Chapter 5: Course Selection. What a Dream Come True.
“Do you really want to see?” Yan Xiangyu looked hesitant, wanting to speak yet holding back.
“Forget it.” Shu Qiong thought of this person’s audacity and history of taking advantage, giving up. “I respect your privacy.”
Hearing her refusal, Yan Xiangyu felt relieved but also a little disappointed.
They met at the tender age of first love. Both were exceptionally talented and bright teenagers. Even if it ended in a breakup, the memories would still rush in during the quiet of the night.
Shu Qiong felt she was incredibly bold back then. Not only did she date before differentiation, but her partner was also Yan Xiangyu, a female primary gender like herself.
She couldn’t quite recall the specific reason for the breakup. They were both too young and immature then, wearing their emotions on their sleeves. Most arguments stemmed from trivial little frictions and disagreements.
At that time, Shu Qiong was in the sensitive and vulnerable stage before differentiation. Coincidentally, Yan Xiangyu was also transferring schools. One was confined to bed and moody, the other was busy non-stop, and then Shu Qiong’s lunatic father interfered, causing their arguments to skyrocket.
In her senior year, Yan Xiangyu transferred back to her hometown to prepare for the college entrance exam. She was different from Shu Qiong. Shu Qiong, growing up with a wealthy young lady like Jin Yan, naturally came from a prominent background. She was a native-born heiress of the Capital Star, not to mention her mother, an Omega Mecha Engineer and Solo Combat expert whose name was in textbooks.
In contrast, Shu Qiong was plagued by the melodrama of a wealthy family from childhood: a legendary but prematurely deceased genius mother, and a good-for-nothing phoenix-man father who married into the family. This resulted in her being particularly emo during adolescence.
Yan Xiangyu, on the other hand, was the only child of an ordinary family from a remote star system, with simple and harmonious family relations.
In contrast, they seemed to be from different worlds.
The naive and irritable teenagers had too little life experience and couldn’t truly empathize with each other’s difficulties. Predictably, they ended things unhappily, barely a peaceful breakup.
They broke up, but both were left with lingering, ‘first love’ sentiments.
Shu Qiong glanced at Yan Xiangyu, sighing at the workings of fate. Who would have thought that in university, she would once again be roommates with her first ex-girlfriend?
“Ding-dong.”
Gu Tiantian, seeing them procrastinating for so long, thought they were just shy and proactively created a four-person dorm group chat.
F-Building Room 406, hence—
[Military Uni F (4)]
What a embarrassing group name!
Shu Qiong was impressed, finding the soul of a silly geek hidden beneath Gu Tiantian’s obedient and shy exterior.
Su Heyi immediately followed up by posting several documents in the group, all of which were her pre-made guides for military university freshmen, comprehensive and detailed.
Shu Qiong praised her profusely: “So much practical info! Sister Heyi, your preparation is meticulous.”
Su Heyi smiled warmly: “You flatter me. I just searched for some experience posts from upperclassmen.”
This gentle, strong sister was so reliable. Shu Qiong immediately felt a liking for her: “Sister Heyi, are you the freshman legend who scored perfect on all physical tests?”
Students applying to the Mecha Department of the military university must undergo specialized physical tests that rigorously check their physical fitness from head to toe.
It was said that the high scores designed by the school were aimed at exploring human potential. It was good enough to just meet the standards for each item, let alone get a perfect score. Thus, the hashtag #MilitaryUniMechaPhysTestPerverted was brought up every enrollment season to complain on the star-net hot search, claiming the school was recruiting Super Saiyans, not students.
However, informed sources leaked the news that a freshman girl this year had broken the military university’s physical test record!
Su Heyi nodded: “Yes. I just have the advantage of being physically strong and durable. Other subjects aren’t very good, haha.”
Although her academic scores were only slightly above average, her outstanding physical test results propelled her to second place in the overall professional score.
Student Yan, who was first in the specialization, said she was too humble: “That’s already very impressive.”
Yan Xiangyu was a well-rounded, six-sided warrior who never knew how to fail a subject since childhood, passing every class with high marks.
Shu Qiong was a little envious.
She realized there were significant differences between Alphas. For example, she was the complete opposite of Su Heyi.
Her physical fitness was decent, but it was far from outstanding compared to the Mecha Department elites. She relied entirely on her academic scores. She had an unusually good performance in the college entrance exam, directly claiming the Capital Star’s top student title. That night, she received a special recruitment call from the military university.
The slightly academically weak Gu Tiantian’s admiration and excitement were beyond words.
Oh my Queen Mother, you’ve never discussed such high-level topics with me!
Deep breath, inhale the aura of the academic gods.
Just before 3 PM, an alarm clock went off.
Shu Qiong turned it off. The exciting time for course selection was approaching.
She had carefully studied the Mecha Department’s student training manual. There were several large, year-level courses in the first semester.
“Sister Heyi, what are you choosing for the second period on Monday afternoon?” Shu Qiong asked Su Heyi, feigning calmness. “I heard ‘Theoretical Basis of Coupling Components’ and ‘History of Mecha Warfare’ both give good grades.”
Yan Xiangyu: “I’m signing up for History of Mecha Warfare.”
“…” Shu Qiong pretended not to hear and turned her head to wait for Su Heyi’s answer.
Su Heyi did hear and once again demonstrated the completeness of her research: “Professor Wang, who teaches History of Mecha Warfare, has a good reputation among upperclassmen. He explains things deeply but simply, referencing a wide range of topics. It’s not dry or boring. It’s just that the final exam questions are quite detailed. I heard he likes to test content that wasn’t in the textbook but was mentioned verbally in class, which requires a high degree of concentration during lectures.”
Shu Qiong immediately decided: “Then let’s both sign up for that! We can borrow each other’s notes, and it’ll be easier to save seats.”
Yan Xiangyu: “Mhm.”
Su Heyi’s slightly surprised gaze swept between them. She was unable to match Gu Tiantian’s book-smart, Internet-savvy insight but readily agreed: “Sounds good.”
So, the three continued to choose the remaining three or four large classes in this seemingly harmonious yet subtle way. Shu Qiong satisfiedly returned to her room, logged into her student account, turned off all distracting notifications, and prepared her internet speed and hand speed.
She successfully finished course selection at 3 o’clock sharp and casually scrolled through the forum. Sure enough, a large number of posts wailing and begging for course swaps popped up. Shu Qiong quickly exited after a couple of glances, suddenly realizing she had forgotten something.
She opened her notifications, and an avalanche of “You have a new message” alerts bombarded her.
Jin Yan: “woc! I forgot I had to select courses this afternoon!”
Jin Yan: “Daughter!!! Quickly send me your course schedule so I can copy it! [Cat head peering out]”
Jin Yan: “Hello? [Sudden check-in] [Checking up]”
Jin Yan: “Where are you, damn it!”
Jin Yan: “Our bond is fading 1551 [Biting handkerchief] Are you busy comparing schedules with your Student Yan and forgot about your old mother!”
Jin Yan: “How dare you, Shu Qiong! You prioritize romance over friendship! Have you forgotten the beautiful time we spent playing in the mud together!”
Shu Qiong felt guilty and quickly typed to salvage her rapidly sinking friendship with Miss Jin.
“Knock, knock.”
The knocking was close by. Shu Qiong, flustered, looked up and was startled by Yan Xiangyu, who had been standing behind her for who knows how long.
Her frantic finger slipped across the floating keyboard, hitting a few characters and sending the unfinished line of text plus a string of nonsensical garbage directly.
Shu Qiong: I’m sorry, Miss! I set my bracelet to silent and didn’t hear it!
Jin Yan: Waaah! My daughter is all grown up and doesn’t need her mother. She’s even giving me perfunctory excuses [Crying]
Shu Qiong: I really turned on silent. I’m not perfunctory when eating when eating when eating when eating when eating with Student Yan
Jin Yan replied instantly: ?
There were too many things to address. Undoing the message was pointless.
Shu Qiong slowly closed her eyes.
“Will you believe me if I say it was an accident?” Yan Xiangyu looked utterly innocent. “I came to tell you that we just got a notice that tomorrow’s opening ceremony has been moved to tonight.”
“Got it,” Shu Qiong mumbled glumly.
“Go eat if you’re hungry,” Yan Xiangyu held back a smile. “What do you want to eat? My treat.”
Shu Qiong: “…I’m, not, hungry!”
She angrily turned off the input method’s predictive text feature.
Another example of technology causing trouble.
She stubbornly refused to reflect on her own actions, choosing to flee.
She spent the entire evening in self-imposed isolation.
The opening ceremony was tedious and dull, with the same old procedures. The leaders’ passionate speeches, raving about the glorious history of the Alliance Military University, could not burn away Shu Qiong’s memory of her recent embarrassing black history.
When it was the student representative’s turn to speak, Shu Qiong walked onto the stage looking deflated and began to recite her speech expressionlessly.
She had prepared and memorized the script long ago. It flowed fluently, but her tone was that of an emotionless robot.
Even so, the sleepy freshmen in the audience showed great enthusiasm. Many woke up from their doze, raising their bracelets to snap photos.
Shu Qiong briefly mustered some spirit and gave a very official smile. Then she saw Jin Yan in the audience, holding professional camera equipment and relentlessly clicking away.
As soon as their eyes met, Jin Yan made an exaggerated “eating” gesture, retaliating for her friend’s “prioritizing romance over friendship” behavior that afternoon.
“…Finally, I thank the school for giving me this opportunity to share with you.”
Shu Qiong’s face was twitching. She struggled to suppress the urge to laugh, “I wish all students a wonderful and exciting military university campus life in the next four years. Hehe.”
The ceremony planning teacher: “…Was ‘hehe’ in the speech script?”
A student council member turned to observe the audience’s reaction: “Maybe Student Shu was improvising. The effect is quite good; all the students are awake now.”
The planning teacher: “Quick, seize the opportunity to take more photos of the freshmen ‘seriously participating in the ceremony’ and ‘applauding enthusiastically.'”
The leaders in the front row: “…”
Jin Yan: “Pfft.”
She was hysterical with laughter. She stopped taking photos and gave her camera to the upperclassman responsible for documenting the ceremony, then ran to the backstage to wait for Shu Qiong.
As soon as Shu Qiong got off the stage, she rushed toward Jin Yan with a murderous look. The two brawled backstage.
“Hehe.” Shu Qiong stood with her arms crossed.
“Hehe~” Jin Yan countered aggressively.
“Shu Qiong,” Yan Xiangyu walked into the backstage lounge.
Shu Qiong and Jin Yan immediately stood at attention, putting on serious faces.
Shu Qiong said solemnly: “Is there something you need?”
Yan Xiangyu was helpless: “It’s over. Everyone else has left. Are you planning to sleep here tonight?”
“Oh, right, let’s go.”
Shu Qiong walked out of the lounge and realized Su Heyi and Gu Tiantian were following Yan Xiangyu.
“Hi~” Jin Yan, seeing others present, immediately put on a dignified facade. “I forgot to introduce myself this afternoon. My name is Jin Yan. Nice to meet you all~”
Shu Qiong’s face twisted as she looked at her friend, who was acting like a decent human being.
Jin Yan, oblivious, continued to socialize: “Speaking of which, I was originally in Room 406 too.”
Shu Qiong: Yes. Thank goodness she moved out to a single dorm later. Otherwise, I’d be driven crazy.
Gu Tiantian quickly said: “Then I really have to thank you. Otherwise, I’d still be climbing eight flights of stairs to the top floor.”
“Ho-ho, we’re all roommates, don’t be strangers!” Jin Yan said sincerely. “Betas are so convenient. They can live in both Omega and Alpha dorms, and they aren’t bothered by pheromones daily.”
Gu Tiantian adjusted her glasses, smiling shyly.
Jin Yan’s true nature started to show when she talked too much: “I wish I were a Beta. Then I could live with the Omega girls, sigh.”
“…” Shu Qiong was used to it and couldn’t be bothered to comment.
Unexpectedly, Yan Xiangyu, who was usually at odds with Jin Yan, actually responded, blurting out: “I wish you a dream come true.”
Her tone sounded quite sincere. But the content of the words sounded strange no matter how you heard it.
Shu Qiong was bewildered.
What a dream come true.
Was she suggesting a sex change or transforming into a pervert and storming the Omega dorms?
