Chapter 25: Wuxia Arc
“Alright.” Ning Yunqing didn’t put on any fake airs of modesty; she simply shed her clothes and lay on her side in the bed.
I want her. Only these three words remained in Jiang Chenyue’s mind as she pressed down on Ning Yunqing’s shoulder and leaned over her.
The next morning brought a familiar scene: Jiang Chenyue was nestled in Ning Yunqing’s arms, while Ning Yunqing stroked her hair and leaned in to catch her scent. Seeing Jiang Chenyue wake up, Ning Yunqing placed a kiss on her smooth forehead and praised her softly, “Senior Sister, you were quite formidable last night.”
Jiang Chenyue’s face was a mixture of white and red white being her natural complexion, and red being the flush of her embarrassment. She truly hadn’t expected her “little white rabbit” junior sister to have such a shameless side. Last night, she had clearly pinned her down, but somehow, she had ended up in a daze and swapped positions with her sister.
It must have been because her sister took advantage of her shoulder injury. This brat… calling her a “big bad wolf” was an understatement! She was clearly a crossbreed between a big bad wolf and a white fox a little wolf-fox!
“You little wolf-fox,” Jiang Chenyue spat out, a helpless smile on her face.
Ning Yunqing froze. That strange nickname… it was the one her lover, Yin Fengxuan, used to call her. Every time Fengxuan failed at a “counter-attack,” she would call her that. Ning Yunqing pulled the person in her arms tighter and kissed her red lips. She intended to pull away, but Jiang Chenyue met her halfway and gave her two firm pecks, as if asserting her sovereignty.
“It seems you like that name?” Jiang Chenyue asked, glancing at her.
Ning Yunqing replied, “I do.” She caressed her lover’s cheek, her gaze as gentle as water. “As long as it’s from you, I’d like it even if you called me a little beast.”
Isn’t a wolf-fox basically a little beast? Jiang Chenyue looked at her junior sister’s slightly roguish expression, rendered speechless. She reached out to pinch her face, but the moment she moved her arm, her entire shoulder felt as if it were on fire, a searing pain burning through her. “Yunqing.”
Her voice was still sharp and cold, but Ning Yunqing heard the tremor in it. She asked worriedly, “What is it? Does your shoulder still hurt?”
“The medicine is poisoned,” Jiang Chenyue said, her voice freezing over. Ning Yunqing carefully removed the bandages. Seeing the wound on the shoulder, she knit her brows. As her internal power surged through her body, a killing intent rose; the shoulder, which should have only had some light bruising, was now festering and charred black.
She had obtained this medicine from Jiang Chenyue’s personal maid, Meixiang. According to the plot settings, Meixiang owed the First Master her life and was fiercely loyal to the Netherworld Palace. For the medicine to be poisoned, something else must be going on.
Ning Yunqing suppressed her bloodlust and gently touched the area around the wound. “The poison hasn’t gone deep. It will be fine if we apply the right medicine immediately. I’ll go get the Netherworld Jade Dew.”
The Netherworld Jade Dew was created by the founding ancestor of the Palace; its effects were miraculous and could neutralize a hundred poisons. Jiang Chenyue nodded, sealed several major acupuncture points on her shoulder, and instructed Ning Yunqing, “Go see if there’s a new face in the Medicine Pavilion.”
Ning Yunqing had intended to do just that. She nodded in agreement. “Alright.” She gently draped clothes over her lover’s shoulder and turned to walk out.
In the Medicine Pavilion of the Netherworld Palace, a group of young maids, aged seventeen or eighteen, were sorting herbs. Seeing Ning Yunqing approach, they froze and stopped their work, kneeling on the ground. “Second Master.”
Ning Yunqing gave a light acknowledgement. Looking at the maids whose heads were bowed low, she smiled and asked, “Am I that terrifying? Everyone, look up.”
The young maids responded with a “Yes” and timidly raised their heads. Ning Yunqing’s gaze swept across their faces. Most appeared terrified, but a girl at the very end remained calm and composed. Ning Yunqing couldn’t help but look at her a few more times. Staring at her, she asked, “Who are you?”
“This servant, Taozhu, greets the Second Master.” Her voice was cold and carried a hint of maturity, not sounding like an inexperienced young girl.
“Taozhu?” Ning Yunqing curled her lips. “Go and fetch the Netherworld Jade Dew for me.”
“Yes.” Taozhu took the order and rose, causing the other maids to turn pale with shock. They stared at her in disbelief: Has Taozhu gone mad? Only the two Masters are supposed to know where the Jade Dew is kept!
Taozhu walked to the medicine cabinet, grasped the iron qilin ornament, and gave it a light turn. A hidden compartment was revealed. The maids grew even more astonished, looking at Taozhu in disbelief. With an indifferent expression, Taozhu walked right in.
Ning Yunqing asked the maid next to her, “How long has she been in the Palace?”
The young maid replied with a trembling voice, “Reporting to the Second Master, Taozhu has been in the Palace for two years. She was always timid before. I don’t know what has come over her today; please do not blame her, Second Master.”
Acting out of character? Ning Yunqing curled her lips. “She’s been in there for a while; I’ll go check on her. You all may rise.” She strolled into the hidden chamber. As soon as she entered, the door slammed shut and a flash of silver appeared—a dagger was held against her throat.
“I expected you’d be lying in wait inside.” Ning Yunqing flicked the dagger away with her finger. Seeing the woman retreat two steps, she swept her sleeve and sent her tumbling to the ground. “Speak. Who are you?”
“This servant is Taozhu.” The woman’s teeth were tightly clenched, her voice trembling.
Ning Yunqing ripped off her human-skin mask and immediately stepped back. Tossing the mask aside, she sneered, “The Taozhu in my Palace isn’t as weathered as you, lady.”
This was a jab at her looking old. The woman stood up in a rage, pulled a porcelain bottle from her robes, and said provocatively, “Demoness! Look at what this is!”
“A porcelain bottle,” Ning Yunqing replied flatly.
Such a casual attitude broke the woman’s rhythm. She ground her teeth in hatred, shaking the bottle. “This is the Netherworld Jade Dew you’re looking for! Demoness, your Senior Sister was wounded by my Senior Brother and then poisoned by me. How satisfying! Hahaha!”
Ning Yunqing looked at her coldly and asked back, “Take a look—who looks more like a demoness right now?”
“You, obviously! I’m going to make your Senior Sister be buried with my Senior Brother!” The woman grinned. Holding the bottle between two fingers, she smiled at Ning Yunqing and slowly let go.
Seeing the bottle about to hit the ground, Ning Yunqing blurred forward and caught it. Looking at the woman who was crazed with rage, she sighed with regret. “You are the cousin of the Xie family, Xie Yuyan. You love Xie Yushan?”
Xie Yuyan froze for a moment, then burst into a maniacal laugh. “Haha, I love him. Yes, I love him, but even in death, he never said he loved me. I thought if I helped him find his brothers, he would marry me, but… it’s all you! It’s all of you! Your Netherworld Palace did this! You and your evil cult!”
“We are an evil cult?” Ning Yunqing scoffed. “If not standing with a group of hypocrites like you makes us an evil cult, then we’d rather be one.”
“Incorrigible!” Xie Yuyan screamed.
Ning Yunqing turned a deaf ear and mocked her, “Tell me, did your group ever do anything ‘chivalrous’? Setting aside the ungrateful Xie Yushu, have you ever acted like someone from the righteous path?”
“How am I not righteous?” Xie Yuyan countered, her voice trembling this time not from anger, but from an attempt to hide her guilt.
“Taozhu was young, yet you had the heart to kill her, and you still ask me how you aren’t righteous?” Ning Yunqing looked at her with contempt and held up the porcelain bottle in front of her. “Did you think I was really afraid of you breaking it?”
Xie Yuyan watched intently. She saw Ning Yunqing mimic her actions, loosening her grip and letting the bottle fall. The liquid dripped onto the discarded dagger. Ning Yunqing sneered, “Do you really think my Palace would keep something so important in a place like this?”
“No, impossible!” Xie Yuyan grabbed her head in panic, scratching at her hair like a madwoman.
“Faking madness won’t help you.” Ning Yunqing glanced at her coldly. She used her internal power to draw up the dagger and stabbed it through Xie Yuyan’s shoulder, the force pinning her to the wall. “Do you know what you just held?” Ning Yunqing looked at her with a chilling gaze.
“That is also a divine medicine of our Palace, but it is extremely toxic. There is no antidote in this world. It is several times more potent than the poison you gave my Senior Sister. Enjoy it. I’ve wasted too much time with you; my Senior Sister will miss me.”
With that, she struck the stone door open and walked out gracefully. “Seal the door.”
“Senior Sister, I’m back.” Ning Yunqing walked in with a smile, holding the Netherworld Jade Dew. However, the sight of the woman on the bed made her heart stop. She pushed off with her toes and used her lightness skill to leap toward her.
