move to the next step.”
“Oh,” Song Tiantian nodded. Just as she was about to drop the subject, Fu Yan continued.
“Did you not look at last month’s data, or did they not send it to you?”
Fu Yan’s voice held a mix of blame, gravity, and an unreadable quality. Song Tiantian glanced at her, seeing her calm face, she assumed she wasn’t angry and flashed a smile to gloss over it.
“They sent it! Lan Lan sent it immediately. I looked at it too. Maybe it’s because I’m too hungry that my brain isn’t keeping up. I’ll understand it once I look again tomorrow!”
Song Tiantian smiled playfully, thinking to herself: If there’s something I don’t get tomorrow, I’ll just ask Lan Lan. I’m definitely not asking you.
Ding!
The moment the elevator doors opened, two workers carrying wooden planks rushed in. A sharp edge of a plank headed straight for Song Tiantian’s neck.
Fu Yan’s face went pale. She lunged forward, pulling Song Tiantian into her arms, while simultaneously snapping at the workers.
“Sirs! Please check if anyone is inside before rushing into the elevator! This edge is so sharp, if it hit her neck, would you be responsible? Even if it didn’t hit her neck, what if it scarred her face? How would she face people?”
The workers were startled and apologized profusely. “Sorry, sorry! we didn’t think anyone would be in the elevator at this hour. We were in a hurry. So sorry, we’ll be careful next time.”
Song Tiantian was awkwardly hunched over, leaning into Fu Yan’s embrace. Her hands gripped Fu Yan’s arms tightly to keep from slipping, her mind far too scrambled to process what Fu Yan was saying.
Fu Yan looked down at the restless person in her arms and frowned slightly. She shielded the girl’s head with one hand and scooped her up with the other, leading her out of the elevator.
“Thank you, Director Fu, for saving my life!”
Song Tiantian grinned and flashed a finger-heart at her. Seeing this, Fu Yan froze.
A memory suddenly surfaced of an online partner she once had in a game. That “CP” (Couple Partner) had been clumsy and often unhelpful, but possessed a silver tongue and would frequently send finger-hearts to express gratitude.
Unfortunately, that partner had later broken off their bond quite heartlessly and run off with someone else.
