Chapter 8: Entertainment Industry Arc
Early morning light filtered through the mist. On the set of Morning Dew, staff members were already moving equipment and chatting idly.
“Have you guys noticed Director Yin seems a bit off lately?” a stagehand carrying a ladder asked. A prop person nearby chimed in, “Yeah, she is a bit strange. She seems dissatisfied with Goddess Ning recently. Her attitude is cold and distant; she won’t even look her in the eye.”
“Eh, eh, I noticed that too! Director Yin makes eye contact with all the other actors, but she completely ignores Goddess Ning. Every time the Goddess approaches, she avoids her.”
The assistant director, hearing this, strode over in her small high heels. She raised her wrist and smacked each of them with a stack of printed papers. “Chatting before the equipment is even set up! And even when you gossip, you get it all wrong. What a bunch of straight men.”
The group looked at her curiously, but the assistant director, who was kind-hearted and disliked spreading rumors, glared them back into silence. Catching a glimpse of the two subjects of the conversation arriving, she said flatly, “Alright, those two are here. Study them silently yourselves.”
All eyes turned toward the duo walking slowly toward them. Yin Fengxuan led the way with Ning Yunqing following behind. When greeted, both responded with smiles, though Yin Fengxuan’s was faint while Ning Yunqing’s was soft. As they walked, Yin Fengxuan suddenly stopped and, without looking back, commanded, “Go prepare for today’s scenes.”
“Okay,” Ning Yunqing replied, undeterred. She gave a faint smile and turned toward the dressing room.
Yin Fengxuan let out a secret sigh of relief. That was close. She had almost reached out to hold her hand in public. Thinking back to what happened a few nights ago, her expression became complicated. That night, Ning Yunqing had pressed against her, caressing her face, her warm fragrance wafting over her nose, leaving Yin Fengxuan mesmerized. Looking at those cherry-pink lips moving in front of her, her mind went blank; she closed her eyes and kissed her.
Only after the kiss did she snap back to reality. She turned her head away to hide her face, noticing in the mirror that both of them were flushed. She frowned inwardly: I lost control. What now? Should I take this chance to progress further? But what does she mean by this?
“You…” Ning Yunqing was no longer playful. Her hands were twisted together, and her face was a deep, stifled red. This actually startled Yin Fengxuan. “Are you okay?”
Ning Yunqing shook her head, murmuring in a voice as faint as a mosquito, “My… my first kiss is gone.”
“…” Yin Fengxuan was even more shocked. She began to feel that she wasn’t just “an old cow eating tender grass,” but a total beast! Placing a hand gently on Ning Yunqing’s shoulder, she stammered, “I…”
Ning Yunqing shook her head, lifting her face to reveal a thin smile. “I know you didn’t mean it. You just happened to look up at the wrong time. It’s my fault. I wanted to test the feeling of the character and used you to practice. I’m sorry.”
Eh? Yin Fengxuan was dazed, but since the girl had given her a way out, she took it. “It’s fine. We’re even then.” However, seeing the girl’s forced smile, her heart felt heavy. As Ning Yunqing turned to leave, she suddenly called her back. “You can call me Fengxuan—just not in front of outsiders. I’ll help you arrange for next year’s Gaokao.”
Ning Yunqing walked back to her and lowered her head slightly. “Thank you. But this year’s exam will be fine. Well then… Fengxuan, goodnight.”
The warm air brushed against her ear. Yin Fengxuan found that gentle voice almost unbearable. Ning Yunqing had intentionally lowered her pitch, a tone that made it feel like she was flirting. What exactly does this girl mean? Was she just being teased again by this barely-adult younger sister?
She felt frustrated and a bit angry at Ning Yunqing’s attitude: To flirt and then run away she needs a lesson! Is Yin Fengxuan someone you can just flirt with for free? Just wait, I’ll teach you a lesson. That was the plan, but the reality was that every time she saw Ning Yunqing the next morning, she thought of that kiss.
She didn’t dislike it; in fact, she liked it. It was a strange sensation, as if something deep in her heart had been awakened, carving a mark in an unknown territory of her soul a mark that craved more. Not just her lips, but her brows, her eyes, her hands, her everything.
This is terrifying! I’m losing my professional ethics! Yin Fengxuan did not allow any flaws in her films, nor did she allow herself to make mistakes that would affect her standard. She began to avoid Ning Yunqing, but it was like burying her head in the sand. Ning Yunqing was in her line of sight almost every second, nearly driving her crazy. She thought she should take a few days off to see a psychologist.
But before she could see a doctor, Yin Fengxuan fell into Ning Yunqing’s trap once again.
“Cut! Pass! It’s noon, everyone take a break.” After a busy morning, Yin Fengxuan paused the shoot. Ning Yunqing walked over and asked softly, “Director Yin, want to have lunch together?”
Yin Fengxuan stared at the monitor, refusing to look at her. “No need. You go ahead.”
Ning Yunqing glanced at the screen and smiled. “Okay. Don’t work too hard; make sure to rest.”
Yin Fengxuan gave a dismissive “Mm,” her eyes fixed on the girl on the screen sometimes happy, sometimes sad. Her heart was pounding, but she didn’t let it show, struggling to maintain her composure.
That night, back at the hotel, Yin Fengxuan had just changed her clothes when she heard a knock. The scene from the other night flashed back. She took a deep breath and said flatly, “Come in.”
Ning Yunqing pushed the door open, stood before her with her hands clasped, and looked at her piteously. “Fengxuan… do you… do you hate me?”
Yin Fengxuan’s heart skipped a beat. She admitted she hadn’t liked Ning Yunqing much at first, but after spending time together, she found the girl increasingly pleasing to the eye. She even found her fickle personality quite cute. Seeing those autumn-water eyes shimmering with a faint mist, she shook her head compassionately.
Ning Yunqing’s eyes crinkled into a smile, which, paired with her teary gaze, was incredibly endearing. She asked, “Then… do you like me?”
Yin Fengxuan froze. Staring into those expectant eyes, she suddenly gave a dry laugh. She had almost fallen for the girl’s trick! This “naughty child” was clearly fishing for a confession, using vulnerability as a disguise! She shook her head and glanced at her with eyes full of laughter. “Testing your acting on me again?”
Ning Yunqing looked at her in confusion, her hands clasped with guilt. “Fengxuan, I didn’t mean it last time. I’m sorry.”
I’d be a fool to believe you. You’re a black rabbit in a weakling’s skin! Yin Fengxuan’s lips curled into a smirk. “I know. I didn’t mean it either. I’m sorry.”
Hm? I’ve been found out? Ning Yunqing laughed inwardly, but she maintained her obedient act, saying innocently, “I don’t blame you, I…”
Yin Fengxuan stood up and patted her head to cut her off. “I don’t blame you either. Alright, weren’t you going to take the Gaokao? Have you memorized your vocabulary? Have you finished the ‘Five-Three’ mock exams? If not, stop overthinking and go back to study!”
Ning Yunqing covered her forehead, looking at her piteously. “But… but I feel like you’ve been avoiding me lately.” Suddenly, she stepped closer, grabbed Yin Fengxuan’s hand, and pressed her body against her.
They were inches apart. Yin Fengxuan’s heart felt like it was on fire. Smelling the girl’s breath, her gaze slid down to those slightly upturned lips. She couldn’t help herself—she leaned in and kissed her again.
“…” Ning Yunqing had a smile on her lips.
“…” Yin Fengxuan fell into silence. To use a vulgar term, she was “gobsmacked.” She actually couldn’t resist the temptation and had proactively “nibbled on the tender grass” again. Looking at the culprit who was now hanging her head, Yin Fengxuan felt helpless. Her twenty-plus years of self-restraint had vanished without a trace the moment she met this girl.
“Yunqing.” The form of address changed; no longer was it the elder-like “Xiao Ning.” Ning Yunqing’s hidden smile was subtle. “Mm?”
Yin Fengxuan sighed, lifting the girl’s face to make her look at her. “If I say I didn’t mean it this time either, I’m afraid you won’t believe me, right?”
Ning Yunqing thought: I believe it—I’m the one who flirted. Of course, her face remained that of a frightened “white rabbit.”
Yin Fengxuan frowned. The girl looked like she was being bullied, which only increased her sense of guilt. She thought for a while, then took a deep breath as if making a decision. “Yunqing, I have an idea. How about this: I’ll give you two choices.”
Ning Yunqing watched her quietly. Yin Fengxuan’s hand hadn’t moved from her face. If not for the mission constraints, she really wanted to pin the woman against the wall and kiss her deeply. She heard Yin Fengxuan say softly, “To make up for my rude behavior, I’ll double your salary, and we’ll pretend this never happened.”
Ning Yunqing frowned slightly. Yin Fengxuan caught this reaction and suddenly felt a sense of relief. The hand supporting her chin slowly began to caress Ning Yunqing’s cheek. She smiled, her voice lingering with a hint of seductiveness. “Or… we could try interacting with a different status?”
Exactly what I wanted. Ning Yunqing didn’t rush to answer. She looked away from Yin Fengxuan as if deep in thought. As the seconds ticked by, Yin Fengxuan’s heart grew restless, and her palms began to sweat. Finally, the girl turned her head back and looked at her timidly. Yin Fengxuan’s heart sank; she let her hand drop, but her voice remained gentle. “Don’t feel pressured. Say whatever you want to say. I won’t take away your role because of this.”
Ning Yunqing smiled. She grabbed Yin Fengxuan’s hand and shook it gently. “Then, Boss, can I choose both?”
“…” Yin Fengxuan was stunned. Well then! She thought the girl didn’t want her, but it turned out she was being played again. What a bad girl. Her eyes turned cold as she put on a stern face. Ning Yunqing looked startled and slowly released her hand, but just as she was about to pull away, Yin Fengxuan gripped it back and pulled her into her arms.
Ning Yunqing looked up to see Yin Fengxuan watching her with a smile. “How many times have I told you? Don’t call me Boss. You just won’t remember.” She lightly pinched Ning Yunqing’s cheek and teased, “You little girl, you’re quite greedy—wanting both the money and the beauty.”
Ning Yunqing’s face turned red (as per the setting). Seeing this, Yin Fengxuan’s smile widened. “Alright, since you don’t object to us dating, I’ll treat it as a gift and grant your request.”
“Thank you, Boss,” Ning Yunqing said obediently.
Yin Fengxuan frowned. Calling me Boss again. “I said, don’t call me Boss. Now look what you’ve done you’ve made me unhappy. What if I don’t want to agree anymore?”
Ning Yunqing’s eyes widened, filled with both surprise and fear. I actually scared her, Yin Fengxuan thought. She burst out laughing, changing the pinch to a soft rub. “Relax. You’re so cute; I couldn’t bear to drive you away.” Her tone then shifted. “However, since you’ve been disobedient so many times, I won’t let it slide so easily. I’ll grant both your choices, but when you officially ‘become permanent’ and how much your salary is… that will all depend on my mood, okay?”
Ning Yunqing nodded, appearing crestfallen. Yin Fengxuan smiled and patted her. “Good girl. Now go back and study.”
Ning Yunqing blinked and retreated obediently. Watching the girl’s slightly dejected back, Yin Fengxuan’s lips curled into a smile. With Ning Yunqing’s acting skills and looks, she was bound to become a star sooner or later. In the future, her girl would meet all kinds of people; she was worried this unique, pure girl would be corrupted by the industry or stolen by someone else.
Ning Yunqing belonged to her, Yin Fengxuan. She was going to tie this little girl down tightly.
