Chapter 10: Entertainment Industry Arc
Yin Fengxuan’s brows knit together. She looked at Ning Yunqing, who made a gesture signifying she should hang up. Though confused, Yin Fengxuan followed Ning Yunqing’s lead. The voice providing the address was cut off abruptly. Ning Yunqing imagined the kidnappers’ expressions at this moment and couldn’t help but smile.
“You’re still in the mood to laugh?” Yin Fengxuan tilted her chin up slightly at her. “Did you call the police?”
Ning Yunqing answered honestly, “No. Let’s eat first; the food will get cold if we don’t sit down.”
Yin Fengxuan glanced at the delicacies on the table and sat in the chair Ning Yunqing had pulled out for her. After a moment’s thought, she asked, “You think it’s a hoax?”
Ning Yunqing nodded, smiling as she served Yin Fengxuan. “Are there really kidnappers that stupid? Do I look like someone who has ten million? Besides, Ning Erbai sounded full of energy on the phone—hardly like someone being mistreated. I bet he’s just out of money and using this method to try and squeeze some out of me.”
These were just Ning Yunqing’s guesses. She wasn’t sure if it was true and, frankly, she didn’t care. For a scumbag father like Ning Erbai, Ning Yunqing actually hoped he would get “killed” by the kidnappers. However, the moment that thought arose, the system alarm blared.
Warning! Warning! Touching the female lead’s bottom line. Please think carefully!
Ning Yunqing gritted her teeth in irritation. This small movement didn’t escape the woman opposite her. Yin Fengxuan thought the girl was simply too kind-hearted to bear the thought of her father being harmed. She stood up, walked to Ning Yunqing’s side, pulled her into a gentle embrace, and patted her back. “Don’t worry,” she cooed. “I’ll investigate it.”
“How do you people handle things?! Where is Ning Yunqing?!” At the Shihua Building, Yin Ziming roared into his phone. He had waited all day for Ning Yunqing, but he hadn’t seen her come crawling to him in tears to beg for help. He was dying of anxiety.
The voice on the other end was timid. “President Yin, we’ve been calling Ning Yunqing all day, but she only picked up twice. Both times she only said ‘Who is it?’ and hung up the moment we threatened her. There’s nothing we can do!”
Yin Ziming frowned in deep thought. To lure Ning Yunqing in, he had investigated Ning Erbai and learned the man was a greedy gambler. He had used money to tempt the man into acting in this play with him, but Ning Yunqing wasn’t biting. What’s going on? Does she not care about her father’s life? Or is the acting so bad she isn’t fooled?
Before he could figure it out, the timid voice spoke again. “President Yin, do you think… Ning Yunqing might have already called the police?”
“Called the police?” Yin Ziming ground his molars. Although he lacked a brain, as the male protagonist of this world, he still had to uphold a bottom line—aside from “forcing himself” on the female lead, he didn’t touch other illegal crimes! But thinking about how much he had done without making Ning Yunqing bow her head made his teeth chatter with rage. Clack, clack, clack.
“President Yin, don’t turn the AC down so low. Look at you, you’re shivering from the cold.”
“…” The concerned voice on the phone sounded like mockery. Yin Ziming barked, “Idiots! Give that man some money and tell him to get lost! You’re afraid he won’t leave? If he won’t leave, you leave!” He smashed his phone down and slumped into his chair, muttering, “Ning Yunqing… Yunqing…”
“Yunqing.” Realizing the Gaokao was tomorrow, Yin Fengxuan worried the girl would be too nervous to sleep and came specifically to see her. As she expected, the girl seemed to treat the exam like a passing whim; otherwise, how could she still be in the mood to study a cookbook at this hour? With a soft sigh, she placed a glass of hot milk on the table and sat down. “Still looking at recipes? What, are you planning to test into the top culinary institute in America?”
Ning Yunqing picked up the milk and shook her head with a smile, lying through her teeth: “Fengxuan, I’m nervous. Looking at recipes helps calm my mood.”
Yin Fengxuan laughed. Her girl’s way of relieving stress was certainly unique. She brushed Ning Yunqing’s long hair back and coaxed, “Be good and go to sleep. Don’t worry about Ning Erbai; I got word that someone saw him at a casino. Besides, it’s only been about four months since you decided to take the exam. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Ignore those gossipy people tomorrow; just treat it as gaining life experience for your acting.”
“Mhm. Thank you, Fengxuan.” Ning Yunqing nodded obediently without defending herself. Instead, she asked hesitantly, “Fengxuan, do you mean there will be media there tomorrow? Then… you won’t be sending me to the exam hall?”
Children here usually had parents to send them off for the Gaokao, some even waiting outside the gates without moving an inch. The girl’s scumbag father certainly wouldn’t go, and she herself wouldn’t show up to avoid rumors. The girl truly was suffering. Yin Fengxuan felt a pang of guilt. Looking at the girl’s expectant face, she apologized softly, “I’ll have someone drive you there.”
Ning Yunqing lowered her eyes, looking visibly disappointed. Yin Fengxuan’s heart panicked. She reached out to pull the “hurt” girl into her arms, wanting to carry her to bed princess-style, but lacking the physical strength, she ended up half-pushing and half-hugging her onto the bed. “Be good, don’t think so much. Once you’re done with the exams, I’ll take you to the Golden Bear Film Festival.”
“Mhm,” Ning Yunqing answered softly, her lowered head still showing traces of being aggrieved. She whispered, “Fengxuan, I want…”
The voice was too soft. Yin Fengxuan leaned down and asked, “What?” At that moment, Ning Yunqing looked up and pressed her lips against Yin Fengxuan’s. After her success, she gave a gentle, captivating smile. “With Fengxuan’s kiss, I’ll definitely get a good score tomorrow.”
The girl looked so beautiful in this state that it was impossible to stay mad. Yin Fengxuan huffed a laugh, tucked her in, and turned off the light. “Then I’ll be waiting.”
“Chao Lu?” A person holding a microphone walked up to Ning Yunqing and greeted her with a smile. “Hello. I’m a reporter from the Nightly News. Could I interview you for a few words?”
Ning Yunqing nodded politely, giving a shy smile to the camera. “Sure, but I have an exam soon, so I can’t talk for long.”
The reporter feigned surprise. “You’re taking the Gaokao… are you planning to apply to a film academy?”
Ning Yunqing shook her head. The reporter asked, “Then do you have a goal in mind?”
Ning Yunqing smiled and replied, “I have a small goal.”
“Is it Tsinghua or Peking University?” the reporter joked.
Ning Yunqing gave a playful smile and waved at the reporter. “They’re starting to let people in. I have to go.”
Stunned by her smile, the reporter froze for a moment before waving back. “Thank you for cooperating. The trailer for Morning Dew looks great. I wish you good luck in achieving your ‘small goal’.”
“Thank you, goodbye.” Ning Yunqing bowed slightly and turned into the exam hall.
This was a clip from today’s trending topic “Ning Yunqing Gaokao.” Aside from those praising her beauty and politeness, there were naturally discordant voices. “‘Small goal’? Tsinghua or Peking? Is she dreaming?” “She missed the arts recruitment; how does she expect to get into a film academy? Tsinghua… haha, nice talk.” “People nowadays are so willful just because they’re pretty. She dropped out of high school, yet she sets her goal as the top-tier universities? Bye Felicia.”
“What a bunch of bored people,” Yin Fengxuan muttered, closing the webpage. She silently decided to lock away all electronic devices for the next few days to prevent her girl from being affected by the rumors.
“Tsinghua or Peking.” Thinking of this “small goal,” Yin Fengxuan couldn’t help but smile. Her girl was certainly ambitious. But it was good for young people to have dreams; she truly hoped a miracle would happen so the girl could get what she wanted.
Half a month later, Yin Fengxuan took Ning Yunqing to the international Golden Bear Film Festival as promised.
As an actress about to walk the red carpet, Ning Yunqing was dressed to the nines: stiletto heels, a black trailing gown, and long hair draped over her shoulders, partially concealing a nearly backless design. She looked elegant with a hint of sexiness. A male actor from the same cast couldn’t help but praise her, “Little Yunqing looks beautiful today.”
Ning Yunqing thanked him warmly; she was always polite to her seniors. It was a common enough scene, but for some reason, Yin Fengxuan felt a twinge of jealousy. She realized her possessiveness toward Ning Yunqing was growing stronger. She couldn’t even stand familiar male actors lingering on Ning Yunqing’s face. With a dark expression, she made an excuse to call Ning Yunqing aside.
“What’s wrong?” Ning Yunqing asked, knowing full well.
Yin Fengxuan glanced at her slightly low-cut neckline and huffed, “Next time, we’re changing stylists.”
Ning Yunqing laughed inwardly and nodded obediently. Just as she was about to tease her, Yin Ziming’s voice came from behind. “Yunqing.”
Ning Yunqing felt a wave of annoyance. She feigned looking to Yin Fengxuan for direction. Yin Fengxuan let out a direct snort and pulled Ning Yunqing away. However, Yin Ziming had already run over, dragging Ding Xiaoyao with him. “Yunqing, you look beautiful today.”
Ding Xiaoyao followed with a compliment, but her smile didn’t reach her eyes.
If this were a typical “Overbearing President Falls for Me” story, Ning Yunqing should have looked bashful and reconciled with the Young Master. Instead, as the female lead, Ning Yunqing simply smiled at him and said, “Apologies, our crew is about to walk the red carpet.” With that, she followed Yin Fengxuan’s lead and walked back to the group.
Yin Ziming stared at her retreating back, dazed. Ding Xiaoyao gritted her teeth in hatred. How dare she try to steal my sugar daddy? Ning Yunqing, just you wait!
