- Chapter 4 - The Overpowered Protagonist is Dying: To Save Him or Not?
The massive, fluffy moth in front of him continued to buzz incessantly.
A layer of cold sweat broke out on Su Feng’s forehead. His limbs felt weak, and a bleeding tooth mark remained on his neck. He gasped like a small animal that had just narrowly escaped the jaws of a fierce beast, his chest still tight with lingering terror.
“What just happened?”
As this thought flashed through his mind, he saw the giant moth wiggle its backside and buzz, attempting to fly toward him. Su Feng’s waist flared with a dull, stiff ache, as if his body still remembered the sensation of being imprisoned by the man’s grip. The stinging on his neck combined with his overall weakness eventually ignited a rising flame of anger in his heart.
“What a wicked creature!”
A cold sneer appeared on his face. With a swift wave of his hand, he slapped the giant black moth down.
With a sharp thwack, the moth slammed heavily onto the ground. Its wings fluttered like torn scraps of paper. After a few weak buzzes, it suddenly stopped moving altogether.
“Get up!” Su Feng watched the scene, wondering if he had knocked the protagonist unconscious. However, he remained hesitant and did not dare to move. He was still shaken by what had happened, but the posture the moth had just taken was unmistakable. It had looked almost pleasing, even somewhat fawning.
He looked doubtfully at the blood contract on his wrist. The freshly formed contract still glowed with a vibrant crimson light, tightly entwining him with Morpheus. Suddenly, the patterns of the blood contract dimmed for a moment. Su Feng’s heart skipped a beat, and an indescribable wave of sorrow surged within him, as if something deeply connected to his own life force was dying.
Su Feng looked over in surprise.
The giant moth remained motionless on the ground as a pool of blood slowly spread beneath it. Su Feng felt wetness on his skin and looked down to see the blood Morpheus had left on him when he approached earlier.
According to the original plot, Morpheus had just escaped from the mage tower and fled here. He was severely injured and had lost his memory, which forced him to revert to his original form. He was not faking; he was truly dying.
Su Feng’s brow furrowed. At this moment, the blood contract tightened, radiating a sense of danger and urgency. As the patterns dimmed further, they extended toward his heart like thorns sinking into his bone. Su Feng did not know what would happen if this continued, but he sensed danger and a rising feeling of anxiety.
Should he save him? He was no saint. This guy had tried to strangle him the moment they met, intending to turn him into a puppet and servant. Saving such a malicious protagonist felt like a real-life version of The Farmer and the Viper. Besides, he still had a bleeding wound on his neck.
But could he just watch the other person bleed to death? Su Feng’s gaze was complex. Just as he was weightng his options, the System’s voice appeared at the perfect moment.
[Achieved one intimate contact with the protagonist. Gained 200 Intimacy Points. Intimacy can be exchanged for Luck Points to unlock world restrictions.]
[This deduction will cost 50 Intimacy Points:]
- Save Morpheus (86% success rate)
- Leave immediately (58% success rate)
The System’s words echoed in Su Feng’s mind, reminding him of something important. He needed contact with Morpheus to gain Intimacy Points. He could not let Morpheus die, nor could he leave him behind!
With that thought, his hesitation vanished. He walked over with newfound justification, picked up the fluffy, blood-soaked moth, and took out a potion from his spatial ring to feed it.
“I am just using him. I do not want to save him at all,” he told himself.
Su Feng searched for the moth’s mouth but could not find it. He had to curl the moth into a circle and straighten its proboscis to dip it into the potion. The moth weakly drew in the liquid, and its wings finally began to flutter slightly. They looked like broken fans. Upon closer inspection, its soft fur was drenched in blood, feeling like wet fur coats. Su Feng instinctively gave it a gentle stroke, and the fur felt silky and luxurious.
The giant moth’s antennae were limp and drooping, only trembling slightly now. Even the small crown on its head had lost its luster. Gradually, as the potion took effect, its body regained some vitality. The once dull, massive eyes slowly brightened like glowing purple pearls, reflecting only Su Feng’s image.
It gazed at Su Feng, seemingly aware that the man was stroking it. With some effort, it lifted its body and rubbed its marshmallow-soft form against his palm.
Su Feng subconsciously held his breath. In this simple touch, he did not see the powerful and terrifying monster from before, but a small pet that relied on and loved its master. How did such a contrast exist? Morpheus had established the blood contract himself, but why did he do it?
Thinking back, the way the moth had flown toward him and buzzed its wings was clearly the behavior of a domestic dog fawning over its owner. Su Feng’s eye twitched. If this moth had a tail, it would likely be wagging it like a propeller.
The overpowered male lead is wagging his tail at me?
The thought sent a chill down Su Feng’s spine, and he quickly discarded it. It was too frightening.
However, if he separated the moth from the man Morpheus, he actually quite liked the little marshmallow spirit in front of him. The moth gripped his finger with its fluffy little claws, seemingly holding no grudge for the slap earlier. It just focused intently on him.
Those rounded compound eyes watched him with a gaze that seemed to transcend time and space, reflecting only his image. Su Feng’s heart softened. Whether it was the blood contract or some unknown setting, he felt a sense of closeness from the moth, like dandelion fluff landing on his heart.
The moth did not answer. It simply wiggled its backside and burrowed into Su Feng’s shoulder. After settling there, it tiredly groomed its antennae and rubbed its claws around, looking for a comfortable place to sleep. Perhaps because his actions had finalized his choice, the System spoke.
[After choosing to save Morpheus, you take him back to Blackthorn City. You discover that through intimate contact with Morpheus, the restrictions placed on you by the World Consciousness are gradually dissolving. Your Pseudo-Anti-Magic Physique is changing. Due to this change, you successfully avoid the scrutiny of the Temple. You realize you must keep Morpheus by your side. To do so, you forge an identity for him, making him your personal servant.]
Su Feng’s breath hitched. His eyes sparkled, and he completely ignored the giant moth huddling against his neck. He was entirely captivated by the System’s words.
“You mean my Anti-Magic Physique is fake?” Su Feng’s voice was hoarse.
[Remaining Intimacy: 150. Can be exchanged for Luck Points to lift restrictions.]
Su Feng’s heart hammered harder than ever before. No one understood what this meant better than he did. An Anti-Magic Physique did not mean one could not absorb mana; it meant one could not establish a connection with it or summon the mana of this world.
This was the lowest, most hopeless constitution on the Aurora Continent. Su Feng was unable to use any magic, which was a dead end for anyone. He had been forced to practice martial arts, but even then, the mana permeating the world rejected him, making his progress incredibly difficult. He had become a laughingstock.
But now, the System was telling him he did not have an Anti-Magic Physique. It was simply the World Consciousness rejecting and imprisoning him as an outsider.
Su Feng’s eyes grew moist. His expression was a mix of tears and laughter. In the deserted forest, he quietly processed this news. The giant moth on his shoulder affectionately rubbed against his warm skin, sensing his low mood and buzzing softly. Su Feng looked at the moth and felt both amused and touched. Under these circumstances, only this moth had seen his vulnerable state.
“If you were still in human form, I would have to silence you to protect my secret,” Su Feng said jokingly. His mood improved, and he quickly gathered his emotions. He flicked the moth’s waving antennae and decided to tuck it into his pocket before riding back to camp.
The giant moth, like a heavy, fluffy marshmallow, was stuffed into his clothes. It gripped his fabric tightly with its claws and buzzed in confusion. As Su Feng galloped on his magic horse, he felt the world was moving too fast and yet too slow. On the way, he could not contain his excitement and spoke to the System.
“As long as I get Intimacy Points, I can lift my restrictions?” This meant he had to stay by Morpheus’s side constantly.
[Do not worry. After completing enough deductions, you can unlock new functions to solve this problem once and for all.]
[But until then, you must stay with Morpheus,] the System reminded him. [Only the Luck Points on him can allow you to escape the shackles of the World Consciousness because he is the sole center of this world, while you are a complete outsider.]
“It is like using his influence to shield me?” Su Feng looked at the moth curled up in his arms. He found it both cute and terrifying. He smiled bitterly. “How can I stay by his side forever? He is the protagonist and a ruthless madman. If he finds out, he will skin me alive.”
“Furthermore, wherever the male lead goes, nothing grows and disasters follow. He is a bigger threat than any fictional detective.” Su Feng calmed down as he spoke. He could not just look at the benefits without considering the risks. Morpheus was the only one who could solve his physique issue. He had to seize this chance.
The System’s focus was strange. [God of Death? Do not worry. Even a God of Death designated by the Scrolls of Fate cannot take your life. You do not need to worry about such things.]
The System seemingly did not even know the reference. Su Feng found the literal comfort a bit funny. “Then I thank you for your kind words. Also, what does deduction mean? Does it mean you tell me the future based on my choices?”
“This is the guidance of fate,” the System said. “Every decision you make affects your future. I am merely informing you of the situations you will encounter.”
“Can I know what would have happened on the paths I did not choose?” Su Feng asked curiously.
Unfortunately, this was not a game; there was no save button. Every decision was final. Naturally, he could not know what happened in the alternate timelines.
Now, Morpheus and Su Feng were in the same boat. Su Feng’s cloak billowed behind him as he rushed back to camp. Vina was waiting for him and was shocked by his appearance. She stared at the wound on his neck.
“Brother, what happened to you?” Vina asked worriedly. She realized her earlier actions had been impulsive and felt a surge of guilt. But as she approached, a moth’s head slowly peeked out from Su Feng’s cloak.
Vina’s gaze was drawn to it, but Su Feng quickly slapped the moth’s head back inside.
A very loud, aggrieved buzz came from his chest.
Vina was stunned. Had her brother brought back a magical pet from the Dawn Forest? Su Feng had always been serious and never kept pets. Vina thought he would spend his whole life with books, but here he was with a little creature tucked into his shirt.
“Tell Gao Yang to bring the mana aptitude testing equipment to my room,” Su Feng told her. Every citizen of the Aurora Continent had to undergo testing. Su Feng’s Anti-Magic Physique was known to everyone in Blackthorn City. Some even believed he should not be the City Lord because a leader without magic was considered useless.
Now that he mentioned the test, Vina looked at him and saw his blue eyes shining with unprecedented light.
“Yes, brother,” Vina said. Whatever had happened, she was happy for him.
Inside his room, Su Feng opened the System panel and converted all Intimacy Points into Luck Points. He used them all on the Lift Restriction option. He held his breath as if guarding a fleeting dream.
The moment the Luck Points entered his body, an invisible wave of air spread out from within him. He closed his eyes and saw his own soul. He saw layer upon layer of restrictions wrapped around him like cast cement and wax, sealing his internal mana and blocking any resonance with the outside world.
Only cursed or exiled sinners were punished with the severance of magic, yet Su Feng had done nothing.
Suddenly, a faint blackish-purple glow spread through the air and wrapped around the stone-like shell. Under Su Feng’s gaze, the restriction that he could never have removed on his own began to dissolve.
His breath hitched. A crack opened in the restriction. For a moment, Su Feng felt a sense of relief, like a drowning man finally getting oxygen. Then came an unprecedented comfort. The mana of the entire world began to drift toward him. He saw various elemental particles, the building blocks of the world. He reached out and grasped that power.
“Did our noble Master Su Feng ask you to bring these instruments because of some new mess?” Two knights carrying heavy equipment chatted on the way, laughing mockingly. “Does he actually think he found a way to fix his constitution?”
“Anti-Magic Physique, simply put, he is a cripple for life.” The two knights were from other families and resented Su Feng. They wondered why someone who could not use magic was their superior. “A person not blessed by mana cannot receive the Temple’s blessing. This calamity in Blackthorn City was likely brought upon by him. Just wait until the Temple priests arrive; we will see how long he lasts!”
They reached the study and stopped talking. To their disbelief, Su Feng was standing in the center of a massive mana whirlpool. The elements surrounded him, hovering in the air. This was the scene everyone experienced when their mana aptitude awakened for the first time. The larger the whirlpool, the more terrifying the talent.
Su Feng was not just surrounded; he was at the very center, almost floating!
The knights’ faces twitched. This was a literal slap in the face. Su Feng opened his eyes. The influx of mana turned his black hair silvery and radiant. He landed on the ground and said, “Give me the equipment.”
They moved the instruments, still in shock. It felt as if a paralyzed person had suddenly got up to run a marathon. Su Feng placed his hand on the device.
Ding! Ding! Ding!
The machine buzzed. The knights held their breath, fearing a genius had been born. When the machine lit up with only three stars, they finally exhaled in relief. On the Aurora Continent, one star was the bottom, three was average, five was a genius, seven was a prodigy, and nine was a genius among geniuses. Ten stars were unheard of.
Su Feng’s smile faded slightly, but he did not look sad. One knight thought he was just posturing. Even if he awakened, three stars was just average.
“You may leave,” Su Feng said. “Leave the equipment.”
“By the way, I am in a good mood today, so I am treating the whole camp to a feast. You have worked hard; rest well tonight.”
“Of course, Boss. This is a great event for Blackthorn City,” they replied with smiles before leaving.
Su Feng looked at the machine with a complex expression. In his mind, only one inch of the shackles had dissolved. His Intimacy Points were gone, and the remaining stone layers still restricted him. But his gaze was now full of hope.
Three stars? He smiled. It was more than that. He was going to be a genius.
Inside the study, the giant moth crawled on the table. Seeing its master immersed in joy and ignoring it, the moth fluttered its wings aggrievedly. It targeted Su Feng’s shoulder and flew over, landing with a soft thump.
“Who is the hero of the day? Who is the cutest moth?” Su Feng picked up the creature and rubbed its soft fur affectionately.
“It is you!” Su Feng said, and the moth buzzed in surprise. Overcome with emotion, Su Feng hugged the marshmallow and said, “I love you to death!”
The moth was completely shocked. Its wings stood upright, and it froze like a stuffed toy. A moment later, it fled in a panic, flying around the room and waving its claws while staring at him.
“Brother, Vina told me the news!” Vina burst into the room, but instead of a tall, perfect hero, she saw a fat, fluffy, giant moth flying in the air.
“Why is it so fat?” Vina muttered. She walked out and opened the door again. Had she seen correctly? Why was there a flying furry pig in her brother’s room?
The System watched Su Feng’s joy silently. Unbeknownst to him, the other deductions he did not choose began to take shape as unfinished novels in another world. An unsuspecting reader opened one of them:
Morpheus was gripped tightly by the neck. He opened his eyes to see a handsome man with deep blue eyes looking down at him with murderous intent. Su Feng looked like a provoked wolf. Morpheus felt suffocated and weak. Yet, Morpheus smiled gently.
“I will kill you!” Su Feng said. But before he could, a binding force within him made him release his grip. Su Feng trembled as if in pain.
“I am sorry,” Morpheus coughed, looking gentle. “It seems you have become my servant through a master-servant contract. If you kill me, you will die too.”
Su Feng stared at him with hatred. “The contract only keeps you alive,” Su Feng spat. “When I find a way to break it, I will skin you alive!”
Morpheus laughed softly. “I will be waiting.”
The System closed the deduction and looked at Su Feng again, who was currently spinning around the room, hugging the giant moth.
