Why Won’t the Heroine Break Up With Me? [Quick Transmigration] - Chapter 9
Time passed quickly, and soon it was time for the daily meal distribution.
Today, as usual, the meal was being handed out on the second floor. Almost as soon as the time arrived, the survivors on the second floor automatically formed an orderly queue without any supervision.
“Let’s go line up too,” Yun Li said, taking Tang Congyue’s wrist. She stood on her tiptoes to peer toward the cafeteria window, muttering softly, “I wonder what we’re having today…”
No one answered Yun Li’s question this time, but Tang Congyue heard it. She grasped the wrist Yun Li was holding, her warm fingertips gently stroking the inside of Yun Li’s wrist.
Yun Li couldn’t help but feel ticklish and tried to pull her hand back, only to find Tang Congyue holding on tightly.
“What are you doing?” Yun Li whispered.
“Nothing,” Tang Congyue paused, her gaze fixed on the person at the front of the line. “We’re having porridge today.”
Porridge?
Yun Li followed Tang Congyue’s gaze and indeed saw the survivors who had received their meals holding bowls from which white steam rose.
At the sight, Yun Li couldn’t help but lick her slightly dry lips. “It’s been a long time since I’ve had porridge.”
Just the thought of thick, warm porridge filled her with anticipation.
“But porridge isn’t very filling.”
Yun Li: “…”
She couldn’t resist rolling her eyes at Tang Congyue and whispered, “Don’t be such a killjoy!”
“Just stating the facts,” Tang Congyue said calmly.
Yun Li: “…”
Fine, she had no way to deal with this woman.
Yun Li stopped paying attention to Tang Congyue, but Tang Congyue continued to occasionally stroke the tender skin on the inside of her wrist with her warm fingertips. The sensation was tingling and electric, making the tips of Yun Li’s ears grow slightly warm.
After a while, she couldn’t help but turn to Tang Congyue and say, “Stop messing around.”
Yun Li’s brown curly hair was draped behind her, so Tang Congyue couldn’t see her flushed ears. However, it wasn’t hard to detect the mix of embarrassment and annoyance in her tone. Tang Congyue’s lips curved into a slight smile, thinking to herself that her little girlfriend was still so easily flustered, before finally releasing her hand.
Seeing this, Yun Li quickly withdrew her hand and covered the wrist Tang Congyue had been stroking with her other hand. Yet, the spot still faintly retained the tingling sensation left by Tang Congyue’s fingertips.
This woman…
Yun Li’s long, curled eyelashes fluttered slightly as she secretly bit her lower lip.
“Yun Li!”
Suddenly, a somewhat familiar male voice called Yun Li’s name. Both Yun Li and Tang Congyue instinctively turned toward the sound and saw Zhao Jinhe walking in through the door.
Why was it this man again?
Simultaneously, Yun Li and Tang Congyue frowned.
Zhao Jinhe’s gaze had been fixed on Yun Li’s face, so when he saw her frown, his heart sank slightly. But he quickly brushed it off.
Yun Li doesn’t know me yet, that’s why she’s acting like this. Once she realizes how good I am, she definitely won’t treat me this way.
Zhao Jinhe thought to himself, then strode directly toward Yun Li.
“Yun Li, good afternoon,” Zhao Jinhe said with a bright smile.
Yun Li was exceptionally beautiful, and since arriving here, she had often been stopped by people confessing their feelings or trying to win her favor. So, seeing Zhao Jinhe behave this way didn’t surprise her. After a moment’s thought, she politely smiled back at him.
“Good afternoon.”
Zhao Jinhe was the manager of the fifth cafeteria, so being polite to him was never a bad idea.
However, Zhao Jinhe failed to see the courtesy beneath her smile, instead thinking she was charmed by his handsome grin. Instantly, his smile grew even more smug, and when Yun Li wasn’t looking, he shot Tang Congyue a triumphant glance.
Tang Congyue: “…”
Speechless.
Suppressing the urge to roll her eyes, Tang Congyue’s slightly pale face remained expressionless.
“Yun Li, are you here to get food?”
Now it was Yun Li’s turn to be speechless.
Wasn’t it obvious? If you don’t know what to say, maybe just don’t say anything at all!
Yun Li grumbled inwardly, but her beautiful face still wore a polite smile.
“Yes,” she replied to Zhao Jinhe’s question.
Zhao Jinhe glanced toward the serving window and quickly figured out what was being served that day. Frowning slightly, he remarked to Yun Li, “It’s porridge today? Porridge doesn’t really fill you up.”
Yun Li’s polite smile began to strain.
Why did everyone have to be such a killjoy?
She felt a bit annoyed and didn’t really want to engage with Zhao Jinhe anymore. But just then, he suddenly pulled a chocolate bar from his pocket and unceremoniously shoved it into Yun Li’s hand.
Zhao Jinhe moved so quickly that even Tang Congyue didn’t react in time. Only when she realized what he had done did her expression turn icy cold.
Yun Li was also stunned. By the time she gathered her thoughts and was about to say something, Zhao Jinhe beamed brightly and said, “I just happened to have this chocolate. I don’t like sweet stuff, so you can have it.”
Yun Li didn’t like receiving favors from strangers and was about to return the chocolate when she caught sight of Tang Congyue’s visibly displeased expression out of the corner of her eye. She paused.
Perhaps noticing Yun Li’s hesitation, Zhao Jinhe quickly added, “You turned me down last time, don’t refuse me again!”
Yun Li: “…”
Suddenly, the chocolate in her hand felt like a hot potato. Logically, she should give it back, but considering Tang Congyue’s sour expression and the mission that had brought her here, she felt she couldn’t just return it. So… she decided to accept it, though she didn’t dare look at Tang Congyue.
“Then… thank you?” Yun Li’s voice was soft, but both Tang Congyue and Zhao Jinhe heard it.
Seeing that she had accepted it, Zhao Jinhe grinned even more triumphantly. “No problem, no problem!”
Then, remembering he still had plenty of chocolates and biscuits back in his office, his heart began to stir with excitement, and he started chattering away nonstop.
Yun Li forced herself to chat with Zhao Jinhe for a while until she felt the atmosphere around them grow chilly. Just then, someone came up to speak with Zhao Jinhe, and their conversation finally ended.
After Zhao Jinhe left, Yun Li still didn’t dare look at Tang Congyue. Noticing that Tang Congyue remained silent, a sense of unease rose within her. Nervously, she collected a bowl of plain congee and waited nearby until Tang Congyue had also gotten hers. Only then did the two return to their previous seats.
Tang Congyue said nothing. Yun Li said nothing. The silence between them was unnerving. Inevitably, Yun Li began to regret accepting Zhao Jinhe’s chocolate. Even for the sake of her mission, maybe she shouldn’t have done that…
I should return the chocolate later.
Yun Li thought to herself.
After finishing the congee, they washed and put away the bowls and spoons. Unable to bear the unnerving silence, Yun Li announced she was going to the restroom and quickly headed in that direction.
Tang Congyue glanced up at Yun Li’s retreating figure and, without a second thought, followed her.
Yun Li had no idea Tang Congyue was behind her until she entered the restroom and felt an arm wrap around her waist. Startled, she turned around quickly and only relaxed when she saw it was Tang Congyue.
“You…”
Before she could finish speaking, Tang Congyue pushed her into a stall.
With a click, the stall door locked.
