Chapter 3: The Only Friend
Su Su’s personality was far too arrogant; she hadn’t had many friends growing up. Consequently, she considered anyone who was kind to her a friend. She hadn’t even looked down on the “country bumpkin” for being tacky, yet the country bumpkin had helped an outsider bully her.
Su Su was so aggrieved that tears teetered on the edge of her eyelids, threatening to fall.
Ever since she was a child, Chen Jia had been terrified of people crying in front of her because she had absolutely no idea how to comfort them.
“Hey, don’t cry.” The panic on Chen Jia’s normally cold face was visible to the naked eye.
It would have been fine if she hadn’t expressed concern, but the moment she did, Su Su felt even more wronged. “You just think that pretty boy looks good, so you’re taking his side!” As she spoke, she opened her tear-filled eyes to look at Jiang Hanting’s frost-covered face.
So scary! Who could possibly like a person like that?
Chen Jia was truly being framed. Having lived for over twenty years in her past life, her mind had been entirely focused on making money; the thought of dating had never even crossed her mind. In fact, due to some unpleasant experiences in her childhood, she had a subconscious resistance toward men.
Hearing this, Jiang Hanting’s gaze swept over Chen Jia. Seemingly feeling insulted, his expression darkened further.
“Today, you will either apologize to me, or I will treat you with your own medicine.” He gave a look to the person beside him, who obediently headed toward the fried rice window.
Su Su loved beauty more than anything; how did this guy dare say he’d pour fried rice on her?
“Don’t even think about it!” She glared at him, appearing bold, but her eyes were filled with panic and worry.
She had been protected far too well. Her previous schools weren’t large, and because her family was wealthy, everyone knew her and no one dared provoke her. Any other uncertain factors were kept at bay by bodyguards during her commute. Her life had never known a ripple of conflict.
The reason her family had insisted she live on campus this time was that they finally realized their protection had been excessive and hoped she would integrate into real life. Who would have thought she’d provoke a major problem the moment she arrived?
Her fingers pinched the hem of Chen Jia’s T-shirt.
Chen Jia thought: I truly hate this warm heart of mine that keeps jumping in to help others.
She pulled Su Su behind her. “Even if my friend was reckless, she wouldn’t just run into someone in a space this wide. If I’m not mistaken, you were spacing out just now, weren’t you?”
Her finger pointed to the surveillance camera above Jiang Hanting’s head. “There happens to be a monitor right there. Want to check it before you keep talking?”
At that moment, a mild-mannered young man timidly raised a hand. “Actually, I saw it too. This girl tried to dodge, but she couldn’t make it in time.”
He had two friends who also spoke up for Su Su. “We all saw it.”
Jiang Hanting’s lips thinned, his expression irritable. His hand moved inside his trouser pocket. Chen Jia thought he was about to strike, and her heart jumped into her throat, but he was simply shifting his stance.
Just then, Jiang Hanting’s friend returned, holding two plates of fried rice with a confused expression. “Hanting?”
“It’s nothing.” Jiang Hanting’s brows knitted together as he spoke flatly. “I was thinking about something and wasn’t paying attention. Sorry.”
“A simple ‘sorry’ is enough? You framed me! Do you have any idea how much of our time you’ve wasted?” Su Su’s style was to be weak when the enemy was strong and strong when the enemy was weak.
Jiang Hanting gave her a cold sweep of his eyes, and her arrogance instantly halved. Yet, because she felt protected, she couldn’t stop her mouth from being stubborn even though she was scared.
“Walking while spacing out… were you dumped by your girlfriend or something?”
These words struck Jiang Hanting’s fragile heart directly. Chen Jia remembered this plot point: his girlfriend, Lin Yue’er, really had broken up with him at this time.
She saw his fist clench at his side, the veins on his muscular arm bulging with power. Chen Jia acted quickly, covering Su Su’s non-stop mouth.
I really can’t believe your luck!
“We have things to do, we’re leaving!” Chen Jia dragged Su Su out of the canteen.
Once outside, Su Su struggled free, her face full of indignation. “What did you pull me away for? I wasn’t finished!”
“If he actually started punching you, could you win?”
The strength gap between men and women was naturally huge, and Jiang Hanting was the “Child of Destiny” in this world, while Su Su was a “Destiny Glitch.” If the two collided, it would be like a comet hitting Earth; the final result would be unimaginable. At that point, the two of them—the “unlucky duo”—would be in the wrong even if they held the moral high ground.
Su Su thought of Jiang Hanting’s stance, swallowed hard, and went quiet.
The boy who had spoken up for Su Su in the canteen chased after them, his face flushing red as he stared at Su Su. He stuttered for a long time without being able to form a complete sentence.
Su Su finally realized she had left in such a hurry that she hadn’t thanked him. “Thanks for helping me back there. Let me treat you to something to eat!” She didn’t like being in debt; she believed in repaying kindness immediately.
“No need, I’m not here for that. I… I…” He scratched his head, caught sight of the watch on Su Su’s wrist, and had a sudden idea. “My sister just said she wanted to buy a watch. How about we exchange contact info, and you can send me the link?”
Seeing someone appreciate her things, a smile finally appeared on Su Su’s face, and she suddenly forgot about the heat. “Oh, you mean this? There is no link. This was a custom 18th birthday gift my dad commissioned for me. I don’t really know the brand, but I heard it was quite expensive.”
Getting excited, she didn’t even notice the boy’s expression becoming increasingly embarrassed. She pointed at a pink gemstone on the watch. “I heard this one little piece of ‘broken stone’ cost two million. Honestly, I don’t even think it looks that good…”
Chen Jia watched as the look in the boy’s eyes shifted from shy joy to resentment and disgust.
His eyes looked wounded. “If you don’t want to give me your contact info, fine, but there’s no need to humiliate me like this.” With that, he turned and ran away.
Su Su was baffled. “Wasn’t he the one who asked? I told him the truth; how is that humiliating him?”
Chen Jia pursed her lips. Rich people are terrifying. The truth sounds like an insult to everyone else.
Chen Jia was truly afraid that Su Su’s mindless honesty would bring her disaster. “I know you’re very rich, but try to keep a low profile when you’re out.”
She said it subtly, but the meaning was clear. However, Su Su still misunderstood.
“I know. My aunt said that if I’m not low-profile, it creates a sense of disparity in others, and I won’t be able to make sincere friends.”
“…”
Damn it, I’m starting to feel a bit of ‘eat the rich’ resentment myself.
Su Su had already moved on from the incident. “The way you stood in front of me just now was so cool! I declare that from today on, you are my only friend.”
She hugged Chen Jia’s arm, leaning against her with a face full of joy.
“Aren’t you afraid I’ll feel that ‘sense of disparity’?”
