- Chapter 1 - The Scum Hero and the Trash
Yu Lin’s consciousness awakened amidst chaos.
His mind was a mess, as if a gale had swept through it, leaving no valuable information behind. His body felt as though it had been run over by a car, and his abdomen throbbed with the sharp pain of twitching muscle.
He lay on a damaged gym foam mat. The foul smell of sweat mixed with mildew invaded his nostrils. Yu Lin shuddered, feeling a wave of nausea. He squinted his eyes to take in his surroundings.
It was a dilapidated school warehouse. Abandoned desks and chairs were piled haphazardly in the corners. The iron storage shelves were mottled with rust, a deflated basketball lay forgotten on the floor, and dust motes danced in the weak beams of light filtering through the gaps.
“Where is this?”
A slight electrical current flickered through his aching brain. A second later, he heard an electronic voice. “This is Worldline 0758. You are Lin Zhou, the affectionate male supporting lead of this worldline.”
Light and shadow shifted as a tall youth walked over slowly. A malicious and playful expression crossed his handsome face. He raised a sharp brow, stepped directly onto Yu Lin’s shoulder, and said with disdain, “You’re awake?”
“Do you still dare to covet my person in the future?”
The youth’s figure cast a large shadow over Yu Lin’s face. The stick in his hand poked intentionally at the painful spot on Yu Lin’s abdomen, pressing down and twisting hard.
Yu Lin bit back a groan of pain. He opened his eyes and looked at the youth coldly.
“Who is he?”
Yu Lin had lost his memory in an explosion. When he woke up again, he had been thrown into a system called the Affectionate Male Lead System.
His brain throbbed with a faint pain, as if reminding him that his past life was far from peaceful, yet he could not recall a single memory related to it. He tried to dig deep into his consciousness for answers, but he only found more confusion and stinging pain. He felt like he was lost in a pitch-black forest, unable to even discern his direction.
Whether that explosion was an accident or a carefully planned conspiracy, he did not know. If not for the appearance of System 007, he would not even have remembered his own name.
007 told Yu Lin that because his mental network was damaged, he was currently recuperating in a hospital in the First Galaxy. Only by playing the role of the affectionate male lead in various worldlines and gathering enough “Affectionate Points” to repair his mental network could he return to reality.
If he failed to complete the tasks and repair the damaged mental network in time, his headaches would become more frequent until his brain died.
007 spoke. “The protagonist of this world, Xu Ze’an.”
Yu Lin tentatively retracted his abdomen, quietly moving the most painful area away from the stick. He replied indifferently, “Oh. It turns out that in your system, just about anyone can be a protagonist.”
007 let out a sigh. It did not know how it had been so unlucky to be assigned such a difficult task.
The host’s background was significant. He was the only successfully developed humanoid weapon in the Alliance in the last twenty years. Others had either turned mentally vacant or died during the research process. Eventually, that research was terminated, leaving behind only this one precious walking “data set.”
A humanoid weapon possessed no emotions and understood no desires. Even his perception of pain was meager. Asking such a person to play an affectionate male lead and gain someone else’s affection was nothing short of a fairy tale.
Furthermore, the background of this world was completely different from the world Yu Lin came from. 007 transmitted the worldline data to Yu Lin.
In this world, there was no war and no interstellar pirates. It was as peaceful as a paradise. Moreover, humans here had branched into six genders: Alpha, Beta, and Omega.
Yu Lin’s current identity was Lin Zhou, a Beta who grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth.
As a privileged second-generation youth, Lin Zhou had been a troublemaker since childhood, fearing neither heaven nor earth. However, in his eighteenth year, he stumbled. He fell in love with an Omega in his class, who happened to be one of the protagonists of this world, Xie Zhirang.
Xie Zhirang’s parents were both deceased, and he lived with his grandmother. He had been specially admitted to this school for the full tuition waiver and a scholarship that was worthless in the eyes of the wealthy heirs. Like the opening of every melodramatic novel, his weak and mild temperament attracted the attention of the other protagonist, Xu Ze’an.
The story of the two was simple. It began with Xu Ze’an’s momentary whim and deliberate manipulation, turned with Xu Ze’an’s debauchery, and was followed by Xie Zhirang’s pain and escape. After years of entanglement, they eventually ended up living a happy, ordinary life together.
Outside of this “beautiful” and dramatic story was Lin Zhou. The worldline did not explain in detail how he fell in love with Xie Zhirang. It only stated that he possessed all the essential elements of an affectionate male supporting lead.
When Xie Zhirang was sad, he comforted him. When Xie Zhirang ran away, he helped him. He gave silently behind Xie Zhirang’s back without asking for anything in return. Because of Xie Zhirang’s final disappearance, Xu Ze’an flew into a rage. To draw Xie Zhirang out, he began to target Lin Zhou, who had helped him escape, driving the Lin family’s company to the brink of bankruptcy. If Xie Zhirang had not intervened in time, Lin Zhou would likely have spent the rest of his life in poverty.
This affectionate male lead eventually appeared silently outside the venue during the couple’s wedding, leaving behind a blessing that no one heard.
After receiving the plot, Yu Lin stared directly at Xu Ze’an, who was looking down at him. “Am I insane?”
007 felt that Yu Lin’s memory could afford to be lost a little more thoroughly. It would be best if he became a blank piece of paper that went wherever it was told.
Seeing that Yu Lin did not answer, his unconstrained gaze made Xu Ze’an feel irritable, even provoked. The force in his hand increased, flipping Yu Lin onto the ground. Then, amidst the rising dust, he turned back and pulled someone who was hiding in the shadows.
Only then did Yu Lin notice that there was another person in the warehouse.
The person appeared to be eighteen, but his stature was not yet fully developed. He was thin and weak like a freshly sprouted branch. His entire body practically screamed “malnourished.” Trapped in Xu Ze’an’s arms, he looked like a small chick, pitiful and helpless.
His appearance was not particularly stunning either. He looked ordinary enough to blend into a crowd, especially with his half-drooping eyes that dared not look at anyone. He was timid and subservient.
Yu Lin instinctively thought, “It’s hard to imagine. He is not my type at all.”
007 really wanted to remind him that according to the real-time data displayed in the background, he was not yet capable of generating something as advanced as “aesthetic taste.”
Furthermore, you are currently being beaten by your rival in front of your beloved. Please act a bit more humiliated.
Xu Ze’an pinched Xie Zhirang’s chin, forcing him to look at Yu Lin slumped on the ground. The corners of his thin, cold lips curled up as he said maliciously, “Tell me, as a Beta, why can’t you have some self-awareness? A piece of trash who can’t even smell pheromones actually has the nerve to compete with me?”
“Can you satisfy him? Can you mark him? I don’t even need to say a word. I only need to release a little bit of pheromones and hook my finger, and he will crawl beneath me, begging me to love him.”
“What can you give him?”
Lin Zhou’s family background was decent, but compared to a wealthy heir like Xu Ze’an, it was completely insufficient. The Xu Group’s industries were everywhere, to the point that Lin Zhou’s later help for Xie Zhirang’s resistance was like an ant trying to stop a carriage.
Yu Lin’s gaze slid across Xie Zhirang’s face, seeing fear, panic, and embarrassment.
“He is so annoying. Can you make him shut up? My pain is making me irritable.” Yu Lin did a rough estimation. He probably had multiple soft tissue contusions on his body. It seemed that before he arrived, Xu Ze’an had already brutally beaten this male lead who coveted the protagonist.
007 only comforted him coldly. “This is a necessary plot point. Endure it a bit longer.”
Yu Lin lowered his eyes and silently counted the flattened ping-pong balls scattered by the wall, trying to distract himself.
This action was seen by Xu Ze’an as a sign of submission. He was like a victorious rooster. Satisfaction and joy spread through his heart, but it was mostly driven by a wicked, high-handed desire for control.
He turned Xie Zhirang’s face, almost pinching his cheeks out of shape until red marks appeared. Then, he satisfiedly placed a kiss on the corner of his mouth and said, “Aren’t you going to say something to your knight in shining armor?”
“What?” Xie Zhirang spoke in a thin, weak voice like the hum of a mosquito.
Xu Ze’an thought for a moment. “Just say, please ask this weak and incompetent Beta to stop bothering us.”
Xie Zhirang’s eyelashes trembled. His mouth opened and closed, but he muttered and did not dare to speak.
Xu Ze’an waited for half a minute. Seeing his hesitant appearance, he eventually pushed him away impatiently.
“Forget it.” He bent down and picked up a torn sack that had been pressed under the foam mat. Holding his nose in disgust, he casually threw the sack over Yu Lin’s face.
An unfamiliar sense of dread surged from his limbs, gathering in his chest where his heart was racing madly. Yu Lin took a few hurried breaths uncontrollably. Before he could understand the feeling, he heard Xu Ze’an continue, “I heard you’re afraid of the dark. Is it called claustrophobia? Don’t be afraid. It’s just a small punishment. We’ll just lock you up for one class period.”
As he spoke, the rough fabric rubbed against his wrists. This physiological panic left behind by the original body’s remnants, along with the terror that his life was under threat, could no longer be ignored by distracting himself with external objects.
It happened in an instant. Xu Ze’an didn’t even see his movements before he was kicked in the shin. Subsequently, the mildewed and dusty foam mat obscured his entire vision. Yu Lin sprang up from the ground and delivered a vicious kick to Xu Ze’an’s lower abdomen.
The latter fell against the iron storage rack. The immense force made him feel as if his internal organs had shifted.
Yu Lin clutched his chest and took a few breaths, slowly walking toward Xu Ze’an, who was three meters away.
He had many questions since he first received the worldline.
Why was Lin Zhou willing to chase after Xie Zhirang for so many years, going through fire and water without hesitation, even if he received no response and even if Xie Zhirang chose someone else in the end?
Why was Xie Zhirang willing to be controlled, toyed with, and abandoned by Xu Ze’an? Even though he struggled in pain, he ultimately insisted on returning to his side.
Yu Lin could not understand “unforgettable” love and hate. He simply felt that everyone on this worldline had something wrong with their heads, and he had no intention of being the Lin Zhou who allowed himself to be slaughtered.
“That kick was to pay you back. I don’t like being looked down upon. It’s very impolite.” Yu Lin’s voice was still trembling, and his muscles were shaking from shaking off the fear.
His well-defined fingers trembled as they grabbed Xu Ze’an’s hair, but the cold back of his hand decisively struck the neck.
At the moment he lost consciousness, Xu Ze’an only heard Yu Lin’s indifferent voice. “After hearing you say so much, I thought Alphas were very powerful. But looking at it now, it seems you are nothing special. You little piece of trash.”
007 never expected that the Yu Lin who was lying weakly on the ground just now would suddenly explode. It said in shock, “What are you doing?”
Yu Lin stroked the back of Xu Ze’an’s neck, touching the unfamiliar Alpha gland. An expression of surprise and curiosity appeared on his face. He looked exactly like someone who, after slaughtering a chicken or a duck, still wanted to study where to bleed it from.
His voice was light and slow, like a ghost’s whisper. “I’m sorry. I don’t really like this script.”
007 could not help but remember the terror it experienced in the previous world.
When Yu Lin was first thrown into the Affectionate Male Lead System, the monitoring data in the background clamored together, and the warning lights in the control room flashed wildly. The blue line representing mental values was like a roller coaster, more winding than the twists of a river.
While 007 was tremblingly transmitting the worldline into his mind, Yu Lin had snapped the Ghost Groom’s neck.
His long black hair flowed down, and a set of phoenix crown and robes made him look like a beautiful ghost coming for a life. He raised his hand and wiped the blood from his face, leaving a bold stroke of bright red blood on his pale skin.
Suddenly, Yu Lin looked up and smiled shallowly, a murderous aura rising between his brows. “I’m sorry. I’m most afraid of ghosts. Can I skip this mission?”
The mental threshold directly broke the upper limit. The death of the core NPC caused the entire system to begin collapsing, scaring 007 into logging out on the spot.
If his superior had not appeared in time to soothe the manic Yu Lin, 007 felt that the powerful mental force would have strangled it directly.
The man who rushed into the system did not have time to hide his image with data. His overcoat still carried the wind and snow of winter. He raised his hand to clasp Yu Lin’s tense wrist while his other hand gently stroked the back of Yu Lin’s neck. He lowered his head to meet his eyes.
“Yu Lin, don’t be afraid. It’s just a dream.”
Thus, all the murderous aura was completely dissolved by the biting wind and snow.
But now, that superior had only been gone for a short while. Why did Yu Lin seem to be losing control again?
