Why Won’t the Heroine Break Up With Me? [Quick Transmigration] - Chapter 18
As soon as Zhao Jinhe returned from outside, he caught the domineering aroma lingering in the air.
“What smells so good?” he muttered.
From behind him, Luo Zhibo’s voice chimed in. “It smells amazing! Like braised pork!”
Braised pork? Zhao Jinhe’s mouth watered. It felt like ages since he’d last eaten braised pork.
With that thought, he strode briskly toward the kitchen. From a distance, he spotted Yun Li and Tang Congyue. Unconsciously, his steps slowed, but even so, Tang Congyue turned and glanced back.
Their eyes met, both expressions indifferent. In the end, it was Tang Congyue who coldly averted her gaze.
For a moment, Zhao Jinhe hesitated, unsure whether to approach. After wrestling with the decision, he finally made up his mind and walked toward Tang Congyue and the others.
Soon, he saw the plate of braised pork set before Yun Li.
There was no meat left in the cafeteria, so without a doubt, he knew this braised pork was made from monster meat. Instantly, he recalled the time he had offered monster meat to Yun Li, only to be rejected.
His fairly handsome face tightened, and a pang of discomfort struck his heart.
The meat he had offered, Yun Li refused to eat.
But the meat Tang Congyue provided, she was happily devouring.
The contrast made Zhao Jinhe feel miserable. He also noticed the sparkle in Yun Li’s eyes, beautiful and captivating, but realizing it wasn’t for him, his heart felt clogged, heavy and stifled.
“Brother Zhao, you’re here?” Zhu Yaqin, who had been focused on eating, noticed Zhao Jinhe and quickly stood up to greet him.”
Meanwhile, Yun Li glanced up at him briefly before looking away.
“Yeah, keep eating,” he replied, then turned to Hu Junfen, who was smiling as she cooked the meat Tang Congyue had given her. “Auntie Hu, could you make me a portion of braised pork too?”
He wanted to taste just how delicious this braised pork was, to make Yun Li react like that!
Hu Junfen immediately beamed. “Xiao Zhao, just wait a bit. Auntie will finish this batch first, then make yours.”
“I’m in no hurry. I’ll step out for now.”
“Alright, alright! I’ll bring it to you once it’s ready!”
With that, Zhao Jinhe cast a deep glance at Yun Li before turning to leave the kitchen.
He couldn’t stay there any longer, afraid that his jealousy might show and scare Yun Li away.
After Zhao Jinhe left, Yun Li finished her meal, stood up, washed her hands and face. Her delicate features, cleansed by water, looked as fresh and lovely as a lotus emerging from the water.
Zhu Yaqin, a self-professed admirer of beauty, was momentarily mesmerized, until Tang Congyue’s dark eyes swept over her coolly. Shivering, she quickly averted her gaze.
The beauty was indeed stunning, but her protector was far too intimidating to stare at for long.
“Full?” Tang Congyue retracted her gaze, her dark eyes softening as they settled on Yun Li.
“Full.” Yun Li smiled, her peach-blossom eyes sparkling. “This is the happiest meal I’ve had in days.”
She truly hadn’t expected that, despite their ferocious appearance, monster meat could taste so delicious.
Tang Congyue was momentarily stunned, then carefully observed Yun Li. Only then did she notice that Yun Li’s face had grown thinner compared to before. Her face was already small, but now…
Unconsciously, Tang Congyue felt a pang of heartache and secretly regretted not joining the patrol team earlier.
“What are you thinking about?”
While Tang Congyue was lost in thought, Yun Li walked over and pressed her slightly cool, damp hand against Tang Congyue’s cheek.
Startled by the touch, Tang Congyue snapped back to reality, her delicate brows furrowing slightly. She then took Yun Li’s hand and warmed it with her own heated palm.
“Nothing,” Tang Congyue replied to Yun Li’s question.
Yun Li sat down beside her. “Are you full?”
“Yes, I am.”
There was still half of the braised pork left, so Tang Congyue decided to save it for the afternoon.
“Shall we head back?” Tang Congyue suggested.
“Sure.”
After informing Zhu Yaqin, who was still eating, the two of them returned to the second floor, Tang Congyue holding Yun Li’s hand with one hand and carrying the braised pork with the other.
…
Yun Li, feeling full, began pacing around the second floor to aid her digestion.
Once she felt it was enough and had nothing else to do, she grew drowsy. She took off her windbreaker and leaned against Tang Congyue to sleep.
By the time she woke up, it was already time for the cafeteria to serve food again.
After stretching lazily, Yun Li pulled Tang Congyue along to join the queue.
Yesterday, the cafeteria had served plain congee, but today it was steamed buns, each one as large as a fist.
After getting their buns, Tang Congyue reheated the braised pork in the second-floor kitchen, and the two began eating it with the buns.
They had only taken a few bites when a girl suddenly approached them.
“Um… hello…”
Yun Li blinked her peach-blossom eyes and recognized the girl as the one who had spoken to her earlier.
“Hello, is there something you need?” Yun Li asked.
“Well… could I trade this for a few pieces of meat?” The girl couldn’t help but swallow nervously as she spoke.
Yun Li was taken aback for a moment, noticing a chocolate bar, about the length of a palm, resting in the girl’s hand.
Seeing that Yun Li and Tang Congyue remained silent, a flicker of disappointment crossed the girl’s face.
She had been craving meat for a long time but hadn’t dared to trade with the group on the first floor. When she saw Yun Li and the others eating meat and remembered they had spoken a few times before, making them seem approachable, she decided to give it a try. Now, it seemed she had been too hopeful.
Just as the girl was about to leave, a sudden “Wait” stopped her in her tracks. She looked up in confusion, meeting Yun Li’s beautiful peach-blossom eyes.
“We can trade, but we’ve already eaten from this. Do you mind?” Yun Li glanced at Tang Congyue, who gave an almost imperceptible nod, and her peach-blossom eyes curved into a slight smile.
The girl’s face lit up with joy. “I don’t mind! I really don’t!”
At a time like this, having meat to eat was already a luxury. How could she possibly mind?
“Then go get a bowl and chopsticks.”
“Okay!”
The girl hurried off and returned shortly with a clean bowl and chopsticks, her eyes fixed eagerly on them.
“Let me do it.”
Yun Li took the bowl and chopsticks and began placing pieces of braised pork into the girl’s bowl.
There were about a dozen pieces of braised pork left in their own bowl, and Yun Li generously gave her ten pieces, making the girl feel a bit embarrassed as she stood by.
“Is… isn’t this too much?” the girl asked cautiously.
“Not at all, not at all,” Yun Li waved her hand dismissively and handed the bowl back.
The girl quickly took it and then handed Yun Li the chocolate she had been saving for a long time.
“Thank you, really, thank you so much!” The girl bowed deeply to them, making Yun Li feel extremely embarrassed.
“It’s nothing serious. Go ahead and eat,” Yun Li said, glancing around. Noticing many people looking their way, she thought for a moment and added, “Just eat here near us.”
The girl understood Yun Li’s intention and gave them a grateful look before sitting down at a nearby table.
As she ate, the girl couldn’t hold back her tears.
Seeing this, Yun Li felt a pang of sadness. She thought to herself that if she weren’t Tang Congyue’s girlfriend, her own situation might be even worse than this girl’s.
With this thought, she instinctively reached out and grasped Tang Congyue’s hand.
Tang Congyue didn’t say anything, but her warm hand gave Yun Li’s a gentle squeeze, offering silent comfort.
