Chapter 33: Stepping Out
The newcomer had sleek, medium-length hair and looked to be in her thirties. She wore exquisite makeup and clothes that lacked brand logos but were clearly worth a fortune. Her features bore about a sixty-percent resemblance to the recently departed Jin Youxian. This must be the legendary and “promising” eldest sister of the Jin family? Ning Yunqing smiled and feigned ignorance. “Hello, you are…?”
“I am Xiaoxian’s elder sister.” Jin Youwei pulled a business card from her bag and handed it over, speaking in a relatively cordial tone. “Won’t you invite me in to sit for a while?”
Ning Yunqing accepted the card with both hands. After glancing at the name Jin Youwei, she opened the door to let her in. “Sister, please.”
A smile played on Jin Youwei’s face—not exactly friendly, but carrying a hint of oddity. Ning Yunqing took note of it, poured a glass of plain water, and handed it over with both hands. “I have no tea or coffee, so I must trouble Sister to settle for water.”
Jin Youwei took the water and set it on the table. Like someone inspecting fruit at a market, she scrutinized Ning Yunqing from head to toe. When not going out, Ning Yunqing always met people with a bare face. Thanks to the massages at the beauty salon over the past few days, the plateau red on her cheeks was much lighter than when she first arrived, but as long as those two patches remained, she still looked a bit rustic. Jin Youwei’s eyes dimmed, her expression unreadable.
To be stared at like this without speaking would mean losing the upper hand. Ning Yunqing was no naive little girl; since Jin Youwei was watching her, she stared back at Jin Youwei with a lingering smile. “Why does Sister keep looking at me without speaking?”
Jin Youwei retracted her gaze and tapped the table, seemingly thinking of how to begin. After a moment, she tilted her head slightly and said in a lowered, serious tone, “I know all about you and Xiaoxian. Xiaoxian is young and ignorant; she acts without a sense of propriety. Don’t take it seriously. She will not be with a woman. I know you are essentially a good child. I won’t make things difficult for you; if you want to start a company, I can provide support. But Xiaoxian—you must sever ties with her.”
“General Manager Jin…” Ning Yunqing changed the form of address, but just as she was about to launch into a verbal defense, Jin Youwei cut her off.
“This is not up for negotiation. I’ll give you three days to consider. If the result doesn’t satisfy me, then…”
She stopped mid-sentence. It was a clear threat. Ning Yunqing felt Jin Youwei’s behavior was a bit strange; from the moment she walked in, she had been putting on a front that differed slightly from the setting’s “career woman” persona. Although she still had the “Alpha female” (Yu-jie) vibe, something felt off.
Ning Yunqing sat up straight and released a bit of her own pressure, adopting the expression she used back when she was a villain naturally authoritative without being angry as she gazed at Jin Youwei. Unsurprisingly, she saw Jin Youwei’s eyes flicker.
Avoiding Ning Yunqing’s gaze, Jin Youwei stood up indignantly and looked at her with a trace of dissatisfaction. “I know you don’t like hearing this, but this is reality. You must learn to accept your fate, little girl.” Having said her piece, she turned to leave.
Ning Yunqing followed behind to see her out. Jin Youwei didn’t look at her again during the walk. Leaning against the doorframe, Ning Yunqing watched her depart with a playful look on her face. “Accept my fate? Is this the first time you’ve met me? When have I ever accepted fate?”
That being said, she couldn’t directly offend her future sister-in-law. She needed to adopt a roundabout policy, and the first step was to give her “socialite lover” a preventive warning.
“Youxian.” Watching Jin Youwei’s silhouette from the window, Ning Yunqing dialed her lover’s number and spoke bluntly. “Your sister was just here.”
“Ah?” Jin Youxian was startled. “Oh my god, does she know about us? She didn’t make things hard for you, did she?”
“No.” Ning Yunqing smiled slightly, her voice gentle. “Youxian, I think your sister might have a ‘heart-to-heart’ talk with you when she gets back…”
Before she could finish, Jin Youxian patted her chest and promised, “Don’t worry, Xiao Yunqing, I will stand my ground!”
“I knew Youxian was the best. Good luck.” After coaxing her like a child for a few sentences, Ning Yunqing hung up. A breeze drifted through the window, messing up her hair. She gently smoothed it back, a smile on her face. “Three days from now… it should be quite lively, shouldn’t it?”
Contrary to what Ning Yunqing expected, three days later it was somewhat quiet. To avoid appearing rude, Ning Yunqing didn’t choose to reject through silence. She contacted Jin Youwei directly and expressed her thoughts politely: “Sister, I am glad you appreciate me, but what I seek has never been money. I like Youxian very much, and I know Sister cannot accept me for the time being. But that’s okay; I can accept Sister’s test.”
“Is that so? Then just you wait.” Jin Youwei’s voice was cold. Without another word, she hung up.
After this phone call, the frequency of Jin Youxian’s visits to the company decreased. Every time she came, she was fully disguised sunglasses and hats were all present, looking like a superstar making an entrance. Ning Yunqing opened the door for her, and Jin Youxian looked left and right; only after seeing no suspicious people did she enter. Taking off her hat, she sighed in relief. “Whew, I finally managed to run out. Xiao Yunqing, did Sister cause you any trouble?”
“No.” Ning Yunqing helped comb her hair with her hand and asked with concern, “Did your sister restrict your movement?”
Jin Youxian shook her head. “It’s not exactly a restriction, just a warning not to come find you. But I was worried and missed you a bit, so I came to take a look. I’m glad you’re okay, otherwise I really wouldn’t know what to do.”
“Rest assured, I won’t put you in a dilemma.” Ning Yunqing wiped the sweat from her forehead. If it truly came to that, she would make sure her lover stood by her side without hesitation.
Jin Youxian grabbed the hand near her face, cupped Ning Yunqing’s cheeks, and kissed her. Before she could fully enjoy it, the phone in her bag vibrated. Her heart skipped a beat. She hurriedly took out a pink card from her bag and pressed it into Ning Yunqing’s hand. Fearing Ning Yunqing wouldn’t accept it, she explained specially, “This is a card for the beauty salon.
Even if I’m not around, you must go on time. And those skincare products I bought you—you must apply them every day.” Saying so, she touched Ning Yunqing’s face; those patches of plateau red had softened significantly. She believed they would be gone within a month. Jin Youxian felt happy, and finally remembered the main point. “By the way, since Huahua Delivery is so popular on campus, should we promote it throughout the city?”
“Of course.” Ning Yunqing looked at her with eyes as gentle as water, filled with appreciation and love. “I’ve already contacted people and posted advertisements online. Not just Xincheng—it will spread to the whole province and the whole country.”
“Just thinking about it is exciting.” Jin Youxian’s face was full of longing. The phone rang inopportunely; her face soured, and she waved the phone helplessly. “Sister is checking in on me. Xiao Yunqing, I have to go. I’ll come back again. You must miss me.”
“I will.” Ning Yunqing smiled as she saw her lover out. Ever since Yin Fengxuan disappeared, she had become accustomed to longing. But now that she had found her lover, how could she be content with just longing? She naturally had to do something to snatch her lover back.
“You were five minutes late picking up the phone this morning, and you weren’t at home. Where did you go?” In the evening, after Jin Youwei finished her business, she returned home to have a heart-to-heart with her little sister.
Jin Youxian was “deeply moved but refused,” covering her mouth as she yawned, about to flop onto the bed. “I went out to play. Ah, I’m so sleepy. Sister, I’m going to sleep now.”
“Wait, I haven’t finished speaking.” Jin Youwei leaned toward her sister and lightly patted her face. Helpless, Jin Youxian had to open her eyes and look at her sister pitifully. Jin Youwei smiled. “Even if you don’t tell me, I know where you went. I won’t hold it against you.”
“Ah? Thank you, Sister!” Jin Youxian immediately perked up, but wilted in less than a second. Because she heard Jin Youwei say:
“But you’re not exactly young anymore. You can’t always live off the family. Little You has formed a band with friends and occasionally participates in talent shows; though he’s not worth emulating, at least he has a clear direction. Now, the only little ‘rice worm’ left in the family without a goal is you.”
Jin Youwei tapped her sister’s nose, making Jin Youxian wrinkle her nose and retort with a sullen face, “Sister, I have a company.”
“That doesn’t count, that belongs to Ning Xiaohua,” Jin Youwei replied.
Jin Youxian got defensive. “How does it not count? I invested a lot of money in it!”
“Then you withdraw the money tomorrow.” Jin Youwei’s reply was indifferent. Jin Youxian couldn’t stay seated; she bolted upright, staring at her sister. “Sister, you must be joking. This project is profitable; I’m not withdrawing.”
“Fine, since you don’t want to withdraw, then keep it.” Jin Youwei also looked at her. Facing her sister, she was much steadier than she had been facing Ning Yunqing, and her aura became stronger.
Jin Youxian blinked. Sensing her sister was being too easy to talk to and that there must be something waiting for her, she asked in a low voice, “Then can I go to the company to keep an eye on the business?”
“No,” Jin Youwei replied succinctly. “You are coming to work with me at the Jin Group.”
“Ah?” Jin Youxian’s exclamation was full of pain.
Jin Youwei lightly poked her forehead. “Don’t ‘Ah’ me. Look at how much money you spent while I was away. What do they call you in Xincheng circles? Jin Youqian! You really bring honor to my face.”
“Sister…” Jin Youxian clutched her forehead with an aggrieved face. “I still have a surplus in my card.”
Jin Youwei laughed out of anger. “I’ll arrange a job for you tomorrow. You’ll take my car; I’ll pick you up and drop you off. I won’t mistreat you, Eldest Miss Jin.”
“Don’t, Sister… I…” Jin Youxian wanted to beg for mercy, but seeing her sister glaring at her, she immediately changed to a flattering smile. “I will definitely wake up early and go with you obediently.”
“That’s a good girl.” Jin Youwei rubbed her sister’s head and commanded with a smile, “Weren’t you sleepy? Go to sleep.”
“Mm-hmm, okay. Goodnight, Sister.” Jin Youxian jumped onto the bed and burrowed into the covers. Hearing the door click shut, she grabbed the phone from the nightstand and sent a text from under the blankets.
Ding-dong. Ning Yunqing grabbed her phone and her brows furrowed. The message she received said:
“Waaaaah~ Xiao Yunqing, I’ve been put under house arrest by my sister! Come save me quickly! QAQ”
“How can she be so silly.” A smile appeared on Ning Yunqing’s face as she looked at the phone. With a light press of her thumb, she replied:
“Rest assured, with me here, I will save you.”
