Chapter 38: Stepping Out
Ning Yunqing and Kim Yo-hyeon drove their rented car toward Pojiu Village, but they had to stop before reaching their destination. The previous night’s rain had turned the village’s unpaved roads into a series of muddy potholes. Looking at the muck, Kim Yo-hyeon worried about ruining her car but eventually decided she would simply buy the vehicle if it got too dirty just to get inside. However, Ning Yunqing steered the car back, noting that the road was too narrow for vehicles anyway. They put on rain boots and continued on foot.
As they walked hand-in-hand along the muddy path, Yo-hyeon imagined a young, rural Ning Xiaohua trudging through this mud in dirty cloth shoes, her face flushed from the plateau air but wearing a bright smile. Curious about her lover’s past, Yo-hyeon asked if she liked school. Ning Yunqing answered “yes” on behalf of the original host, Xiaohua, though she herself had grown weary of academics long ago.
Learning that Xiaohua had stopped her education to find work in the city, Yo-hyeon felt a wave of pity, assuming Xiaohua’s family had forced her to quit. She embraced Ning Yunqing, promising to cherish and protect her so she would never suffer again. This sincere vow touched Ning Yunqing, who secretly resolved to protect Yo-hyeon (Feng Xuan) in return and eventually bring her back completely.
The next day, they presented a development proposal to the Town Mayor. They suggested a plan where the government would fund road construction while their enterprise would subsidize the renovation of villagers’ homes to transform the area into a tourist attraction. When the Mayor worried about the long approval process for road funding, Yo-hyeon impulsively offered to have the Kim Group fund the road construction herself, though she noted she needed to clear it with her sister first. The Mayor was ecstatic to have the backing of such a massive corporation.
On the way back, Yo-hyeon admitted she was doing all this for Ning Yunqing. They visited the Kim residence, where Kim Yo-wei quickly discerned that her sister was asking for a favor. To Ning Yunqing’s surprise, Yo-wei readily agreed to fund the project, jokingly calling it Yo-hyeon’s “dowry.” However, Ning Yunqing noticed a strange ripple of interest in Yo-wei’s eyes regarding the village.
With the Kim Group’s funding, the project moved rapidly. The Mayor settled the pair in a local guesthouse and introduced them to Village Chief Chen as the entrepreneurs who would lead the village to prosperity. Chief Chen found Ning Yunqing familiar and eventually realized she was “Hua’er” (Xiaohua), the girl who had left the village over a year ago.
Word of the development spread quickly. Ning Yunqing asked Chief Chen to distribute funds to each household according to their needs, but she declined to visit her own home, choosing to focus on work instead. Sensing tension, Yo-hyeon secretly visited Chief Chen to ask about Xiaohua’s family. The stories she heard filled her with even more sympathy for Ning Yunqing, and she vowed to treat her with extra love that night.
When the money from Fengxian Technology was distributed, Ning Fugui and Zhu Cuihua sat on their bed counting their windfall. They were thrilled to receive 30,000 yuan, enough to help their son, Shu’er, buy a house in the county seat. As they counted, they disparaged their daughter, Xiaohua, for disappearing and never sending money home, assuming she had been scammed or led a shameful life in the city.
Zhu Cuihua went to a neighbor’s house to brag and discovered that other families had only received 20,000 or 30,000 yuan—far less than them. She learned the donor’s surname was Ning. When a member of the village committee visited to congratulate them, the couple assumed it was because their house was particularly dilapidated.
However, the committee member was shocked to realize the parents didn’t know who the benefactor was. When Zhu Cuihua began cursing her “unfilial” daughter again, the committee member awkwardly interrupted, revealing that Xiaohua was currently in town and was the very “Boss Ning” who had provided them with the money. Ning Fugui and Zhu Cuihua were left utterly stunned, unable to believe that their “poor girl” was actually the wealthy entrepreneur behind the entire project.
