- What Should I Do After Picking Up the "Dragon Proud Sky" Protagonist as a Pet? (Transmigration)
- Chapter 5 - Why is This Giant Moth Such a Crybaby?!
Mist shrouded the entirety of the Dawn Forest. Within the gloom, a dark mage stepped out from a magic circle. His name was Crane. He held a staff, wore magical robes, and the ring on his finger reflected the luster of a mana stone. His long, grey hair swayed in the wind.
His hair possessed a fine, scale-like grey sheen. The magic sigils resting in his palm twisted and swirled before transforming into a flash of spiritual light that struck down a nearby magical beast. Crane was a dark mage who practiced Soul-Binding magic. As a major branch of magic, the systems derived from the dark arts are numerous, most of which are established on a foundation of dark-elemental mana. Pure dark magic cannot be used to judge a person’s good or evil, but Soul-Binding magic is an exception. This is because it requires only one type of material for cultivation: the souls and thoughts of living beings.
Consequently, Soul-Binding mages either act in the shadows under the protection of nobles or hide away in remote places to plot in secret. Once they successfully promote to the rank of Law Saint, they rapidly become notorious “Soul-Snatchers,” fearsome and loathsome blights upon the world.
This particular Soul-Binding mage was a newly promoted Law Venerable. He had set his sights on Blackthorn City and had secretly claimed many lives, including those of seemingly high-ranking nobles and knights. Su Feng had been searching for his trail for a long time; however, the mage was extremely cunning and stayed hidden within his Mage Tower. Due to Su Feng’s abysmal luck, he had repeatedly brushed past the dark mage without finding him.
Crane wasn’t originally supposed to appear here, but his expression was currently dark with rage because his experiment had escaped.
That experimental subject was incredibly strange. Not only did it possess extraordinarily powerful luck, but it had even used a bizarre, unseen power to counterattack him while under his soul-snatching curse. Afterward, it transformed into a strange, weak animal and fled the Mage Tower. Left with no choice, Crane had to step out of his tower to track the trail left by the subject. The creature possessed extraordinary magic power, and Crane was unwilling to let it go, nor did he intend to ask his mentor for help.
“That is the perfect specimen and sacrifice,” Crane thought resentfully. “It is best if I do not find out who has been meddling behind my back.”
He tapped the gemstone atop his staff, and a soul-bound figure drifted out. It was a Wraith formed from the memories and souls of the deceased. The figure drifted in a specific direction, guiding Crane toward his destination. The trail of blood extended all the way until it abruptly vanished. In the vast Dawn Forest, no physical tracks could be found, yet traces of other living beings remained.
Crane pulled out a small vial, a flash of pain at the cost crossing his pale face. He threw the vial, and the images of figures who had previously passed through this area began to manifest. The first to appear was a woman riding a magical horse, Vina.
“Who is this?” Crane asked.
“The City Lord’s daughter, Vina,” the Wraith replied.
Other figures appeared in the images one after another. Su Feng’s silhouette flashed by, causing the expression on Crane’s face to grow even gloomier. He recognized the man instantly. He did not care about Su Feng’s status; he only cared about his strength. Su Feng was a Sword Venerable of the same rank as himself.
Back in the room, after Su Feng had calmed his excitement, he prepared to go to bed. Thoughts of the system, the male lead, and his Magic-Refractory Constitution swirled through his head. Su Feng’s nerves, which had been taut all day, were a mix of lingering excitement and deep exhaustion. He decided to get some proper rest.
For a while now, he had been pursuing the trail of the dark mage, but the clues always seemed to cut off mysteriously halfway, as if someone were interfering. Tomorrow, he might consider requesting outside help. He wondered if guilds in other cities would accept his commission.
Su Feng’s eyelids felt heavy; he truly was tired. The handsome man rubbed his eyes, nuzzled into his pillow, and pulled up the covers to sleep. But for some reason, he felt like he was forgetting something very important.
“Buzz!”
A faint vibration echoed near his ear, like something fluffy flying around in the air. Since Su Feng was facing the wall, he could not see what was flying behind him. He was still trying to remember what he had forgotten. But what was it?
“Buzz buzz buzz!”
Flap, flap. A giant moth wiggled its wings, flying unsteadily toward the mound of blankets on the bed. The scales falling from its wings looked like a layer of shimmering, fine crystal powder. The moth’s wings were massive; though the trailing wing-tails were only short prototypes, they already hinted at a breathtaking, fluttering beauty. The comb-like antennae on its forehead swayed in the air. This large moth, wearing a tiny crown, groomed its antennae with its fluffy legs before landing on the human like a giant ball of solid marshmallow.
The half-asleep Su Feng reached out dizzily to touch it. Feeling only a soft, squishy sensation, he assumed it was a plush toy on the bed. He gave it a squeeze and tossed it aside.
The moth looked at him unhappily, flapping its wings harder as if giving a loud reminder. After a moment, seeing that the human still had no intention of paying attention, the giant moth crawled up the “little hill” of blankets in a huff. It crawled all the way to Su Feng’s neck, nearing the spot where its scent remained. Like a small animal, it nuzzled against Su Feng’s skin, then gave him a fluffy hug, preparing to go to sleep as well.
“What is that? It tickles.” Su Feng felt an itch on his neck. He grabbed the thing that was burrowing into his shoulder. The texture in his hand was as delicate as fine fur. He lifted it up to take a look and saw a giant moth wiggling its butt in his palm.
“What the heck!” Su Feng threw it onto the bed. He sat up instinctively, only then remembering the situation: he could not let anyone know about the male lead yet, nor could he let Murphy go out looking like that, so he had locked the giant moth in the room. And it had just tried to crawl in and sleep with him!
Is this logical?
This is not logical at all!
Su Feng stared at the large black moth. For a moment, he actually saw expressions of grievance, fawning, and pitiable longing in those eyes. It was exactly like a big family dog that wanted to get on the bed but was pushed away, intentionally putting on a begging face with drooping eyes. He wondered how he was seeing “puppy eyes” on a moth!
Su Feng still was not clear on what exactly this blood contract did. Everything that had happened so far had not appeared in the plot he had read, nor did it fit common sense. However, he could genuinely feel a vague sense of closeness and reliance from the giant moth. It was as if it instinctively wanted to be near him and depend on him. The blood contract between them forced a connection.
But that was no excuse for a giant moth to be in his bed.
Su Feng saw the moth’s antennae quiver playfully. It then raised its two front legs and made a pitiable, bowing gesture as if praying. Su Feng reached out a hand, grabbed the marshmallow creature, and tossed it onto the small side bed nearby.
“Stay down there,” Su Feng told it. “You, you originally wanted to turn me into a servant and a puppet. We were total strangers, yet you treated me like that. You are evil and bad, you understand?”
The fat moth had not expected this development. With half its body hanging off the edge of the small bed, it peeked at Su Feng in confusion. Su Feng continued, “So you can only sleep there.”
“Do not come near me!” Su Feng warned harshly. He brushed off the scales that had settled on him, could not help but sneeze a few times, and rubbed his nose as he continued, “If you dare crawl onto the bed again, I will, I will whip you again!”
Having said his piece, Su Feng burrowed back into his covers, ready to resume his sleep. But just then, the giant moth wiggled its antennae, staring at the person on the bed while fluttering its wings, trying to fly over secretly. It looked like an overweight, clumsy thief trying to sneak through the night. But at that moment, Su Feng said without even looking up, “Want to get hit again?”
The fat moth’s body froze, and it flew back dejectedly. It twitched its antennae, looking at its empty, cold little bed, and then at the warm human on the main bed. It thought of the warmth it had just gathered from the human; it was like a bright light in the dark attracting its attention. Moreover, there was clearly an incredibly tight, unbreakable bond between them. They were supposed to be the closest of entities, yet now, the human was rejecting it.
“Buzz!”
“Buzz buzz buzz!”
A giant moth incessantly complaining in a room is quite exhausting, right?
Su Feng had no intention of responding; he even closed his eyes to continue sleeping. The moth kept calling out, trying to win back the human’s heart, but Su Feng would not even look at it. The sounds grew lower and softer. Finally, after the moth had been crying out for half an hour until its voice was nearly hoarse, the continuous noise suddenly vanished.
For a moment, Su Feng was not even used to it. It was too quiet; it was so quiet it felt strange.
But beneath that silence, it felt as though a wordless stream was flowing. Su Feng frowned and turned to take a look. That single glance made him freeze for a second.
The pitch-black moth was sprawled on the small bed, stubbornly refusing to sleep. Its wings were draped awkwardly to the sides, and the antennae on its head were drooping so low they looked like they were fishing for the center of the earth. It lay motionless on the bed, its eyes still fixed on Su Feng’s direction, while tears dripped steadily from its two large eyes. It had almost soaked the small blanket beneath it.
The giant moth looked like a pet dog that had been kicked, suddenly thrown out of the house, feeling bewildered and incredulous.
It stayed in place, its body unmoving like a stiff statue, just crying continuously.
It simply could not understand why.
“Good grief,” Su Feng’s eye twitched, and he felt a splitting headache. He really could not reconcile this moth with the dominant and dangerous protagonist who had appeared at the start. What on earth was going on?
Su Feng truly could not understand it, but seeing the moth cry like that made him feel like he was abusing a small animal. He could clash blades with the protagonist without blinking, but facing a creature like this, he really could not bring himself to be cruel.
Su Feng rubbed his temples and sighed. “Why do you absolutely have to sleep with me?” Was it not afraid of being crushed into a marshmallow pancake if he rolled over in the night?
Seeming to sense the softening in Su Feng’s tone, the giant moth was overjoyed. It stopped crying instantly and seized the opportunity to bolt like a little rocket into Su Feng’s arms. It let out a few delighted buzzes. Su Feng was truly exhausted; holding this giant body pillow, his eyelids grew heavier. He patted its backside and said, “Sleep, just go to sleep.”
As soon as the man’s head hit the pillow, he fell fast asleep.
In the quiet night, the moth in Su Feng’s arms originally wiggled its antennae happily, enjoying Su Feng’s embrace and his warmth. But for some reason, its body began to emit a strange purple light. Its form stretched and twisted in an instant, finally revealing a human shape with black hair.
The horrific wounds on Murphy’s body had mostly healed. When he opened his eyes, an eerie purple glow flashed through the room. Those demonic purple eyes reflected the silhouette of the person before him. Murphy’s thoughts were muddled; he only vaguely remembered escaping the Mage Tower, entering the Dawn Forest, and then meeting someone.
And on this person, a contract linking them had mysteriously appeared.
This person will not hurt me for now.
Murphy instinctively remembered these things. Once he determined he was safe, his eyelids closed over those magnificent purple eyes. The tall, long-limbed figure pressed down on the bed. He instinctively reached out and pulled Su Feng into his arms. Their sizes allowed them to fit together seamlessly. Even in his sleep, Murphy instinctively pinned the arms and legs of the person in his embrace, and reached out to grip Su Feng’s throat.
It was a position of absolute safety, but also one that could deliver a fatal blow in an instant.
His features relaxed, the furrow between his brows finally smoothing out completely as he fell asleep holding the warm human.
