Chapter 30: Stepping Out
The “Big Sister” Jin Youxian spoke of was the same “General Manager Jin” the lobby manager had mentioned—full name Jin Youwei. As her name implied, she was extremely accomplished (Youwei meaning promising/achieving).
A Harvard graduate, she had started her own business from scratch while still in college and made it flourish. After returning to the country, she took over the family business. With her exceptional vision and tactics, she increased the Jin Group’s profits dozens of times over within ten years.
She was the undisputed soul of the Jin family. This was her public business image; however, regarding her private image in the eyes of her family, Jin Youwei was equally terrifyingly strong.
The Jin family had four children: the eldest, Jin Youwei; the second, Jin Youzhe; and the twins who represented a sudden change in style the third, Jin Youyou, and the fourth, Jin “Youqian” (Gold-Has-Money), no, Jin Youxian. Their mother passed away early, and their father was busy with business, so from a young age, Jin Youwei took on the responsibility of caring for her siblings.
No matter how busy work was, she never forgot to call and check on them. Of course, because she was too busy, she only called and was rarely seen, so the two youngest children grew up a bit “crooked.” However, “crooked” was only in the eyes of outsiders; to Jin Youwei, her youngest brother and sister were well-behaved and adorable children simply because they never dared to be impudent in her presence.
“Haven’t seen you for a few months, why are you stuttering?” Jin Youwei picked up the towel from the floor, shook it out, and patiently began drying her younger sister’s hair.
Jin Youxian had a guilty conscience. The towel resting on her head sent a shiver through her body. She gave a silly laugh, attempting to change the subject.
Jin Youwei didn’t bite. Glancing at her sister’s abnormal behavior, she gave a light hum. “Xiaoxian, while I was away, you didn’t go and get into trouble again, did you?”
“N-no… of course not!” Jin Youxian shook her head in denial. She never dared to offend this “God of Wealth” who controlled her bank card balance; in fact, she felt a tiny bit of dread—not just out of fear of being broke, but out of fear that her childhood trauma would resurface.
Shortly after the twins were born, Mrs. Jin passed away. Jin Youxian’s memory of her mother was nearly non-existent. To her, her sister Jin Youwei, who was over ten years older, acted more like the maternal figure in her life.
She and her twin brother, Jin Youyou, had always been spoiled by the family because of their age; they got whatever they wanted. Once, she and Youyou both took a liking to a new novelty item in the house and got into a physical fight over it. Jin Youwei believed in brotherly love and sisterly respect; seeing them fight over a toy, she was so angry she brought out the family disciplinary rod.
She beat the two of them until they could only crawl, and because she had a project to negotiate, she left immediately without offering a single word of comfort! From that moment on, the Big Sister became a terrifying demon king in Jin Youxian’s heart who would go berserk when angry a shadow that remained deeply etched in her mind to this day.
“Sister, you just got back from America, you must be exhausted. Come, sit here, I’ll give you a shoulder rub.” After saying this, Jin Youxian pressed the God of Wealth into a seat and began massaging her haphazardly with both hands.
Jin Youwei was a veteran of the business world, and not young either; her sister’s abnormality was obvious at a glance. She casually fished for information: “Taking a shower in broad daylight… where were you last night?”
So scary, the Demon King Sister is appearing. Jin Youxian’s hands stopped. She laughed awkwardly. “I played too hard last night and was too tired. I fell asleep and forgot to wash up, hehe.” Of the Thirty-Six Stratagems, “fleeing” was the best. Jin Youxian thought she’d better run fast, or she wouldn’t be able to leave in a moment.
She clapped her hands and gave a dramatic “Ah!” of realization. Surprised, she said, “Oh no! I almost forgot something important. Sister, I can’t serve you anymore, I have to go get busy!”
She turned to slip away, but her hand was still caught by her sister. With a woeful face, Jin Youxian turned back and forced a smile. Jin Youwei asked her, “Where are you going?”
“I said it’s something important.” Jin Youxian tried to break free, searching for an excuse. Suddenly, a flash of inspiration hit her, and she replied with a smile, “I want to give Sister a surprise; it wouldn’t be fun if I said it now. Sister, go and rest quickly. If you get too tired, I’ll be heartbroken.”
Jin Youwei was silenced by this. She smiled and let go. “If you don’t want to say, I won’t ask. Go on. Come back early. Don’t go playing around wildly outside again.”
“Mm-hmm, don’t worry, Sister.” Jin Youxian nodded repeatedly. As soon as her arm was free, she turned and bolted. Jin Youwei watched her, shaking her head helplessly: She only talks a good game. Her emotions are written all over her face does she really think I can’t see? Staying out all night… could it be…
The corners of her lips curled slightly. Jin Youwei’s smile was complex—there was bitterness, anger, and even a tiny shred of anticipation.
Escaping from home, Jin Youxian headed straight for the University Town. She called a friend and went to the campus startup park. She looked at a few rooms in the building and found that the areas were quite small—about the same size as her bedroom—and completely empty. Can you really start a company like this?
Jin “Youqian” was a bit puzzled and simply told her friend, “Forget it, I don’t understand this. Just find me the most expensive room. It has to be done by this afternoon; I’m bringing the Little Boss to see it tonight. When it’s done, I’ll treat you to a big meal.”
“You really live up to your name, ‘Youqian’.” The friend covered her mouth and laughed. “Why so frugal this time, only wanting one room? Is that the Little Boss’s instruction?”
“Mm.” Jin “Youqian” pursed her lips with a look of utter helplessness. “The little girl said we don’t need too much space at the beginning; it’s a waste.”
“Little girl? Your partner is a little girl?” The friend was very surprised. Jin “Youqian” was actually listening to a little girl? There was big news here!
Jin Youxian ignored her. She hadn’t eaten much since last night and was hungry now. Patting her friend’s shoulder, she held her stomach and asked, “Are there any luxury hotels around here? Come on, I’ll treat you to lunch.”
Jin Youxian’s friend wasn’t poor either; although not as wealthy as Jin Youxian, she didn’t need to be treated to every meal. She thought for a bit and said, “The school is mostly poor students, how could there be a luxury hotel? There’s a small restaurant nearby with good food; I’ll take you to try it.”
“Okay.” Since she was hungry, Jin Youxian didn’t complain and followed her friend.
The small restaurant was indeed very small about the same size as the tiny office space. Seeing the simple decor and the cheap-looking tables and chairs, Jin Youxian couldn’t help but shake her head. “I’ve changed my mind. Let’s go to the city for a good meal.”
The friend stopped her and advised, “Don’t look down on this place just because it’s small. The cook here is excellent. Apparently, she’s a newcomer from last month and is only in charge of lunch. It’s early now; wait a while and you’ll see, there won’t be any seats. The students in my class say you even need a reservation.”
“That miraculous?” Jin Youxian found it hard to believe. Looking at the tiny room, she asked hesitantly, “Is it clean?”
“Are big restaurants clean?” the friend countered.
Jin Youxian was speechless. Her steps faltered, but suddenly she heard a conversation between the owner and an employee coming from the back room—
“Didn’t I give you a raise? Why are you still leaving?” The owner’s voice sounded slightly unpleasant.
“I’m sorry, it has nothing to do with the salary. I have more important things to do and not enough time to manage the work here anymore,” the employee apologized calmly.
Wait… that apologizing employee’s voice sounded very familiar. Jin Youxian changed her direction. The friend smiled. “Is the Eldest Miss finally willing to give me a chance to treat her?” She found a place to sit, only to see Jin Youxian bypass her and head straight for the kitchen. She was dumbfounded. “No way… you have to witness it with your own eyes before you’ll eat?”
“It really is you! Little Yunqing!” Jin Youxian glared at the owner who was bothering the girl, and pulled the plateau-red girl into her arms as if asserting ownership.
“Miss Jin?” Ning Yunqing was a bit puzzled to see her, and the shop owner was even more bewildered. “Who are you? Are you a customer? Dining is in the front, not the kitchen.”
“I know that, obviously,” Jin Youxian replied unhappily. Hearing the owner’s tone just now, she felt he was making things difficult for her plateau-red girl what a bad boss. Reaching into her bag, she pulled out a stack of cash and waved it. “Is this enough for a month’s salary?” Slapping it hard into the owner’s hand, she grabbed Ning Yunqing and walked out. “What kind of person makes things hard for a young girl? She’s going to start a company with me; she doesn’t have time to cook in your little restaurant.”
The owner was a bit dazed from being hit by the money. Feeling the bills in his hand, he felt uncomfortable and chased after Jin Youxian. “Wait, you’ve misunderstood.”
“Misunderstood?” Jin Youxian looked at him with her chin raised, her gaze disdainful. “What misunderstanding could there be with that tone of yours? If I wasn’t here, were you planning to refuse to let her leave?”
“Miss Jin…” Ning Yunqing wanted to explain, but Jin Youxian didn’t give her the chance, instead encouraging her: “Don’t be afraid, I’m here. No one dares to bully you!”
Ning Yunqing’s lips curled. The roles were reversed, but she found herself unexpectedly happy. She remained silent and began heartlessly watching the show.
The shop owner returned the money, anxious to explain. “I’m not greedy for money. It’s just… alright, I am greedy for money. When Little Ning came to apply, I saw she was a young girl with nowhere to go and felt sorry for her, so I kept her on. Who knew she was so talented? She made my business several times more prosperous.
Now that she’s leaving, my business will go right back down. She was making a fuss about quitting a few days ago, I just gave her a raise, and now she’s quitting again wouldn’t you be annoyed if it were you?”
The owner hung his head with a look of grievance. Ning Yunqing wanted to laugh watching this, while Jin Youxian looked a bit dazed. “I wouldn’t be annoyed. She’s leaving definitely because the money you give isn’t enough. Tell you what, I’ll bid against you. Let’s see who offers more, and the winner takes her away. How about it?”
To ask a small business owner to compete in wealth with a tycoon socialite who slaps down thousands of dollars without blinking? Was this a joke? The owner chickened out and waved his hand. “Go on, go on. My little shop can’t keep a Great Buddha like you.”
Jin Youxian was satisfied and quirked an eyebrow at Ning Yunqing as if seeking credit. Ning Yunqing smiled slightly and said to the owner, “Thank you for your understanding. I am very grateful for your care previously. I am leaving because Miss Jin and I plan to develop a delivery app; when it goes online, I will help you with free promotion.”
“What’s an ‘app’?” The owner blinked, looking at the two in confusion. “Sounds like something fresh and new. I’ll thank you in advance then.” Glancing at Ning Yunqing, the owner sighed earnestly, “Little Ning, Miss Jin is so generous; you’re making the right move following her. It has much better prospects than staying here with me.”
Hearing this, Jin Youxian became even more smug. She happily pushed the money back toward him. “Since you have such good vision, why don’t you come work with me too? How much for this shop of yours?”
