Chapter 9: Your Friend is Very Beautiful
The smile on Su Su’s face slowly solidified.
“What kind of nonsense is this?”
Li Miao and Sun Yimiao looked up at her. “Why are you so angry? Did you hear it too?”
“I… I didn’t see—I mean, I didn’t hear anything! Isn’t the Confessions Wall for confessions? Why is there all this messy junk on it?”
Halfway through her skincare routine, the more she thought about it, the more curious she became about what she and Chen Jia had actually done to make someone think they were doing something “indescribable.”
She hastily smeared her face cream, hopped down from her bed, and demanded, “Let me see.”
Seeing the look in her eyes—as if she was ready to bite someone—Sun Yimiao blankly handed over her phone.
[Post on Confessions Wall] Please keep this anonymous, hide my identity completely. Today I’m exposing something mind-blowing and utterly ridiculous. I’m female. While showering today, I heard two women in the double stall next to me doing ‘that kind of thing.’ Since when did the LGBTQ+ community get so bold? If I hadn’t heard those disgusting sounds with my own ears, I wouldn’t believe this actually happens at school. I hope some people have some self-respect. Also, I’m calling for the school to scrap this insane double-stall design. What ‘genius’ came up with this? I hope other girls protect themselves and don’t get targeted by perverts.
By the time Su Su finished reading, her face was contorted with rage.
“What did gay people ever do to her? How can she speak so nastily? ‘Hope other girls protect themselves’—she talks like she’s some celestial beauty. Even if someone likes girls, it’s not like they like every girl they see. The nerve! She better hope I don’t find out who she is, or I’ll smack that mouth of hers.”
The entire dorm was stunned.
Li Sisi slurped her last noodle into her mouth. “Why such a huge reaction?”
“My aunt likes women! She’s a wonderful person, better than most. What century is this? Still with this discrimination?” Su Su glared. “Do you guys agree with that person?”
She wasn’t asking to threaten anyone; she just felt that if their values didn’t align, there was no point in being friends—it would just lead to fights later.
Li Sisi shook her head quickly, and Sun Yimiao followed suit after a brief hesitation.
As for Chen Jia, Su Su simply ignored her. If Chen Jia were like those people, she wouldn’t have agreed to shower with her in the first place.
She even felt a bit guilty. If it weren’t for her, Chen Jia wouldn’t have been the subject of a hateful post on the Confessions Wall.
Chen Jia, however, didn’t care. The door had been closed; no one knew what they looked like. People could say whatever they wanted.
…
After dinner, there were about twenty minutes left before Chen Jia had to leave. She packed her things to head out.
Su Su was hungry but couldn’t eat much. However, no one in the dorm seemed to have the habit of wasting food, especially Chen Jia. Every time Su Su left leftovers, Chen Jia would give her a look of disapproval, so she forced herself to keep swallowing slowly.
Seeing Chen Jia sling her small handmade cloth bag over her shoulder, Su Su put down her chopsticks and looked at her expectantly. “You’re leaving already?”
Classes hadn’t officially started yet, so there was nothing to do tonight. Chen Jia wanted to go out, but she had work; she didn’t have time to play.
Li Sisi was going home, and Sun Yimiao had other friends at school. Su Su didn’t feel right following them. Once Chen Jia left, she’d be all alone in the dorm.
She wanted to go along. Even though she didn’t say it directly, Chen Jia was all too familiar with that look.
“I’m going to work.”
Thinking it might be boring, Chen Jia tried to nudge her to stay. But if she didn’t say it explicitly, Su Su completely missed the subtext.
“I know! I won’t bother you. I’ll just sit nearby.” Seeing Chen Jia remain silent, she turned on the thick-skinned charm. “Let’s go, let’s go! I’m coming with you.”
“Fine, let’s go.”
Relenting to the pestering, Chen Jia brought her along to the fruit shop.
The shop was located at the far end of the “Gourmet Street” behind the school. Because of its wide variety and cheap prices, it had a high volume of customers every day. Her job mostly involved cutting fruit, answering price inquiries, and weighing items—general odd jobs.
The owner was a woman in her fifties who greeted her with a smile. “Finished military training?”
Chen Jia put on the apron the owner handed her and nodded. “Yes.”
She was a girl of few words, and the owner soon lost interest in small talk. She simply explained that a girl used to have this job, but since that girl was starting her senior year and needed to focus on her thesis and job hunting, the owner needed a replacement.
Since Chen Jia was new, the owner had arranged for the previous girl to train her for a few days. Once she got the hang of it, she’d handle everything alone. During the training period, the pay would be slightly lower.
Chen Jia knew that part-time jobs around campus were highly sought after. The owner was clearly lowballing the price, and Chen Jia was likely the only one who wouldn’t complain, which was probably why she had secured the job before training even started. She really needed the money, so she had no grievances.
Su Su had never seen someone being taken advantage of like this. She was about to speak up when she saw Chen Jia shake her head at her. She realized that if she tried to demand “justice” now, Chen Jia might lose the job entirely. She suppressed her temper and found a place to sit, promising not to interfere.
As the owner explained the duties, a few customers trickled in. The owner demonstrated as she talked.
“Xiao Qin will be here soon. She’s worked for me for three years and is very efficient. The work isn’t hard; you’ll get the hang of it after three or four days with her.”
Just as she finished, a girl in a tracksuit walked in.
“Auntie Cai.”
“Ah, Xiao Qin is here! This is Qin Mingxing. You’ll be following her for the next two days.”
Qin Mingxing was tall—at least 1.7 meters. She looked very capable and gave off a sharp, efficient vibe.
Before she could ask, Chen Jia introduced herself: “Chen Jia.”
“Hello.”
Qin Mingxing wasn’t much for small talk either. Their Q&A style of communication was highly efficient.
Su Su had thought coming with Chen Jia would be less boring, but sitting on a stool by the entrance watching people pass by, she even lost interest in her phone.
“Chen Jia, when are we going back?”
Qin Mingxing finally seemed to notice the person sitting at the door. She looked at Su Su, a brief flash of surprise on her face, and asked Chen Jia, “Your friend?”
Chen Jia answered Su Su first: “It’s still early. If you’re tired, go back first.” Then she nodded to Qin Mingxing: “Yes.”
Qin Mingxing’s lips curled into a slight smile, appearing quite interested in Su Su. “She’s very beautiful.”
