Chapter 2: My Payment Password Is…
Su Su vaguely heard her talking about money.
Wasn’t it just money? Money was the one thing Su Su had in abundance.
Though she grumbled internally, her grip around Chen Jia’s neck tightened, and she continued to whimper in pain. “I’m dying here, hurry up!”
It was hard to believe that Su Su, who stood nearly 170cm tall with the cool, sophisticated look of a “mature older sister,” could make such a sound. Chen Jia felt a bit speechless, but she nonetheless dutifully carried her to the night emergency room.
The doctor pressed a hand against Su Su’s abdomen. “Does it hurt here?”
Su Su nodded, her bangs soaked with sweat.
The doctor glanced at her and said knowingly, “Haven’t been eating properly lately, have you?”
Guilty as charged, Su Su lowered her head. “I’m dieting.”
“You young girls nowadays… you don’t understand anything and diet blindly. If you ruin your stomach, you might end up struggling with your weight for the rest of your life.”
Su Su’s heart skipped a beat, her expression full of worry.
Having successfully teased her, the doctor couldn’t hold it back anymore. He smiled at Chen Jia, whose expression was equally weary, and handed her the slip. “Intestinal gas. It’s not too serious, though it hurts like hell. Go get the medicine.”
Just as Chen Jia turned to leave, her sleeve was tugged. She looked back to see Su Su shoving a phone into her hand. It was quite impressive that she had remembered to bring her phone while in such agony.
“I have money. The password is…” Halfway through, Su Su paused, her eyes filled with conflict.
Chen Jia truly had no designs on her money and felt quite exasperated. She didn’t want to argue; she just wanted to get this over with and go back to school. She tossed the phone back to Su Su.
“Forget it. I can afford this much.”
“No, the password is my birthday: 990730.”
“…”
Was that something you should just say out loud?
Su Su regretted it the moment the words left her mouth. She curled up, whimpering and praying that Chen Jia was a good person who wouldn’t steal her money. Even though she was rich, her money didn’t grow on trees, and she felt the sting of spending—especially on other people.
When Chen Jia returned with the medicine, Su Su took her phone back with feigned composure and, while Chen Jia wasn’t looking, secretly checked her balance.
Every single one of these little movements was caught by Chen Jia. She scoffed inwardly; with a brain like that, it was no wonder Su Su could only be the “Second Female Lead.”
After taking the medicine, Su Su regained some of her spirit. “What are you laughing at? We just met; is it wrong for me to be cautious?”
“Sure, why not? But since we just met and you still dared to let me take you to the hospital, weren’t you afraid I’d sell you off?”
Su Su pursed her lips, rendered speechless.
Chen Jia let out a yawn. “Are you rested enough? If so, let’s go back.”
“Do we have to go back?” Su Su’s legs felt like jelly.
“Do you want to sleep in the hospital?”
Su Su actually did have that thought, mostly because she couldn’t walk. She wasn’t thick-skinned enough to ask Chen Jia to carry her all the way back.
After resting for another half hour, the pain in Su Su’s stomach had completely vanished. After the night’s ordeal, she was physically and mentally exhausted. “Let’s go back.”
Though she wanted to stay, Chen Jia wouldn’t stay with her, and she was a bit scared to be alone. She stood up, only to realize that they had left in such a hurry that Chen Jia hadn’t put shoes on her.
The hospital air conditioning was quite strong. She rubbed her bare feet together. “Am I supposed to go back like this?”
Chen Jia fell silent for a moment, then crouched down in front of Su Su. “Hurry up. I’m tired.”
Chen Jia didn’t think much of it; she just wanted to get back quickly. Su Su stood still for a second. Thinking back on her attitude toward Chen Jia earlier, she felt a pang of guilt.
Chen Jia began to urge her impatiently. “Hurry!”
With no better option, Su Su leaned onto her back. Chen Jia carried her out of the hospital. Along the way, Su Su held onto Chen Jia’s neck, listening to her shallow breathing.
“I really have lost weight.”
“Mm.” Chen Jia gave her a slight hoist; she indeed wasn’t very heavy.
By the time they reached the dorm, dawn was breaking. After a night of tossing and turning, both were covered in sweat. Su Su couldn’t stand it and rushed into the bathroom to shower.
The “exquisite girl” took her sweet time. Chen Jia was almost asleep by the time the bathroom door finally opened. A wave of steam, carrying the scent of roses, filled the room. Feeling better physically, Su Su was in high spirits.
“Ah, that felt so good.” Her new body wash smelled wonderful. Driven by a desire to share, she pressed her fair, clean wrist toward Chen Jia’s nose. “Does it smell good?”
Chen Jia was so tired her eyelids were fighting each other. She gave a perfunctory nod, grabbed her things, and headed into the bathroom.
Watching her cold silhouette, Su Su pouted. Total country bumpkin. No appreciation for the finer things.
Chen Jia made it quick, finishing in ten minutes. When she came out, she found Su Su still awake, happily applying body lotion.
“Want some?” Since Chen Jia had taken her to the hospital, Su Su felt much closer to her.
“No thanks. I’m tired.”
Chen Jia held her wet hair in her hand and stepped out onto the balcony. She swung her head in circles like a washing machine’s spin cycle until most of the water was gone. When she turned back, Su Su was looking at her with a face full of wonder.
“Is that how you usually dry your hair?”
“Mm.”
“Why don’t you like to talk?”
“Don’t want to.”
Mainly, Chen Jia felt they had nothing in common, and she was even more afraid that Su Su’s bad luck would rub off on her. But Su Su seemed oblivious to her resistance and kept trying to stick to her.
“I’ve decided not to do that starvation diet anymore.” Afraid that she would actually ruin her stomach and stay “big” forever, Su Su seemed to have made a monumental decision.
Chen Jia frowned, wondering why she was being told this. Su Su provided the explanation quickly enough.
“Let’s go eat together from now on. You’re poor and I’m rich, so I’ll treat you.”
Chen Jia raised an eyebrow. Did all that work tonight result in a ‘meal ticket’? Although she was poor and lacked ambition, she valued her life. “No thanks. I can afford to eat.”
In Su Su’s eyes, this refusal was just being polite. She threw an arm around Chen Jia’s neck like they were best friends and waved her hand grandly. “We’re friends now, don’t be polite with me. My monthly allowance is 100,000 yuan. I could raise two of you without a problem.”
“Really, it’s fine.” Chen Jia was firm.
Su Su stopped talking. She stood by the balcony door, leaning against the frame with her head lowered, looking quite disappointed. “Do you find me really annoying?”
Annoying wasn’t quite it; it was more like scary. Chen Jia shook her head. “I usually have to go out for part-time work, so I don’t have time to eat with you. Go by yourself.”
“Oh.” Since a reason was given, Su Su’s sadness dissipated slightly. Despite her disappointment, she couldn’t bring herself to tell Chen Jia not to work.
It was 6:00 AM by the time they both lay down; the world outside was already bright. Having stayed up all night, Chen Jia fell asleep the moment her head hit the pillow.
She woke up again to the sound of people arriving in the dorm. The clattering and banging were irritating. Su Su’s “morning grumpiness” kicked in. She pulled back her curtain, sporting two dark circles under her eyes, and said crossly, “Can’t you see there are people still sleeping here?”
The newcomer was no pushover. “It’s not sleeping time anyway. Why should I accommodate you?”
The logic was sound. Su Su had nothing to say. Unable to sleep and feeling hungry, she had to get up. She pulled back Chen Jia’s plain cloth curtain and gave her a nudge. “I’m hungry.”
Chen Jia had been awake for a while, but she was so tired she didn’t want to move. Hearing Su Su, she squinted through a sliver of an eye. “If you’re hungry, go eat.”
“I don’t want to go alone. And I haven’t paid you back yet. Let’s go together.” She clung to the edge of the bed as if she wouldn’t leave until Chen Jia got up.
Resigned, Chen Jia was forced to get out of bed.
It was registration period at Q University, so the campus was crowded, yet the canteen was strangely quiet. Su Su was a picky eater; she scoured both floors of the East Canteen but couldn’t find anything she liked. “What is all this stuff?”
After finishing with the East Canteen, she planned to check the West Canteen. If she kept browsing like this, they would never eat.
“Stop picking. Let’s just eat here.”
Su Su wanted to argue, but seeing the impatient look on Chen Jia’s face, she immediately lost her nerve. “Okay.”
They ordered two plates of fried rice. Su Su had a small appetite. Back at the dorm, she sounded like she could eat a cow, but after two bites of rice, she was full.
Chen Jia frowned. Her family back home had been okay financially, but they had always followed the “Clean Plate Club” rule. Seeing such wastefulness repulsed her, and her tone turned sharp. “You’re done?”
Su Su was completely oblivious, scrolling through her phone and smiling widely at whatever she saw. “What? Oh, I’m done. Can’t eat anymore.”
Chen Jia’s frown deepened. Even Su Su, as dense as she was, finally noticed something was wrong. “It’s just a bowl of rice. Is it that big a deal?”
Chen Jia didn’t respond. They really were from two different worlds; it was better not to spend too much time together. Staying with Su Su meant not only worrying about bad luck but also dealing with her irritating personality.
Chen Jia finished her food in two bites, picked up her tray, and left without a word to Su Su.
Su Su realized what happened and hurried to catch up. Running too fast, she slammed into someone, spilling half a bowl of rice all over their clothes. Egg fried rice stuck to a white T-shirt—the scene was as awkward as it was ridiculous.
“Are you blind?”
The person she hit was an exquisitely handsome guy, the legendary “iceberg” type. His eyes were like searchlights, making one’s skin crawl.
“Hanting, are you okay?”
Chen Jia froze. That name was all too familiar.
Hanting? Jiang Hanting? The male lead of this cringy novel?
How did the book describe Su Su’s first meeting with Jiang Hanting? Love at first sight. Sparks flying everywhere.
Well, sparks were definitely flying now—just sparks of pure rage.
Su Su, who had been pampered since childhood, couldn’t stand being wronged. “Who are you calling blind? What’s the point of being so tall if you didn’t see me walking this way? I even tried to dodge, but you kept coming. Who else would I hit? And stop staring! So what if your eyes are big?”
With fried rice stuck to him, Jiang Hanting’s mood was already abysmal, and the culprit was being incredibly arrogant. His already dark expression turned even grimmer.
Su Su wanted to say more, but Chen Jia pulled her back.
Having read the book, Chen Jia knew that the author probably wanted to portray the male lead as “straightforward” and only devoted to the female lead, so he was given a very ungentlemanly trait: he would hit a woman.
If this tall guy landed a punch on Su Su’s tiny face, wouldn’t she be disfigured on the spot?
Chen Jia had seen it clearly; Su Su had seen Jiang Hanting coming and tried to avoid him, but Jiang Hanting—lost in thought—had walked straight into her. However, as a “cool and overbearing” male lead, he would never admit fault; he would only think Su Su was at fault.
Su Su felt she was in the right and was frustrated at being held back. The canteen wasn’t crowded, but most people were looking their way. Her eyes turned red with suppressed emotion.
“He’s the one who hit me, and you’re taking his side?”
