Chapter 41: Stepping Out
“Little Yunqing, is that my sister?” When Ning Yunqing arrived, she saw Kim Yo-wei engaged in a verbal battle with the three fools. Seeing her sister surrounded by the lunatics, Kim Yo-hyeon wanted to get out of the car in worry. Ning Yunqing frowned and stopped her, advising, “It is her. Wait a moment; look, your sister seems to be scolding them.”
“Sister is scolding people personally!” Yo-hyeon was shocked. She had never seen her sister deign to scold strangers before. Ning Yunqing opened the sunroof, making the voices outside even clearer.
“You keep saying she’s your daughter, yet you wouldn’t buy her clothes or let her go to school. Now that she’s succeeded through her own struggle, you want her to give all her money to your precious son. Honestly, what kind of bad luck did she have in her past lives to end up as your daughter?” Yo-wei continued her sarcasm. Company employees began to gather, looking at the Ning family with disdain. The finger-pointing was more than Zhu Cuihua could bear, and she erupted: “What do you know?! If it weren’t for her, would I have ended up in the countryside? It’s all her fault!”
“You went to the countryside because you gave birth to your precious Dashu. What does that have to do with Ning Xiaohua?” Yo-wei glared at her, her eyes simmering. “You created your own misfortune, yet you have the nerve to blame an innocent daughter. Touch your conscience—can it withstand this?!”
“Young lady, you…” Zhu Cuihua was stunned. Ning Fugui was the one who asked the question; he hadn’t expected this stranger to know their family history so well. He tried to speak, but Yo-wei cut him off: “Am I wrong? You claim to be good to your daughter and supported her schooling, but what happened? You didn’t pay a cent of tuition. You let your daughter work while studying as a teenager? She was in a boarding school; where was the opportunity to work?! If you didn’t want her to attend, just say so. To fail her and then demand her gratitude—aren’t you disgusted?”
“…” Ning Fugui was speechless, but Yo-wei grew even more agitated. “The son’s house is more important than the daughter’s life, isn’t it? No money for medicine, and after she’s dead, do you intend to eat ‘human blood buns’ (profit from her death)? Calling on your conscience was a waste; you don’t have such things! If I were you, I’d be too ashamed to show my face!”
Finished, Yo-wei’s eyes uncontrollably reddened. Realizing she had lost her composure, she turned on her high heels and walked into the building. Yo-hyeon hurried out of the car to chase her. Ning Yunqing snapped back to reality, gave the trio a pitying look, and walked into the crowd. “Are you looking for me?”
The Ning family looked up. Seeing their daughter, they wanted to surround her, but the previous woman’s words left them feeling ashamed and dazed. Ning Yunqing smiled mockingly, pulling out a stack of cash and handing it to Ning Dashu. “You know better than I do how you treated me over the years. I’ve paid back every cent of the cost of raising me. This stack is for your bus fare home. My money isn’t blown in by the wind; I don’t have enough to waste on you. If you don’t want things to get too ugly, take the elders back. Perhaps I’ll come home to visit during the holidays.”
Dashu was stunned by the beauty of his long-lost sister. He clutched the money, hesitating: “But Sis, what about my house?”
“Earn it yourself, of course,” Ning Yunqing said coldly. “You aren’t my son; why should I supplement your household?”
“I’m your brother!” Dashu refused to give up, trying to push the money back. To him, accepting this money meant giving up the house, and he wasn’t stupid. The parents also looked at her with pleading eyes, their earlier fire extinguished. Ning Yunqing glanced at them before fixing her gaze on Dashu, chuckling, “Didn’t you boast that you’re a man and better than me because you went to school?”
Dashu felt humiliated, but for the sake of money, he ignored the onlookers and thudded to his knees. He slapped his own face while crying: “Sis, I know I was wrong. I’m sorry. Please forgive me. If you don’t forgive me, I won’t get up!”
Ning Fugui turned his back, unable to watch. Zhu Cuihua couldn’t bear to see her son suffer; she crouched beside him, wailing: “Shu’er, get up! Don’t be like this. Hua’er, even if we wronged you, we raised you. Do you have the heart to watch the three of us suffer?”
Ning Yunqing actually did have the heart; she wouldn’t feel a shred of pity even if Dashu beat himself to death. However, because of Yo-wei’s emotional outburst, the plot’s progress suddenly accelerated. Sensing time was running out, she opted for a civilized solution.
“Stop it. Don’t act in front of me.” She threw another small stack of cash on the floor, looking at her weeping, stupid brother with a sneer. “I’m not stupid. If I buy you a house, you’ll ask for a car. Then the house will be too small and you’ll want a villa, then a luxury car. I’m not a bank. If you think this travel money is too little, stay here. I’m going abroad in two days; suit yourselves.”
Leaving them behind, she walked into the building. She had to hurry. Entering the CEO’s office, she found Yo-wei with red eyes being comforted by Yo-hyeon. Seeing her, Yo-wei stroked her sister’s face and smiled: “I have something to discuss with Ning Yunqing. Go out for a moment.”
“Alright. I’ll come back to accompany Sister in a bit.” Yo-hyeon looked at Ning Yunqing and added, “Don’t make Sister unhappy,” before leaving.
Ning Yunqing sat down, studying the weary face. “Should I call you Sister, or Xiaohua?”
Yo-wei gave a bitter smile. “So, I was exposed after all. I’m not Ning Xiaohua, but my real name isn’t much better. Call me Sister; it’s worth the points I spent on this trip to be called Sister by the Great Ning.”
“You wrote your own story for me to travel through because you don’t actually hate me. You were lost and hoped I could inspire you?” Ning Yunqing stated plainly. Yo-wei sighed. “Yes. I wanted to see what the legend on the leaderboard would do. You didn’t disappoint me. But I disappointed myself. I came here five years before you to play this role, hoping to forget my past, but I underestimated myself. I can’t forget, and I can’t be ruthless. Am I a failure?”
Ning Yunqing smiled. “I knew something was odd about you, but I only realized your identity at the end. You weren’t bad; I’d give you a 70.”
“Great, I passed.” Yo-wei smiled. “Honestly, if I could, I’d stay as Kim Yo-wei forever. No biased parents, my own business, and lovely siblings. This life is wonderful.”
“It is, but it’s not reality. If I were you, I’d save enough points to go back and tell them exactly what you said today,” Ning Yunqing said calmly. Yo-wei nodded in gratitude. “I will.”
Ning Yunqing then asked about Yo-hyeon’s behavior during the past five years. Yo-wei noted that while she wasn’t always home, Yo-hyeon’s personality remained consistent until she met Ning Yunqing—though there were “small movements” from a certain point.
Ning Yunqing realized something. “I see. Thank you for going easy on me. If we meet again, I’ll return the favor.”
“No need,” Yo-wei said guiltily. “I let my emotions get the better of me just now and disrupted your plan, costing you points. I’m sorry.”
“It’s fine,” Ning Yunqing smiled. “Consider it a thank-you for taking care of Feng Xuan all these years.”
“Feng Xuan? The lover you’re looking for?” Yo-wei asked curiously. “Is she like Yo-hyeon?”
Thinking of Yo-hyeon’s dorky behavior, Ning Yunqing chuckled. “My Feng Xuan isn’t usually like that, but when she’s being ‘silly,’ she’s very similar to Yo-hyeon. I rarely see that side of her; I have to thank you for letting me enjoy the view for so long.”
The feeling of the soul being pulled away grew near. Ning Yunqing stood up and bid a hurried farewell. She ran to the next room and embraced Yo-hyeon. Yo-hyeon was worried. “What happened? Did something happen to Sister? Did she change her mind about us because of your parents?”
“No. I just wanted to hold you. Feng Xuan, do you remember me?”
“What ‘Feng Xuan’?” Yo-hyeon asked, confused. “Our company is ‘Feng-Xian,’ right?” She tapped Ning Yunqing’s head. “Is your brain broken?”
Ning Yunqing wasn’t disappointed. She kissed her softly. She believed Feng Xuan’s soul was in this body, whether restricted by system settings or a damaged spirit.
As the world began to warp, Ning Yunqing closed her eyes and spoke to the Master God: “I want to make a trade. I want Feng Xuan to remember me.”
“0527, what trade do you want to make?”
“I want her to remember me. I’m willing to give up half of my current points.”
“0527, you currently have 54 million points. Are you sure you want to spend 27 million for a moment of tenderness?”
“I am sure.”
The Master God calculated and replied: “Complete the bonus mission of the next world within the specified time, and you can spend 7 million points to have Yin Feng Xuan gradually recover her memory. Do you accept?”
Ning Yunqing accepted without hesitation.
The surroundings cleared. She appeared in a misty valley. Suddenly, a nine-foot-tall beast lunged from the bushes. Ning Yunqing tried to summon her sword, but her body was paralyzed by toxic gas. She was unable to move.
