Chapter 14: Entertainment Industry Arc
Ning Erbai cared for no one but himself. His information regarding Ning Yunqing was still stuck at the stage where she was staying at the Grand Westin. To find his daughter to pay off his debts, he went through the trouble of borrowing money just to travel to the hotel, only to find out she had long since left. If she wasn’t home, where could she have gone?
As luck would have it, a couple of Ning Yunqing’s fans happened to be at the hotel reminiscing about their idol’s journey. Standing nearby, he overheard their conversation.
“Ah, so this is where Goddess Ning stayed. Let’s soak up some of her luck; maybe we can get into Tsinghua-Peking or earn tens of millions too.”
Tsinghua-Peking? Earn tens of millions? Ning Erbai followed the two young girls for a while and realized that his “money-losing” daughter had actually gotten into Tsinghua-Peking University and was making ten million per film! It seemed that this time, he truly could turn his luck around.
Ning Erbai suddenly felt a surge of confidence. By bragging to others that his daughter would share a few million with him, he managed to borrow some money from some brainless fools and headed straight for the train station without even going home. Standing at the gates of Tsinghua-Peking, he was beaming with joy. His daughter was inside, and his “money bag” was right before his eyes. As long as he found her, he’d be rich.
The more he thought about it, the wider his grin became, his face wrinkling like a chrysanthemum. He marched straight inside, ignoring the security guard at the gate. But while he didn’t look at them, they certainly stopped him. “Sir, wait a moment.”
Ning Erbai turned around impatiently, lifting his chin and trying to look menacing to scare the guard off.
With a face full of bruises and swelling, his terrifying expression was indeed quite alarming. The guard was startled but quickly blocked his path. “Are you a parent of a student? Please cooperate and sign in.”
“So many annoying rules,” Ning Erbai scoffed. He raised his hand like a grand lord, waiting for the guard to hand him a pen. The guard chuckled and handed it over. Ning Erbai scribbled something down, tossed the pen back with one hand, and started walking in. Within two steps, he was stopped again.
“I’m sorry, you cannot go in.” The guard’s tone was still polite, but Ning Erbai felt these people were insane. He immediately let out a string of curses. “C#N*M% (censored due to vulgarity)! I’m going to see my daughter, why are you stopping me?” With that, he shoved the guard aside and stormed through.
Ning Erbai had never been to Tsinghua-Peking, so he wandered around aimlessly. After much effort, he found the building where Ning Yunqing was supposed to be. Before he could even enter, a voice shouted from behind, “Stop!” Ning Erbai ignored it and tried to barge in like a boss. His ideals were grand, but reality was harsh; this time, he didn’t succeed. Before his foot even touched the stairs, he was pinned to the ground by a group of men.
Before sending Ning Yunqing to the university, Yin Fengxuan had communicated with the school authorities to arrange for personal security to protect her daily, preventing her from being harassed by crazed fans or the media. These guards had received word of Ning Erbai’s arrival and swarmed him the moment he appeared.
Pinned down, Ning Erbai cursed incessantly. He started by “greeting” the security team’s families and then began screaming at Ning Yunqing. “You money-losing brat! Get out here! Your old man is being bullied! Get your ass out here!”
His voice was so loud it could be heard throughout the entire building. In the laboratory, Ning Yunqing frowned as she conducted an experiment. She glanced out the window and, seeing Ning Erbai’s foolish display, couldn’t help but turn away. This “cheap” father was truly an embarrassment. She looked down at the reagent in her hand, a smile curling her lips as she thought: Should I make some kind of medicine for him?
Danger! Danger! Touching the character’s bottom line. Please choose carefully!
The annoying alarm blared. Ning Yunqing curled her lips and smiled. “Don’t worry, I won’t take his life.” Removing her rubber gloves, she used the landline to call the security chief. She said softly, “Take him to the lounge first. Don’t let him disrupt the students’ classes.”
Not long after Ning Erbai reached the lounge, Ning Yunqing arrived. He thought the little brat had finally shown her face. Amidst his excitement, he began cursing again, standing up to try and hit her, but the security team held him firmly in place.
Ning Yunqing waved them away. Though worried, they let go. Ning Yunqing handed a cup of water to Ning Erbai and asked with a smile, “Tired from all that shouting? Have some water to moisten your throat.”
Ning Erbai glared at her, snatched the cup, and gulped it down without any suspicion. After finishing the water, he felt nothing unusual. Ning Yunqing continued to smile. “Is the money Young Master Yin gave you all gone?”
Ning Erbai froze for a moment. No wonder the girl hadn’t come to save him; she had found out long ago. He didn’t answer her but simply spat, “I raised you for so long, you should pay me back. You can’t let me lose money like this…”
Ning Yunqing gave a dry laugh, pulled a bank card from her bag, and held it out. Seeing the card, Ning Erbai’s bruised face lit up with a smile, and the curses he was about to hurl were swallowed back. He reached for it, but Ning Yunqing pulled the card back.
Seeing the scumbag father about to lose his temper again, Ning Yunqing spoke like a cat playing with a mouse: “Don’t be in a hurry. It’s not that I won’t give it to you. Let’s settle the accounts first and see how much money I’ve cost you over the years. If I recall correctly, I started working part-time to pay your debts when I was 16. Before 16…”
“Fine, stop counting!” Ning Erbai interrupted. He knew very well he had spent almost nothing on this daughter; most of her expenses had been covered by her mother. But with a massive fortune right in front of him, he couldn’t give up. For the sake of the money, he tried a softer approach. “Yunqing, I know I’ve wronged you and your mother. But you can’t just watch your father die. I owe people money; if I don’t pay them, they’ll kill me!”
What does that have to do with me? Ning Yunqing remained unmoved. She pulled a piece of paper from her bag it was an agreement stating she and Ning Erbai would have no further contact. Ning Erbai’s eyes widened. He looked at his daughter in disbelief. His “money bag” had grown wings and wanted to fly away?
“Ning Yunqing, you money-losing brat! You want to dump your old man? What am I supposed to do when I’m old?!” Ning Erbai stood up and roared in anger. Ning Yunqing watched him calmly, still using a negotiable tone. “I’m not forcing you. If you don’t want to sign, then I’ll just give you the cash based on the bill I calculated.”
Cash could never be as much as what was on a bank card. Though Ning Erbai was foolish, he was shrewd about money. He immediately refused and asked tentatively, “How much money is on that card?”
Ning Yunqing felt nothing but disdain. She curled her lips slightly and sneered, “This is a credit card. You can spend as you like, and I will clear the balance for you.”
Spend as I like? Ning Erbai was tempted. “You better keep your word.”
At this point, Ning Yunqing wasted no more words. She handed him the agreement and the pen. Once she saw him sign his name, she threw the card down and said to the guards, “Send him wherever he wants to go,” before turning to leave the room.
As soon as it got dark that day, Ning Yunqing heard the sound of a key turning in the lock. Only one person had the key to her place. She walked out carrying a freshly made salad and, seeing the person at the door, greeted her with a smile and a kiss on the cheek. “Aren’t you supposed to be at Shihua? Why did you run over to Tsinghua-Peking?”
Yin Fengxuan put her arm around her waist, looking her up and down to make sure there were no injuries. “I had some business in the capital and decided to stop by and see you.”
She must have received a message from the security team and came because she was worried. Ning Yunqing smiled, picked up a slice of apple with a fork, and held it between her lips to pass it over. Yin Fengxuan pouted but leaned in reluctantly, her teeth biting the apple as her lips tasted the sweetness.
Now that she had something more delicious than salad, Ning Yunqing knew how to prioritize. She set the salad on the table and reached out to unbutton Yin Fengxuan’s shirt. After undoing two buttons, Yin Fengxuan suddenly stopped her. She looked at her searchingly and said, “I still feel it’s unsafe for someone your age to have so much money. How about this: I’ll give you a Class-B card and transfer money to you every month. If you don’t have enough, just call me, okay?”
Ning Yunqing knew someone had told her about the incident with Ning Erbai. Yin Fengxuan was worried she was being exploited by her scumbag father, but she wasn’t that stupid; Ning Erbai wouldn’t get a single cent. She smiled gently and nodded. “I’ll listen to you.”
Yin Fengxuan finally let go of her hands and leaned in close.
At Yin Ziming’s urging, the movie starring Ding Xiaoyao was released a month before the film festival. Making her big-screen debut, Ding Xiaoyao was confident she would become famous. On the day of the premiere, after finishing promotions, she immediately started browsing the web. She expected to see her own popularity exploding, but to her shock, the top trending topic was Ning Yunqing again! This time the tag was “Most Beautiful Princess.”
“Holy shit!” Ding Xiaoyao couldn’t help but spit out a curse. “What the hell? She’s just a bit player; how did she trend?” Looking further down, her heart felt even more stifled. “A bunch of people actually went to see the movie for her? They’re even complaining that I have too many scenes? I’m the lead, she’s a cameo; of course I have more scenes!”
The more she read, the more agitated she became. She couldn’t stand how little discussion there was about her. In a fit of rage, she threw her phone. Seeing it break in half didn’t satisfy her; she stomped on it with her high heels, twisting them into the device while cursing, “Ning Yunqing, don’t get cocky. Ziming promised me he’d buy me a trophy. You’re just a bit player; you’ll just be there to watch me win!”
“Achoo!” Ning Yunqing, who was sitting by the window reading, let out a sneeze. Yin Fengxuan immediately found a shawl to wrap around her, saying dismissively, “A girl is still just a girl; you have no idea how to take care of yourself. Do you have a cold?”
Ning Yunqing shook her head and put her arms around Yin Fengxuan’s waist. “No, someone is probably talking bad about me. It seems this ‘girl’ needs to cling to you more, otherwise, who will take care of me?”
Yin Fengxuan patted her head and teased, “Who was it that said they’d ‘pay their debt with their body’? I shouldn’t have picked you up from school; you just annoy me the moment you get back, making it impossible for me to work.”
“Then I have committed a great sin,” Ning Yunqing confessed with a laugh. “What should I do? I know—Boss, how about I pay my debt with my body right now?”
“You’re so young and already so naughty.” Yin Fengxuan rubbed Ning Yunqing’s face, knocked the troublesome book aside, and pulled her out of the study. “Alright, you’re out of school now; stop devouring books. Let’s change the mood.”
“I’ll listen to you.” Ning Yunqing followed her out. They were headed for the bedroom, but passing through the living room, they saw something on the TV that changed their minds. They sat on the sofa to watch together.
The TV was showing a news report: outside a well-known casino, a delirious man with a face covered in festering sores was crouching on the ground, presumably having lost everything. Onlookers were pointing and gesturing with disgust. When the police tried to move him, he suddenly stood up, pushing and fighting back; he was quite well-built.
Yin Fengxuan felt the figure looked vaguely familiar. Just as she wanted to look closer, Ning Yunqing turned off the TV.
Yin Fengxuan was a bit annoyed. She stood up, but before she could speak, her hand was caught by Ning Yunqing. “Fengxuan, we agreed a change of mood. Don’t you want me to pay my debt?”
The earnest and tender tone made the words incredibly seductive. Yin Fengxuan fell for Ning Yunqing’s trap, lying in her arms as they changed the mood through a “lesson in love.”
