Chapter 24.1: Wuxia Arc
Jiang Chenyue watched her in silence, appearing cold while her mind raced with a thousand thoughts. Ever since the day Ning Yunqing kissed her, something suppressed deep within her heart seemed to come alive. Originally, she merely liked having her junior sister by her side, following her lead and obediently calling her “Senior Sister.”
Now, however, her feelings had intensified. She didn’t just love her sister’s obedient side; she adored her fear, her coquettishness, and even her occasional sparks of rebellion. She wanted her junior sister to be cold toward everyone else and intimate only with her, saving all her joys and sorrows for her eyes alone.
Hearing her junior sister say she wanted to stay together, Jiang Chenyue’s first reaction wasn’t that she was joking or trying to take advantage; rather, it was that her sister was delivering herself right to her bed. Should she accept?
Her junior sister was lovely, but her Netherworld Divine Art was reaching its peak, entering the critical moment of breaking through to the tenth level. At this time, distractions were most dangerous. Staring at Ning Yunqing, a hint of a smile touched her eyes as she found an answer. “Do you want to enter secluded cultivation with me?”
Ning Yunqing didn’t like empty rooms, but with her lover there, she felt any place would be the most beautiful on earth. She responded eagerly, “If Senior Sister doesn’t mind, Yunqing naturally wants to be with you.”
Ning Yunqing hadn’t finished her sentence, but the newly awakened Jiang Chenyue began to wonder: Together? Does she want to be with me? Haven’t we always been together? Jiang Chenyue glanced at her and said calmly, “We have been together since childhood; a little more time won’t make a difference.”
Ning Yunqing was stunned; her Senior Sister was flirting with her. The flirting Senior Sister continued: “The second and third sons of the Xie family were killed by my hand. The Xie family of Jiangnan will not let this rest. The Palace cannot be without a leader right now. You go and keep watch; I will return before long.”
“Senior Sister…” Ning Yunqing wanted to suggest skipping the seclusion and just attacking their enemies directly, but Jiang Chenyue’s martial obsession flared up. She interrupted her, saying deeply, “No one has ever reached the tenth level of the Netherworld Divine Art. Do not forget our Master’s dying wish.”
Ning Yunqing, who had long forgotten the Master’s wish, quickly searched her system records. She finally discovered why her Senior Sister was such a martial fanatic: it was because they had a fanatic for a Master. Their Master had failed to reach the tenth level even at death, having been stuck at the ninth level for over thirty years. Her final wish was for the two sisters who inherited her legacy to reach the tenth level and settle her regret. No wonder her Senior Sister practiced so hard she was a filial disciple. Ning Yunqing’s gaze grew even more tender. “Senior Sister.”
Seeing that look of admiration she loved so much, Jiang Chenyue lightly stroked her junior sister’s head. “I am going. Take good care of yourself.” After a word of instruction, she turned and walked away.
Feeling the lingering warmth of her lover on her hair, Ning Yunqing’s lips curled into a soft smile. She murmured gently, “Your heart is troubled. But I will help you fulfill that wish.”
With Jiang Chenyue in seclusion, the power of the Palace fell back to the Second Master, Ning Yunqing. Taking advantage of her sister’s absence, she took the liberty of moving her bed into her sister’s private chambers, pushing the two beds together and moving in.
Scenting her lover’s fragrance every night, Ning Yunqing sat cross-legged. Knowing her lover was nearby, her heart was exceptionally calm. In just ten days, she found the path and reached the ninth level herself. Meanwhile, inside the seclusion room, Jiang Chenyue began to think of her.
“Junior Sister.” The image of Ning Yunqing kissing her flashed through her mind. Her recently stabilized heart began to flutter. She opened her eyes and swung her sleeve. “Why do I keep thinking of her?” Suppressing the surging internal energy, Jiang Chenyue forced herself to be calm. “I must not let my efforts go to waste.” Closing her eyes, she began to practice again.
“Second Master, disciples of the Jiangnan Xie family have been spotted at the foot of the mountain.”
Ning Yunqing listened to the maid’s report and asked calmly, “Did you hear anything?”
The maid replied, “Those disciples seem to be looking for the Second Young Master Xie.”
Ning Yunqing instructed, “Do not alert them yet. Just keep watch.”
“Yes.” The maid took the order and left.
A few days later, Ning Yunqing followed up: “Have those people from the Xie family found Xie Yufeng?”
The maid replied, “No. We watched them pass the village where the Second Young Master stayed, but they didn’t enter.”
Was the disguise so good that even his own people couldn’t find him? Ning Yunqing sneered. “Let them be. There are many wild wolves in the mountains; they likely won’t find him.”
“Yes. We noticed they seem to be giving up, switching to asking for news about the Third Young Master instead. However, aside from knowing he is in the Palace, they can find out nothing else,” the maid added.
By this logic, unless the head of the Xie family was an idiot, he should be getting suspicious. It seemed she needed to start setting her own board. Ning Yunqing acknowledged with a simple “Mhm” and waved the maid away.
Jiangnan, Xie Family Villa.
Upon hearing the report from his disciples, Xie Yushan’s sword-like brows furrowed. He wondered aloud, “There has been no news from the Third Brother since he entered the Palace, and now even the Second Brother, who was providing support from outside, has vanished. Could it be?”
“Master, you worry too much,” advised the female manager of the villa, Hua Zhu. “The Second Young Master has always been alert; he is likely hiding somewhere to avoid the Netherworld Palace’s scouts. As for the Third Young Master, you have even less to worry about. With a face like his, what woman would have the heart to hurt him?”
Xie Yushan found this reasonable but was still worried. He pondered, “It’s better to be safe. A demonic sect like the Netherworld Palace is an enemy to all. I should invite the leaders of the various sects to discuss this matter together.”
“Yes, I will arrange it immediately.” Hua Zhu turned away, her brow furrowing slightly.
After she left, the cousin of the Xie family, Xie Yuyan, who had been sitting and drinking tea, spoke up softly. “Senior Brother, since we can’t find news of the two brothers, why don’t I make a trip to the Netherworld Palace?”
“Yan’er?” Xie Yuyan and Xie Yushan were from the same sect and were cousins childhood sweethearts. However, Xie Yushan was devoted to martial arts and chivalry and was oblivious to her feelings. He worried about a “weak woman” entering a trap and advised, “Let’s wait a little longer.”
“My two brothers are missing, and as their sister, I am worried. Besides, without information, you’ll be hesitant in your actions. Don’t forget, Master praised my lightness skill as being no less than Yufeng’s. Furthermore, I am a woman; it will be easier for me to sneak into the Palace,” Xie Yuyan smiled. Her eyes were filled with affection as she looked at him. “Don’t overthink it. I want to go; you don’t owe me anything.”
Xie Yushan felt it was strange, but he was moved by his sister’s selflessness. “Be extremely careful.”
“Wait for my good news.” Xie Yuyan curled her lips into a smile, thinking: You owe me so much, I don’t believe you won’t marry me, you blockhead.
“The Xie family is inviting those ‘righteous’ people to their villa?” Ning Yunqing held a small note, a mocking smile on her face. How thoughtful of them, coming to their deaths one by one. It saved her the trouble of finding them. “Pass down the order: we set out in three days for the Xie Villa to meet those ‘righteous’ warriors.”
“Yes.” The maid took the order and left.
Ning Yunqing returned to the Moon Pavilion. Stroking the couch where her Senior Sister had lain, her eyes softened. “Since you are devoted to martial arts, I will remove these distractions for you.”
It was the third watch of the night. Clouds obscured the moon. Jiang Chenyue was practicing in the pitch-black seclusion room. True qi circulated through her body, but it suddenly stalled at a critical acupuncture point. Her mind was in chaos; a bloody image flashed before her.
There was blood Ning Yunqing’s blood. While she was away, Xie Yushan led a group of hypocritical “righteous” martial artists into the Palace. Ning Yunqing fought to the death, but outnumbered, she was stabbed through the heart by Xie Yushan’s sword, falling into a pool of blood.
“Yunqing!” Her eyes snapped open. Jiang Chenyue sat in the darkness, realizing she was soaked in sweat. It was so quiet not a soul around. Reality and dreams blurred, and her heart trembled. That cannot be real! Her true qi surged out, shattering the doors of the building as she used her lightness skill to fly out.
“Yunqing.” Murmuring the name of her constant companion, she reached the Cloud Pavilion in an instant. She burst through the window only to find a silent room. With a tight frown, she searched every room like a madwoman, overturning tables and chairs. The loud noise startled a night-patrol maid. The maid cautiously climbed to the loft and froze, dropping her lantern at the sight of the woman inside.
She saw a woman dressed only in her inner robes, her hair loose, slumped on the ground. Her eyes were bloodshot yet filled with sorrow. In the dim candlelight, those moon-like eyes held a trace of tears. This woman, radiating hate and grief, was actually the cold and proud First Master, Jiang Chenyue.
“First Master,” the maid called out with a trembling voice. She couldn’t imagine how the invincible Master could have such an expression. Worried she would be silenced for seeing this lapse in composure, her legs gave way and she knelt, her body shaking.
Jiang Chenyue glanced at her. Seeing it was a palace servant, her gaze turned icy. “You are still alive? Where is Yunqing?”
The maid trembled even more, replying confusedly, “The Second Master is in the Moon Pavilion…” Before she could finish, she felt a breeze brush past. When she looked up, there was no one there.
Did I see a ghost? The maid clutched her chest, grabbed her lantern, and fled.
Jiang Chenyue landed at the Moon Pavilion. It was still peaceful. Because her lightness skill was supreme, her steps were silent. Seeing her own bed had been doubled in width, a look of helplessness crossed her face. Seeing the woman sleeping soundly on the bed, her heart softened like never before.
Yunqing is still alive. Jiang Chenyue stepped closer and reached out to touch Ning Yunqing’s face. At that moment, Ning Yunqing, who had her back turned, launched a counter-attack. After three exchanges, Ning Yunqing saw Jiang Chenyue’s face and abruptly pulled back her hand. “Senior Sister?” she asked in shock.
Jiang Chenyue studied her, her mind filled with conflicting emotions. “Your power has increased?”
Ning Yunqing didn’t take the bait. Noticing her sister’s disheveled hair, she lightly smoothed it and said softly, “Weren’t you in seclusion? Why do you look like this?”
Jiang Chenyue snorted, brushed her hand away, pinched her chin, and leaned in for a kiss. Afterward, the corners of her lips curled up slightly. “From now on, you are not allowed to get too close to anyone else.” You are mine.
From her lapse in composure just now, Jiang Chenyue realized her feelings for her junior sister were deeper than she imagined. Before, she couldn’t stand anyone hurting her; now, she couldn’t even bear the thought of her death. If her junior sister died, she would go mad.
This feeling was unprecedented. She had once thought she liked Xie Yushu, but when he died by her hand, she hadn’t shed a single tear. Now, even though her sister wasn’t dead, just the thought of her being missing had driven her to a frenzy. This must be love.
She loved her junior sister. Whether her sister loved her back or not, she belonged to her. Jiang Chenyue lived by this principle. Staring at her sister’s somewhat dazed face, she gently rubbed her chin and repeated, “Did you hear me?”
This felt exactly like an old mission where she and her lover had traveled to a wuxia world and used their characters to flirt. How nostalgic. Ning Yunqing nodded with a smile, playing the role of the obedient “submissive” as she had long ago. “Yes, Yunqing will listen to Senior Sister.” After those words, she pounced into Jiang Chenyue’s embrace, her voice choked with emotion. “Do you know how long I’ve waited for this day?”
“Mhm?” Jiang Chenyue wrapped her arms around her slender waist, looking at her in confusion. Has this girl been after her for a long time?
Her obedient expression turned into a sly one. Ning Yunqing leaned back, falling onto the bed, then flipped over to pin Jiang Chenyue down. Holding that slightly displeased face, she teased, “For making me wait so long, I can’t let you off easily, Senior Sister.”
“You…” Jiang Chenyue was stunned. How did her little white rabbit suddenly become a big bad wolf? Her hands were pinned to the bed; she could have broken free with her inner power, but having just “recovered” her, how could she bear to hurt her? Fine, she would let her have this one. Gazing at Ning Yunqing’s close-up face, a smile bloomed on Jiang Chenyue’s face.
Sunlight poured in through the window, shining on the two women on the bed. Ning Yunqing opened her eyes against the light. Looking at her lover sleeping sweetly in her arms, she placed a kiss on her forehead. There was no better morning than this. Though, she had worked hard last night.
Jiang Chenyue was a light sleeper, and her years of martial arts training had made her highly alert. She woke up the moment Ning Yunqing kissed her. Seeing the “big bad wolf” from last night looking at her with eyes as gentle as water, she didn’t get to speak before the wolf in rabbit’s skin stroked her face and said softly, “You worked hard last night.”
A bit of resentment flared in her heart; she felt the other was gloating after getting the better of her. Jiang Chenyue’s eyes turned cold. With a flushed face, she pinched Ning Yunqing’s chin and gave her a hard kiss. “Don’t let it happen again.”
Ning Yunqing was speechless and responded obediently, “Yes.” She tucked her lover in and got out of bed. “Rest a bit longer.”
“Where are you going?” Jiang Chenyue reached out from under the covers to grab her. Ning Yunqing paused and replied gently, “Following Senior Sister’s teachings: morning practice.”
Still shaken by the nightmare from the previous night, Jiang Chenyue held Ning Yunqing’s hand tight and ordered, “You are not allowed to go.”
“But if I don’t work hard, how can I be worthy of Senior Sister?” Ning Yunqing asked sincerely, though she was actually teasing. She had already caught up to her sister’s progress during the seclusion; both were now at the ninth level.
Jiang Chenyue said as if it were only natural, “Whether you are worthy is for me to decide. Now, I want you to stay here with me.”
What a straightforward way to act spoiled. Ning Yunqing always granted her lover’s wishes. Since Jiang Chenyue didn’t want her to go, she would stay. “Alright, I won’t go. I’ll stay here with you.” Seeing Jiang Chenyue move over, Ning Yunqing lay down beside her.
