Chapter 13: A New Person Within Three Days
Whether in her past life or this one, Chen Jia had zero talent for dancing. It wasn’t just because she disliked it; her “hardware” was simply too rigid for fluid movements.
But Su Su was dead-set on having them perform a program together on stage.
“It’s four years of university! Our relationship is so solid, we have to leave behind some beautiful memories, right? I heard they even record the gala onto an album. It’s a great keepsake!”
“…”
What do I do? I want to run away even more now.
“I don’t know how to dance.”
Chen Jia thought this would change Su Su’s mind, but as it turned out, Su Su had already planned for that.
“I know! I’m sure you never had the chance to learn these things before, but it doesn’t matter. I can teach you everything.”
“No thanks, I think—”
“I think you can definitely do it!”
From that day on, Chen Jia began dodging Su Su whenever possible. She looked for every excuse to head out; the library practically became her second home. If they weren’t in the same major and the same class, she really would have started to believe they actually had that much homework.
On Friday, Chen Jia returned from the library to find Su Su sitting alone in the dorm, head bowed, shrouded in a heavy layer of gloom. Seeing this, Chen Jia instinctively softened her movements.
“You’re back?” Su Su looked at her with such grievance that Chen Jia felt like a husband caught cheating.
Vaguely, Chen Jia felt a prickle of guilt. “Yeah… I’m back.”
“Is the library fun?”
“It’s alright.”
“Chen Jia~ It’s been three days. You’ve avoided me for three days. Am I really that scary?”
Aside from sleeping at night, they had barely interacted all day. Chen Jia was too guilty to meet her eyes. “I wasn’t avoiding you. I was studying.”
Su Su didn’t believe a word of it. Since the semester started, Chen Jia had never been this “in love” with studying until these past two days.
Pinned by that resentful gaze, Chen Jia finally surrendered. “I’m sorry. I really can’t dance. How about you change the program?”
Realizing there was room for negotiation, Su Su’s eyes lit up. “What do you want to change it to?”
“A solo performance for you.”
“…” Might as well have said nothing.
“Let me think about that part. But you remember what you promised me, right? Since you dodged me for so many days, you have to compensate me.”
Chen Jia understood now. This was the real goal of the whole performance. “What do you want to do?”
Su Su always had bizarre ideas; Chen Jia didn’t dare agree blindly.
“Why are you so guarded? Would I hurt you?”
You won’t hurt me, Chen Jia wanted to say, you’ll just find a way to make me die of social embarrassment.
Before she could speak, Su Su sealed the deal. “Thinking time is up! Since you didn’t speak, I’ll take that as a yes. You’re going shopping with me tomorrow. Don’t even think about running. I’ve set my alarm for 5:00 AM. Unless you don’t sleep in the dorm tonight, you’re not escaping.”
“…”
Unbelievable. As the saying goes, “behold the man after three days of absence”—Su Su was actually starting to use her brain.
Meeting Chen Jia’s surprised look, Su Su smirked. “Any objections?”
“None.”
“Good.”
Having rendered Chen Jia speechless, Su Su was delighted. She grabbed her toiletries and headed to the shower, humming a tune. In truth, she had been rehearsing those lines in her head for three days. She was doing all this just to get Chen Jia to accept some gifts.
She knew Chen Jia didn’t care about her money, but she did. It wasn’t that she looked down on how Chen Jia looked now; it was because she treated Chen Jia as one of her own that she wanted to share all the good things.
She wanted Chen Jia to be her personal “Love Nikki” dress-up doll.
…
The next day.
At the first ring of the 5:00 AM alarm, Su Su shut it off. She had been so excited the night before that she barely slept, checking her phone every few minutes. Now, she was groggy and half-asleep.
She peeled back her bed curtain only to find Chen Jia doing the same. Good, she’s being cooperative.
The other two roommates were either home for the weekend or out playing, leaving just the two of them. There was no need to be quiet.
Chen Jia had just woken up, her voice slightly raspy. “Why are you up so early? I promised you, so I won’t run.”
Su Su saw her yawning uncontrollably. Chen Jia emphasized, “I really won’t run. Go back to sleep for a bit. I’ll wake you at eight.”
Su Su was tempted. She was indeed exhausted. She stared intently at Chen Jia to confirm she was telling the truth before lying back down. “Fine then. Wake me at eight.”
By the time Chen Jia actually got her up, it was 8:30 AM, mostly because the first attempt failed and Su Su begged for another thirty minutes.
Chen Jia leaned by Su Su’s bed and gently pulled back the curtain. Su Su hadn’t used her blanket and was sleeping soundly, facing away with her chestnut curls spread across the pillow.
“It’s eight-thirty. Time to get up.”
Chen Jia’s voice was soft as she gave Su Su’s shoulder a gentle nudge. The soft hair slid between her fingertips. Su Su bleary-eyed, met Chen Jia’s clear gaze and checked the time.
“It’s 8:30 already?”
The person who had been so frantic at 5:00 AM was suddenly slow, taking her time to wash up, do her makeup, and get ready.
“When did you buy breakfast?”
“While waiting for you to get up.”
Chen Jia hadn’t planned it, but she woke up early and felt restless, so she took a walk and happened to pass the cafeteria.
By the time they finally left, it was 11:00 AM. Since they had a late breakfast, they could skip lunch for now. Although the semester was new, university students have an abundance of time and energy; everyone was already familiar with the local hotspots.
Su Su had already gathered Intel from her club members.
“This should be the biggest mall in Jian City,” Su Su said, leading the way. She added tentatively, “If you see anything you like later, don’t be polite. I’ll buy it for you.”
Chen Jia gave a dull nod but said nothing—a clear sign she was just humoring her. Su Su didn’t mind; the warning had been issued.
Su Su usually wore a few specific high-end brands, but Chen Jia’s style was clearly different. She needed to think carefully about what would suit her. They walked into a clothing store that caught their eye.
“Chen Jia, I think the clothes here are really pretty.”
Though Chen Jia didn’t have high requirements for her own wardrobe, she was still a girl and had a natural appreciation for nice things. She followed Su Su around. It wasn’t until they had circled the store once that a sales assistant finally approached.
The assistant’s eyes lit up when she saw Su Su. “Our store mainly focuses on the ‘Sweet-Cool’ aesthetic. You’re welcome to try anything on.”
Su Su waved her off and pointed at Chen Jia. “I’m not buying for myself; these don’t suit me. I’m buying for her.”
