Chapter 36: Stepping Out
“Hello, your delivery is here.” This time, it was an actual delivery guy. Ning Yunqing brought the food back into the room. As soon as she saw the takeout, Jin Youxian’s eyes lit up. She said excitedly, “Ah, the food is here!” She shook her sister’s arm again. “Sister, this is a meal I just ordered using Huahua Takeout. This restaurant’s food is great, though it’s still not as good as what Little Yunqing makes.”
She can get this happy over a simple takeout order? Jin Youwei looked at her sister in surprise and asked, “Is this what you usually eat?”
Jin Youxian nodded, helping Ning Yunqing lay the food out on the table. She was about to start eating when she saw her sister and stopped her chopsticks, saying apologetically, “I didn’t know you were coming, so there isn’t a portion for you. How about you eat mine, Sister? I’ll eat Little Yunqing’s!”
Ning Yunqing gave a wry smile and pushed her own portion over. Jin Youxian took it and was about to share it when Jin Youwei refused. “I’ve already eaten. You two go ahead.” Having said that, she stood up and walked around the small office. As expected, she saw no kitchen—only a small room with a closed door that looked like a bedroom. She turned back and asked, “May I take a look inside?”
Jin Youxian hesitated, but Ning Yunqing granted permission. “Please, Sister.”
Watching her sister push the door and walk in, Jin Youxian shot a complaining glance at Ning Yunqing. “It’s a mess in there.”
“It doesn’t matter,” Ning Yunqing said with a smile. By unspoken agreement, the two put down their chopsticks and walked toward the bedroom together. Upon entering, they saw Jin Youwei staring thoughtfully at the large bed with only one quilt. Jin Youxian’s heart skipped a beat, and her voice trembled. “Sister… I’ll clean it up right away!”
Is she looking at the wrong thing? Ning Yunqing smiled inwardly. She watched Jin Youxian run over to fold the quilt and went over to help her.
Watching this display of domestic harmony, Jin Youwei’s lips curled slightly. “It seems you two sleep here every night.”
“Ah?” Jin Youxian cried out in surprise, lowering her head to fold the quilt, silenced. Ning Yunqing stopped what she was doing and walked over to stand before Jin Youwei. The two stood face-to-face. Ning Yunqing stared into the complex emotions in Jin Youwei’s eyes and spoke carefully, “Sister, I love Youxian. I hope you can trust me enough to entrust her to me. I promise you that these current days are only temporary. I will definitely let her live the life she had before.”
“Then forget it,” Jin Youwei refused bluntly. Her sister had finally made some progress; if she went back to her old brainless ways of spending money like water, wouldn’t it irritate her to death? Without explaining further to Ning Yunqing, she asked, acting like the host of the room, “I want to talk to Youxian alone. Could you give us some space?”
“Okay,” Ning Yunqing agreed with a smile. She gave Jin Youxian a reassuring pat and turned to walk out.
Jin Youwei pulled her sister down to sit on the bed and scrutinized her closely. After not seeing her for a while, her sister seemed to have grown up a lot. She hadn’t lost weight, though there was some faint bruising under her eyes, likely from staying up late. However, this sister of hers had always stayed up late, so it couldn’t exactly be blamed on Ning Yunqing mistreating her. With a smile, she pinched her sister’s cheek. Seeing her sister’s pained and complaining expression, she feigned anger. “Running away from home without a word? And even selling yourself off in the process—you really are my ‘good’ sister!”
“Sister,” Jin Youxian rubbed her face and acted spoiled. “That’s because they were bullying me. If they treated me the way you do, I definitely wouldn’t have left.”
“Do you think everyone in the world is your sister?” Jin Youwei rolled her eyes at her and lectured, “This is society. No one is going to keep yielding to you forever.”
“Little Yunqing will,” Jin Youxian muttered quietly.
Jin Youwei glanced at her and smiled. “So that’s why you came to find her?”
Jin Youxian gave a weak nod. “Mhm. She’s really good to me. Her cooking is delicious. She can do everything; she’s practically perfect!”
Seeing her sister’s “fangirl” demeanor, Jin Youwei knew she had truly fallen for “Ning Xiaohua.” It was rare to see her sister so happy despite living such a hard life; for a moment, she didn’t know what to say. Since she didn’t speak, Jin Youxian began to panic and asked in a low voice, “Sister, can’t you just fulfill the wish of me and Little Yunqing?”
Jin Youwei gazed at her, a hint of mockery in her eyes. “If I fulfill your wish, have you considered what the Old Man will do?”
The “Old Man” referred to their father, Jin Wanlai. After the death of the first Mrs. Jin, Jin Wanlai had not remained faithful. On the contrary, he had married several wives in succession. The current one was likely the third since the first Mrs. Jin, and she was younger than Jin Youwei—practically old enough to be Jin Youxian’s sister. Although none of these wives had produced offspring, the four Jin siblings felt great disdain for their father’s “old cow eating tender grass” behavior; they all had grievances but didn’t voice them openly. This mention of the “Old Man” gave Jin Youxian a fright. She stared at her sister in surprise, feeling that her sister seemed even cooler now, and began to suck up to her sincerely. “You’re the one in charge of the Jin family now. As long as you agree, he doesn’t really count for anything.”
Jin Youwei glanced at her sister. “I haven’t said I agree yet.”
“Sister~” Jin Youxian dragged out her voice to act spoiled. Although Jin Youwei enjoyed hearing it, she still didn’t relent. She stared at her and issued an order: “Come home with me in a bit. Before the Old Man returns, we’re having a family meeting.”
“Isn’t Youyou in the US?” Jin Youxian tried to find an excuse to decline, but Jin Youwei didn’t give her the chance, replying directly, “I already called him back with one phone call. If you want to eat your takeout, eat it now. After you finish, I’m taking you home. If you don’t want to eat it, I’ll take you out to eat at that Western restaurant you love most.”
Jin Youxian’s eyes lit up. She grabbed her sister’s hand and wheedled, “Then can I bring Little Yunqing along? She’s been so busy coding lately that she hasn’t had a proper meal.”
Jin Youwei replied with a poker face: “That’s because your tiny company refuses to hire anyone. Huahua Takeout has grown so large, yet there are still only the two of you doing everything.” Looking her sister up and down, she sighed inwardly; she guessed Ning Xiaohua was likely the one supporting the whole operation alone. As expected of Ning Yunqing.
“Sister, you’re so right! I’ll go post a recruitment notice right now!” Jin Youxian turned to leave, but Jin Youwei stopped her, grabbing her and leading her out. “You can hide on the first, but you can’t hide on the fifteenth. Let’s go. Say goodbye to your Huahua.”
Jin Youxian was escorted out the door by her sister. Seeing Ning Yunqing, she immediately looked aggrieved. “Little Yunqing, Sister wants…” A cold wind drifted by, and she changed her wording. “…wants to take me home.”
Ning Yunqing stepped closer, smiled at Jin Youwei, and advised Jin Youxian, “You haven’t seen each other in days; Sister must have missed you. Go back with her. Don’t worry, I can handle things here on my own.”
Jin Youxian couldn’t believe her little girl was actually advising her to go back to the wolf’s den. She grabbed Ning Yunqing’s hand in shock. “Little Yunqing! I’m going home!”
“I know.” Ning Yunqing gripped Jin Youxian’s hand back and leaned into her ear, coaxing her softly, “This is an opportunity. Don’t be afraid. After you go back, find a way to sway them. Sister will agree.”
Jin Youxian was a bit dazed and blinked at Ning Yunqing. Ning Yunqing pulled back, gave the two a slight smile, and said politely to Jin Wei, “I’ll have to trouble you to take care of Youxian, Sister.”
“I should be the one thanking you for taking care of my sister.” Jin Youwei smiled and led her still-bewildered sister away. Ning Yunqing stood at the door to see them off, thinking: Regardless of whether Jin Youwei is the “original” or not, the fact that she didn’t sabotage us before proves she’s showing some leniency. This time feels more like she’s providing a graceful way out. Whatever her reasons, it’s a good opportunity. She believed that as long as Jin Youxian’s stance remained firm, the Jin family could be won over.
After leaving the small company, Jin Youxian was taken out to dinner by her sister. As her fork poked at the steak, her mind was entirely on Ning Yunqing’s words. The filet mignon tasted like wax in her mouth. She thought for a long time but couldn’t understand why going home would be a “good opportunity” for the two of them to be recognized. But if Little Yunqing said it was, then it was. But how was she supposed to fool them?
“After staying at Huahua’s place for a few days, has your palate changed too?”
Jin Youwei’s teasing voice snapped her out of it. Jin Youxian took a large bite of steak, looked at her sister with a grin, thought for a bit, and asked, “Sister, do you have someone you love?”
Jin Youwei went silent. The emotions in her eyes were so complex that Jin Youxian couldn’t make them out. A smile hovered at the corners of her lips—a smile that made one’s heart ache. She said, “It’s been so long, how could I still remember?”
“Huh?” Jin Youxian didn’t understand, but seeing her sister’s melancholy, she stood up and embraced her. Just as her sister would coax her, she coaxed back, “Don’t think about the past. A perfect person like you, Sister, must be matched with the very best.”
Perfect? The very best? Jin Youwei thought of her former self, and a hint of bitterness rose in her heart. She smiled and patted her sister, coaxing her back to her seat.
That night, the Jin family held a small family meeting. The four Jin siblings sat in a circle around a round table. As the current head of the household, Jin Youwei stated her purpose: “Xiao You just got back and might not be clear on the situation. Xiao Xian has fallen in love with someone. I’ve gathered everyone today specifically to look into this matter.”
“Xiao Xian has someone she likes? That’s a good thing! I support it!” Jin Youyou raised his hand, his attitude very positive. Jin Youxian looked at him gratefully and shouted like a fan, “Ah, Youyou, I think your newly dyed white hair is super cool. You’ll definitely be a hit.”
“Haha, this is flax gray.” The “young idol” Jin Youyou shot a disgusted glance at his twin sister. Then, noticing the heavy atmosphere surrounding his eldest brother and eldest sister, he became nervous and asked hesitantly, “What… what’s wrong?”
Jin Youwei replied expressionlessly, “The person Xiao Xian likes is a woman named Ning Xiaohua. She comes from the countryside.”
“Hahaha, Ning Xiaohua!” Jin Youyou burst out laughing. Seeing this, Jin Youxian immediately stepped up and smacked him on the head. “Don’t laugh at my Huahua! She also has another name, Ning Yunqing!”
“Fine, that one is okay.” Jin Youyou rubbed his head and gave in helplessly.
Jin Wei remained solemn. “Since you all understand the situation now, we will begin voting. Raise your hand if you agree to them being together.”
