Chapter 6: Entertainment Industry Arc
As she stepped out of the elevator, Ning Yunqing saw Ning Erbai with his back to her, howling at the top of his lungs. She caught sight of the shattered beer bottle fragments on the ground. A cruel thought flickered through her mind, but it was immediately chased away by a warning siren in her head.
As a member of the God Space, she could not violate the rules of the game. The previous warning was to remind her that pushing Ning Erbai onto the shards to kill him would violate the bottom line of the female lead’s persona. The protagonist was a pure “white lotus”; she could not commit parricide. This left Ning Yunqing quite dissatisfied. She furrowed her brows, thinking that while she couldn’t kill him, she could certainly hate him and giving him a proper lesson should be no problem at all.
“Sir, if you continue to make a scene, we will have to call security,” the receptionist said, looking at the furious man with a hint of fear.
Ning Erbai ignored her, slammed the desk again, spat on the floor, and turned around just as Ning Yunqing stepped out from the elevator. Looking at her as if she were a debtor who had owed him for a century, he glared and stomped over. “You little brat!” His thick arm swung up as he aimed a slap at Ning Yunqing’s face.
Having learned from the last time, Ning Yunqing had made sure to eat her fill every meal. Using the reflexes honed from years of playing villain roles, she grabbed his wrist before his hand could connect. Unfortunately, the restrictive power of her character persona was too strong; after holding him for a moment, Ning Erbai broke free. His hand continued toward her as he cursed, “You f***ing dared to lock the door on me! I almost starved to death in there!”
What a pity, Ning Yunqing thought, furrowing her brows. Before the man’s hand could make intimate contact with her face, she took two steps back. Ning Erbai, failing to react to her sudden retreat, stumbled forward from the momentum of his own swing.
Ning Yunqing cast a cold glance at his unremarkable face, silently complaining that this was indeed a novel world otherwise, how could someone like Ning Erbai produce a girl as exquisite as her? Her lips twitched slightly as she looked at his nose, which was red again from alcohol despite the swelling having gone down. She asked without a trace of emotion, “What do you want?”
Ning Erbai froze for a moment. He had never seen his daughter like this her attitude was detached, devoid of fear, and businesslike. This worried him. Had his “purse” grown wings and prepared to fly away? That wouldn’t do! Staring wide-eyed and fierce at his daughter or rather, his ATM he shouted, “You found a Young Master and forgot your old man?!
Don’t even think about it! Without me, would you even know Young Master Yin?” He was implying that if he hadn’t forced her to pose as a film student, the Young Master wouldn’t have looked at her.
Ning Yunqing almost laughed, but the part that made her roll her eyes was yet to come. Ning Erbai cut straight to the point: “I heard Young Master Yin arranged a role for you. You must have gotten a lot of money, right?”
This was the scene Yin Fengxuan witnessed as she stepped out of the elevator: a burly man standing over Ning Yunqing, reaching out a rough hand for money. It made her uncomfortable. Frowning slightly, she intended to walk over but stopped herself. She heard Ning Yunqing’s response.
The young girl, looking even more slender next to the man, tilted her head up and confronted him fearlessly: “You only think of me as your daughter when you’re out of money? Let me ask you, I met Young Master Yin because he almost hit me with his car. You say I wouldn’t know him without you—did you tell him to hit me? Are you trying to murder your own daughter?”
Ning Yunqing’s voice was flat, but the onlookers were stunned. No wonder she looked familiar; she was the girl from today’s trending searches. They were in for some juicy gossip. Tsk tsk, looks like she’s stuck with a scumbag father.
Hearing people hushing him, Ning Erbai panicked. He glared angrily at the crowd before turning his most vicious look back to his daughter. “You useless girl! Stop talking nonsense! If Young Master Yin hadn’t ‘taken care’ of you, could you afford to stay in a hotel like this? If you aren’t afraid of losing face, then keep making a scene!”
Who exactly is the one losing face here? Ning Yunqing felt helpless. She looked at her “cheap” scumbag father with an expressionless face, her lips moving slightly. “I think I need to tell you a few things. One: my staying here has nothing to do with Young Master Yin. Two: he didn’t give me this role.
Three: because you kept forcing me to hang around the Film Academy, Young Master Yin thinks I’m a fraud. But that’s fine; I’ve cleared it up with him. It was a misunderstanding, and I won’t be contacting him again. Four—”
Her expression turned sharp, and she lowered her voice. “Don’t you just want money? Even without Yin Ziming, I can give it to you.” She pulled the stack of bills Yin Fengxuan had given her from her pocket. With a flash of mockery in her eyes, she raised her hand and slammed the wad of cash against Ning Erbai’s face. Ning Erbai was shocked; he wanted to be angry, but he couldn’t stop his lips from curling into a grin.
Truly a slave to money. Ning Yunqing looked at him with disdain. Watching Ning Erbai squatting on the floor to pick up the bills, she said coldly, “None of this came from Young Master Yin. If you want more, go home and stay there. Don’t interfere with my work. If my career is ruined, you won’t get a single cent.”
Ning Erbai looked up, and meeting Ning Yunqing’s eyes, he involuntarily shivered. It was incredible that a man over 180cm tall would be afraid of a little girl. It must be the money, he told himself. Once he rationalized it, he nodded, picked up the cash, cursed at the onlookers, and left with the money stuffed in his pocket.
Before Ning Erbai had even left the lobby, Ning Yunqing headed toward the elevator. Seeing Yin Fengxuan standing there, she wasn’t surprised at all. She simply apologized in a low voice, “I’m sorry you had to see that joke.”
Yin Fengxuan asked, “Do you plan on giving him all the money you earn?”
Ning Yunqing looked up. Seeing that the director didn’t expect an explanation for the scene, she replied honestly, “Of course not.”
Yin Fengxuan’s lips curved slightly, and she didn’t pry further. They returned to the room. Yin Fengxuan sat on the sofa, legs crossed, looking at Ning Yunqing, who stood to the side with her head down to hide her bashfulness. She said teasingly, “The money I gave you was for buying props. Now that you’ve spent it elsewhere, what are we going to do?”
Ning Yunqing knew Fengxuan was teasing her and played along. Biting her lower lip, she said with difficulty, “I’m sorry, Director Yin. I… I will pay you back later.”
Yin Fengxuan gave a somewhat mischievous smile, quietly observing the girl. She had been all claws and teeth in front of her scumbag father, yet here she was, as obedient as a kitten. It was nice. Rest her chin in her hand, she tapped her cheek with her finger.
While admiring Ning Yunqing’s sweetness, she let her “wicked” thoughts run: “Earlier, to prove that man’s words were wrong, you used staying here and your role as examples. Both of those were given to you by me. Looking at it that way, does that mean I’m the one keeping you?”
Although her words sounded abrasive, Yin Fengxuan was actually testing the waters to see Ning Yunqing’s attitude toward her. Having grown up overseas and studied art, she wasn’t conservative regarding sexual orientation. However, she was surprised to find herself falling for a young girl after twenty-some years. If the other party had no interest in her, she would feel quite defeated. For safety’s sake, she had to test her.
Ning Yunqing, being a seasoned “villain” actress, saw through this little trick immediately. Laughing inwardly, she looked up and called out pleasingly, “Boss.”
Yin Fengxuan was stunned. The girl resisted Yin Ziming’s patronage but accepted the idea so readily from her. This meant she was much more important to the girl than Yin Ziming was. She smiled and beckoned Ning Yunqing to sit down. “Don’t call me that, it sounds weird. I was just teasing you.”
Ning Yunqing sat down beside her with a serene smile. “I know. You’re different from them.”
A flutter went through Yin Fengxuan’s heart. She took a sip of water to hide it, but Ning Yunqing’s next words made her cough. Ning Yunqing said, “But I’m eating your food, staying in your room, and waiting for your salary. In that sense, you really are my boss.”
But ‘Boss’ sounds like a balding, middle-aged fat man, Yin Fengxuan thought, frowning. Ning Yunqing considerately patted her back. Yin Fengxuan glanced back at the girl’s gentle smile, and her voice softened. “Don’t call me ‘Boss,’ and stop using the formal ‘You’ ($您$). It makes me sound old. I don’t have that many rules, and I don’t care about formalities. If you’re grateful, just act well for me.”
“Okay. Fengxuan.” Those last two words brushed past Yin Fengxuan’s ear like a breeze. By the time Yin Fengxuan snapped out of it, Ning Yunqing had already stood up and waved at her. “To prepare for tomorrow’s shoot, I’m going to sleep first. You should rest early too. Goodnight, Director Yin.”
The door closed softly. Yin Fengxuan stared ahead, thinking about those words that had just drifted past her ear. She felt like she had just been flirted with by a young girl.
How bold. Her lips curled into a smile that showed no anger. She went to her bedroom and called the front desk. “Send me the security footage of Ning Yunqing’s encounter with that man earlier.”
After the farce, everything returned to normal. A week later, the male lead of this world, Yin Ziming, brought a tall girl along, diligently following his scripted plot.
“Sis!” Yin Ziming waved excitedly. Seeing Ning Yunqing standing beside Yin Fengxuan, his eyes immediately filled with disdain. “Tsk.” He pulled the girl forward and introduced her to Yin Fengxuan. “Sis, didn’t I tell you I’d find you a new lead? Why are you still using that fake? Here, look this is Ding Xiaoyao, a legitimate second-year student from the Film Academy. Pretty, right?”
Yin Fengxuan gave a cold, brief glance, let out a hum from her nose, turned around, and continued discussing the plot with Ning Yunqing.
Yin Ziming was angry. He hadn’t expected the “fraud” to be so composed she didn’t even spare him a glance! Glaring at Ning Yunqing, he interrupted again, “Sis, just fire the fake. Mine is better than her.”
Yin Fengxuan looked at Ning Yunqing, who remained calm. She thought the girl was remarkably steady. However, she couldn’t stand people telling her what to do. A breeze blew past, bringing a pungent scent not from Ning Yunqing, who was playing a miserable girl, but from Ding Xiaoyao.
Yin Fengxuan looked at Ding Xiaoyao. Although she wore light makeup and was dressed like a “good girl,” her aura couldn’t be hidden this little vixen was a specialist in gold-digging. How could she compare to her own female lead? Yin Fengxuan spoke nonchalantly, “Since you brought her, let’s have her try a scene. Yunqing, give her the script. Let her try the scene you’re about to film.”
