- When the Male Lead Finds Out I’m the Transmigrator Trying to Win Him Over
- Chapter 1 - Wedding Anniversary
I don’t know where things went wrong, but it feels like my husband doesn’t love me anymore.
Today is our third wedding anniversary.
When Yun Ruo woke up in the morning, Meng Tingmo had already gone out. Since she got pregnant, her sleep had become heavier in the mornings because of restless nights, so she didn’t even know when he left.
On the nightstand was a photo of the two of them, taken three years ago. In the photo, Yun Ruo looked straight at the camera with a faint smile, while Meng Tingmo stared unblinkingly at her.
Friends and family teased them about that picture for a long time, saying that Meng Tingmo’s eyes were practically glued to her, that he must be hopelessly in love with her.
Thinking of that, Yun Ruo touched her belly, already round and full in the late stage of pregnancy.
Of course Meng Tingmo loved her. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be married, and they wouldn’t have this child of love.
He was always busy and mentally tense, needing enough rest. But despite her pregnancy, they had never slept in separate rooms—every time she got up at night for water, he got up too, no matter how many times he was woken. He never complained.
He sent her dozens of messages every day, called whenever he had a free moment, and made time every week to be with her.
All in all, he had already done so much.
Yun Ruo couldn’t help but smile happily.
When she finished washing up and left the bedroom, the housekeeper had already prepared breakfast. She mentioned that Meng Tingmo had cooked it: “He made it before leaving—Mr. Meng really treats you so well.”
Since their marriage, Yun Ruo had heard this kind of praise hundreds of times. At first, she felt shy. Now, she was used to it.
“Thank you.” She casually replied, recalling that last night Meng Tingmo said he had two important meetings today, so he might be home late.
Every wedding anniversary before this, he had been with her. But this year, with the company expanding, he truly couldn’t spare the time.
She didn’t really mind. After all, they had a lifetime together—what did one day matter?
A lifetime?
Yun Ruo leaned back in her chair, sunlight pouring through the window. She hadn’t expected that she could think of “a lifetime” so easily.
But it wasn’t without reason.
She thought back to eight years ago.
She wasn’t from this world. To put it simply, this was the world of a book—a parallel world. And she was a transmigrator brought here to “capture” the male lead.
Eight years ago, she was about to die in a car accident in her original world when a system appeared. It told her that this world lacked a female lead, and if she was willing to come here, take on that role, and win the male lead Meng Tingmo’s love, she could be saved.
At the time, she was still in university, her life just beginning. She desperately wanted to live, so she agreed.
The system brought her here, into this body, whose name and appearance were exactly the same as her own, except that the original owner had died.
Also in a car accident—after her heart stopped for a few minutes on the operating table, Yun Ruo’s arrival revived her.
After that, she began a five-year pursuit.
It was a clichéd, old-fashioned plot. The male lead, Meng Tingmo, had a white moonlight he could never forget. She hadn’t gone abroad but lived in the same city, though family grudges kept them apart.
Yun Ruo had never dated before and had to learn everything from scratch. It was exhausting, especially when, in the last two years, the white moonlight joined the battlefield. Many times, she nearly gave up.
But in the end, her persistence paid off. Meng Tingmo finally looked her way, and once he chose her, his heart belonged to her completely. He cared for her meticulously.
Once, she was busy all afternoon and didn’t reply to his messages. Meng Tingmo grew frantic, searching for her in fear something had happened or that she had disappeared.
“I can’t live without you.”
Yun Ruo believed him. So when the system asked if she wanted to return to her original world now that she had succeeded, she refused.
If she returned, this body would immediately die, since the original owner had been gone for eight years.
She couldn’t leave Meng Tingmo alone.
Instead, she used her reward to make this body fully hers, becoming a true person of this world.
As for her ties to her old world… there were none.
She had been a left-behind child in a rural village, her parents long gone to work in the city. She lived only with her grandmother. Her life was farm work—studying—caring for her grandmother—missing her parents, year after year.
Later, her parents had an accident, her grandmother passed away, relatives cut ties. Her family was reduced to only herself.
She endured countless lonely nights in an old house with the wind howling outside.
She lacked love, feared loneliness, longed for a home. She had vowed that if she ever had a child, she would never let them suffer the same fate.
And Meng Tingmo could give her all that.
“My choice was right,” Yun Ruo thought. These three years of marriage, he had given her everything. Many times, she felt deeply grateful that she hadn’t walked away.
But—
Her gaze fell to the spoon shattered on the floor. She had just dropped it by accident.
The housekeeper hurried over to clean it up, while Yun Ruo stepped aside, pressing a hand to her chest. She didn’t know why, but the sound of the spoon breaking had startled her so badly her heart was racing.
There was nothing to panic about. She took a deep breath, telling herself it was probably just pregnancy hormones.
After all, Meng Tingmo had just messaged her to ask if she had eaten.
Replying to him, she decided to go for a walk.
With bodyguards following, there was nothing to fear. She just didn’t want to sit at home overthinking.
She strolled into a baby store. The baby already had everything, but Yun Ruo couldn’t help but buy more whenever she saw something.
Her friend He Xitong and her younger brother Yun Jia often sent gifts too. He Xitong even insisted she’d be the child’s godmother. Yun Ruo gladly agreed.
Unlike herself, her child was already surrounded by love, even before being born.
Subconsciously, she touched her belly, feeling calmer.
Until her gaze froze on someone entering the store.
A striking woman—confident, flamboyant, tall, stylish, earrings swaying as she walked.
Jiang Yufei.
Meng Tingmo’s former white moonlight.
It had been a long time since Yun Ruo had seen her. Three years ago, after the wedding, Jiang Yufei went abroad and had no contact since. Meng Tingmo had never mentioned her again.
So why now did Yun Ruo’s heart feel so unsettled?
“Yun Ruo, long time no see.” Jiang Yufei smiled naturally, like they were old friends. “I thought I saw someone familiar outside, so I came in. Didn’t expect it really was you.”
Her eyes lowered to Yun Ruo’s belly. She spoke meaningfully: “Looks like the baby’s almost here. It must be tough—being a mom isn’t easy.”
Yun Ruo stepped back. Jiang Yufei gave her a bad feeling, though in the past, nothing ugly had ever happened between them.
They had both loved Meng Tingmo, but neither had played dirty.
But now…
“When did you come back?” Yun Ruo asked calmly. “We didn’t hear anything.”
“A couple days ago,” Jiang Yufei smiled. “A friend’s getting married, I came back to be her bridesmaid.”
“Congratulations to your friend.” Yun Ruo said no more. They weren’t exactly in a chatting mood.
Fortunately, Jiang Yufei didn’t linger either. After a few words, she turned to leave—but not before saying, “Mothers need to be strong. Raising a child alone is hard.”
Alone?
She had Meng Tingmo. Why would she be alone?
But Jiang Yufei said nothing more.
Frowning, Yun Ruo lost interest in shopping and went home.
At 5 p.m., Meng Tingmo messaged her that the meeting was wrapping up and he’d be home around 6.
Relieved, Yun Ruo asked the housekeeper to prepare dinner. They’d just eat at home tonight.
But by 6:30, he still hadn’t come back.
Pacing anxiously, she tried calling him, but he didn’t answer. Messages went unread.
That faint dread returned, stronger this time. She was about to contact his assistant when the assistant called her first.
“President Meng was in a car accident. Please don’t panic—I’m on the way to the hospital now. I’ll update you right away.”
Car accident?
That word cut into her like a knife. Her legs gave out, and she almost collapsed if not for the housekeeper catching her. After steadying herself, she immediately ordered the driver to take her to the hospital.
Why was there always a car accident?
With the baby so close to being born, she couldn’t even imagine what she’d do if something happened to Meng Tingmo. Thankfully, halfway there, the assistant updated her that Meng Tingmo was fine—just a concussion, unable to look at his phone. Relief washed over her.
But traffic was terrible. By the time she arrived, he had already been taken to a hospital room.
He was uncomfortable from the concussion, but when he heard she was coming, he forced himself awake, smiling to reassure her: “I’m fine, sorry to make you worry.”
Handsome as ever, with the commanding aura of a CEO, yet the moment he saw Yun Ruo, all the coldness melted into tenderness.
Yun Ruo rushed to hug him.
Only now did she realize how terrified she had been. Her whole body was weak and numb.
Thank goodness he was okay.
She pulled back and tucked the blanket around him. “Rest first. Everything else can wait.”
He looked guilty. “Today’s our anniversary…”
“It doesn’t matter,” Yun Ruo held his hand. “We’ll have plenty more.”
He nodded, tightened his grip on her hand, and soon fell asleep, unable to fight the dizziness anymore.
Sitting at his bedside, Yun Ruo smoothed the furrow between his brows. Then she messaged the assistant, asking about the accident.
The assistant explained that another car’s brakes had failed, crashing into Meng Tingmo’s. The other driver fainted on the spot and was also in the same hospital.
“How is the driver?” Yun Ruo asked.
“I haven’t checked yet, but…”
The assistant hesitated. “The driver was Jiang Yufei.”
Yun Ruo froze.
Shock replaced fear. She had only just learned Jiang Yufei was back that afternoon. Now, in the evening, Meng Tingmo was in the hospital—because she had hit him.
Especially after those strange things she had said earlier.
For a moment, Yun Ruo wondered if it had been deliberate.
But right now, Meng Tingmo was her priority. She pushed Jiang Yufei from her mind, asked the assistant to fetch a blanket, and prepared to stay overnight in the hospital.
That night, her sleep was uneasy.
At dawn, the faint morning light woke her.
Rubbing her forehead, she turned to the bed—only to see Meng Tingmo already awake, staring at her with a cold, expressionless gaze.
“When did you wake up? How are you feeling?” She leaned in, wanting to touch his face.
But in the next second, her hand froze.
Meng Tingmo turned away, dodging her touch.
Her fingers trembled. She couldn’t process it.
He had always leaned into her hand before.
The anxiety she had been suppressing since yesterday finally erupted.
When she looked into his eyes, there was no trace of last night’s tenderness.
Only a chilling, bone-deep coldness.
