Chapter 16: Going Home Together
Q University is located in the suburbs of Jiancheng. Although the location isn’t exactly prime, it sits adjacent to the Yellow River and is surrounded by three-story modern villas. Su Su led Chen Jia into the neighborhood, swiping her access card at the gate.
Su Su was usually so down-to-earth that Chen Jia often forgot she was actually a wealthy heiress.
Before Chen Jia could even ask, Su Su sheepishly explained, “My mom gave me this house recently. They originally thought I wouldn’t last two days in the school dorms, but to their surprise, I’ve stayed there for over a month without a single complaint.”
This villa was essentially a reward for her “good behavior” at school.
As the villa doors swung open, the first thing that caught the eye was a massive white grand piano.
“Ta-da! This is the surprise I told you about.”
Su Su had thought about it; the idea of Chen Jia dancing was a bit… odd. But what if she danced while Chen Jia played the piano? Just imagining it created a beautiful image in her mind.
However, she wasn’t entirely sure if Chen Jia could learn in such a short amount of time. Then again, she thought, Chen Jia is so quick with her hands when she’s typing on a keyboard—piano keys shouldn’t be much different, right?
In reality, Chen Jia did know how to play the piano, but she had rarely touched one since starting university. Her “character profile” in this life didn’t include being a pianist, so she remained silent.
Su Su waited for a reaction, but seeing Chen Jia look so unfazed made her feel a bit defeated. “Don’t you want to know what my plan is?”
“Oh? What’s your plan?”
Chen Jia curled the corners of her mouth, trying to look surprised. Unfortunately, her acting was poor, and Su Su saw right through it.
“Fine, don’t be surprised then. I just want you to play the piano during the arts performance; I’ll handle the dancing part.”
Even though Su Su wasn’t much of a dancer herself, she was willing to try.
She had intended to let Chen Jia practice today, but she realized it was getting late. The National Day holiday was the day after tomorrow, and she planned to head home tomorrow evening. Since she wanted to take Chen Jia out to have fun today, she said regretfully, “We’ll put this off until after the holiday. Let’s go out today. I heard a new barbecue place opened on Nanjing Road—it’s supposed to be delicious. We’ll eat first, then go for a walk by the Yellow River tonight…”
While she was chatteringly planning the evening, Chen Jia’s focus was entirely on the “going home for National Day” part.
“Can I go home with you for the holiday?”
“Huh?”
One second she was talking about the river breeze, and the next, they were going home together. Su Su’s train of thought stalled for a moment.
“You want to go home with me?”
“Is that not okay?”
Chen Jia simply wanted to know what exactly happened during this National Day break that turned the current “muggle” Su Su into a total “love-brain” (obsessive lover).
Taking a best friend home was something Su Su had wanted to do since she was a child, but for various reasons, it had never happened.
“Of course you can! Let’s eat first. We’ll skip the river walk—I need to go back and video call my mom so she can prepare extra good food.”
It was obvious Su Su was genuinely thrilled. All the way back, she kept telling Chen Jia about all the places they could visit once they got to her hometown.
Chen Jia smiled. Her originally heavy heart was lifted by Su Su’s joy, and her mood became lighthearted.
…
The next morning.
A Su family business van was parked early at the gates of Q University. The butler looked young and sharp.
“You must be Su Su’s classmate?”
“Yes.”
“I’ve been the butler for the Su family for five or six years, and this is the first time I’ve seen her bring a classmate home.”
Su Su gave him a sharp glare, and the butler immediately fell silent.
Su Su’s home was in Xicheng, a city in F Province second only to the provincial capital.
“My mom was so happy to hear you were coming; she made so much food.” Su Su was worried Chen Jia might be nervous.
“I know,” Chen Jia replied.
The original novel rarely described Su Su’s family life; Chen Jia only knew the Su family was fiercely protective. In the early stages of the story, Jiang Hanting and Lin Yue’er were tormented quite badly by them.
After a two-hour drive, they finally reached their destination. They stepped out in front of a courtyard composed of five or six interconnected villas.
“Let’s see who’s back. Oh, it’s our little princess.”
Grandma Su approached with a smile, warmly taking Su Su’s arm. Her gaze landed on Chen Jia. “This must be the friend you mentioned. What a pretty girl. I can tell just by looking that she’s different from those unreliable friends you used to hang out with.”
“Hello, Grandma.”
The old lady beamed. “Hello, hello. Thank you for looking after our Su Su at school.”
Being reminded of her past mistakes was a common occurrence for Su Su. She said helplessly, “Grandma, that was a long time ago. Chen Jia is different.”
Having finally made a “normal” friend, she was eager to introduce Chen Jia to everyone. “Is Auntie back?”
“She knew you were coming, so she specifically brought Auntie Pan over. They just went inside.”
As soon as the old lady finished speaking, a tall, fashionably dressed woman stood in the courtyard, asking with a smile, “Is my little shadow back?”
As soon as Su Su saw Bai Li, she lunged into the yard like a little cannonball. “Auntie!”
Because Su Su’s parents were busy with business when she was young, Bai Li had raised her. In this family, she was closest to Bai Li and Bai Li’s girlfriend, Pan Yuanyuan.
“Auntie Pan.”
Seeing Pan Yuanyuan, Su Su gave a sweet smile, not forgetting to pull Chen Jia forward to introduce her. “This is my friend, Chen Jia.”
Bai Li ushered Chen Jia inside while teasing Su Su, “I know, I know. Your loud voice reached me before you even entered the gate.”
Chen Jia thought she could remain calm and composed when meeting Su Su’s family, but she suddenly felt a bit nervous and awkward.
“Hello, Ma’am.”
Hearing the formal address, Bai Li’s lips curled into a smile. “You can just call me Auntie, like Su Su does.”
She then graciously introduced her partner to Chen Jia. “This is my girlfriend, Pan Yuanyuan. You can call her Auntie Pan.”
“Hello, Auntie Pan.”
Su Su had mentioned Bai Li’s situation before, so Chen Jia wasn’t surprised. Besides, she felt that how people lived their lives was their own business.
Pan Yuanyuan had been slightly anxious, but upon hearing Chen Jia call her “Auntie Pan,” her tension vanished. She smiled and suggested Su Su take Chen Jia upstairs to pick a room.
However, Su Su waved her hand dismissively. “No need to pick a room. She’ll sleep with me. It’s her first time here; she’ll definitely be uncomfortable if she’s alone.”
