Chapter 32: Stepping Out
“Why do you stutter every time you see me?” Jin Youwei spoke with a hint of helplessness as she gestured for her sister to come over. Seeing that Jin Youxian wasn’t moving, she got up and walked over herself. Jin Youxian had just done something “bad,” and the marks were obvious.
Guilty to the core, she kept backing away. Jin Youwei couldn’t bear to watch it anymore; her elegant brows furrowed, and she gave a calm command: “Stand still.”
Jin Youxian froze like a robot, staying rooted to the spot without moving a muscle.
Jin Youwei sighed and pulled her sister down to sit on the bed. She reached out to undo the scarf around Jin Youxian’s neck, caught sight of the “strawberry” (hickey), and let out a hum from her nose. It wasn’t a loud sound, but it made Jin Youxian shudder. Jin Youxian pressed down on her sister’s hands and offered a forced smile. “Sister, I’ve been an adult for several years now.”
“Mm, I know.” Jin Youwei wore a smile and asked, “Who planted this on you?”
Jin Youxian thought for a moment. If she said it was the “plateau-red” girl, her sister probably wouldn’t be able to handle it. She decided to tell a flat-out lie, scratching her neck and mumbling vaguely, “Are you talking about this? An unlucky mosquito did it.”
Does she think I’m blind? Jin Youwei smiled again. “Coming back so late, where were you out playing wild again?”
Huh? Did I fool her? Jin Youxian grinned like a golden retriever. “Sister, you’ve wronged me. I came back so late for the sake of my career.”
Jin Youwei looked at the hickey on her sister’s neck and listened to the word “career,” her hands beginning to itch with the urge to strike. However, she held back, putting on a curious expression. “Oh? My little sister knows how to be busy with a career now? What kind of career is it?”
“Sister, I just opened a company!” Jin Youxian said with a face full of boasting. “It’s in the IT sector.”
“You even understand IT?” Jin Youwei was very curious. Jin Youxian replied, “Of course I don’t, the lit partner understands it.”
“The partner is very little/young?” Jin Youwei caught the key point. Jin Youxian realized she had slipped up and laughed awkwardly. “Not that big. But very impressive, she knows how to do everything.”
“Is that so?” Jin Youwei squeezed her sister’s hand, asking as if they were just having a casual chat, “Is her name Ning Yunqing?”
The hand in her palm trembled. Jin Youwei looked at her sister; in Jin Youxian’s eyes, there was a trace of anger, but mostly alarm. She denied it, “No.” At least, not on the ID card.
“Then is she called Ning Xiaohua?” Jin Youwei then said the name from the ID card.
Jin Youxian was shocked. The suppressed anger in her eyes could no longer be contained. She stood up abruptly and questioned, “Sister, did you send someone to tail me?”
Jin Youwei didn’t stand up, saying calmly, “I don’t need to do that. You don’t need to know how I found out; you only need to understand that I’m doing this for your own good.”
Jin Youxian hadn’t been rebellious for years, but now her buttons were being pushed. Agitated, she wanted to push the door and leave, but suddenly realized this was her own room. She stepped back, crossing her arms and slightly raising her chin to look at her sister. She didn’t dare say anything harsh, using only her eyes to express her dissatisfaction.
Jin Youwei glanced up at her, still seated, and simply reasoned with her, “Do you think that because she doesn’t covet your wealth, she is a top-tier good person?”
Jin Youxian nodded earnestly.
Jin Youwei sneered. “So inexperienced. She doesn’t want your money, yet she lets you pay to open a company for her?”
“That was my own choice.” Jin Youxian stiffened her neck.
Jin Youwei smiled again. “That’s why I say you’re silly. Is the contract signed? Is the company in your name? How are the profits split?”
Jin Youxian thought about it and said, “My name is in the company name. The contract… the split… I’ll talk to her about it tomorrow.”
“You still don’t see clearly. Oh, my silly sister.” Jin Youwei stood up and rubbed her sister’s head, just like petting a golden retriever. “Don’t go back there. Listen to your sister: cut ties with her and consider the money spent as a lesson learned. Otherwise, Sister will have to solve this in her own way. It’s late; go to sleep, Xiaoxian.”
“Oh, goodnight, Sister.” Jin Youxian closed the door and collapsed onto the bed. Thinking back on her sister’s words, the more she thought, the more she felt something was wrong. “The company name only has me, it doesn’t even have Xiao Yunqing’s name. How can you say Xiao Yunqing is greedy for my money?
Besides, it’s been so many days, and aside from the company essentials like buying computers and renting the office, I wanted to give her cash for living expenses and she wouldn’t take it. How could she be a bad girl? Sister is wrong.”
Furthermore, as for the profit split and such it wasn’t much money, and she didn’t care for it anyway. Why should she listen to her sister’s nonsense? She was an adult now; she needed to have her own consciousness and stick to her opinions. The more Jin Youxian thought about it, the more logical it seemed.
She nodded silently, but then lamented in her heart: Did she just let me go to sleep that easily? Sister’s way of handling things seems much gentler than before. Too lazy to think further, Jin Youxian rolled over and crawled into the blankets.
Because of Jin Youwei’s warning, Jin Youxian had felt like she was being watched whenever she left home lately. Helplessly, she had to reduce the number of times she visited the little company. However, reducing didn’t mean stopping; Jin Youxian would still go, and she never went empty-handed. Every time she arrived with large bags and small parcels, she would see Ning Yunqing sitting at the computer, tapping the keyboard rapidly, her position never changing.
Truly terrifying. Jin Youxian walked over, leaning in to coax Ning Yunqing. “Stop looking at code, come with me to the beauty salon to change your mood.”
Ning Yunqing refused. “Two more days and I’ll be approaching the final stage.”
“Hmph. How can code look better than me?” Jin Youxian was very angry. She didn’t talk about the contract or the profit split either; she just dropped her bag and left. Two days later, when she came again, Ning Yunqing had finally changed her position. This time, Ning Yunqing took the initiative to suggest, “Youxian, let’s go to the mall. Help me pick out some clothes; I’m preparing to go out and recruit merchants.”
“You’re finished?” Jin Youxian hadn’t seen the finished app yet and curiously leaned her head over. Ning Yunqing took out her phone and gave her a demonstration. “There are no merchants yet, these are virtual. Look, just a few clicks, fill in some info, and your meal is ready. Isn’t it convenient?”
“Mm, it is much more convenient than calling.” Jin Youxian’s eyes curved into a smile. She hooked her arm into Ning Yunqing’s and walked out. “Let’s go, beauty salon first. Then we’ll buy clothes when we get back.”
“Alright,” Ning Yunqing agreed.
Jin Youxian took Ning Yunqing to the largest beauty salon in Xincheng. After being served by a beautician for over an hour, the plateau red on Ning Yunqing’s face was still stubbornly hanging on. Jin Youxian got a bit anxious, rolled up her sleeves, and did it herself. Cupping Ning Yunqing’s cheeks with both hands, she rubbed while muttering in her heart: Rub, rub, rub, quickly get these two patches of rustic color off and give me back my clear and graceful little girl.
Her strength wasn’t small, making Ning Yunqing’s cheeks sting. Ning Yunqing couldn’t help but grab Jin Youxian’s hands, laughing weakly, “Youxian, gentler. This thing has been with me for over ten years; it’s impossible to make it disappear in one day.”
Force has a reaction; Jin Youxian’s hands felt like they were on fire. She rinsed them with cold water, looked back at the two patches of red on Ning Yunqing’s face, crossed her arms, and tilted her head. “Alright, luckily I brought all my gear.” With a charming smile, she said, “Close your eyes, I’ll give you a surprise.”
Ning Yunqing obeyed and closed her eyes, cutting off her vision. But she still had her sense of touch; she could feel her chin being supported by Jin Youxian and various brushes brushing against her face. Jin Youxian’s technique was very practiced; she had likely researched makeup for many years.
“Done.” After more than half an hour, Jin Youxian finally let go of her hands contentedly. “Xiao Yunqing, open your eyes. Don’t be too stunned by your own beauty.”
Ning Yunqing smiled and opened her eyes. The mirror reflected an exquisite face. The features were the same, but all flaws were gone. Under the enhancement of various powders, her face looked much more three-dimensional, without a trace of rusticity. She looked full of vitality, with a hint of a socialite’s pride.
“Good technique.” With a smile of praise, Ning Yunqing glanced at Jin Youxian, her eyes curving charmingly. Jin Youxian felt as though she was seeing the delicacies on the table from that day; she couldn’t help but swallow, then pursed her lips defensively and pulled her up. “Alright, let’s go buy clothes. After that, we’ll go recruit clients.”
“Mm.” Ning Yunqing let her lead her away. As soon as they got into the car, Jin Youxian couldn’t hold back; she grabbed Ning Yunqing’s face and gave her a kiss. Afterward, she looked completely satisfied. “Hehe, the makeup I did is really beautiful.”
Ning Yunqing felt helpless. She pinched Jin Youxian’s chin and turned her around, asking with a trace of teasing, “The makeup is beautiful? I’m not beautiful?”
Jin Youxian felt that this Ning Yunqing looked even more beautiful. Showing her white teeth, she leaned her face in. Ning Yunqing blocked her mouth with her index finger, and before she could feel distressed, Ning Yunqing pressed her lips against hers. “This time it’s my turn. Youxian, you are truly beautiful.”
Jin Youxian drove with a red face the whole way, unable to stop smiling foolishly even after they arrived. Ning Yunqing saw her acting like a “Husky” and couldn’t help but smile to herself. The two walked along the university commercial street. Relying on their good looks, Ning Yunqing’s excellent eloquence, and Jin “Youqian’s” lavishness, they managed to gather quite a few merchants to join along the way.
Having sellers wasn’t enough; they also needed buyer clients. Ning Yunqing went back and spent the night creating promotional posters, drawing QR codes on them, and posting them all over the campus and outside businesses. Although few people used it at first, because of the grand opening “free meal” discounts, the users grew more and more.
Huahua Delivery instantly became one of the essential apps for teachers and students in the University Town area.
“Even though we’re not making much right now, we can still make money once the discounts are adjusted. The traffic is good now; later we can put shops up there, do some physical store coupons or something, and charge them advertising fees there should be profit. Right, Xiao Yunqing?” Jin Youxian said thoughtfully as she looked at the data on Ning Yunqing’s computer.
Ning Yunqing echoed, “Yes. Your idea is very good. This is only the first step. Next, we can take…”
Thinking of the app’s name, she found it a bit hard to say. “Make the ‘Huahua’ brand famous and get into e-commerce.”
“I heard a senior named Ma talk about it when I was in school; e-commerce is very profitable.” Jin Youxian perked up. “Aside from food, there’s clothing. We can do an apparel section, and also, cosmetics are very important. The profit margins for both are quite high.”
“Mm. We’ll take them one by one.” Ning Yunqing hadn’t expected the socialite to have quite a head for business. She smiled slightly. “You can tell me any ideas you have, and I’ll help you turn them into reality.”
“You’re too impressive,” Jin Youxian praised. She thought hard, but her mind was just full of money and no other good ideas. She rested her chin in her hands and sighed. “Suddenly, I have no ideas.”
“It’s fine, take it slow.” Ning Yunqing liked her dazed and cute appearance, and she rubbed her head with a smile. “You’ve worked hard today. It’s late, go back and rest.”
Jin Youxian sighed again. If her Big Sister wasn’t around, she definitely wouldn’t go back. She pulled Ning Yunqing into her arms for a snuggle before leaving reluctantly.
A few minutes later, there was another knock at the door. Ning Yunqing thought: Could that silly girl have forgotten something? She walked over to open the door, and seeing the person standing outside, she smiled inwardly: The big antagonist of this world has finally appeared.
