Chapter 35: Stepping Out
The sun was high in the sky. Jin Youxian was sleeping soundly, clutching her quilt, when a phone call suddenly rang out—even louder than an alarm clock. She opened her eyes in a daze, and upon seeing the name on the screen, she snapped awake instantly. Her hand trembled as she reached toward the screen—
“Awake?” Ning Yunqing suddenly walked through the door. Startled, Jin Youxian flinched, her finger slipped, and she tapped the red “X,” hanging up the call. Ning Yunqing saw the silly girl sitting paralyzed on the bed with a pale face and found it amusing. She leaned in, hugged her, and asked softly, “What’s wrong? Had a nightmare?”
Jin Youxian turned over to hug her and wailed, “It’s all your fault for scaring me. I hung up on my sister! Now I really can’t go back!”
“Alright, alright, it’s my fault. I’ll take care of you,” Ning Yunqing patted her shoulder to coax her. Jin Youxian remained dissatisfied and grumbled a few lines, such as “I’m so rich, I don’t need you to support me.” Ning Yunqing couldn’t help but laugh, yet she continued to hold her and soothe her. “Fine, then you support me. I’ll work for you to earn money. Alright, get up. I’ll go prepare lunch.”
Ning Yunqing’s company didn’t have a kitchen installed. To cook, she had to rent an hourly room near the university town. Although it was a bit of a hassle, she was willing to go through the trouble to satisfy the Eldest Miss’s desire to eat a home-cooked meal. After instructing Jin Youxian to stay in and freshen up, Ning Yunqing went out to buy groceries. Just as she finished buying the vegetables, an unknown number called. Ning Yunqing figured that at this hour, if it wasn’t a telemarketer, it was someone looking for trouble. Sure enough, once connected, the person on the other end identified themselves. “Hello, I am from the Technology Department of the Jin Group. I am very interested in your ‘Huahua Takeout’ app. Do you have time to come out and chat?”
Ning Yunqing suspected that Jin Youwei wanted to acquire Fengxian Technology to turn her and her sister into subordinates for easier supervision. She replied directly, “If there is something you wish to discuss, you can say it directly over the phone. I’ve been busy taking care of someone lately and might not have time for a meeting. My apologies.”
There was a pause on the other end before the reply came. “It’s fine. I just think your app is quite good. I heard you are operating it yourself; would you be interested in joining the Jin Group?”
Ning Yunqing acted very hesitant. “This…”
“The price is negotiable.” The voice on the other end was very generous. “We can offer six figures, starting with a five.”
This price was very tempting for a girl from the countryside working alone. But Ning Yunqing was not “Ning Xiaohua”; she wasn’t moved at all. Instead, she thought it was quite low. She responded politely, “Thank you for your appreciation. Huahua doesn’t belong to me alone; I need to discuss this with my partner. Goodbye.” She hung up before the other side could reply.
On the other end of the line, the assistant holding the phone looked embarrassed. “President Jin, Ms. Ning said she needs to discuss it with her partner.”
“She thinks it’s too little,” Jin Youwei snorted. Thinking this girl was so ungrateful, she decided to play hardball. She instructed the assistant, “Notify the Tech Department. Assemble a team immediately and release a food delivery app within a week.”
The assistant took the order and left. However, the Tech Department didn’t have Ning Yunqing, and apps weren’t as developed back then. Upon receiving the order, they exerted herculean efforts and pulled several all-nighters, but it still took over half a month to produce the app.
Once Jin Youwei saw the finished product, she immediately spent a fortune on nationwide promotion, intending to surpass Huahua Takeout.
“Ah, Little Yunqing, look!” Jin Youxian was searching for materials for a new project when she accidentally clicked on a webpage and cried out in surprise, “Lightning Takeout!”
Ning Yunqing leaned over to look and found a promotion for a new delivery app. It had just launched, covered the whole country, and had far more funding than their Huahua. Looking at the parent company, it was actually the Jin Group. She figured this was the Jin Group’s—or rather, Jin Youwei’s—revenge for her lack of tact. Starting a new app to steal her business? It was a good move. But launching in such a short time meant it would likely be riddled with bugs, right?
As Ning Yunqing considered her countermeasures, Jin Youxian beside her could no longer sit still. She slapped the table and stood up. “It was actually made by my family! It must be my sister. How can she do this? No, I’m going to settle the score with her!”
Ning Yunqing stopped her. “Youxian, forget it. We’re all family.”
“Being family makes it even worse! This is too unscrupulous!” Jin Youxian scolded. She patted Ning Yunqing’s shoulder and gave her a guarantee, “Don’t worry, leave this to me. Don’t be afraid. I promise to get justice for us!” With that, she grabbed her bag and left.
In less than three hours, Jin Youxian came running back with her bag. Ning Yunqing looked up at her; her expression was neither sad nor happy, looking quite calm. She didn’t look like she had been discouraged, but rather like someone had given her some guidance. Curious, Ning Yunqing asked, “Youxian, what did your sister say to you?”
Jin Youxian tossed her bag aside, pulled up a stool to sit next to Ning Yunqing, held her chin, and sighed, “Don’t even mention it. I didn’t even see my sister.”
Then this reaction wasn’t right. Ning Yunqing put one arm around her while her other hand continued to type on the keyboard. “Maybe your sister was in a meeting. She’ll come looking for us another day.”
“Little Yunqing, you really are smart. she was in a meeting.” Jin Youxian turned her head to look at the computer screen, then annoyedly turned her eyes back to Ning Yunqing’s face. “Lucky for me she was in a meeting, otherwise I would have been in trouble.”
How did she suddenly have an epiphany? Ning Yunqing was curious. She temporarily put down what she was doing and turned her head to look at her. Jin Youwei (Youxian) poked her face and replied, “Little Yunqing, I ran into my Eldest Brother at the company. Brother saw me trying to burst into the meeting room to find Eldest Sister and stopped me immediately. He told me a lot of big principles. I can’t remember them all now, but they made a lot of sense. I can’t go in impulsively like that. Otherwise, if I make Sister angry and she decides to ‘destroy the flower with a ruthless hand,’ what then?”
Destroy the flower with a ruthless hand… Ning Yunqing couldn’t help but laugh, nodding in agreement. “Brother is right. This is normal business competition; it has nothing to do with morality. Although it’s aimed at us, it really wasn’t good for you to rush over so recklessly. Huahua Takeout is the first app we produced. Don’t worry, I will protect it.”
“Little Yunqing…” Hearing this, Jin Youxian was moved. She excitedly hugged Ning Yunqing and kissed her. After the kiss, she saw Ning Yunqing typing code again and pouted grumpily. “You’ve been typing code since just now. What are you doing again?” Code wasn’t as good-looking as her.
“This? It’s the ‘big gift’ I prepared for your sister,” Ning Yunqing replied, a mischievous smile hanging on her lips.
Three days later, Jin Youxian was browsing the web out of boredom when she unexpectedly discovered scandals about the Jin Group.
“Jin Group’s technology is subpar; users report Lightning Takeout frequently fails to log in, suspected personal information theft?” Jin Youxian read off the screen. Recalling the “big gift” Ning Yunqing mentioned that day, she turned her head in shock, “Little Yunqing, could it be your doing?”
Ning Yunqing looked at her with a smile, not explaining it away. “In war, nothing is too deceitful. By the way, Youxian, you’ve been researching the ‘Meimei’ (Beauty) app these past few days. Do you have a direction?”
Jin Youxian perked up, instantly tossing her family enterprise to the back of her mind. She replied seriously, “Yes, yes! I think we can make two sections: one for beauty/makeup and one for fashion. Then we invite influencers to join and share their makeup tutorials or styling tips. At the beginning, it’s best to invite celebrities; that way we have more appeal and can attract customers faster. Unfortunately, I have no money now.”
Ning Yunqing was a bit surprised. Her seemingly unlearned “playgirl” partner could actually come up with such a suggestion. She gave her a praiseworthy kiss. “It’s okay. We can invite celebrities in the middle stage, or we can create our own stars.”
“Create stars?” Jin Youxian was puzzled. An app can create stars?
Ning Yunqing replied, “To be precise, Internet Celebrities—people who are very popular within a certain circle, though there’s still a gap between them and traditional celebrities. Your suggestion about influencers joining is excellent. I think we can simultaneously open a section similar to Weibo, letting influencers post their makeup tutorials or outfit photos, and then directly list the item links below for users to purchase. Also, you said before you wanted to eat foreign snacks; I think we can also develop an overseas purchasing app, so you can eat delicacies from all over the world without leaving your house.”
“Just thinking about it makes me happy.” Jin Youxian leaned her face close to Ning Yunqing and nuzzled her affectionately. “Little Yunqing, you’re a genius!”
“It was all your idea.” Ning Yunqing smiled and kissed her. They had the concept now, but what they lacked most was money. Although Huahua Takeout had earned some, creating those two multinational apps would be difficult. She needed a new round of financing. She thought that if she were Jin Youwei, she would definitely trip them up at this step.
To her surprise, Ning Yunqing’s financing talks went quite smoothly. The Jin Group adopted a policy of non-interference. This made Ning Yunqing a bit suspicious. Was her thinking wrong? Was Jin Youwei actually playing fair?
“Ding-dong.”
The doorbell rang. Jin Youxian, who was teaching herself graphic design, waved her hand. “Little Yunqing, go open the door. It might be the delivery.”
Ning Yunqing answered and went to open the door. She was about to hand over the money, but upon seeing the visitor, she immediately pulled it back and greeted her with a smile, “Sister, why are you here?”
Sister is here? A bolt of lightning went through Jin Youxian’s mind. She was so scared she dropped her mouse. Just as she was hesitating about whether to hide in the bedroom, she saw Jin Youwei walk in, looking at her with a smile. “Where are you going, Xiao Xian?”
Staying in a standing position, Jin Youxian walked over to the water dispenser with a forced smile to pour her sister a cup of water. “Of course I’m going to pour water to welcome you, Sister.” She handed over the water with a flattering smile. “Sister, why are you here? Today is a workday!” Our company isn’t going bankrupt, is it?
Before the words were spoken, Jin Youwei guessed her stupid sister’s thoughts. She glanced at her lightly and said, “Don’t overthink. Our family is doing fine. I came to take you home.”
“Sister, I’m doing great here.” Jin Youxian grabbed her sister’s arm and shook it carefully. “I haven’t finished my work yet. Can I not go home?”
“What do you think?” Jin Youwei countered.
At that moment, the doorbell rang again. Ning Yunqing voluntarily ran to open the door. “You guys talk, I’ll get the door.”
