Chapter 39: Stepping Out
“You—you’re saying that Boss Ning is Hua’er?” Zhu Cuihua grabbed the young man from the village committee by the arm, her eyes wide and her expression turning ferocious. Startled, the young man tilted his head and replied, “Yes, I saw Hua’er come out of the Village Chief’s office with my own eyes. I couldn’t be mistaken.”
“How is that possible…” Ning Fugui murmured. He patted his agitated wife and asked the young man, “Forgive us, Cuihua just misses our daughter and got a bit anxious. So, where is our Hua’er now?”
“She probably went back to the town’s guesthouse,” the young man replied. Terrified by the old couple’s reaction, he made up an excuse and fled.
“At the town guesthouse?” Ning Fugui pondered. Originally, he thought getting 60,000 yuan was a great deal for his family, but now that he knew the boss was his own daughter, the more he thought about it, the more he felt they had lost out. His daughter had actually distributed money to the villagers—that spendthrift child!
“Fugui, do you think this is true? Our Hua’er has become a big boss?” Zhu Cuihua was still in shock, but Ning Fugui had already begun to lead her: “Whether it is or isn’t, we have to go see. After all, she’s our own daughter.”
“Right! If it’s true, just watch me scold her. She actually only gave our family 60,000 yuan!” Zhu Cuihua rolled up her sleeves, pushed the tricycle out of the yard, and shouted, “Fugui, let’s go! Let’s go to town and see if that brat is really back!”
While the Ning couple hurried to the town guesthouse on their tricycle, Ning Yunqing was hosting the villagers who had helped her at a local restaurant. In addition to the renovation funds given to every household, Ning Yunqing gave these kind people extra tokens of gratitude.
The middle-aged female village teacher, who had once helped “Ning Xiaohua,” held a stack of cash. Though it was something she normally would value, it felt scorching in her hand. She knew better than anyone how hard Xiaohua had it. Such a top student, who should have attended a first-tier university, hadn’t even finished high school before venturing into the world of business. Who knew how much suffering she had endured? How could the teacher take this money?
“Hua’er,” the teacher pulled out six bills and pushed the thick stack back. “When I lent you money, I never expected you to pay it back. Now that you’ve made it, just give me 600. It wasn’t easy for you to struggle out there alone. I already have the 30,000 you gave me to start the farmhouse inn; I’m not short on money.”
Sitting beside her, Kim Yo-hyeon was moved. She pushed the money back before Ning Yunqing could. “Please don’t be so polite. Hua-hua has me now. Keep this money as a small token of my gratitude for taking care of her.”
“This…” The rural woman didn’t spend much time online; to her, “Lily” was just a flower. Hearing Yo-hyeon’s words, she only thought they were very close friends and didn’t suspect anything else. Seeing her hesitation, Yo-hyeon smiled and revealed her identity: “My name is Kim Yo-hyeon. I’m the fourth daughter of the Kim Group and Ning Yunqing’s—your Hua’er’s—partner. I’m not short on money, so you don’t need to pay me back.”
This girl is so sincere. The teacher laughed, and Ning Yunqing couldn’t help but chuckle. Patting her lover’s hand, she explained, “The money for the village road was provided by the Kim Group, which has a lot to do with Miss Kim here. She cares deeply about our village. You can think of this money as Miss Kim’s investment in the village’s construction.”
“Yes, Yunqing and I are family. Please, everyone, don’t treat us like strangers,” Yo-hyeon added with a smile.
The villagers present felt something was slightly odd, but they didn’t overthink it, smiling as they remarked, “This girl is truly kind-hearted. And beautiful, too.”
“It’s all thanks to her that our village can start tourism.”
“Exactly, we should thank her.”
“No, no, please don’t be polite. I’m just loving the house and its crow (loving her and everything associated with her),” Yo-hyeon said, feeling a bit shy from the praise. She looked at Ning Yunqing, who smiled and changed the subject: “I lied to everyone when I left the village, which was wrong of me. Please accept this money, or my heart will not be at peace.”
“Well… alright then.” Hesitantly, the villagers accepted the money.
After the dinner, Ning Yunqing saw the villagers off one by one and drove back to the town with Yo-hyeon. Looking at the simple, honest villagers, Yo-hyeon’s gaze grew increasingly tender: “No wonder you don’t care much for money; you have such a wonderful group of neighbors.”
“Mhm,” Ning Yunqing chuckled. Most of the villagers were good, but there were a few scumbags. Thinking of her “cheap” parents, a cold sneer appeared: It’s been this long; those two should be coming out to make a scene now, right?
Just as she expected, the Ning couple had arrived at the town government area. Zhu Cuihua wanted Ning Fugui to ride the tricycle straight in, but he refused, fearing it would cause trouble at a government-affiliated guesthouse. He spoke politely to the guard, “Comrade, my daughter is inside. I want to go see her.”
The guard was a bit stunned and replied bluntly, “I’m not a ‘comrade’ (police officer). Old man, who are you looking for?”
“My daughter, Ning Xiaohua,” Ning Fugui said genially.
The guard was confused. The two wealthy individuals from the city had checked in under the names Ning Yunqing and Kim Yo-hyeon. He didn’t know who Ning Xiaohua was. He politely said, “Old man, you must have the wrong place. We don’t have a Ning Xiaohua here.”
“Not here?” Ning Fugui was baffled. Zhu Cuihua, hearing this, felt a sense of relief and joked with her husband, “What did I tell you? That brat didn’t even finish high school; how could she be a boss? Let’s go home.”
Ning Fugui felt the village committee wouldn’t lie to him. He continued to ask the guard, “Brother, my daughter is a boss from the city. About this high, thin, very fair skin, with two red patches on her cheeks.”
The guard recalled someone who looked similar, but the female boss didn’t have red patches on her face. Suspecting they were Alzheimer’s patients looking for a lost daughter, he said hesitantly, “Old man, that boss isn’t called Ning Xiaohua; her name is Ning Yunqing. She doesn’t have red patches on her face either. She’s probably not your daughter. Go look elsewhere.”
“See, Fugui? Let’s go. If our Hua’er came back, would she really not come home?” Zhu Cuihua tried to lead him away, but from a distance, they saw a villager coming out of the guesthouse—someone else from the village committee. Fearing her husband wouldn’t leave, she waved at him, “Little Li, come here! Tell your Uncle Ning, is that boss our Hua’er?”
The young man named Little Li looked miserable and walked over hesitantly. “Uncle Ning, let’s talk over there.” Zhu Cuihua pulled Ning Fugui over, and Little Li immediately whispered to the guard, “Don’t let them in yet. Ask Boss Ning what she wants to do.” He then turned to Ning Fugui with a smile, “Uncle Ning, why are you here?”
As they were talking, a black business van drove up. The guard saluted the vehicle and let it in. Zhu Cuihua peered into the courtyard. After all, she was her own flesh and blood; the moment Ning Yunqing stepped out of the car, Zhu Cuihua recognized her from just a side profile. She rushed to the gate like a madwoman, clutching the railings and screaming, “Hua’er! Little Hua’er!”
Ning Yunqing had already gone upstairs with Yo-hyeon. Hearing this, Ning Fugui rushed over and asked anxiously, “What? You saw Hua’er?”
“Yes, I saw her! It’s her! That’s our Hua’er!” Zhu Cuihua was extremely agitated. She tried to push the tricycle through the gate, but Little Li stopped her, advising, “Auntie, this is the town guesthouse. If you make a scene like this, you’ll bring the police.”
“Don’t lie to me! That man said he’s not a policeman!” Zhu Cuihua was furious. Her own daughter was ignoring her. She blocked the main gate with her tricycle and sat on it, refusing to move. “Let’s see who can leave today!” She shouted to the guard, “Go get Hua’er down here! If she doesn’t come, we won’t leave!”
The guard had no choice but to call upstairs. Yo-hyeon answered the phone, her voice cold: “Tell them Boss Ning is unwell and is currently resting. Tell them to come back another day.”
The guard relayed the message. Hearing this, Zhu Cuihua showed no motherly concern for her child’s health; instead, she became even angrier and began cursing outside: “You little brat! Think your wings are strong now? Think you don’t have to recognize your parents just because you have money? We sponsored you to go out and work! Is the money you earned yours? It belongs to our family! Instead of saving it for your brother to buy a house and a wife, you’re handing it out to strangers. Giving it away for free? That’s my money! Do you have the right to give it away?”
Zhu Cuihua’s curses became increasingly vile. Little Li tried to persuade her to stop, but the more he tried, the more invigorated she became. Ning Fugui also disliked his daughter’s attitude of ignoring them, but he remained cautious, knowing his daughter was wealthy and not wanting to ruin the relationship completely. He feigned an attempt to calm his wife: “Stop shouting. Hua’er is unwell; let her rest. We’ll bring some local chickens to see her another day.”
“Local chickens? Bah! This brat doesn’t have us in her heart at all. She’s a big boss and only gave us 60,000? If our Shu’er became a boss, he’d definitely give us all the money, unlike this heartless thing!” Zhu Cuihua’s loud ranting made the guard cover his ears and irritated Yo-hyeon upstairs. She looked at Ning Yunqing, who was leisurely sipping tea on the sofa, and stamped her foot in anger: “How can they be so shameless? Even if it’s fake, if you’re sick, they should at least care.”
“I’m used to it,” Ning Yunqing said indifferently while scrolling through her phone. As the cursing continued, Yo-hyeon couldn’t stand it anymore. She pulled the curtains shut and walked out.
“So noisy!” Yo-hyeon walked out of the gate aggressively. Zhu Cuihua stopped cursing in surprise, seeing that the person wasn’t her daughter, and prepared to start again. Yo-hyeon didn’t give her the chance and barked: “Shut up!”
The shout stunned everyone at the gate. Yo-hyeon stared straight at Zhu Cuihua. Looking at the rural woman’s face, she couldn’t help but wonder: My Yunqing is so pure and cute; why does her mother have a face full of flesh, looking so mean and ugly?
“Our Hua’er…” Ning Fugui tried to speak, but Yo-hyeon cut him off with a sharp glare: “Your Hua’er is unwell and needs rest. I am Kim Yo-hyeon. I am the one who provided the money for the village. Your family received the most out of everyone. If you think 60,000 is too little, give it back to me. Stop making a noise here; it’s irritating!”
“Uh… I…” Hearing the money didn’t come from Hua’er, Zhu Cuihua immediately cowed. She looked to Ning Fugui for help. Ning Fugui forced a fawning smile: “Well… young lady…”
“Who are you calling ‘young lady’? I don’t know you. Little Hua was the one who suggested giving your family money. If you’re not grateful, give it back sooner rather than later, and stop embarrassing the village. What’s the meaning of parking this broken tricycle here? Do you want the Mayor to see that the village is full of hooligans so he abandons Pojiu Village?” Yo-hyeon was aggressive and overbearing.
The Ning couple were greedy for money. Seeing that this girl was hard to deal with and countered every word they said, they became deflated. Fearing the money would be taken back, Ning Fugui apologized profusely, hopped on the tricycle, and rode away.
“I’m so angry!” After driving the couple away, Yo-hyeon’s anger hadn’t subsided. She returned to the room, grabbed Ning Yunqing’s water cup, and gulped it down. Then she pointed at Ning Yunqing and scolded, “Look at you! You’re so capable when negotiating business, but why are you so cowardly here? Thank goodness I’m here, or you’d be bullied to death by them.”
“Yes, yes, thank goodness you’re here. I love you the most.” Ning Yunqing held Yo-hyeon’s face affectionately, thinking: To set a trap, one must have patience. By not going out now, that couple will end up even more miserable later.
