Chapter 9: Entertainment Industry Arc
For the sake of Ning Yunqing’s future, Yin Fengxuan continued to play the game of “pretenders” in public. They rarely spoke on set. Aside from clever people like the assistant director, everyone else assumed the two had had a falling out.
Many people, both openly and secretly, advised Ning Yunqing to soften her stance and say some nice things to coax Yin Fengxuan back. On such occasions, Ning Yunqing would thank them one by one, then pull Yin Fengxuan to a secluded corner to flirt with her.
While they grew more intimate by the day, to outsiders, their relationship seemed lukewarm. Finally, the day came when Ning Yunqing’s scenes were finished. The crew offered congratulations and expressed their reluctance to see her go. Ning Yunqing bowed slightly, thanking them with a smile.
Someone suggested she treat everyone to dinner. Since she was broke, she looked toward Yin Fengxuan, who nodded in agreement. The crew cheered, and Ning Yunqing smiled as well; she had hoped to get Yin Fengxuan a little tipsy at the party so she could finally “become official.” In the end, it remained just a dream.
Yin Fengxuan seemed to have taken a shot of adrenaline that day, working from 5:00 AM straight through until 3:00 AM the next morning. By the time they wrapped, everyone was so exhausted they couldn’t even think about a party.
Ning Yunqing gave a helpless smile. Once they returned to the hotel, she poured a glass of milk for Yin Fengxuan. Seeing the fatigue on the director’s face, she stood behind her and massaged her shoulders. “Was it worth pushing yourself that hard just to avoid a dinner party?”
Yin Fengxuan looked back at her. “Without a penny to your name, you still want to treat people? Were you planning on selling yourself to settle the bill?”
Ning Yunqing leaned down, pressing her cheek against Yin Fengxuan’s. She rubbed against her gently and whispered, “Mhm. If it comes to that, I’ll sell myself to you, Boss.”
“…” Yin Fengxuan disliked that title. She cast a glance at Ning Yunqing, gave a light huff, and picked up the milk. She wondered when this girl had developed such a flirtatious heart beneath her pure exterior. Taking a sip, she said flatly, “With your technique, I wouldn’t even take you as a maid. This massage isn’t comfortable at all.” Despite her words, her eyes gradually drifted shut, her face the picture of pure enjoyment. Ning Yunqing bit her lip to hide a smile.
Seeing no response, Yin Fengxuan opened her eyes after fifteen minutes. “Your hands look like they’ve run out of strength. Go back and sleep.”
Ning Yunqing didn’t move. Yin Fengxuan glanced at her, wondering if the child wanted to sleep in her bed.
In truth, Ning Yunqing always wanted to sleep with her, but this time there was another reason. She asked hesitantly, “Fengxuan, my scenes are wrapped. Does that mean I can’t come to the set every day anymore?”
It was true that someone whose role was finished would attract gossip if they hung around the set every day. Yin Fengxuan felt she had a point, but sensed there was a hidden meaning. She asked tentatively, “You want to leave me?”
Her tone and expression carried a distinct hint of a threat. Ning Yunqing laughed inwardly but replied with a bashful look, “I… I didn’t mean that. I just feel that if I stay here without a reason, it will cause rumors for you.”
Yin Fengxuan caught the subtext. She arched an eyebrow. “What kind of ‘reason’ do you want?”
Ning Yunqing stammered and remained silent. Yin Fengxuan gave a dry laugh; becoming official wasn’t going to be that easy. She huffed, “Can’t say it? Then just stay here quietly. You don’t have a cent; where would you go? Home?”
Ning Yunqing had actually considered going home to give Ning Erbai another beating, but for her beauty’s sake, she shook her head. “Fengxuan, you know what my home is like. I…”
Thinking of that scumbag father made Yin Fengxuan angry, and she felt a surge of pity for the girl. She took Ning Yunqing’s hand in hers, her voice softening. “I know your concerns. Aren’t you taking the Gaokao? How about I hire a tutor? You can stay here during the day and study with her. As for the evenings… we’ll see.”
To someone like Ning Yunqing, who could build biochemical weapons, the Gaokao was as simple as single-digit addition. What she wanted was physical contact and deeper intimacy with Yin Fengxuan. A tutor was an unnecessary variable that might disrupt the plot. She shook her head and murmured, “No need, I feel pretty good studying on my own.”
Seeing Yin Fengxuan look displeased, Ning Yunqing shook her arm gently. “Fengxuan, it won’t be long until the whole crew wraps. I’ll just wait for you here, okay? There’s a kitchen here—I’ll cook and wait for you to come home at night.”
She’s quite the ‘virtuous wife’ type. Fooled by Ning Yunqing’s obedience, Yin Fengxuan gave a soft “Mm” in agreement.
Busy with the crew during the day and enjoying Ning Yunqing’s care at night, the days passed. However, Yin Fengxuan stubbornly refused to take the next step. Eventually, the entire crew wrapped, and the film entered post-production. It was time to leave the hotel. She could go home, but what about the girl? Should she take her along?
“Fengxuan, dinner is ready. Come eat.” Just as she was thinking, she saw Ning Yunqing in an apron, smiling at her. She really is a perfect candidate to bring home. Yin Fengxuan replied with an “Mm” and walked to the dining area. Looking at the home-cooked dishes, she asked casually, “The shoot is over and I’m heading home. Are you coming?”
Continued cohabitation? Ning Yunqing smiled radiantly. “I am.”
“Don’t get excited too soon. I’m only taking you in because I pity you for having nowhere to go. You still have to pay rent.” Yin Fengxuan’s lips tilted up. Ning Yunqing knew her “tsundere” habit was acting up and didn’t mind. She joked, “I’ll pay my ‘debt’ with my body…”
Suggestive scenes played in Yin Fengxuan’s mind, making her blush. She was about to scold the girl when Ning Yunqing continued: “Once I’m at your house, I’ll do your laundry and cooking. I’ll make sure you’re well-fed and pampered.”
Are you raising a son? Yin Fengxuan shot her a side-glance. “If I get fat, I’m kicking you out.”
Ning Yunqing covered her mouth to hide a laugh. Her Fengxuan was so adorably dishonest.
As Yin Fengxuan’s half-brother and CEO of Shihua Shadows, Yin Ziming naturally received word of her return through his intelligence network. Upon learning that Ning Yunqing was now living with his sister, Yin Ziming smashed a glass in fury. His unrequited obsession and longing for Ning Yunqing only intensified. He glanced at the trembling Ding Xiaoyao beside him and felt a trace of bitterness; Xiaoyao was nice, but she wasn’t the one his heart truly wanted. He stood up and headed for the door. Ding Xiaoyao grabbed him, asking worriedly, “Ziming, where are you going?”
Yin Ziming said without looking back, “I’m going out. I’ll have the driver take you home in a bit.”
Ding Xiaoyao let go. She looked back at the computer screen—at a candid photo of Ning Yunqing that hadn’t been closed—and narrowed her eyes, gritting her teeth. “Ning Yunqing!”
“Achoo!” Ning Yunqing, who was currently at Yin Fengxuan’s house researching what to cook for dinner, let out a sneeze. She figured her Fengxuan must be thinking about her. With a smile, she cracked an egg into a bowl. Just as she was about to whisk it, the doorbell rang.
The timing was a bit earlier than Yin Fengxuan’s usual return. Combined with the sneeze, Ning Yunqing thought Yin Fengxuan had fallen in love with the aroma of her cooking and couldn’t help coming home early. Putting down the utensils, she walked toward the door with a smile. Before she even reached it, her smile vanished. After many missions, her hearing was far beyond a normal person’s; she could clearly hear the heavy breathing of a man outside. Without looking, she knew the plot-bound Young Master Yin had arrived.
It seems this Young Master Yin doesn’t have a Soul from the God Space inside him. The first world is truly pitiably simple. Ning Yunqing curled her lips, went back to grab a ceramic kitchen knife, and walked out with a smile. As soon as the door opened, she was rewarded with the sight of the Young Master’s face shifting from joy to sheer terror. Holding the knife, she tilted her head and gave a gentle, lovely laugh. “Young Master Yin? Are you looking for Fengxuan?”
I’m looking for you. The words died in Yin Ziming’s throat as he stared at the sharp blade. He shrank back. “You… you’re living here?”
Ning Yunqing replied, “Mhm. Fengxuan isn’t back yet. Do you want to come in and wait for her?”
Yin Ziming desperately wanted to say yes, but Ning Yunqing didn’t lower the knife. It gave him the feeling that if he stepped inside, the blade would come down on him. The sensation made his skin crawl. “I… I’ll just wait here,” he stammered. “Are you… cooking?”
Ning Yunqing gave an “Mm” and, without giving him a chance to respond, she turned around. “Young Master Yin just reminded me—I have soup on the stove. I need to go check the pot.” With that, she unceremoniously slammed the door.
Standing outside, Yin Ziming didn’t know whether to knock or leave. Just as he hesitated and raised his hand, he heard Yin Fengxuan’s voice behind him: “What are you doing here?”
Yin Ziming frowned and turned around. “Just passing by and decided to stop in.”
Yin Fengxuan didn’t believe a word. “Then you can leave now.” As she reached for the door, Yin Ziming stopped her. “Wait, Ning Yunqing… she’s staying with you?”
Yin Fengxuan looked at him sideways. “I believe she has nothing to do with you anymore?”
Yin Ziming’s frown deepened. “Why so hostile? I’m not trying to hurt her. If she has nowhere to stay, I can help—I’ll give her an apartment.”
How generous. Spendthrift. Yin Fengxuan glared at him. “No need. I’ve signed her; she’s part of my studio now. I’ll arrange her accommodation. You can go now.” Bypassing him, she walked to the door, which Ning Yunqing happened to open at that moment. “Fengxuan, you’re back! I’m cooking, dinner will be ready soon.”
“Good,” Yin Fengxuan replied with a smile.
Seeing the two of them treat him like thin air, Yin Ziming’s pride couldn’t take it. He turned and left, feeling empty. Once upon a time, Ning Yunqing had treated him with such gentle words and smiles; why had everything changed? He slammed his fist against the steering wheel and gritted his teeth. “Why? Why doesn’t she need to rely on me?! I don’t believe it. She’s just a young girl from a poor family. Right… she has a scumbag for a father…”
A sinister smile spread across Yin Ziming’s face. He could already see the beautiful scene of Ning Yunqing running to him to beg for help. “Ning Yunqing, let’s see you try to escape this time.”
June arrived, and the Gaokao was fast approaching. Ning Yunqing didn’t bury her head in textbooks. While the exam was a life-changing turning point for ordinary kids, for her, it was merely a tool a simple way to slap the faces of meddlers and shut them up. Right now, she was looking at a cookbook, wondering what to make for Yin Fengxuan.
“Sweet and sour ribs, cherry pork, white fungus and lily bulb soup… is that too sweet?” She hesitated, then smiled. “Fengxuan likes sweets, so she should enjoy these. But the combination is a bit rich. I’ll add ‘Di San Xian’ (sauteed vegetables) and crab roe tofu to balance it out.” As she prepared to head out for ingredients, the landline rang.
It was an unfamiliar voice: “Ning Yunqing, your old man is in our hands. If you want him to live, bring ten million!” The caller hung up immediately after.
Ning Yunqing was speechless. They didn’t even give an address; where am I supposed to take the money? She gently replaced the receiver and walked out with a smile. When she returned, the phone was ringing again. She glanced at the number; it was the same one. With an unwavering smile, she took the receiver off the hook and set it aside before taking her grocery haul into the kitchen.
Just as the food was ready, Yin Fengxuan returned. She looked upset and immediately asked, “Did that brat come looking for you?”
Ning Yunqing shook her head. Yin Fengxuan saw the four dishes and soup laid out and her lips tilted up. Seeing Ning Yunqing coming over to claim her praise, the director went to the bedroom to change into loungewear. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed the phone was off the hook.
She finally realized why the line had been busy when she tried to call home earlier; she had thought Yin Ziming was harassing the girl again, but it was just a “careless mistake.” She placed the receiver back on the base. The moment she did, it rang.
“Don’t pick it up,” Ning Yunqing called out from the dining room, but Yin Fengxuan had already answered. “Who is this?” she asked coldly.
There was a pause on the other end. Then a voice spat, “Ning Yunqing, you didn’t call the police, did you? I’m telling you, if you called them, we’ll kill him!” After some noise, another man’s voice cried out, “Yunqing! Yunqing, save your father! If you don’t bring the money, I’m going to die!”
