Chapter 34: Stepping Out
“Xiaoxian, wake up. You’re going to be late for work.”
Standing by the bed was her elder sister, dressed impeccably, spirited and authoritative. Jin Youxian muttered something under her breath and shrank her head back into the covers, whimpering, “Why hasn’t Xiao Yunqing come yet? I’m about to be abducted by my sister to go suffer.”
“Don’t be late on the first day.” Jin Youwei pulled the quilt back and smoothed out her younger sister’s messy hair. Her voice was very gentle. “Get up, little lazyworm. If you’re late, Sister will have to dock your pay.”
Pay? It couldn’t possibly be more than her usual pocket money anyway. Jin Youxian curled her arms, unable to muster any fighting spirit. Jin Youwei shook her head helplessly and used her ultimate trick: “One.”
Jin Youxian trembled; it felt like something unpleasant was about to happen.
“Two.”
Jin Youxian immediately sat up, looking at her sister obediently. “I’m up.”
“Good girl. Come downstairs in half an hour; I’ll wait for you in the hall.” Jin Youwei patted her sister’s head and walked out.
Half an hour later, Jin Youxian went downstairs fully dressed. Seeing her sister invite her to eat, she sat down with a smile. Her fork poked at a fried egg, the yolk flowing out, but Jin Youxian felt the food was tasteless. Her sister was willing to be late just to wait for her; it seemed she was dead set on keeping an eye on her.
“Sigh.” Jin Youxian let out a sigh. Jin Youwei put down the newspaper, glanced at her, and asked amusingly, “Why are you sighing over breakfast? Is the food not to your taste?”
“No, no.” Jin Youxian knew her sister was just making small talk to avoid the real issue. She obediently finished her breakfast, wiped her mouth, and diligently helped her sister carry her bag. Under her sister’s watchful eye, she got into the passenger seat and buckled her seatbelt.
Jin Youxian felt this was truly the most miserable morning of her life. However, her life was long, and this level of misery wasn’t even the peak because worse things were yet to come. For example, when the car arrived at the office, Jin Youwei said to her: “By the way, Xiaoxian.
To correct your habit of spending money lavishly, I’ve suspended your cards. These days, you will work alongside the employees. Sister will settle your pay daily according to the intern rate: 100 yuan a day.”
“Ah? So little.” Jin Youxian usually spent at least ten times that in a single day. To have it suddenly slashed so much was something she really wasn’t used to. So annoying! Jin Youxian tugged at her hair.
Jin Youwei couldn’t help but laugh. She smoothed her sister’s hair and coaxed, “Your world is too simple. This world isn’t just full of socialites who are fed with a silver spoon. Go see society. Perhaps you’ll have a new understanding of that ‘Flower Girl’.”
“Sister.” Jin Youxian was a bit unhappy. She retorted, “How can you call Xiao Yunqing a ‘Flower Girl’? It sounds malicious, like those villains in the old war movies.”
Jin Youwei didn’t know what to say, so she simply brought her sister to her post. She entrusted her sister to a trivial newcomer position and left with one sentence: “Wait for me in the office after work; we’ll go home together.”
“Oh.” Jin Youxian’s expression was helpless. Jin Youwei then instructed her assistant, “Don’t let anyone know Xiaoxian’s identity.” The colleague nodded and led Jin Youxian away. Jin Youxian was assigned to a department with many interns. Since her identity wasn’t revealed, the veterans unceremoniously dumped their tasks onto her. Some people even became “crippled,” unwilling to even get their own water or coffee, making the Eldest Miss Jin do everything for them.
Jin Youxian was quite distressed. She looked up at the clear blue sky and sighed, “A hell, a cage. When will I be liberated?”
“Little Jin!” At that moment, a senior’s call came from the inner room. Jin Youxian pursed her lips, carried two cups, and walked in. “Coming!”
In the evening, Jin Youwei finished her work and went to pick up her sister. Entering the room, she saw Jin Youxian sitting in a chair, staring blankly at the ceiling, looking dejected and lost as if she had suffered some great blow. She couldn’t help but smile and walked over, calling softly, “Xiaoxian.”
“Sister.” Jin Youxian pouted and threw herself into her sister’s arms aggrievedly. “Work is so scary! I want to go home!”
Jin Youwei couldn’t stop smiling. Her silly sister was used to being idle; it was quite amusing to see her so maladapted to being an ordinary person for the first time. Patting her sister’s shoulder, she led her out. “Alright, Xiaoxian, let’s go home.”
“Mm-hmm.” Jin Youxian clung to her sister. Along the way, she struggled several times before finally asking as they neared home, “Sister, can I not go tomorrow?”
Jin Youwei drove the car into the garage, stopped, and turned to look at her. “If you don’t go, will you have any money?”
Jin Youxian touched her already useless cards and shook her head. Jin Youwei asked again, “Then besides working, where else can you get money?”
“From Xiao Yunqing.” Jin Youxian realized her sister had set a trap. How insidious!
“You have to survive; you decide how to choose.” Jin Youwei took a pink 100-yuan bill from her bag and handed it to her sister. “Here, today’s wages.”
“Thank you, Sister.” Jin Youxian took it, her face puffed out like a bun. Without waiting for Jin Youwei, she went upstairs by herself. Collapsing onto her bed in the bedroom, she held up her reward for a day’s hard labor, looked at it, and felt a bit complicated. “When I was spending you before, why didn’t I feel you were so valuable?”
Rolling around, she took out her phone, snapped a photo of the cash, and sent it to Ning Yunqing: “Xiao Yunqing, look, the reward for my hard day’s work.” She ended it with a smiley face.
After a short while, she received a reply. Ning Yunqing’s text was concise: “You’re amazing, Youxian. Wait for me two more days; I will convince your sister with my actions.”
“Sigh. Two more days.” Jin Youxian stared at the ceiling and sighed.
Under Jin Youwei’s “loving attention,” Jin Youxian worked at the company for another two days. On the fourth day, she took a break to play with her phone and accidentally discovered that a colleague also had Huahua Delivery on their phone. Curious, she asked, “Is this app a new installation?”
The colleague replied, “Yeah, just downloaded it. I heard it’s very useful. Want to try ordering lunch with it?”
“Sure.” Jin Youxian agreed. She originally wanted to say it was her treat, but her wallet wasn’t full now. She scrolled through the restaurants and saw a new addition: Yunqing’s Little Shop. Curious, she clicked on it and saw the page was filled with pink. She blinked in surprise.
“Oh, which shop is this? So interesting, I want to order from them.” Seeing this, the colleague curiously searched on her own phone, but the result was disappointing. “Strange, why don’t I have it?” she asked another colleague. “Do you have it on yours?”
The other colleague shook her head. “I don’t have it either.”
“Probably a bug.” Jin Youxian explained with a smile. She hid in a toilet stall and couldn’t help but cover her face, shaking her head excitedly. “Ah, how embarrassing, she actually built a webpage specifically for me. I’m going to order!”
At noon, the meal Jin Youxian ordered arrived. She was a bit disappointed that the delivery person was a guy she didn’t know. She took her lunch upstairs, secretly opened it, and saw a large red heart specially arranged on top. She couldn’t help but cradle her cheeks in a daze. “Xiao Yunqing, really, how embarrassing.”
“Wow, Little Jin, a love bento!” A colleague leaned over to take a look and teased enviously.
Jin Youxian hummed an acknowledgment and began to taste it with a small spoon. The flavor was wonderful, just as delicious as the fish she had eaten that day. Even if IT didn’t work out, the two of them could open a restaurant. Jin Youxian ate bite by bite, and the more she ate, the more she missed the cook who made it.
Three days without meeting had Xiao Yunqing become thinner? With the app spreading across the whole city, she must have been working very hard these few days.
After finishing the last bite, Jin Youxian had an idea: Since she missed her, she would go see her. It was the lunch break, after all.
The delivery container was a plastic lunch box of decent quality. Jin Youxian couldn’t bear to throw it away, so she ran to wash it with water and tucked it into her bag. Then she went downstairs and hailed a taxi. The Jin Group was nearly fifty kilometers away from the University Town. It took Jin Youxian almost two hours to get there, skipping her lunch break entirely. After paying the huge taxi fare, she touched her pockets; she was truly penniless.
“Sigh, whatever. Seeing Xiao Yunqing is the most important thing.” Jin Youxian took the elevator upstairs. Standing at the company door, the smile on her face was impossible to hide. Before she could even take out her key, the door opened from the inside. Seeing the person she had been pining for, Jin Youxian threw herself forward. “Xiao Yunqing!”
“Youxian.” Ning Yunqing missed her too. Seeing her so emotional, she picked her up and spun her around twice in the air. She was truly glad she had eaten her fill while cooking lunch.
Jin Youxian had her fill of excitement. Emerging from the embrace, she still couldn’t bear to let go and snuggled against Ning Yunqing. While snuggling, she lamented, “Thank goodness, your plateau red is finally gone!”
I have to thank you for recommending that beauty salon.” Ning Yunqing was speechless. She soothed her into a seat and asked with a smile, “Did the lunch suit your taste?”
Jin Youxian’s eyes brightened. she slammed the lunch box from her bag onto the table and said heroically, “Excellent! All those annoying people were so envious. I want to eat it again tonight.”
“Okay. I’ll make it for you again.” Ning Yunqing replied with a smile.
Jin Youxian rested her chin in her hands, her face full of longing. After a while, her phone rang. Seeing it was a colleague, she hung up irritably and looked toward Ning Yunqing with a woeful face. “It’s those annoying people again. Xiao Yunqing, you have no idea how much I’ve suffered these past few days. I even skipped work this afternoon to see you; they’re definitely calling to scold me. I don’t know if Sister will dock my pay.”
She definitely will. Ning Yunqing looked at her with a smile. “How does it feel to be a worker?”
“It feels bad! Low pay, too many tasks, and those people order me around just because they arrived a few months earlier than me. Even my sister doesn’t dare be so blunt.” Jin Youxian spoke huffily, her face written with displeasure.
Ning Yunqing loved seeing this cute side of her. She reached out and poked her puffed-up cheek. Seeing Jin Youxian put on a face that said “I’m complaining to you and you’re still teasing me,” she couldn’t help but laugh out loud. “Alright, don’t be angry. If you don’t like it, don’t go. If Sister suspended your cards, I’ll support you. Come work for me; I’ll cover your three meals and accommodation, plus pay you triple the salary. How about it?”
“Really?” Jin Youxian was a bit tempted, but on second thought, she seemed to be the major shareholder of this company—the boss! She gave Ning Yunqing a white-eyed look. “You’re so annoying. This is Fengxian Technology; I’m the boss. It should be me paying you and you working for me.”
“Haha.” Ning Yunqing was about to lose it from the amusement.
Yet Jin Youxian continued her adorable stupidity. “I don’t care, I’m the boss. I’m not calling you Xiao Yunqing anymore; I’m calling you Huahua!”
“Let’s stick with Yunqing.” Ning Yunqing stood up.
“No.” Jin Youxian stood up too. In her high heels, she wouldn’t lose in height.
Ning Yunqing smiled bitterly. She extended her arm for a sudden kabedon. “Are you sure ‘no’?”
Jin Youxian shook her head, cupped Ning Yunqing’s face, and kissed her. Really, with only one arm free, how could you be faster than me?
“General Manager Jin. Miss Youxian didn’t come to work this afternoon. Is she sick?” The assistant chose her words carefully.
Jin Youwei understood perfectly. she instructed politely, “Mm. If she doesn’t come tomorrow, don’t worry about her anymore.” After the assistant left, Jin Youwei dialed her sister’s phone. With things heating up on the other end, naturally, no one answered. Jin Youwei’s brows furrowed, and she let out a helpless sigh. “Why is my silly sister always rushing to deliver herself?
Doesn’t she know that if she does that, the other person won’t cherish her?” Looking at the newly downloaded app on her screen, Jin Youwei’s tone gradually turned cold. “Huahua Delivery? Ning Yunqing, I wonder if you can withstand my next move.”
