Chapter 19: “Sigh, You Wouldn’t Understand”
“Eh?”
Su Su’s hand landed randomly, and it landed somewhere it shouldn’t have.
The touch beneath her palm was incredibly soft. She instinctively moved her fingers, but the moment she realized what she was doing, she felt as if she had been scorched. She retracted her “claw” instantly.
The girl who had been the bold flirt just moments ago was now huddled in the corner like a frightened quail, hands raised in surrender. “My fault! I’m sorry! Let’s just wash up properly. No more playing.”
A faint lingering pressure remained on Chen Jia’s chest. If Su Su hadn’t acted so shy, it might have passed, but the more embarrassed Su Su became, the bolder Chen Jia felt. “Know how to be afraid now, do you?”
Su Su kept her back turned to Chen Jia. “Chen Jia, I’m serious, no more playing. I’m done!”
Her heartbeat had quickened for some inexplicable reason—a first in her eighteen years of life. She instinctively reached up to press a hand over her heart.
It’s just a bath with a best friend, right? Is it really supposed to make me this… happy?
Seeing that Su Su had truly surrendered, Chen Jia stopped teasing and focused on washing herself. She knew some people were ticklish all over, and being touched was genuinely uncomfortable for them.
“Alright, I’ll stop messing with you.”
Su Su remained unusually quiet for the rest of the bath. She didn’t even share the plethora of bottles and jars on her shelf, let alone bring up the back-scrubbing session they had planned.
However, the moment they stepped out of the cramped, humid bathroom, Su Su’s energy returned. She told herself that these strange feelings were simply because she had never had a real friend before. Once she got used to Chen Jia’s presence, everything would go back to normal.
…
The wardrobe was thrown open, and a colorful array of clothes was strewn across the bed.
Knock, knock…
Pan Yuanyuan tapped on the door. “Little Baozi, are you asleep? I knew you were coming back, so I bought a gift for you. I forgot to give it to you earlier.”
“Ah? The door’s unlocked!”
Pan Yuanyuan pushed the door open, but the scene before her made her pause mid-step.
Chen Jia was sitting on the bed with her back to the door, while Su Su was perched on her lap, one hand cupping Chen Jia’s chin as she applied makeup to her face.
To most best friends, this wouldn’t be too strange, but the atmosphere between them… was a bit too unique. It was hard to describe—a kind of intimacy that seemed to shut out the rest of the world.
Seeing Pan Yuanyuan, Su Su waved excitedly. “I knew Auntie Pan loved me best! What did you get me?”
It took Pan Yuanyuan a moment to snap out of it. “Oh? Nothing much… I just saw you liked this brand of perfume, and they released a new one recently. I figured you’d want it, so I picked up a bottle.”
Despite receiving gifts often, the feeling of being thought of still made Su Su very happy. She pushed off Chen Jia’s shoulders to stand up, but Pan Yuanyuan instinctively waved her off. “Don’t get up! I’ll just leave it here and head out.”
Before Su Su could even react, Pan Yuanyuan set the gift box on the bed, closed the door, and vanished.
Su Su was left blinking in confusion at the odd behavior. “Did Auntie Pan have a fight with my Aunt? Why is she acting so weird?”
Chen Jia was curious. “Have they always been close?”
Bai Li appeared very sharp and capable, while Pan Yuanyuan was soft and gentle, like water—the type of person who seemed to embrace everything with patience.
“Yeah! Since as far back as I can remember, they’ve always been together. Even if they fight occasionally, my Aunt is always the one who shamelessly chases her back. To be honest, everyone knows that even if she didn’t beg, Auntie Pan wouldn’t stay mad for long.”
The two seemed perfectly matched—one willing to “hit” and the other willing to “suffer.”
…
Pan Yuanyuan hadn’t fought with Bai Li, but she returned to their room looking preoccupied. Bai Li had just finished her shower and was drying her hair.
“What’s the matter? Surely Bao Bao wasn’t being disobedient?”
“No… didn’t you feel it? It was a little… strange.” Pan Yuanyuan tried to choose her words delicately. If she could sense it, she didn’t believe Bai Li had noticed nothing.
“What’s strange? You mean her and that little friend?” Bai Li smiled. “Things like that… just let nature take its course.”
Bai Li knew exactly what her partner was worried about. The two of them had walked a long, difficult road together and faced many storms. Bao Bao had a simple, innocent personality; Pan Yuanyuan feared she wouldn’t be able to withstand the same pressures they had.
Bai Li pulled her into an embrace. “Alright, don’t worry. Bao Bao is actually much stronger than you think. If she truly ends up liking girls, she isn’t the type to back down because of some groundless fears. We raised this child ourselves; we should at least trust her that much.”
…
Chen Jia held a green floral dress in her hands, looking at Su Su with utter skepticism.
Su Su seemed oblivious to Chen Jia’s full-body resistance. “Hurry up and change! I’ve never seen you wear a soft, girly dress like this.”
She had read somewhere that every little girl has a dream of wearing a princess dress. Since she had grown up with countless dresses, she felt it was her duty to help Chen Jia fulfill this “childhood dream.”
As the person involved, Chen Jia wanted to clarify that this kind of dress was never something she would choose—not in her past life, and certainly not in this one.
“I really don’t think I need to wear this.”
Su Su was too excited to let it go. “You can do it! I’m so curious. If you don’t show me, I won’t be able to sleep tonight!”
Chen Jia pursed her lips, her eyes betraying her internal struggle. Finally, to end the nagging once and for all, she gritted her teeth and put on the green floral princess dress.
The moment she stepped out of the bathroom, the room erupted in fits of laughter.
“Hahahaha! This is too funny!”
Green was already a color that made tan skin look darker. On Chen Jia, it made her normally sharp and refined features look completely plain. Combined with her expressionless face reflecting a slight green tint under the lights, the effect was hilarious—it looked like a “Village Stage” performance gone wrong.
Su Su collapsed onto the bed, laughing until tears came to her eyes.
Chen Jia was helpless. “Satisfied now?”
Su Su wiped her tears and nodded vigorously. “Satisfied! Extremely satisfied!”
Chen Jia promptly stripped off the dress, revealing her short-sleeved pajamas underneath. “I assume I don’t have to try the rest?”
Su Su shook her head. “No more.” It wasn’t that she didn’t want to see more; she just felt that one-sided mockery was a bit too much and unfair to Chen Jia.
But Chen Jia, whose mental age was much older, didn’t take it to heart. At most, she was just slightly exasperated.
By the time the two finished tidying the pile of clothes, it was nearly midnight. It wasn’t that there were too many clothes; it was because Su Su couldn’t sit still—she’d fold two pieces and then start teasing Chen Jia again. The sound of giggling from the room never seemed to stop.
In the master bedroom, Bai Xue listened to the noise coming from next door and let out a long sigh.
Su Min looked up. “It’s a good thing the child is making friends. Why are you sighing?”
Bai Xue shot him a glare. “Sigh! Even if I told you, you wouldn’t understand.”
