Why Won’t the Heroine Break Up With Me? [Quick Transmigration] - Chapter 3
“A-Li, wake up. It’s time to get up.”
At 7:30, the alarm set by Tang Congyue began to vibrate. Being a light sleeper, she woke immediately at the first tremor of her phone. After turning off the alarm, she gazed down at Yun Li, who was sleeping soundly with her head pillowed on Tang Congyue’s thigh, her dark eyes filled with tenderness.
She watched Yun Li’s peaceful sleeping face for a while longer. When she felt enough time had passed, she reached out and gently patted Yun Li’s cheek to wake her.
However, in her dreamy state, Yun Li found Tang Congyue’s voice irritating. She furrowed her brows, shifted to a more comfortable position, and continued sleeping.
Under normal circumstances, Tang Congyue would have let her sleep on, but they had plans for the day. She steeled herself and continued trying to rouse her.
This time, Yun Li finally woke. She struggled to open her eyes, her peach-blossom eyes hazy with sleep and glistening with moisture.
“Congyue?”
Her voice was soft and sticky, carrying the huskiness of someone just awakened, inexplicably captivating.
Tang Congyue felt as if a feather had lightly brushed against her heart, leaving her with a restless, itching sensation she couldn’t scratch. Instead, she raised her hand to cup Yun Li’s cheek, her thumb gently stroking the soft skin.
Though Yun Li had been drowsy, she quickly grew more alert upon sensing the dangerous undercurrent in Tang Congyue’s touch. She pulled Tang Congyue’s hand away from her cheek and slowly sat up from the floor.
“What time is it?” Yun Li asked while using her fingers to comb through her slightly disheveled brown curls.
Tang Congyue glanced at her phone. “Seven forty-five.”
“Aren’t we leaving at nine? Why did you wake me so early?” Yun Li pouted slightly in dissatisfaction.
“Have you forgotten how much you love to dawdle?” Tang Congyue crossed her arms, her gaze slowly sweeping over Yun Li’s delicate brows and eyes, her elegantly shaped nose, and her full, crimson lips.
Struck by the truth of the remark, Yun Li was effectively silenced. Noticing Tang Congyue’s intense stare, particularly fixed on her lips, she felt a sudden, inexplicable fluster. Unconsciously, she turned her body slightly to avoid Tang Congyue’s gaze.
“You’re so mean. I don’t dawdle at all,” Yun Li retorted, wrinkling her nose with a boldness that defied her lack of justification.
In response, Tang Congyue merely raised an eyebrow slightly and didn’t continue the conversation.
After a moment of silence, Yun Li handed the windbreaker that had been covering her calves to Tang Congyue. “Let’s go. We should freshen up.”
“Mm.”
Tang Congyue took the windbreaker, slipped it on, and shouldered her backpack. Then, they walked one after the other toward the restroom.
At this hour, few people were awake, so they moved quietly.
Upon entering the restroom, they were surprised to find Zhu Yaqin there as well.
“Awake?” Zhu Yaqin first glanced at Yun Li before letting her eyes settle on Tang Congyue’s face.
“Mm.”
“You two woke up quite early.”
“So did you.”
Seeing that the conversation wasn’t going anywhere, Zhu Yaqin smiled faintly. “I’ll head out first, then.”
“Mm.”
Only after Zhu Yaqin left did Yun Li and Tang Congyue begin their morning routine.
About ten minutes later, the two had finished washing up and leisurely stepped out of the restroom.
“What are we eating today?”
As soon as they exited, Yun Li habitually looped her arm through Tang Congyue’s.
Tang Congyue stood half a head taller than Yun Li. She lowered her head slightly and whispered into Yun Li’s ear, “There are two egg tarts left. You can have them.”
Knowing that Yun Li disliked compressed biscuits, Tang Congyue didn’t force her to eat them and instead gave her the remaining two egg tarts.
“Alright,” Yun Li agreed. “But what will you eat?”
“I’ll just grab something simple.”
Hearing this, Yun Li fell silent for a moment but ultimately said nothing, allowing Tang Congyue to lead her to the hot water dispenser.
After filling their bottles, the two didn’t return to their previous spot but stayed there to have breakfast. Yun Li ate the egg tarts while Tang Congyue had the compressed biscuits.
As Yun Li started on the second egg tart, she couldn’t hold back any longer and held it out to Tang Congyue. “You have this.”
Without waiting for a response, she leaned down and took a bite of the compressed biscuit from Tang Congyue’s hand.
Tang Congyue froze, her dark eyes softening with tenderness. She reached out and gently pinched Yun Li’s cheek.
“Silly.”
Yun Li: “???”
What was wrong with her? She was being considerate, and yet she got called silly?
“I guess you don’t want it after all,” Yun Li said, her peach-blossom eyes widening as she pretended to take the egg tart back. But Tang Congyue was quicker, catching her slender wrist before lowering her head to take the egg tart, smaller than the palm of her hand, into her mouth.
Tang Congyue looked up, her gaze fixed intently on Yun Li. She chewed slowly, swallowing the entire tart before speaking softly, “It’s delicious.”
Something in her eyes made Yun Li’s heart flutter. She averted her gaze, refusing to meet Tang Congyue’s eyes. “Right? Much better than compressed biscuits.”
“Mm, have some water.”
Worried that Yun Li might choke on the dry biscuit, Tang Congyue handed her the water bottle.
Yun Li took a small sip, feeling her throat clear. Satisfied, her brows and eyes relaxed into a gentle expression.
…
Time passed slowly, and more people began gathering around the hot water dispenser. Tang Congyue finally took Yun Li’s hand and led her back.
By then, it was already 8:35.
As soon as they returned to the library, Yun Li’s sharp eyes noticed a small crowd gathered around Zhu Yaqin.
“Should we go over?”
“Okay.”
They approached Zhu Yaqin, who promptly introduced Yun Li and Tang Congyue to the temporary teammates.
During the introductions, Yun Li scanned the group around Zhu Yaqin and quickly spotted the girl who had confronted her the day before. She frowned slightly but said nothing.
Including Zhu Yaqin, Yun Li, and Tang Congyue, the temporary team consisted of ten people, six girls and four boys, all following Zhu Yaqin’s lead.
After a brief round of introductions, Zhu Yaqin instructed them to fetch brooms and other items from the restroom to use as makeshift weapons. At exactly 9 o’clock, under the watchful eyes of others, they left the floor.
They descended the stairs quietly. When they reached the first-floor lobby and saw the dried, brownish bloodstains marring the once-pristine tiles, they fell into a heavy silence, each gripping their “weapons” tightly.
Zhu Yaqin pressed her lips together and murmured, “Let’s go.” With that, the group stepped out of the library.
Perhaps by sheer luck, they encountered no monsters outside. Relieved, they quickened their pace and headed toward the fifth cafeteria, the closest one to the library.
After walking for nearly five minutes, they hadn’t encountered any monsters, but the dried bloodstains on the ground still sent chills down their spines.
Yun Li, who had never witnessed such a scene before, tightened her grip on Tang Congyue’s hand.
Sensing her unease, Tang Congyue remained silent but squeezed her hand back firmly, offering silent reassurance.
“We’re almost there!”
Shortly after, someone suddenly spoke up, and everyone looked joyfully toward the fifth cafeteria in the distance. However, at that very moment, an extremely unpleasant roar echoed from nearby. Immediately afterward, a monster resembling a wolf-dog, covered in black tumors all over its body, appeared before them.
“It’s a monster!”
“Run! Run for your lives!”
Someone frantically dashed toward the fifth cafeteria, but this attracted the monster’s attention. Its murky yellow eyes fixed intently on the running figure, and with a sudden leap, its front claws latched onto the person’s back.
A tearing sound echoed as fabric and flesh scattered in all directions.
The monster opened its mouth wide, biting down on the man’s shoulder and shaking his body back and forth.
“Ah! Help! Help me!” the man screamed in agony.
“Damn it!”
Seeing this, Zhu Yaqin cursed under her breath and attacked the monster with the “weapon” in her hand. However, the wooden broom snapped in two upon impact. Attracted by the fresh blood, the monster turned its gaze toward her.
“Run!”
Tang Congyue shouted urgently.
Zhu Yaqin snapped back to reality and turned to flee, but she had already provoked the monster. It flung the man from its mouth and was about to attack her when Tang Congyue’s long leg swept out fiercely. Caught off guard, the ferocious monster was knocked back several steps, its head shaking violently.
“Run!”
Seizing the moment before the monster could react, Tang Congyue grabbed Yun Li and sprinted desperately toward the fifth cafeteria.
“Roar!”
“Roar! Roar!”
The monster roared in fury.
Tang Congyue couldn’t help but glance back and saw the monster about to pounce. Her pupils contracted, and as her gaze inadvertently met the monster’s murky eyes, the creature abruptly halted its leap, standing motionless in a daze.
This situation left Tang Congyue baffled, but she continued pulling Yun Li as they ran.
Just as they were about to reach the fifth cafeteria, several people rushed out from inside.
They wore excited expressions and were actually running toward the wolf-dog-like monster.
Tang Congyue instinctively sensed something was wrong. Turning to look, she saw the leading boy wave his hand, and a burst of orange-red flames shot toward the monster.
Witnessing this, Tang Congyue froze in place.
What was going on?
