- Chapter 2 - The Mysterious Seventh Person
When Yu Lin walked into the classroom, the noisy room fell silent for a brief two seconds before being replaced by a wave of whispers.
Luchuan High School was a famous private aristocratic school in City A. Most of the students were descendants of wealthy and powerful families, such as entrepreneurs, lawyers, doctors, and celebrities. There were students from humble backgrounds like Xie Zhirang, scattered throughout various classes, but aside from their brilliant grades, they had almost no presence.
Xie Zhirang was the exception. Thanks to Xu Ze’an’s special “attention,” Lin Zhou’s pursuit, and his consistent rank as first in the grade, he received widespread notice.
Xie Zhirang returned five minutes later. He had likely woken Xu Ze’an up after Yu Lin left and bore the brunt of his anger. His fair, thin forearm now had a fresh bruise compared to before. He timidly walked to his seat, his eyes as red as a rabbit’s. He timidly said to his desk-mate on the outside, “Excuse me.”
The response was an impatient “Tsk.” However, the person still let him in.
The others looked at the injury on his arm and the footprint on Yu Lin’s clothes, and they immediately knew what had happened.
“Our Zhirang, though plain-looking, is an Omega after all. This is the how many-th time Xu Ze’an has fought someone over him?”
A boy sitting in front of Yu Lin leaned back, his back resting against Yu Lin’s desk. His oversized school uniform hung halfway off his shoulders, revealing a designer brand logo on the T-shirt underneath. He looked like a typical loafer.
“It must be nice to be an Omega, right? People fighting over him every day. I wonder what kind of skill he has.” The boy tapped his fingers on Yu Lin’s desk, reaching out as if to touch the red mark on his face. “He really hit you hard. I think you should just forget it. You know Xu Ze’an’s family situation. There’s no need to cause a rift with him over an Omega like this.”
His voice wasn’t loud, but it was just enough to reach Xie Zhirang’s ears. Xie Zhirang’s hunched back trembled slightly. His lowered head tilted back a fraction, and the look he cast toward Yu Lin was extremely complex.
Yu Lin said nothing. He simply brushed the boy’s hand away and said flatly, “My family’s hospital has gender reassignment services. If you’re that envious, why don’t you go try it yourself?”
The boy was choked for words. He gave Yu Lin a surprised look and opened his mouth to say more, but he was interrupted by the class bell.
A young mathematics teacher walked to the podium carrying books. Yu Lin took one look and withdrew his gaze, casually playing with the fountain pen in his hand.
Most students at Luchuan High School would eventually use their family connections to go abroad or enter special preparatory schools. It was common for them not to listen in class. As long as they didn’t cause trouble, many teachers turned a blind eye.
However, today was a bit strange. Xie Zhirang, who usually listened with rapt attention, was unusually distracted. He quietly turned his head back several times.
Yu Lin noticed Xie Zhirang’s subtle gaze but didn’t care. He played with his pen for half the class and daydreamed for the other half. Finally, when the bell rang, he let out a sigh of relief, packed his things, and prepared to run out the door.
This kind of life was pure torture for him, even if 007 told him this was a path every normal person had to take.
Then, he probably wasn’t a normal person before.
But unexpectedly, just as he reached the door, his clothes were caught by a slight tug.
Yu Lin’s instinctive reaction was to throw the person off. He had just reached out to grab the wrist—which was as thin as a bamboo pole—when he heard the other party let out a hum of pain.
His movement stopped. He turned back to meet a pair of bloodshot eyes.
Yu Lin asked, “What is it?”
There was no such segment in the plot.
007 said through gritted teeth, “So you actually know what ‘plot’ is?”
Xie Zhirang lowered his head to look at Yu Lin’s hand and whispered hesitantly, “Xu Ze’an… he contacted some people. Be careful when you go out. He won’t let this go.”
Yu Lin didn’t expect him to be there to tip him off. He tilted his head, studying him strangely for a few seconds, and asked, “Don’t you like him? Why are you helping me?”
Xie Zhirang froze, seemingly not expecting Yu Lin to be so blunt. His eyes flickered elsewhere, and an embarrassed expression appeared on his face.
“I don’t like him.” His voice was still very small, and he repeated it twice. “It’s not like that.”
Yu Lin’s gaze swept over the boy’s arm. That bruise seemed to have spread over the course of the class, looking particularly horrifying on his pale skin.
He released Xie Zhirang’s hand, moved his finger up, and gave the bruised flesh a poke.
Xie Zhirang groaned again, looking as fragile as a porcelain doll.
Yu Lin asked, “Since it hurts, why don’t you fight back?”
Xie Zhirang looked at him in confusion.
“You could gouge his eyes out with your fingers; that’s the most fragile part of the human body. Or strike his throat; that area is very soft. If all else fails, there’s a man’s vital spot. It’s just one kick.”
Xie Zhirang’s pupils dilated. “But…”
Yu Lin didn’t give him a chance to “but,” acting as if those words were just a casual remark, not expecting an answer. He adjusted his slipping backpack and remembered something before leaving. He turned back and said, “Oh, thanks for the warning anyway.”
“Turning west out of the school gate is the only path Lin Zhou takes home. There is an alley there, the perfect spot for an ambush. If Xu Ze’an wants to cause trouble, he will likely wait there. Change your direction today. Though going east is a long detour, it’s mostly busy areas. If all else fails, you can go directly to Lin Zhou’s parents’ house for the night.”
007 chattered in Yu Lin’s mind, planning escape routes one moment and complaining the next that Yu Lin’s impulsiveness had ruined the original plot and caused this interlude. It was a far cry from the cold persona it had when they first met.
However, Yu Lin did not listen to the advice. He ignored the frantic roaring in his head and resolutely turned onto the western path.
The shortest route from Luchuan High to the apartment Lin Zhou rented required passing through two alley entrances, with several narrow lanes branching off.
Just as Yu Lin passed the first alley entrance, he heard footsteps and sharp, piercing singing coming from ahead. For this body, his hearing was somewhat excessively sharp.
Yu Lin reached back to grab his backpack, took out a brick he had swiped from the school flowerbed, and tossed the backpack onto the ground.
The leader was a fat man with a fleshy face and a cigarette in his mouth. The 170cm+ Lin Zhou stood with his head right at the man’s chest, looking as small as a chick.
The man walked up to Yu Lin, who was holding the brick. He scanned him up and down, seemingly amused by this “stubborn resistance.” He leaned on the person next to him and laughed mockingly, asking, “Are you Lin Zhou?”
Yu Lin looked up. “Yes. What’s the matter?”
“Usually nothing, but I was asked a favor. A friend of mine suffered at your hands, and I’ve been told to teach you a lesson.”
Yu Lin peered behind the man but didn’t see Xu Ze’an.
“Oh. Why didn’t he come himself? Is he scared?”
The fat man’s expression soured at Yu Lin’s dismissive tone. He endured it for a second and said with mock earnestness, “Little brother, a word of advice: don’t be too arrogant in life, or you’ll suffer.”
Yu Lin ignored him, tightening his grip on the brick while secretly scanning the people present.
“Except for the fat guy and the one next to him, the others are all Betas. Don’t force it. If you can’t win, just run. It’s not embarrassing.”
Yet, Yu Lin spoke up. “Are you planning to gang up on me, or will you come at me one by one?”
He asked this casually, even with a hint of innocence, but to the fat man, it sounded like mockery and provocation.
“My friend said to let you suffer a bit. Since we’re from the same school, let’s not ruin the classmate bond.”
He rolled up his sleeves and approached Yu Lin. When the distance between them was only half a meter, Yu Lin moved suddenly, slamming the brick directly into the fat man’s head.
The tension snapped. The stalemate was broken by this single brick. The others reacted quickly, swarming forward with swinging fists.
The fat man had thought that bringing five people to teach a Beta a lesson was more than enough, even a bit beneath him. But he didn’t expect that while Yu Lin wasn’t tall, his movements were incredibly agile. He moved through the five people like a swimming fish, dodging their attacks multiple times, yet every strike he landed was heavy and ruthless.
The spot where the brick hit felt hot and swollen, with warm liquid flowing down. He couldn’t care about his buzzing head; his only thought was to fix this brat.
The brick soon shattered in Yu Lin’s hands. He kicked away a Beta approaching him, preparing to swing his next fist at the fat man’s face.
Suddenly, that familiar stinging pain shot through his mind again, stimulating all his nerves like an electric current. Yu Lin stumbled. In that split second of vulnerability, the fat man grabbed him by the neck.
However, the stinging only lasted a few seconds. Yu Lin quickly regained his strength, elbowing the fat man in the face and lunging his waist to kick the dark figure approaching him.
The dizziness from the pain made his vision slightly blurry. He leaned against the wall to steady himself and took a few breaths. As he looked up toward the nearest sound, he noticed that a seventh person had appeared in the alley at some point.
In his view was a sophisticated suit, and further up, a gentle and refined face. Yet, when those peach-blossom eyes swept over him, they carried a hint of detachment and nobility.
007: “Finally, someone is here… Holy crap.”
The man wore an expensive watch on his wrist, but his well-defined hand held an iron rod. It made a piercing sound as it dragged across the concrete floor.
Yu Lin was a Beta and could not smell pheromones. However, the other two Alphas present clearly felt a massive sense of pressure and powerful aggression. The fat man began to tremble all over.
It was said that there was a hierarchy of suppression among Alphas. A powerful Alpha could make an opponent surrender just by releasing their pheromones.
“I was wondering why you hadn’t come home so late today. It turns out you ran into some unsavory thugs. Lin Zhou, did they bully you?” The man’s voice was pleasant, clear and magnetic, sounding like the ringing of jade in the empty alley.
Yu Lin stared at him across the group of people. The words “embarrassment” and “propriety” did not exist in his dictionary, so he didn’t feel there was anything wrong with staring at a stranger like this.
However, he felt this face looked a bit familiar. And even at such a distance, Yu Lin seemed to smell a faint, cold scent of cedar and snow from him.
“Who is this now?”
007 was silent for a few seconds before saying with difficulty, “…Wait a moment. I really want to know too.”
