Unconventional [Rebirth] - Chapter 13
The first exam started at eight in the morning on May 16th.
The first subject was history, and most of the questions were based on rote memorization, which was no challenge for Jiang Rui’s freakishly good memory. He finished the exam in less than half an hour.
After checking it once and confirming that there were no problems, Jiang Rui put down his pen. Since he was sitting by the window, he could see what was happening below. Jiang Rui turned his head and saw a silver-white Porsche parked downstairs. Because the car was behind the building, and most of the parents were waiting in the front for their children to come out, there was hardly anyone there.
Jiang Rui’s jaw almost dropped. A Porsche was a luxury car even in the future, let alone now. You couldn’t even buy one with money.
Without a doubt, the person in the car was him.
As expected, Rong Jingting, still dressed in all white from head to toe, got out of the car. He seemed to know Jiang Rui’s location and looked up in his direction.
Jiang Rui’s heart skipped a beat as his eyes met his.
Rong Jingting pulled his scarf down, revealing his exquisite and cold face, and nodded slightly in Jiang Rui’s direction.
Jiang Rui’s exam room was on the second floor, and the distance between them was enough for them to clearly see each other’s expressions. Jiang Rui looked at Rong Jingting’s stunning face and felt a little overwhelmed, so he quickly looked away.
For the next few subjects, geography, and in the afternoon, Chinese and chemistry, Rong Jingting stayed and waited the entire time. Jiang Rui wrote with the help of a god. Besides Chinese, he finished all the other exams in less than half an hour. Everything went unexpectedly smoothly.
On the third day, the last exam in the morning was foreign languages. This was Jiang Rui’s strong suit. In his previous life, he often traveled abroad with Wang Chenghui and had been specially trained in this area. Both his foundational knowledge and his oral skills were excellent. Especially his oral skills, besides standard pronunciation, he had also learned the accents of several places, such as New York and London.
When most people were still struggling with the multiple-choice questions after the listening part, he had already put down his pen. After checking his paper twice, he got up and handed it in as soon as the early submission period began.
As Jiang Rui was handing in his paper, he felt several gazes on him. He could imagine the expressions and feelings of those people.
A smile appeared on Jiang Rui’s face.
As soon as he left the exam room, Jiang Rui first went to the bathroom and sent a text message to Rong Jingting, who was still waiting behind the building: [I’ve left the exam room.] He replied quickly, almost immediately: [When are you free? I’ll treat you to a celebratory meal.] Jiang Rui was stunned after reading it. That’s not right. How can a student who just finished the high school entrance exam be busy? The one who should be busy is Mr. Rong, right?
[I’m free whenever you are.]
Rong Jingting, who was about to get in his car, stopped when he saw the text message. He replied: [Tomorrow night at eight, at the Taibai Tower, in the same private room as last time. I’ll see you there.] [I’ll see you there.] Jiang Rui replied with a smile.
As soon as Jiang Rui came out of the stairwell, the sharp-eyed He Fulan spotted him and quickly ran toward him with her husband in tow.
The couple didn’t know who they heard it from, but they were told never to ask their child how they did on the exam after they came out, or it would put too much pressure on them. The two of them held back and didn’t dare to ask a single question about the exam.
“Rui Rui, you’ve been taking exams all morning. Are you hungry? How about we go home now, and I’ll cook you something good?” He Fulan handed her son a bag of milk to quench his thirst.
Jiang Rui secretly enjoyed his parents’ careful concern for a moment and then said with a smile, “Dad, why don’t you cook a few dishes today too? Make a fish, and stew a chicken. Oh, and my favorite, twice-cooked pork! I’ve been craving Mom’s braised pork for a long time! We have to have it this time! And pig stomach soup!”
He Fulan slapped her son on the arm and said, “You brat, you’re even ordering food at home. You’ve gotten so spoiled!”
Jiang Rui quickly hid behind his father. “It’s to celebrate in advance!”
Jiang Jianjun shielded his son from his wife’s “Iron Palm” and laughed heartily. “Rui Rui is right. We can afford it now. We’ll cook whatever our son wants!”
He Fulan looked at the close father and son and said sourly, “Now you two are on the same side. I’ve become the class enemy!”
The family of three walked and chatted. Not far away, a chubby woman quickly walked toward them and shouted, “Brother Jiang, Sister-in-law Jiang, wait! Have you seen my Chengcheng? Your Rui Rui has been out of the exam room for a long time, so why isn’t my Chengcheng here yet?”
When He Fulan saw the woman, her face immediately fell. She said half-heartedly, “Oh, it’s Guifen. We haven’t seen Chengcheng. Just wait a little longer. Maybe Chengcheng is about to come out.”
Sun Guifen walked up to them, glanced at Jiang Rui, and said with a smile, “My Chengcheng just takes his exams very seriously. He can’t take his eyes off the paper until the last second. Oh, by the way, Rui Rui, how do you think you did this time? Do you think you can get into Fourth High School? I know someone at Fourth High School. If you don’t do well enough, I can put in a good word for you.”
Jiang Rui said humbly, “Thank you, Auntie Sun. I think I did okay this time. Brother Chengcheng is more reliable and diligent than me. I heard he was studying until twelve last night, so he must have done very well this time.”
Sun Guifen’s eyes narrowed with a smile upon hearing this. “How could that be? You’re much smarter than my Chengcheng.” Although she said that, no one knew what she was thinking.
He Fulan used to run a tailor shop, and Sun Guifen was her competitor. There were bound to be some conflicts between them. But Sun Guifen was not a forgiving person and loved to compare herself with others. She would compare everything with others, from income to skills, and from skills to family, husband, and children. She would pull He Fulan into a competition about anything and everything.
He Fulan was a kind person, but she really couldn’t stand this kind of competitive fanatic. She thought that now that her tailor shop was closed, Sun Guifen’s hostility toward her would lessen. But who knew, Sun Guifen seemed to be even more energized.
Sun Guifen’s eldest son, Li Cheng, didn’t get into Ningping Town First Middle School and went to Third Middle School instead. She heard that he was always first in his grade at school. This made Sun Guifen so proud that she would show off to He Fulan every day in a roundabout way.
She didn’t even think about it. How could Third Middle School compare to First Middle School? The number one student at Third Middle School wouldn’t even be able to get into an honors class at First Middle School!
The exam results hadn’t been released yet, but Sun Guifen already felt that her son had done better than Jiang Rui and even chased after them to show off. He Fulan was so angry she wanted to just sneer.
Sun Guifen looked at the backs of the Jiang family and pouted. She then turned to another person she loved to compare with and even brought Jiang Rui into it this time. “Hey, sister, do you think Old Jiang’s Rui Rui left the exam room half an hour early because the questions were too difficult and he didn’t know how to do them?”
“Yeah, the high
